Roy Wood has stated that Don Arden (birth name Harry Levy) ruined his career. Arden's meddling with early E.L.O. was the reason Roy quit the band, it was nothing to do with Roy and Jeff falling out, Arden drove a wedge between them. Arden was the overall winner because when Roy formed Wizzard he had two bands to manage instead of one. Wood was contracted to Arden until 1977 and Arden made sure that Roy didn't work for anyone else.
Dio once said that the person who introduced him to Tony Iommi was Sharon (Arden at the time). I think that maybe she and her dad thought, "If we break these guys up, we can have 2 for the price of one" and not long after Ozzy was fired.
On Eddie And The Falcons’ track Crazy Jeans I can swear that there is a lyric that goes something like ‘I got one bullet left for big Don Arden, gonna blow his guts out baby, what d’ya say?’ The vocals are purposely muddled and there’s no lyric sheet but one day I heard it and can’t unhear it now.
I've heard plenty of words concerning Don Arden over the years, and not a single one of those words was anything good. I think 90% of all the record company big boys, as well as management, were all in business to take their artists for everything they could get out of them. Greedy bastards.
Back in the day Don arden owed jeff lynne a load of money. Jeff lynne went to don arden house and sharon answered the door -Then jeff stormed in shouting get your dad here NOW ! Arden showed up and paid jeff the money then ELO sacked ardon.
Plus that Space ship tour had so many damm problems the sound would echo in it messing up the string section so they had to use recordings of the strings
Don Arden supposedly had his goons hang Jimmy Page out a window for trying to recruit Steve Marriott from the Small Faces to what became Led Zeppelin. In the biography I read, that single event was part of the reason why Page loved Peter Grant. The man was a terrifying behemoth that wasn't going to let anyone touch his band. Obviously the bigger reasons were that Grant believed in Page, he was extreme hands on, he always made sure the band was paid fairly, and that they retained complete creative control. Interestingly enough, Grant was originally hired by Don Arden.
It was actually Robert Stigwood they dangled out the window. What he did to Jimmy Page was send him a letter threatening to break his fingers if he didn't stay away from Steve.
These managers and producers may be questionable human beings but very often they are crucial to the success too. Weinstein was an outstanding movie producer for example, many classics may never have seen the light without him, he basically financed and greenlit 1990s new Hollywood as we know it. I suspect things were the same with Arden in the british music business.
The music industry has a dark underbelly. It's cut throat and nasty, that's why most artists hand over the business side to ruthless POSs like Arden. Flip side is that unscrupulous people don't care who they rip off, including those they represent.
ELO and similar bands like them at the time was are one of the reasons why Punk happened. Prog rock was bland and pretentious with it's clown shows and the music was stale, distant, secondary and laughable. As soon as I heard the sex pistols in 76 this kind of music and act died a death for me and for many of my peers, overnight it's sound and look was a joke to many of us. Don Arden just aided that decline even faster and helped it in a way as it killed it off quicker, so he did something right.
Jeff Lynne is still playing his music to millions. I don't know of any punk bands that can fill Wembley stadium many decades on. Only very early ELO was proper "prog". (The Battle Of Marston Moor being a good example.) What it became was the vehicle for a genius pop / rock songwriter, which is why when punk and the new wave hit, ELO was still able to sell millions of records a la A New World Record, Out Of The Blue, Discovery and Time. All music is a product of its era. I was part of punk and the new wave. Boomtown Rats. The Motors. The Jam.etc etc. Brilliant stuff. But so was ELO.
Arden used to say, "Harvey Weinstein is a son to me'. Says it all.
They are all like a gang. Every one of them knows the rest.
@JP McCray and the blues. and shoes. and crews. dang, I sound like Dr Suess now!

Good info. I've wondered about this.

Jeff should be knighted for his contribution to music.
Music& actors.... dodgy managers accountants eh. I would have been scared constantly they were cheating me as too many ultimately do.
Good!
Apparently He owed Jeff 4 million dollars on Unpaid royalties but Jeff found documents that proved that....
Don was lucky that Jeff was not a member of the Peaky Blinders.
Arden made ELO into a circus act - Jeff's music would have carried the band without Arden's interference. Thankfully, Jeff kicked him into touch.
So much bad publicity over decades has been produced just to get into media. It has backfired often. You're right ELO did not need it.

I'd think so since Bev Bevan was Black Sabbath's drummer for a spell.
RIP Hugh Mcdowell

Yes, eternal life is meant to be for everyone!
read his ELO story marvellous
Wonder if the guies in ELO and Black Sabbath knew each other well since they were both managed by Don Arden?
they were all brummies
Bev Played with Black Sabbath in 1983, when Bill Ward pulled out of a tour.
LouisvilleTorn8o yes members of E L O and sabbath certainly did know each other. They all were connected through this bum.
Brummies!
Zeppelin too.

@ palexa43- sounds a little like Weller but no, it's not him- too Cockney to be Weller.
Think it's Roger Daltrey
What documentary is this from ?
Wow that is a shocker.
don arden is sharon osbourne's dad!
i tink it's roger daltrey.
Martin Kemp, I reckon. Too young for Daltrey.
No,not Daltrey or Weller. Possibly Ian Drury?
It's actor Frank Harper
Just read his book
Mr big
A lot of people didn't like Arden, They looked on him as a crook and a bit of a hood!
Because he was!
Is this Weller narrating this?
It's Frank Harper
Its Neil Maskell from Football Factory.
Im distantly related to Don Arden
I'm sorry
