I'm so glad Melvyn finally did a video interview. He has always been my favorite in the band. It was interesting to hear how his short time, too short in my opinion, in ELO started. A great musician!
ELO in Detroit 1976, sold out both days, they were HUGE even then...the best band then & now still lives, Melvyn & Mik were the greatest!

February, 1977 was 2 nights at Cobo Arena. March, 1976 was only 1 show. In between was 2 shows (I think several days apart) at Pine Knob in Sept. 1976. Wilf Gibson, Mike Edwards, Colin Walker, Mike DeAlbuquerque - THAT was the best ELO lineup.
I've been in love with this guy from the very first time I saw him, with those beautiful eyes he's got, shyly playing "Last Train to London". He looked and still he does, like a very handsome man to me!
@EvelynKeynes It's a known fact by him and other ELO band mates that he was camera shy, as the band photos will show. He's the guy half buried at the bottom of the back of the Face The Music album cover.
I'm glad Mel Gale did this interview - but I suspect there was more that couldn't be shown even now for legal reasons. I'm guessing one question that was asked - which is a bit of an elephant in the room - concerned the circumstances surrounding the sacking of the string section. Apparently it was done by letter, which is a pretty vile way to treat anyone, let alone three people who were integral to the ELO concept, particularly at the band's peak. I acknowledge that because the album Discovery was "disco, very", it didn't need the three string players in the studio, as it only required the smooth orchestrations that were part of the disco era's identity. But the album Time, for all it's absolutely fantastic songs and brilliantly clever futuristic concept desperately needed - in my VERY VERY HUMBLE OPINION - the string section to lift some of those songs out of the album's uniform 80's, electronic feel. Ticket To The Moon, Rain Is Falling and 21st Century Man being the three I've always had in mind. To rub salt in the wounds, when the few TV promo shoots were done for the singles from Balance Of Power - an album with absolutely no actual strings on it at all, two non-cellists were used to mime the synth parts that equated to cellos. Perhaps one day someone will re-record that album using a string section? And maybe they'd ask Mik and Mel to join them! RIP Hugh Mcdowell.

The string players were hired musicians, paid a wage. No need for any formal dismissal.
I assume the Sharon he mentions at the end is Sharon Osbourne, or Sharon Levy at that time. Her father, Don Arden, was ELO's manager and I'm guessing she was his assistant or something like that. At the time she was probably getting more and more interested in being a manager herself.
There probably is, but I suspect there are legal issues regarding some questions that were asked - particularly about how the string section were apparently fired by letter.
Apparently, not at all. ELO were offered the top spot at Knebworth in 1979, but he declined, and Zeppelin did it instead. In fact, they stayed off the road completely that year after releasing _Discovery._
Sadly Hugh McDowell lost his battle against cancer on 06-11-2018 he was 65. R.I.P. Hugh.
Would have love seeing Hugh interview too.

Love at first sight for me as well. And I agree with you, he's still good looking.
Greatest Band "ever"! Mel was great in ELO.
Melvyn was my favorite to so talented and very cute.
YES!!!!
He will always be so handsome to me. I was so infatuated with him when I was thirteen. He was very talented. I hope he is well and happy today. 😘
I saw Melvyn when I was a teenager seeing ELO at Louisville Gardens circa 1976. It also featured Roxy music and pre-Steve Perry Journey. Epic show.
A very fine boy, through him ELO got something of decency and dignity!
‘Ello, I’d like to order some ‘ello napkins please..
It must have been February 1975 when Mel joined ELO, I saw them in Leeds University that month and Mel was playing with them.
Did Melvyn do the exploding cello bit?
It's good to see Melvin Gale being open since he never liked to be photographed.
how can you say that

still lovely...I love you mellie!!!!!
Your in the band until not needed then your a salaried employee... ?
Great to hear from Melvyn, he played a major part in the band, thanks.

Gale, Edwards y el gran McDowell, sin ellos, ELO no habría sido lo mismo
Todos tenian lo suyo en la Elo
Yello instead of ELO? Understandable! Nice to hear Mel! Next I want hear Hugh.
Two misunderstood phone calls in the same band's history......
@@Drchainsaw77 no answer?😂
Sadly the chance to hear Hugh has passed. RIP.

Still beautiful after all these years! ❤ Happy Belated Birthday!
There is more of this somewhere?!

@@timwingham8952 which stinks!🤬He deserved better!!

Jeff lynne did not enjoy touring. That's a bit surprising.

Is there any more? Pt2?..
on which year is this interview released
Thank you for this!
Does anyone know if there's a continuation of this interview anywhere?
I wish the rest was available to see. I'd like to hear from Mel about the string section's sacking. Seemed pretty cruel to me.
Agreed! Thanks for replying ❤
What year was that recorded?
Oh my! True!
I can’t believe how old they are. I am 50 now. Been listening to them for years. Monotonous. UFO 😂
