  • A proposal to install a public access route across Bennerley Viaduct in the East Midlands is currently being considered by planning authorities.
The structure - owned by Railway Paths Ltd - is one of the country's only two surviving wrought iron trestle viaducts. The other, at Meldon in Devon, also hosts a cycle path.
A campaign group - the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct - has been carrying out works beneath the Grade II* listed structure, establishing different wildlife habitats within each of the main spans. As part of the proposal, these would be linked together by a footpath.
Most of the £700,000 project cost has already been raised and it's hoped contractors will be on site in the autumn.
