I was an apprentice bricklayer back in 1965 and was working at Eastwood on a new vicarage. I would admire the giltbrook viaduct when we went past it on our way to and from work it made me so proud to be a bricklayer. The viaduct was an incredible achievement of skill from the bricklayers of that era. I cannot believe that it was pulled down it could have been a beautiful tourist attraction. I worked for Thomas Fish and sons and a labourer we had at the time actually worked on the bank in Eastwood many years before he said that the bricks for the bank and other materials were delivered by horse and cart. His name was Arthur Johnson he was 65 and had been working for Thomas Fish for 50 year. The truck driver that worked for Fish was the same one who drove the horse and cart to the bank in Eastwood and had been with Fish longer than Arthur. I now live in Australia but I have many happy memories of my apprenticeship with Thomas Fish.
Excellent again cycled the bridge myself pity all our Excellent rail infrastructure was vandalised beeching it would have been a jewel to have it now with all the conjestion
Wow, great memories. I lived in Kimberley from approx. 1962 to 1965 and remember the station and the old steam engines very well. I actually went to Church Hill School, which was a boys' school back then.
The bridge has been renovated and proper access made now to get to it. So pleased for the friends of bennerley Viaduct they hit it to this stage for the benefit of all visitirs. Lovely area for the canal trails and walks. Thanks for covering the old railway line routes, we had thought to explore them too
Those metal sculptures are just such an awesome addition to the former railway route. You must have a good pair of walking boots to clamber up and down those banks! What an incredibly helpful video.
Second time of watching this one, Ant. Before we left for Tassie we used to walk down from our home (upper High Street, opposite the old primary school) to join this path down the hill. We didn't go further than the Old Buffers Seat" though; because we had a three and a half year old (walking) and a one year old in a backpack seat ☺. Next tim over from Tassie we will revisit . Thank you so much for a really wonderful experience. How we wish the Giltbrook Viaduct was also remaining.
That was excellent thanks Ant. Fantastic walk lovely scenery and of course this beaut train pics. Drone footage was incredible. Thanks so much for taking me along. Please stay safe and take care
Did it on Friday, got wrong train from Sheffield but got Ilkeston flyer from Derby. Walked up canal to Langley Mill , back to Sheffield, great day and a few beers after, thanks.
You walked behind my house! We live just before the Awsworth railway station. The muddy path next to the football field is all sorted out now, thankfully.
Ant your vids get better and better. even if you werent remotely interested in railways etc i think you would enjoy this one in particular. so beautifully shot in wonderful light and you are so easy to listen to. so calming. as i am an industrial history nut its perfect for me. hope you and amy are well and enjoying your lives on the canal x
I'm pleased to hear The Friends of Bennerley had got in touch. What a good idea, of doing the walks as videos. This was great and very useful. Amazing photos at the end with beautiful lighting.
The idea of making some vids for circular walks is a great idea, showing how to get to the places you go to/parking is also an excellent idea. That video had everything - stations, signals, sculptures, football pitch, a long lost bridge and even a bit of frost towards the end, great effort.
What an incredible walk. Before and after photos brilliant. You explained everything so clear so that anyone trying your walk will follow it so easily. Well done. Loved the drone footage and also keeping our eye on the windmill. The sunset was magnificent. Thank you so much.
Super video Ant. We want people to combine their visits to Bennerley Viaduct with a walk. This video whets the appetite beautifully. When you come down those steps in Awsworth, pop into the Gate Inn . Cracking pub.
Really enjoy your work sir. As a retired train driver with 31 years on the footplate you bring back great memories. Would recommend this along with Rediscovering lost railways and Pastfinder as the best three sites on you tube for class nostalgia. Keep up the good work.
Hello Ant - greetings from Poland. Congratulations on a wonderful video. A brilliant guided walk, full of useful information and excellent historical facts. Your camera work and drone footage brought the surroundings to life. Your commentary as usual, made understanding what we were looking at even more interesting. Stay safe please and pass on my regards to Amy. See you again soon
Great walk been around there quite a bit over the years been up to the viaduct years ago from the Erewash canal side looking forward to walking over it this year sometime shame the other viaduct still not standing that would be some sight these days 👍
Ant, you seem to live in history heaven, you have so subject matter to choose from. Always enjoy the old B&W photos you put into your work. Also, great drone work, thanks for your time and effort.....
Hi Ant I was born within sight of giltbrook viaduct and we always called it 40 bridges not arches and I have movie footage of steam trains going through Awsworth station and crossing Bennerley Viaduct , the signal arm is upside down on the post but I like your adventures in and around Nottingham thank you .
Thank you Ant. That was a lovely video and such an interesting area. We have the Sidmouth Junct. disused line near us and it would be such an asset for the area to have it as a path. Hope Amy is well. Take care.
Hi Ant, great video again with excellent drone footage. You have so much industrial history in and around your area. I’m down on the south coast where there is very little and what we did have is gradually disappearing to be replaced by ‘modern’ development. Thank you for the trek.
Great walk and epic drone footage of ‘The Iron Giant’, Ant’ 🤩 Loved it and cannot believe I’ve never visited it before or after the refurb’. What an incredible piece of history for us 🙂👍🏻🙏🏻
Hi, absolutely love the video and do this walk often as I live in Awsworth. You will be disappointed to here that I have recently had an application for a pedestrian crossing on the A6096 Shilo Way DECLINED as the council state there hasn't been enough traffic collisions there. Essentially the council's reasoning is that not enough pedestrians have been killed yet to force them to put a pedestrian crossing there for access to the viaduct. I believe its still being pursued by the parish council and also the Viaduct friends group. It really is a horrible crossing and not safe at all now for the huge numbers of pedestrians that the viaduct is attracting.
What a lovely video - you really know how to sell Nottinghamshire! Fantastic viaducts, loved the old signal and the sculptures, not to mention the beautiful music for piano and strings. (what was it?) Thanks so much - again!
excellent video👍 shame the giltbrook viaduct couldn't have been put to good use like the other viaduct instead of demolishing it part of our heritage gone 😟any reason why it was demolished
love the walk , me and my mrs are not spring chickens and would love to know how many miles you have done , as we can only do 3 to 5 , see you soon. cheers
Brilliant Video watching now... The red and black railway post style bits I've seen along hucknall road in Nottingham too. From Moor Bridge down to City Hospital ways. Great Drone footage as usual too. Infact good camera work per say. Always a very steady hand unlike me haha. Where are you from btw buddy? You've got a slight accent. Sorry I've always wandered haha. You don't seem ever as nervy as me, then again I've been mugged twice now on my journeys. So I'm always on edge I'm afraid. Anyways great as usual
Thanks so much John. I did this section in the opposite direction late 2019 but not as detailed as this version. I'll look to doing more of this route though
@@TrekkingExploration look forward to it, found the whole railway history of Kimberley fascinating over the past two years, I live near the Watnall tunnel (the bigger one) and didn’t even know it existed Keep them blogs coming
Hi there. I can but reiterate the comments which precede mine. 👍👍 So how long would you say that would take from Kimberly Rainbow 1 stop to the bus stop for the No. 2?
Hi Phil. To be honest the 2 is the shorter walk also the nicest as it's mostly along the canal. The 1 you would need to walk along that busy duel carriageway and cross roads

Crackin' video, I was so enthralled I let my mug of tea go cold. Great idea to film the walks of your choice, look forward to more.
Cheers fella. I'll owe you a brew if I see you out and about 😂
My first memory of coming to Ilkeston in 1966 age 10 was travelling underneath the Giltbrook viaduct at Awsworth in dads van. 😉😉
I was a signalman on that line in 1955 but have lived in Canada most of my life, just 200 yards from an active railway line!
I think it's fantastic that the infrastructure and heritage is being acknowledged and respected - thankyou Ant.😃
Thank you very much Dennis 🙂

Thank you John. I'm pleased the weather changed and it worked out well
I'm pleased to hear The Friends of Bennerley had got in touch.
What a good idea, of doing the walks as videos.
This was great and very useful.
Amazing photos at the end with beautiful lighting.
It's a nice Idea isn't it? To try out different routes that include this viaduct. I'm pleased you enjoyed it

Good to see the viaduct being used as a focal point for some great walks.
What an incredible walk. Before and after photos brilliant. You explained everything so clear so that anyone trying your walk will follow it so easily. Well done. Loved the drone footage and also keeping our eye on the windmill. The sunset was magnificent. Thank you so much.
I hope it proves useful. I had to do it differently slightly from the usual method I use to explain locations etc. I think it worked well
Superb video, stunning views with the flood and sunset, one of my fav places to fly my drone. 👍
Gorgeous sunset. Thanks for the treat. Made my day.
Awwww brilliant thank you Kim
Another beautiful video for us , excellent drone footage and beautiful music . To see the old pictures are a bonus. Thanks so much .
Thanks Cathy I'm pleased you enjoyed it

Thanks Kieran. I'll be doing more / similar over the next few months
Lovely idea Ant, good commentary ,and helpful info on access and bus routes, etc,Beautiful sunset at the end too, xx
The way this builds up to the Bennerley Viaduct is incredible. It's like an adventure. Top stuff Ant 👍🏻

Please add in any future videos, the fact that the Bennerley Viaduct crosses from the Archdiocese of York into the Archdiocese of Canterbury.
Great walk Ant, pity a bit too far away for me, but nicely done.
Thank you. Maybe you'll get the opportunity to visit some time
Thanks for another great video 👍
Cheers Chris much appreciated
The second tunnel under the A610 is on Goodwin Drive, Kimberley
love the walk , me and my mrs are not spring chickens and would love to know how many miles you have done , as we can only do 3 to 5 , see you soon. cheers
That's a good idea for me to include in future walks. This one in particular was just over 3
Lol @ the British naming storms. How quaint.

No square walks or oblong one's ? Pmsl ps miss u
7:54 the signal is upside down and back to front.
Clearly knocked together by someone who knows nothing about railways.
have a look at Paul and Rebecca Whitewick channel as it may interest you.
bennerley saved but what an awful loss with the others ant
Absolutely. Hopefully it'll set a standard going forward and others can be saved
