In this video i take a walk along the former Great Northern Railway from Kimberley East Station via Awsworth and ending up at Bennerley Viaduct.
This is the first in a series of walks & videos featuring the Iron Giant aka Bennerley Viaduct.
Walked late afternoon leading up to a lovely sunset.

I was an apprentice bricklayer back in 1965 and was working at Eastwood on a new vicarage. I would admire the giltbrook viaduct when we went past it on our way to and from work it made me so proud to be a bricklayer. The viaduct was an incredible achievement of skill from the bricklayers of that era. I cannot believe that it was pulled down it could have been a beautiful tourist attraction. I worked for Thomas Fish and sons and a labourer we had at the time actually worked on the bank in Eastwood many years before he said that the bricks for the bank and other materials were delivered by horse and cart. His name was Arthur Johnson he was 65 and had been working for Thomas Fish for 50 year. The truck driver that worked for Fish was the same one who drove the horse and cart to the bank in Eastwood and had been with Fish longer than Arthur. I now live in Australia but I have many happy memories of my apprenticeship with Thomas Fish.
The bridge has been renovated and proper access made now to get to it. So pleased for the friends of bennerley Viaduct they hit it to this stage for the benefit of all visitirs. Lovely area for the canal trails and walks. Thanks for covering the old railway line routes, we had thought to explore them too
Excellent again cycled the bridge myself pity all our Excellent rail infrastructure was vandalised beeching it would have been a jewel to have it now with all the conjestion
I was a signalman on that line in 1955 but have lived in Canada most of my life, just 200 yards from an active railway line!
Wow, great memories. I lived in Kimberley from approx. 1962 to 1965 and remember the station and the old steam engines very well. I actually went to Church Hill School, which was a boys' school back then.
Those metal sculptures are just such an awesome addition to the former railway route. You must have a good pair of walking boots to clamber up and down those banks! What an incredibly helpful video.
You walked behind my house! We live just before the Awsworth railway station. The muddy path next to the football field is all sorted out now, thankfully.
Did it on Friday, got wrong train from Sheffield but got Ilkeston flyer from Derby. Walked up canal to Langley Mill , back to Sheffield, great day and a few beers after, thanks.
Ant your vids get better and better. even if you werent remotely interested in railways etc i think you would enjoy this one in particular. so beautifully shot in wonderful light and you are so easy to listen to. so calming. as i am an industrial history nut its perfect for me. hope you and amy are well and enjoying your lives on the canal x
So glad the bridge was restored! I still get upset thinking about the Bowstring Bridge in Leicester. Beautiful photography.

The idea of making some vids for circular walks is a great idea, showing how to get to the places you go to/parking is also an excellent idea. That video had everything - stations, signals, sculptures, football pitch, a long lost bridge and even a bit of frost towards the end, great effort.

I hope it proves useful. I had to do it differently slightly from the usual method I use to explain locations etc. I think it worked well

excellent video👍 shame the giltbrook viaduct couldn't have been put to good use like the other viaduct instead of demolishing it part of our heritage gone 😟any reason why it was demolished

Hi Ant I was born within sight of giltbrook viaduct and we always called it 40 bridges not arches and I have movie footage of steam trains going through Awsworth station and crossing Bennerley Viaduct , the signal arm is upside down on the post but I like your adventures in and around Nottingham thank you .
Hi, absolutely love the video and do this walk often as I live in Awsworth. You will be disappointed to here that I have recently had an application for a pedestrian crossing on the A6096 Shilo Way DECLINED as the council state there hasn't been enough traffic collisions there. Essentially the council's reasoning is that not enough pedestrians have been killed yet to force them to put a pedestrian crossing there for access to the viaduct. I believe its still being pursued by the parish council and also the Viaduct friends group. It really is a horrible crossing and not safe at all now for the huge numbers of pedestrians that the viaduct is attracting.
Lack of funding as always. Tory Britain
Great walk been around there quite a bit over the years been up to the viaduct years ago from the Erewash canal side looking forward to walking over it this year sometime shame the other viaduct still not standing that would be some sight these days 👍
Hi Ant, great video again with excellent drone footage. You have so much industrial history in and around your area. I’m down on the south coast where there is very little and what we did have is gradually disappearing to be replaced by ‘modern’ development. Thank you for the trek.

Please add in any future videos, the fact that the Bennerley Viaduct crosses from the Archdiocese of York into the Archdiocese of Canterbury.

The red and black railway post style bits I've seen along hucknall road in Nottingham too. From Moor Bridge down to City Hospital ways.

Thanks so much John. I did this section in the opposite direction late 2019 but not as detailed as this version. I'll look to doing more of this route though

So how long would you say that would take from Kimberly Rainbow 1 stop to the bus stop for the No. 2?
Hi Phil. To be honest the 2 is the shorter walk also the nicest as it's mostly along the canal. The 1 you would need to walk along that busy duel carriageway and cross roads
7:54 the signal is upside down and back to front.
