I installed a 12 v fuel pump $67 before the hand manual pump , Push button momentary switch $14 , inline fuse with holder $9. And rubber waterproof boot $4. Unscrew hand manual pump lid , push button and 10 seconds later release button , tighten manual lid .
I know what you mean about disliking to prime. I used to have to try to start the 1936 John Deere tractor when someone (one of my dear family, of course) had turned it off in the kerosene mode. I had to take off the petcock, dump out the kerosene, put gasoline into it, reaffix it, and then start turning the fly wheel which make my arms really tired. So, I feel your pain. Thank you for your gentle, even temperament!
The bad part: A lot of extra work for you. The good part: An interesting video for me. This was one of the many things I hated about driving a big truck. Always having to deal with some else's screw up. Safe Travels JBG
Now that I know it works just wait for the next problem I can dream up so I can watch how you solve it. Look forward to and enjoy all your videos. Safe Travels JBG
Put a valve stem for a tire onto a fuel cap so you can use your compressor to pressurize the fuel tank. That will push the fuel to the reefer engine....
We used to just stay hooked, use just a single jumper instead of two to jump the battery and leave it in manual instead of cycle so the battery would charge, after we primed it.
you need to turn that little red knob counter clock wise to open the bleeder port and close it back after it starts. and even after it starts getting hard to pump, you need to keep pumping to help it start.
You must put the unit in auto so the electric fuel pump near the fuel tank will run while priming. In most cases it will try to start but just keep priming while it cranks. If need be turn unit off then back on. Of course this will only work with a charged battery.
Wrap a piece of rag around an airline and insert line into donkey fuel tank, add a little pressure to the tank, and if you had the pump / inj line lose on the donkey engine the fuel will be forced right through the system, lock it down, and crank it up. Or use ether, up to you:::) If you use ether, two rotations of the engine will fire it up.
Hey Johnny....Get a fuel cap for the reefer tank, drill and tap it for a valve stem. Then you can pressurize the fuel tank, with your air hose, to push the fuel up to the reefer....Keep the cap in your jockey box for when you need it. Prime the reefer with very little effort.
LOL I understood that...I meant you should get A cap. put in a valve stem and keep it in your jockeybox, then you have it whenever you get stuck with a reefer that needs primed. The cap on the reefer tank is not modified. I had a reefer that needed primed a few times. It took less than five minutes to get it started. Mind you....The battery was not dead.
John, when you get a chance, get the Halo Volt so you don't Have, to use jumper, cables !! They, sell them on, QVC look for It on your cable TV Channels.
Company I work for used to run Refer and every one of them I went to pick up either Batteries were dead, out of fuel or both... We even had one driver that filled the tank with gas, flipped the switch and left. Gas in a Diesel smh....
Late comment, but those electric fork lift connectors are nice when it comes to quickly connecting battery power for jump starting and charging. They come in a number of sizes and can be found on eBay. But it did look like your batteries needed some care - oxidized poles.
I'm going to tell you that you made it hard then it was. I have the same truck as you. I got long cables or make your own from a welding supply store. That way you don't have to disconnect. Make sure you use 2 gauge cables.
i hate when that happens i had 29000 lbs of shrimp load lost a couple summers back 110 degree. heat qnd no refer for a day didnt work.out so well i refused that load thats the only load i have ever refused to hook to o.m.g it smelled like death
20 year's ago I fueled my refer at the Loves in Fort Worth TX then went to bed. I woke up 6hrs later because the refer wasn't running. Turns out someone stole the fuel.
If the "engineer" who designed the fuel system had really been thinking, he'd have put a electric lift pump on it to avoid all the crap of priming it by hand...... I got out of reefers because of crap like this...!
A long and varied career that started in the '70's. Tried everything once or twice...flats, tankers, reefers, vans...even heavy haul. As I got older, decided that more money, less work was the way to go. Reired from OTR vans back in '11, but still work for a local company running local.
I wouldn't stand out there playing with that. I would have called dispatch for a tech to come out & get the damn thing going. I HOPE the dip shit that ran t dry was FIRED!
always expect problems when you do not have a steady trailer behind you. even after you have been off and another driver has been on your truck. had some crazy shit in 27 years of driving.
I guess I always cheated on priming I had an extra fuel cap for the reefer tank with a tire valve stem installed and an air hose that connected to glad hand, couple pounds of air pressure and crack a fuel line open made it much easier especially when it was -10 deg outside!
In this modern age of trucking you would think that there would be a connector from the truck to the trailer that would allow it to be able to regen that battery quickly and even do a startup if necessary and as far as that hand pump goes I hate jerking that thing off I hate it, I hate it. why they can't put some kind of a little nub sticking out there where you can put like a cordless drill on it and wine that thing up in a hurry I have no idea but like John said engineers are some of the dumbest people on earth🤔
JBG TRAVELS looking at reefer from front top black pipe coming out of engine just a jubilee clip unscrew with screwdriver pull black pipe off spray into intake while engine trying to fire up it will start after a few attempts you can do this with cars to if they run out of fuel petrol or diesel
If you use your air hose and a tennis ball to compress the fuel tank it'll push fuel up into the engine and you don't have to do all that silly priming all you have to do just like the tennis ball put it over to fuel neck punch a hole all the way through the ball put your air hose in the other side and start blowing air air pressure sender fuel right on up
I agree with about the engineers are the dumbest people. They redesign something that didn't need to be redesigned. Then do a controlled test and then never fix they most obvious issues.
Just another one of the MANY things that sucks about be a responsible driver in a company full of lazy idiots. Far too many lazy irresponsible dumbasses driving trucks these days. I feel your pain. I just couldn't take it anymore so I came back to construction and I am happy again.
WHEN YOU WERE WORKING ON THE REEFER, WERE YOU GETTING PAID AT THAT TIME OR JUST ON DUTY SUCKING UP YOUR TIME? SEEMS LIKE SOME LABOR LAWS HAVE FORGOTTEN THE AMERICAN TRUCKER. TRUMP! WE NEED YOU
I ran reefers for 4 years, many years ago. Xtra headaches, units have mechanics problem, you drive out of route (unpaid) to get it fixed, screws up your trip planning/hours, have reefer noise right behind bunk, etc. Unless getting paid a LOT more to run it, stick with box.
Thanks Kenneth, great info my friend.. I did local fuel delivery all over So Cal for 1 yr , talk about stress ! .. I'm giving up Ski Instructing after 20 seasons, (no more hot cocoa and high fives).. I might be crazy?..but I want to be a real OTR Trucker..living the Trucker life... I truly can't wait..Dry Van long haul it is.. Were is the best place to get Chicken fried steak? do you like rest stop or truck stops?.... Thanks

Running out of reefer fuel is a no - no.Enough to make a preacher cuss !!!
Serenity now, serenity now.

Bet you someone left it running because the battery was dead hoping that someone would get it before it ran out of fuel.
The bad part: A lot of extra work for you.
The good part: An interesting video for me.
This was one of the many things I hated about driving a big truck. Always having to deal with some else's screw up. Safe Travels JBG
So you were the one who left it running so I could do a video of the problem? Hahaha😱😱😁😁😏😬😨
Now that I know it works just wait for the next problem I can dream up so I can watch how you solve it. Look forward to and enjoy all your videos. Safe Travels JBG
Love your vidios Johnny Be Good
@@herbbenson6884 You ass.
Put a valve stem for a tire onto a fuel cap so you can use your compressor to pressurize the fuel tank. That will push the fuel to the reefer engine....
Does that really work?
need to put fuel in the fuel, filter and the open the bleeder and then prime it cause it air bound. sucks that batery week
I'd be screaming loud and long about the 'considerate driver' who let it run out of fuel.
I can say the same
Was going to say that
We used to just stay hooked, use just a single jumper instead of two to jump the battery and leave it in manual instead of cycle so the battery would charge, after we primed it.
Amen on the engineers. They should be made to spend a year or two maintaining any equipment they are going to be designing.
Mathew is right. filling the filter cuts way down on the priming time. All you need is a Lg pair of Channel Locks.
The refer has an electric fuel pump that will prime the engine if the unit is turned on!
This was and is common with the drivers today. No one does the pre-trip to include their refr.
Nice video. Sorry that u had to go through all that trouble. However I learnt something..where to find truck batteries....lol. Good video

Need to clean Blue's battery terminals
JBG you need to carry one of those portable battery packs for jump starting
John, when you get a chance, get the Halo Volt so you don't
Have, to use jumper, cables !!
They, sell them on, QVC look for
It on your cable TV Channels.
That's the reason I only ran dry box to many head aches !
Company I work for used to run Refer and every one of them I went to pick up either Batteries were dead, out of fuel or both... We even had one driver that filled the tank with gas, flipped the switch and left. Gas in a Diesel smh....
suppose to turn the red dial to open it a little to bleed air out also to get fuel flowing.
Oh really.. well I hope I won't have to do it soon.
Late comment, but those electric fork lift connectors are nice when it comes to quickly connecting battery power for jump starting and charging. They come in a number of sizes and can be found on eBay.
But it did look like your batteries needed some care - oxidized poles.
You should get your boss to get you a little handheld jumper pack there are some incredible ones out there.
Man that really sucks. It's not a good situation to deal with.
Its not that bad lol u guys overreact
Been there and done that! It's a process to get the reefer started when that happens!
I'm going to tell you that you made it hard then it was. I have the same truck as you. I got long cables or make your own from a welding supply store. That way you don't have to disconnect. Make sure you use 2 gauge cables.

jump box be a nice addition to your tools on board
If the "engineer" who designed the fuel system had really been thinking, he'd have put a electric lift pump on it to avoid all the crap of priming it by hand...... I got out of reefers because of crap like this...!
How long were you in it?
A long and varied career that started in the '70's. Tried everything once or twice...flats, tankers, reefers, vans...even heavy haul. As I got older, decided that more money, less work was the way to go. Reired from OTR vans back in '11, but still work for a local company running local.
Pop the fuel filter off and fill it at the pump when you fill the refer! Save ya a lot of pumping .
Engineers don't put a crank on it so you never forget to not turn off the reefer. :)
Hahaha
My FL looks like yours, same blue and all,but my batteries are in the catwalk area, jumping the reefer would ve been a breeze.
John you need to remove the corrosion from "Blue's " batteries
It's been done by the freightliner dealership
If that was morse code , I couldn't make out what you were saying. lol.
this is new for me. interesting. learning something new. sound like Morse code cool.
Phillip Lee its says i need fuel...
It's bad when nobody cares about others.
Is it times like these where you wish you drove a dry van?
I wouldn't stand out there playing with that. I would have called dispatch for a tech to come out & get the damn thing going. I HOPE the dip shit that ran t dry was FIRED!
I had the samething happen to before and you're right its a pain in the Caboose to prime them reefers
And a crank was too much to ask for?
always expect problems when you do not have a steady trailer behind you. even after you have been off and another driver has been on your truck. had some crazy shit in 27 years of driving.
What a bad boy.
A truly nasty surprise would be if something had been left inside that refer. The rest is just a huge pain in the rear.
JEFFREY
you got that right about engineers
LMFAO!!! I hate days like that.
yes that would suck , to have to prime it like that : (
you could pick up a cheap battery jump pack for under 50 bucks that would make your job easier
fill you fuel filter a few times mate it is easer than wanking that thing them pumps are a frikken pain
they don't put crank on to punish people for running out of fuel lol. problem in your case your not the idiot that did it!!
haha i got unlucky
If you blead yhe line its esyer if not your just compressing air.
seeMs like you have a lot of experience doing that
That’s because engineers don’t have to fix those things.
that stinks!!!
The same trailer you spent the night looking for only for it to have a dead battery again
Larry!!
Cold inwisconsin
buy a gladhand air hose and you will avoid doing that bullshit
I guess I always cheated on priming I had an extra fuel cap for the reefer tank with a tire valve stem installed and an air hose that connected to glad hand, couple pounds of air pressure and crack a fuel line open made it much easier especially when it was -10 deg outside!
That sounds so easy it must be some serious safety violation.
Battery charger and extension cord
Don't know what he is doing!!! Have to turn it on so the fuel pump fills the fuel filter etc before you prime!!!
Why not just an electric pump?
but some easy start spray spray into air intake while it's trying to start m8 takes a few attempts but will fire up after few minutes
But the question is, where is the intake on the reefer unit?
JBG TRAVELS looking at reefer from front top black pipe coming out of engine just a jubilee clip unscrew with screwdriver pull black pipe off spray into intake while engine trying to fire up it will start after a few attempts you can do this with cars to if they run out of fuel petrol or diesel
Would this work on an injected diesel engine?
JOHNBEA yes it would
If not a crank, at least something with a longer stroke, a bigger 'button' to push & easier access.
That great BIG TRUCK, & that itty bitty plunger? What a HOOT!
thats a lot of priming.
You need a rechargeable jump box and you would have saved yourself a bunch of time
😣😣😣😣
Wow John...what truck driver drop this trailer without no fuel...???'
And left it running
If you use your air hose and a tennis ball to compress the fuel tank it'll push fuel up into the engine and you don't have to do all that silly priming all you have to do just like the tennis ball put it over to fuel neck punch a hole all the way through the ball put your air hose in the other side and start blowing air air pressure sender fuel right on up
Excellent idea thanks
Merhaba çok çok çok çok çok çok güzel güzel güzel güzel güzel güzel güzel güzel güzel güzel güzel güzel güzel güzel güzel video
GETN UR FINGER GAME ONPOINT SUN
HOOK UP JUMPER CABLES...TURN OVER GIVE IT A SNIFF OF EITHER. IT WILL START AND BLEED OUT THE SYSTEM. SIMPLE
maybe get a booster pack.
Yeah, I never thought about that.. thanks
sound like a wang wang wang wang? :)
John are the ny operators that have "B Doubles " in the U.S.A.?
I'm not sure what you mean?
So it's Thursday whats u and intermixed truckers big surprise?

You will need a sandwich and a nap after that workout LoL I didn't feel a thing..
Hahaha
Pain the ass.
Just a lazy ass driver figuring some one else can do it. I seen this many times where other drivers push it down the line for others to deal with
WHEN YOU WERE WORKING ON THE REEFER, WERE YOU GETTING PAID AT THAT TIME OR JUST ON DUTY SUCKING UP YOUR TIME? SEEMS LIKE SOME LABOR LAWS HAVE FORGOTTEN THE AMERICAN TRUCKER. TRUMP! WE NEED YOU
i was thinking about hauling reefer? i better think again..what do you think? is it worth it? what's the plus side and minus?.. thanks

I HAVE TO TURN THE SOUND OF THE WIND OFF. SORRY.
Don't know what he is doing!!! Have to turn it on so the fuel pump fills the fuel filter etc before you prime!!!
