  • Figure Note:
Stop-Motion Transformation of Studio Series SS86-21 Ultra Magnus. Very good but overpriced. It’s basically a Voyager-class figure (or Leader-class if we’re being generous) being sold under the $80 “Commander” SKU. I tell you kids, you should see what we used to get for $40 back in the day under the Leader SKU. End the Fed. He has a fun feature where the arms and legs have releases so he can be dismembered like in the movie. Just remember: Stab wound in your side? Dead as a doornail. Completely dismembered? No problem.

    Speed run to Robot: 1:55
    Speed run to Truck: 2:13
    2x Run: 2:31
    End credits: 2:49
    Production Note: Easy peasy.
    Viewing Note:
If you want to follow along, I recommend skipping to the speed run and using your , and . keyboard keys to advance by single frames. Every step of the transformation is documented in the frames of the video, in what I consider to be the best sequence. With minimal rubbing and minimal parts-parking.

    Stunning figure. Redefines “mini masterpiece.”

Hey, Magnus? Aren't you supposed to have a cab that transforms into a separate robot?
"I can't deal with that now!"

Have like an MMC ABI-style figure that actually articulates inside the armor. Tricky engineering though. UM head is inside the white Optimus figure.

    Very clean looking transformation.

I like how this is all once piece instead of how he's usually depicted as an Optimus like bot in armor.

Man, I sure wish Hasbro’s production and distribution weren’t absolute shit. It would be nice if this “mainline” figure could be purchased new ANYWHERE right now, when it’s supposed to have been widely available for a little while at this point.
UPDATE! I ordered him through TFSource and got him today. I had to pay $95 plus $15 shipping, and I had to stalk multiple sites for a while to find one even preorder-able. I had to preorder and wait several weeks, and it was supposed to be even longer. I saw he’s now listed as preorder-able for another couple of months’ wait, and $20 more expensive. This hobby is not worth this level of hassle for mainline figures. And it’s not just Commander class; it’s everything. Hell, my local stores don’t even have spaces for Commander class anymore.
I think I’m going to back off mainline to a few per year ordered online, and just get some third party things that really interest me if available from here on out.

Most new things like this regardless of brand are nearly impossible to find at retail 😢

I had a TFSource preorder that they disappeared from my stack with zero notice. So I found one via walmart.com instead. I don't expect to EVER see this in a store.

Gorgeous Hasbro fig, and if I was an Ultra Magnus guy I would bite, but I'm happy with my WFC fig.

Really neat but given its lack of complexity (it is clever though) $90 is a joke, this is Masterpiece territory. I would have picked this up for 50-60 bucks just to have a more basic Magnus to fiddle with on desk but I will just continue to support the excellent 3rd party manufacturers instead.

I see people say this all the time, then drop 40 dollars on some horribly proportioned Legends scale figure from a third party.
