  • The making of "WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?"
It all began more than ten years ago as writer, Jemima Khan, looked to explore a story inspired by her experience of living in Pakistan for a decade.
She intended to show a more joyful and hospitable Pakistan than the one more commonly seen on our screens. “I wanted to do the #WorkingTitle romcom version of Pakistan for Western audiences for whom there is a tendency to view the country as either backwards or frightening. I hope this film shows some of the joy and colour I encountered in my ten years living there.” See it South African cinemas from 10 March.

As an English person growing up with very close Indian and Pakistani friends, I was already Au fait with Bollywood, and then introduced to Pakistani dramas, and I actually taught myself urdu( using the Roman script);so for me this film held a real magic, and watching the star power of Shabhana Azmi from India and also Sajal Ali from Pakistan, plus very talented British Asian actors, was a real treat!
I could so relate to Zoe and her mother, ( Emma Thompson could have been my mum!) who also embraced all my Indian and Pakistani friends broader families, and often attended Eid/ Diwali functions and wedding with me! at the same time I understand the character played by Sajal, and Shehzad! I found the script very profound in a post brexit racist Islamophobic Britain and I loved the music but for me the piece ‘d resistance was the Sufi rendition by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, whom I had seen a few years ago in Brisbane Australia where I now reside!
On a sad note is that while Sajal had worked in Bollywood, the current BJP hindutva narrative under Modi has stopped Pakistani actors from working in Bollywood, so for Sajal and Shabhana to collaborate they had to do it outside of their respective countries, via the British Asian route!😳! Jemima I solute you for bringing laughter and very poignant dialogues in this film and for showing us a different Pakistan, which I hope to visit one day!

For islamophobia , certain obnoxious Muslims are also very much responsible if not more, many of whom you could find in comments section ,social media platforms or as content creators.
A certain category of Muslims give out that Muslim supremacist vibes along with attitude of excessive self righteousness and moral superiority.
And of course there are numerous cases of religiously motivated terrorism , criminal offenses and majority of them are committed by people who identify themselves as Muslim who are also responsible for Islamophobia.
Of course it is dumb to target all for actions of certain people but you know humans have an innate tendency to generalize due to brain's search for patterns and trying to fit everything in one of the patterns it knows.
Even rules are made seeing what happens in majority of cases not in exceptional ones
      Spoke a lot
I know it is quite irrelevant to your comment but all of these came to my mind while reading your comment..
      Anyways Heyyy!!!!!
Do you have indian Or pakistani roots?
You seem to be interested a lot in what is going on in the indian subcontinent.
Btw did you find me islamophobic?
      Just asking.

current hindutva narative ? dude wtf . people only understand when it happens to them, do you even know how many bomb blasts india faced between 1990-2013 there were series of blasts in delhi mumbai hyderabad and the holy city of varanasi . when india provided proof to pakistan that these terrorists are being operated from their soil, they didn't took any action, these actors who you're so considered about didn't even condemned it. so its very likely for a sane country to cut ties from a hostile one, and as a english person you even doesn't have a right to call on others . after all your ancestors did this to my motherland considering that you should be thoughtful before giving your premature opinion about things.

Arranged marriages are more successful because you accept someone with knowing anything about him/her.
And until you find bad habits in him/her he probably have overcame them

Funny how that arbitrary Radcliffe Line has rendered our post 1947 Great Subcontinent dubiously nameless: Asian, Eastern, South Asian.
I for one, refer to myself, with deliberate INCLUSIVE intent, as inviolably DESI = shayed Pakistani, shayed Hindustani.
Having got that out of my system, this is one great movie I’m just longing to see, as my compensation for a real visit to my beautiful sister country, Pakistan.
InshaAllah, I will in fact someday soon set foot into the warm embrace of the real Pakistan 🥰 ❤️

These clips are truly heartwarming - I've admired Lilly for some time, and Kaz seems to also fit well with my especially well-loved, highly respected screen giants like Emma Thompson, Shabana Azmi, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan - all of whom seem to infuse beautifully together into what promises to be a most interesting and endearing movie. My culture could certainly use more of this positivity. Can't wait to see it!! Nicky, Shekhar, and Jemima, accolades on a great job bringing this together in such an uplifting light!

The cinematic experience is beautiful the environment and interior decor and the costumes. However the depiction of Muslims praying and simultaneously drinking alcohol was a real shame and pandered to Western audiences.
Assisted marriages is a successful concept but sadly not portrayed in this film.

    • @gerryburntwood9617

Rubbish Movie, Jamiamh seems confused. in her interview she is saying opposite to her movie. Sajel role was not clear, on one hand she is Satti Sawteri and going for an arrange marriage & on the other hand, on her Mehndi she is doing vulgar dance and introducing her boyfriend to the guy she was marring next day and latter on sharing her boyfriend messages with her husband. If she was that bold why she has not told to her parents that she like someone else. So many blunders with immature effort without having proper understanding of the culture.

It’s not uncommon for girls to behave in this manner, if any of you watched an old film called Bhaji on the beach, there they have a very sophisticated Indian woman flabbergasted with how conservative the UK Indians were compared to the Indians in Mumbai! So it’s completely understandable that Sajal would portray an image, but is actually more ‘westernised’ than her British Pakistani peer group! I say this not to show disrespect, but because I know this to be the case amongst my Pakistani and I’d Ian friends!
