Visiting PAI Thailand | What Are My First Impressions?

  • In today's vlog, I get to see the town of Pai in Northern Thailand for the first time after a long drive. I checked into the Hotel and headed for the town center. My early impression was that Pai is a lot different from Chiang Mai. I already stopped at the amazing Pai Memorial bridge and the Pai Canyon, and I loved it. Will i carry on to Mae Hong Son on the motorbike? The next 3 days in Pai will decide. Let's check out Pai and see what this town is all about.

Cant believe those bungalows were 1000 a night. When i first went to pai 11 years ago those kind of prices were unheard of. 400 a night was living it up. You could get a nice place to yourself for 250. It was mainly a recluse for the hippy backpacker genre and a sanctuary for a lot of young thai beatnik types who hustled money whatever way they could. I was there when the first backpacker hostel just opened and actually stayed in it for a bit. Everyone stayed longer than planned because it was so cheap and the vibe was very loose, farang and thai people mixed together. I never went back there again went i returned to Thailand after a few years break as i imagined it became more known and westernised. Seems like i was right. Good to see Pai again. Looking forward to the next episode Wayne 😎👍🍻

Yes mate, it's quite expensive at the minute. The first place i stayed was expensive, but I moved to a cheaper place after. Both the bungalow vlogs coming up next . It's a cool town, but it has been westernized. I found a nice little bungalow for a half-decent price. Hope you good Paul mate. Thanks buddy.

Jikko > great selection of beers . Skip Hot Springs but if you want you can go into a resort nearby for 100 baht for the same hot spring water .
See the White Buddha . Hippies ? Yeah . I’m 67 and consider myself an old hippie but looks deceive lol . Short hair no dreds haha . Weed shops everywhere now .
Just get out on Lucille and ride around outside of town . You’ll love it . Enjoy ! I’ll be out on bike tomorrow . Hope I see you ! In the future you’ll have to go to Maehongson . Decorations up for Loi Kratong and high season . Enjoy brother ! Tell Charlee the owner of Charlee and Lek I said hello He will wait on you most likely. Where you asked "God knows what's up that area" - if you had taken that left it goes up past the hospital, and a bit of a walk further on, by the Wat Hua Na temple there's a market/discount type place where we buy stuff regularly. Bound to have some affordable flip-flops there :) Bit of a walk, so better to go on the bike.
And my wife makes another appearance - 19:40, the lady in the spotted yellow skirt, out getting her dinner supplies. She pops up now & then in these videos.
We are considering quitting Pai (she's lived there for 40 years) because it has become so busy. 20 years ago it was still reasonably sleepy, but as we ease into our 60's it may be time to find a little village off the main road.

I'm glad you're enjoying Pai Wayne. I went there for several nights over a decade ago. Had in my mind a quaint idealic rural town nestled amongst the hills. Was a bit disappointed it was so built up with concrete streets in a boring grid pattern catering primarily to tourists. Not what I was expecting. I stayed on the other side of the bridge which was less spoilt IMO. Countryside is beautiful but I was happy to return to Chiang Mai. You obviously need a change of scene so good to see it's working out for you. I was told by a traveller that Pai is a big honeymooner magnet. Relieved you survived that narrow pathway in the gorge. Pretty dodgy.

I really like the small town feel of Pai. Thanks for introducing me to it; unfortunately, it does look overrun by foreigners - and yes, I realize the irony of me saying that, but still wanting to visit lol. Serious question: At 50-80 Baht per plate, how does one not be tempted to try at least 3-4 items on the menu at a time? I'm asking as a semi-unfit foodie who loves Thai food; the street food, seafood, and night markets will be my downfall. Thanks again!

Why don’t you like farangs? 1500 a month for that tiny gym is a pretty steep. Looks like they have hardly any equipment not to mention that it’s open to the stinking hot air and pollution.

@@WalkAboutWayne a farang who don't like farangs. Think you might be in the wrong country Pal. I pay less per month here in Sydney fur fully equipped air conditioned gym with state of the art equipment but whatever.

@@bsways Don't think you get me pal. Course I like farangs, but don't need to be in major tourist zones 24/7. A few days is plenty. Northern Thailand is full of places with less farangs my son. I don't come half way across the world to be mixing with foreigners all day long. Pai's a small place, with demand on gyms, that's why. Just think about what your saving on rent, and you'll be fine my dude.

If the tourists were not there, then Pai would be good? What you should have said is if the farang were not there. I never live in an area with lots of farang because it is better to be the only farang in the village.

Looks like a nice place for a visit, but for us old guys, we need to live closer to hospitals. Plus, I don't want to move to Thailand to be around more foreigners than Thais...

It's a great town Brian. I'm not sure about the hospitals here, but i think anything major would need to be taken care of in Chiang Mai, so that could be a problem. I'm sure outside the town, i could find a more thai neighbourhood. Thanks mate.

Farangs/Tourists call them what you like contributed to 883 Billion thai baht to thailands GDP in 2020 alone. They are integral to the survival of the thai people, and economy. I like your channel wayne you give good value, but you seem to always be bleeting on about to many tourists. You, me will never be anything but a tourist in this country, even if married to a thai and living here forever. We will always be the farang. If you want zero farang, then don't vlog in tourist locations ! 😆 Having said that keep up the good work.🙏

Please don't by pass when I say tourist are great for the country also. My views are always balanced. Ofcourse tourists are good for Thailand, we all know that, and we all know the numbers. Many counties need tourism. Yes, I prefer a Thai neighborhood, It don't mean I don't want Farangs here. You can be a farang here and like to find Thai areas. What has vlogging in a tourist location got to do with me liking to live in a Thai area? I'll vlog loads more tourist areas, don't mean I'll live there. Vlogging is totally all about going to places and giving reviews and opinions. Nice one, thanks for liking the vlogs 👍
