Actually sound depends on a lot of things. Exhaust, turbo, and firing order are the major ones. The turbo blends the exhaust pulses and helps make it sound similar to the Supra. The manifold and type of exhaust play another large role in how the sound develops.
I'm surprised the engine is so little known. I'm a big Chevy guy and I didn't learn about the Vortec 4200 until a week ago when a co worker was talking about the straight 5 that came in the same series. Now it's my first choice swap for the '80 AMC Concord DL sedan I just got.
@@cpufreak101 Let's be honest here. The MK3 may be my personal favorite Supra but its still far from the JDM legend status that the fanboys hold the MK4 to.
good to hear it's still running, perhaps post a Christmas update? although a slim market, a few of us on the interwebz wonder what happened to this (also, may my friend include this in a potential video compilation?)
What happened to this car? I’ve been coming back to this video for a while now. to see if there are any updates but I just noticed it’s from 9 years ago lol
Me: I should replace the AMC 4.2l in my jeep with one of these it just seems perfect. Same displacement, cylinders, and orientation. This fucking guy: na fuck that om gonna take an iconoc JDM l6 and replace with an american engine. NOt only that its gonna be a straight six too. I love it
im glad this car exists
Ok so it's a Toyota with a Chevy 4200, Duramax turbo and running mustank wheels? I fucking love it lol
Not a Duramax, it's just an (Atlas) 4200 Vortec inline 6 the same engines you find in the Chevy Trailblazers.
@@tskraj3190 Duramax "TURBO", its in the description.........
@@JohnnyAnderson1 So you are using a "Turbo" from a Duramax?
@@tskraj3190 I’m not
@@tskraj3190 the OP is using a Duramax variable vain turbo on a 4200 L6 last i checked, yes. they respond very well to boost. over 500hp with 11 lbs.
If I was drunk and saw this thing ripp down the street I'd be like:
That's one mean ass Cobra
still has that turbo i6 supra sound haha
Technically its still a straight 6 supra much of the cars sound is due to the body

Title of video should be "Tuning the Vortec Supra on the busiest strech of road during rush hour."
I've always wanted to see something like this, Vortec 4200 are pretty good engines lol

Cade Stone what did the straight 5 come in?

Matthew Steinert I miss this series of engines so much. So reliable and sounded amazing.

Who knew those Vortec 4200s sound badass especially with a turbski!!!!!

@@cpufreak101 it’s a usdm spec Toyota Supra, not JDM.
Trans is ar5 from pontiac solstice
What bell housing you used to mate? Probably the stock solstice one huh
Bell is from a Hummer H3. Solstice is a different pattern
Nice video of cars going by
has this been dynoed yet. you have a build page or thread? im thinking about doing this in a 88 xr4ti if it fits. also what trans is it running?
hey man, do you have a build thread by chance?
Wow 🤔😳 impressive 👍👏
@Boydd916, build thread here: www.vortec4200.com/forum1/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=780
MICHIGAN-where guys put chevy motors into supras and supra motors into Ford's. ❤
Awesome video!
Back in the early 90’s I had an ‘87 identical to this car.
haha, it sounds like a supra, but inside it sounds like GM. I like it though 8)
My favorite Amera-barra swap. Is your turbo still vgt?
What kind of oil pan did you use for clearance? Last I knew, those motors might have a deep oil pan because they came from a truck.
Where is Michigan are you from? Nice car!
Nice were the mounts hard and do you have the r154 or go to a gm trans
How much HP and Torque? You used forged rods and Pistons? What gearbox you used? which blower are you using?
been reading bits and pieces about this car, I' very interested in a link to a build thread, or any other information you have , thanks
just drove it to work today. boost controller needs lotsa work still. is making 10 psi

Do you still have this car? or build thrread? Been wondering how about to do a swap a crazy as this in an s13 or anything really
American Barra?
This is great.
dude you gotta get externally dumped wastegate on that turbo.. i wanna HEAR WASTEGATE!

I’m glad my car isn’t this slow.
A mk3 supra with a gm vortec 4200 and mustang wheels thats a frankinstine car
how did you make that fit ?
What flywheel and clutch/pressure plate did you use
Supra with a i6 Chevy motor and mustang GT Wheels 💀💀💀
It was probably a body with no motor, trans or wheels.
That's my guess

An American inline 6, sounds rare. Heard the 4200 is the closest equivalent to the 2JZ and Ford Barra.
How much hp, torque, and mpg are you averaging?
Till this day not a single person knows to manual swap these motors, you need a custom flywheel
Simply not true at all. Emtech makes flywheels now. I have a manual behind mind

what ever happen to this car?
It's a supra with mustang wheels and a gm engine 😅
How does duramax turbo work on a 4200?
Not real well. I gave up on it going back to NA for a while
What transmission is used here
Probably an Aisin AR5. Which is basically an R154
