- IS THE CHEAP, JUNKYARD AMERI-BARRA BETTER WITH BOOST? CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO WHERE I FINALLY SUBJECT THE 2005 4200 ATLAS MOTOR TO SOME MUCH-NEEDED BOOST. CHECK OUT THE TRICK (CUSTOM RICHIE) TURBO KIT (ALL DONE FOR EASY OIL DRAIN). DID THE ATLAS FOLLOW THE HP/BOOST FORMULA (DOUBLE THE POWER AT 14.7 PSI)? AFTER ADDING LARGER INJECTORS, A GT45 TURBO, PROCHARGER ATW INTERCOOLER, IT WAS TIME FOR SOME BOOOOOOST!! THNX GOES TO MARC AT EMTECH MOTORSPORTS, THE BOYS AT MEGASQUIRT, JASON AT FTFAB77 AND CALVIN (NIVLAC57) FOR ALL THE HELP.

6k rpm and going up in hp. We need more cowbell
Must
Have
More
Cowbell !!!!
I can't hear it, needs MORE COWBELL!
I got a fever...
And the only cure...
IS MORE COWBELL!!!
Yeah, I've got a fever too only cure is.. more cowbell. Get er done Richard Holdener!
And probably a lot more valve Spring pressure in rate
Lime-swap offers tuning and harnesses for the 4200 and emtechmotorsports has bell housing adapters, flywheels and oil pans for 4200s if you're doing engine swaps. Just posting because it might help somebody
thnx
I greatly appreciate it literally solved half of my problems
@@justinlee2330 post a video when you get it going!
The oil drain through the fill cap might be the best thing you've done yet Richard!
ssssshh-don't tell the roadkill guys-they will copy it
@@richardholdener1727 ruclips.net/video/I0rHlHPz91o/видео.html This guy did it first a year ago.
Thought that was a no go thing to do? My impression is that the oil doesn't drain quickly enough from the head when you ad excess. Maybe another reason your plug holes were filling with oil. Obviously the seals are toast but I couldn't see that helping it.
I really hope this help fuel some aftermarket parts for this and it's smaller engines. Too bad it's YEARS after this motor came out and probably not gonna be a huge revenue stream.
Oh you would be surprised. There are alot of supras, is300s, other i6 are getting the atlas-m+Ar5 driveline swap because 2jzgte and v160s are too expensive to replace and when you do find one its all trashed.
I'm going this route later this year on my is300. Ill sell the 2jz to a fanboy and call it done. 😂😂😂📞📞
@@blaqlabspodcast5816 Atlas heads flow so well, the block and heads are so light vs cast iron so will be perfect for any streeter wanting more hp and tq at lower psi than any JZ can achieve so great choice. Im even thinking a great replacement for diesel 6 toyotas that are so overpriced junk. I have looked at the Toyota HZ engine which have 94mm bores while Atlas is 93mm bore and all the studs match up, oil and water can be matched with oil feed re-routed using fitting and a copper line and heads converted to Belt driven using a block off plate above the front cam caps, all doable. Then would need custom pistons, rods and ready for boost using shorter 100m forged diesel crank but 1mm larger bores can only be a good thing. That would cost the same as buying and rebuilding a thrashed Jz motor or rebuild price of a HZ stock motor but would Troll Toyota "JZ" fanboys to the grave with 4.2 "HZ" as these engines are boat anchors yet still fitted to latest Cruisers for last 30 years.
These vids are my excuse to stop people from complaining about my TB.
@@blaqlabspodcast5816I was thinking the same thing. I wanted to go with a JZ or 7M, but I didn't for the reasons you listed. Going this route bc a V8 doesn't fit well in a 190e.
Rick flair style now! "woo!!" 4200 gang
Over 500 hp on less than 10psi is wild, these engines are arguably better than an LS, and thats one of the older engines with smaller ports and valves, if it was an 06-09 head it would really shine
I love this series - such a nice change from the LS/LT
I like this test a lot because you started the dyno run at 2500 RPMs and it's impressive to see 350 horsepower at 2600 RPM
Like a pickup truck.
TQ*
I’d love to see a twin turbo setup like what was planned for the Trailblazer SS before they decided to drop a LS2 in it.
I wanted to do this swap on my current build but couldn't find any info on it and got intimidated.. sooo stoked for this
Keep it a surprise for everyone👀
Those of us that know, know. As one of your loyal subscribers and a friendly car guy, do it.
A lot of swap info is at nivlac57.
Loved the 4200 in my Envoy, torque from 2000 to 4500 was flat as a board. Shame GM never put it in full size half ton trucks.
It sure was flat.
I used the 3/4 reach br7ef in my turbo L83 silverado I built versus the $20 per plug iridium’s. I had zero issues running these plugs for several thousand miles yet there’s a lot of people who think they will cause havoc. Glad to see you test the change in the type/reach of plug. Keep up the great work!
Wow. Very impressive. They were great engines in stock form and looks like they are awesome when boosted. Great video!
Definitely worth watching And i'm looking forward to your next dyno run with the Ameri-Barra. It's good to know that with not much boost that you're getting great numbers.
Wow! Great work Richard! Just amazing what you've done with this underrated motor.
Hopefully this brings some aftermarket for the ol' 4200, the most iconic engines are inclines 2JZ the Barra the ol' Ford inline 6's Cummins etc it was absolutely foolish for nothing to have been done with these engines I really don't know why the big 3 isn't trying to bring back more inline 6 engines
They Tried in 2000s especially Chevrolet. They just work with Turbo 4s, V6 and V8s.
More difficult to package than a V6.
My guess would be packaging a in-line six is longer than a V8 and considerably longer than V6
It's so strong.
It's harder to maintain accuracy over distance so if you have a in line 6 the stack up on the tolerances starts to become a real problem. . It's just quite a bit cheaper to make v engines.
Thank you for sharing and teaching us there Master-Chief, much appreciated. 🙏
I gotta say, I'm soooo excited to see where this goes !!!
I hoping for over 1k, there's no reason it shouldn't that i can see, especially since it's been done MANY times with 2jz and other I6 engines.
Iv been wanting a "trailvoy" for several years and this makes me want to just go buy one lol. Definitely can't wait to see more on this one 💪
One of the best series yet.
Oh man oh man oh man! I love this engine! Now i want one even more!
Up the top of the final run looks like valve float to me.
Aussie Barra does the same thing,
Replace the valve springs, close up the plug gaps to 0.022"and get a bit more timing in the bottom so it comes on stronger.
It is looking like a great engine.
Good job.
Holy boost confidence Richard!!! Your a madman. lol stay safe big brother!!!
I'd love to see what that thing could do with forged rods & 9:1 pistons, some heavy duty ARP studs, and upgraded valve springs!
Through in an Atomic timing chain kit with crank sprocket and oil pump gears, the engine will pull 800hp no worries
Nivlac57 Atlas motor renowned
On corn... 10:1+
This is shaping up to be an awesome series!
Loving these other guys videos
Gosh dang, to hell with modding the, gto the trailblazer bout to get a turbo setup! I'm dying over here lol!
This series has been every bit as good as I had hoped.
Glad to hear that you're going to put some ring gap in it. That was the one thing I was wondering during most of the video. Kinda makes me want to buy a Trail Blazer and see if i can shoe-horn a turbo in there somewhere.
take out the wiper fluid tank and there is tone of space there i currently drive a 02 blazer
Very entertaining and fun to look at! 👍
Will you test it with twin scroll? Since its a six cyl that should be wise!? Maybe the stock manifold pointing up and a two pipe adapter!?
Another suggestion: hook up EGT on all six exhaust pipes and tune the engine cylinder compensated!? I have seen impressive hp gain even on moderate boost! 💪👌
I think this engine needs it's own name and not compared to anything else because I think it set the engine back from companies getting on board to make aftermarket parts for it . Yes I think it's a great engine and there's a few guys out there putting in the work and they have come so far and finally getting notice so I don't think it will be much longer we will see great things from this engine because it's already happening. Good luck guy's
I thought for sure we were going to see a vacuum hose malfunction...
Well Richard I thought I knew what I wanted to put in my 1950 Chevy. Now I need to get a 4200. Lol
Seeing an “Other Guys” episode on the toyota 5vz-fe engine would be awesome
15 years ago, GM had a concept trailblazer that they build with a Holset they pulled off a Dodge/Cummins. I don't recall if it was a HX/HY35 series or the HE351. I suspect the latter. Was a fun ride and would break all 4 wheels loose if you brake boosted it.
I love this! Thanks Richard!
Very cool. I'm thinkingt he reason the NA version didn't respond to the headers is because the cams are so tiny there isn't much wave interference. My dad had an Envoy with this engine and it was an impressively good truck motor
Inline six engines have such flat torque curves. Why (besides packaging) did we stop using these again? They are the perfect truck motor. Torquey for thier displacement, simple, naturally balanced, one head so less gaskets to fail. I think we are really forgetting a hidden gem.
Can’t wait to see more of this setup!
The Stude went 9.99@132.9 with a 2004 engine, unopened longblock, 06 intake cam, valve spring, fabricated intake and exhaust, 19 psi boost.
The Fairmont went 9.98@134+ with a 2008 engine, boneyard stock, stock intake, factory exhaust manifold, 14 psi boost, 59MM turbo, shifting at 5300, launch with 3 psi, third pass on car.
Both have a lot left in them. The current tune ups are very conservative.
Just to clarify, Calvins studebaker had an 04 engine, 2006 intake cam and valvesprings?
@@TheeAbstractHero yes
11.2% more power running E85 vs a perfectly running gasoline setup...very nice! Hassle of visiting the gas station 33% more often is worth the gains.
My 2007 trailblazer is running this little beast and I love it.
Bad ass little motor and there are a ton of them in the junkyards
I’m liking this test a lot!!
👍🏼👍🏼
Really looking forward to more videos of the 4200
Had that engine in 2005 GMC Envoy, loved the power it produced back then even with that Heavy SUV. It would be interesting to drop one in a 1st gen Camaro or Nova.
The deck height on these is so tall that it won't clear most passenger cars without a huge cowl, but it's been done. There's some videos of a Gen 1 Nova wagon here on RUclips running a turbo 4200.
Excellent series bro 👍
I would like to see you put a velocity stack on the inlet of the turbo and see what that's worth. You should see more HP and boost as I have seen happen in a magazine test. Love what you do .
I'VE DONE THAT ON CENTRIFUGAL BLOWERS
This is cool. Would love to see these in older trucks. I mean LS motors are so common and sound good but there is something about a i6
Yep. It would be cool to see an old C10 this and a good O/D auto.
10 years ago I was wanting to do this swap into my 68 camaro, it was a 6 cylinder car to begin with, would have been worth it for sure! Went with a 377 sbc solid roller instead, now it’s an odd combo with all the ls stuff
You are The Conductor. Always on top of those train tracks son.
Crazy power at lower rpms. Very nice
It is nice to see more than the same old engines being tested. Keep up the great content! A personal request for a junk yard motor to test would be a GM 3900 60* v6 as I plan to put one of these junkyard gems in my Fiero which has the old 2.8 version of this motor in it.
Just put a LS in it, will be cheaper and more powerful.
@@Dayandcounting I don't want an LS which is why I like seeing these other guys videos. Would also not be cheaper not even close.
@Yeah Right This is the perfect time to enter the car scene, simply because it's full of sheep.
You should check what changing the valve timing does with the turbo. Might have some interesting interactions
Thanks Richard! your a legend
Dude your awesome 😎 thank you so much please put ring gap in and give her the beans. This is the motor I wanted to see the most out of these a t5 would be awesome but this is plenty amazing. Thanks
Screw them Motor Trend dudes.. Richard gives all the sauce away for the FREE 99!!!!
Thanks Richard 👍
The 4.2 Twin Turbo was the original motor for the SS Trailblazer
This is really cool! But with every engine I see pushed and tweaked. I'm Very curious about what parts would break first when taken to its limit!
it would be very interesting to see a compound turbo setup on it
GM needs to revisit this design and develop a direct injected version of this, basically a turbo 4.2L inline 6 cylinder DOHC with direct injection similar to the ecotec3 engines. It would be awesome with a 10 speed automatic and optional 7 speed manual transmission in the silverado 1500HD and 2500.
impressive numbers!
What a fun project!
Richard, I like this format and the fact you are showing the Aussies we can build a great six also..Keep at it, nitrous plus boost...What will the engine tale?
I wonder if you're getting into valve float. Also you could probably run the water thru the intercooler first and then thru the motor.
This would make a good engine for a budget C10. As much as I like the LS swap, they are kinda over done.
Good Stuff! Richard, would a dump tube help the audio? My favorite part is always the end of the run at high RPM, which gets blasted on on the mic.
I love this!
Awesome! Better than expected!!#
Yay! Boost! 🙌
Ok, so off the top of my head I've thought of a few cars I'd love to see this swap go into...any early square body S-10, the mid 80s AMC Eagle in a 2WD configuration (unless the 4WD can be adapted to work), a Chevy Luv, or a Chevy Monza or Vega.
Richard! Let's get a fallow up video in this awesome engine!
I could watch this all day over the LS stuff.
E85 also has a cooling effect similar to water meth and adds more power at the cost of burning it faster
Keep it going and no one gets hurt. 👊😎👍
Man this in my boat would be a riot! Wish I could fab one up!
I’ll save you guys some time. 555hp 578lbs of torque on 11.3lbs of boost.

The name "barra" was a code name for both the 5.4l v8 and the 4l inline 6 for the "BA" series falcon. The turbo 6 was actually code named "GUL" as in seagull because it would shit all over everything 😂 facts from a ex Australian ford mechanic 👍
Nice torque curve. I'd really like to see a turbo on a 2.4 ecotec. Not a popular engine nowadays but if built like jasper engines does, with good piston/ring setup, a boost in low rpm torque for these would help my '15 equinox get out of it's own way!
Carl brunet runs an Ecotec well over 2000hp in a factory block
I want this in my Rambler.
I hope you have Fasterproms do the porting on the head! Jeremy is excited to be a part of the research!! I'm sure George is excited too, but I don't know if the world is ready for Richard and George in the same room. Lol.
should be fun
Would expect to see a spark issue show up at peak torque. Fascinating project, here's to 750 bhp🙂
Off topic here but need info. How difficult would it be to swap out a 5.3 for a 6.0/6.2 in my van? I know in earlier years, it was no problem...🤔
The missfire is from shorting out spark from the oil seeping around the coil pack boots.
What an incredible engine. This belongs in a full size truck!
I found three of these at the yard today. Have you gotten the cams yet? What do you expect to get from this hp level?
Love this engine wanna swap one some day
Great video
You and Calvin have me really wanting to find a vehicle to drop an Atlas motor in, if I can find a low buck 5 cylinder I think I can fit it in a Toyota pickup.
????? What the point
Very impressive!

Wouldn't mind chipping in to help Richard get some better video and audio equipment. This channel is too good for 720p only and blown out mics. Anyone else with me? How about it Richard? Couple hundred of us chipping in $10-$20 each could really improve your equipment.
what components should i look at? mic is an easy fix-just have it in the console room-I also have a 70D that I did a lot of filming with but the phone is so much quicker
@@richardholdener1727 TBH Richard its been awhile since I did any serious media production, so I'm out of date. I know a lot of better media outlets are shooting video with digital SLR replacements these days. Sound wise you might start looking at good mics for high dB recording, which would probably mean some good mic covers along with some pads on the inputs. Before the pandemic we used to a lot of recording sessions on the dyno for Microsoft, EA, Activision, etc. for big automotive video game sound effects and those guys had to tailor their mic setups to the high output nature of loud exhausts. If you're recording from outside the dyno cell, you could also look at using contact mics on the windows
I'd be down.
Right on
You should do a 4.2 vs 5.3 video. Cam, turbo , E85 ect or just do a cam 4.2 with using Schneider Racing Cams, for us 4.2 lovers
Can't wait for more cam and a ported head. I'm curious if you'll pass 700hp with that and 12psi
FasterProms guys are porting a head for this size of engine, for someone up in the NE.
I honestly think if they had Better crankcase venting and much stronger valve Springs And ring gap would have been able to make over a 1000 on it.
