Running a model locomotive in front of its real-world equivalent is an amazing flex. Also, greetings from the US. Discovered the series through Gofod Tynn, looking for ideas for an S-scale layout I could drive micro-scale RC cars around in. It's been a treat.

When all said and done, Pitley is a fantastic layout and surely entertained thousands, not just on the exhibition floor but with you taking us along with you on your model railway journey from conception to exhibition. It looks like a fab railway and a great exhibition, and I'm only sorry I missed it. Looking forward to the final conclusion of this wonderful series, and seeing what you have in store for us for the coming year. This is going to sound absolutely terrible, but it gives confidence when even the professionals have to deal with gremlins on their own darlings, and that the best laid plans never survive contact with the "enemy"! A group I'm part of will be exhibiting at Ally Pally in March, and as a first time operations manager I'm bricking it as the zero hour creeps closer. Perhaps we'll see you there? I’ve always thought it would fun fun to exhibit a layout (though mine needs some serious work done to it before it would be possible for me to do so 😂)! I wish I could have come to see your layout, but seeing as I’m based on the other side of the world, that was unfortunately something I’d never be able to do (most likely). The amazing thing is though with RUclips and other sites on the internet, modellers from all of the world can share their fantastic layouts with each other! Although I’ve never seen your layout in person, and due to my location I most likely won’t ever be able to, I know what nearly your entire layout looks like since you videos are so well documented and show every step to making your layout! It was great to finally meet you and see Pitley in the flesh, very weird to see myself and the other half in a video 😂 This weekend was just before I went in for severe eye surgery so it meant a lot to be able to see it. Seeing it all so close it inspired me to make alterations to the coffee table layout I'm building at the moment. Then to catch up with you briefly at the end of the Steam Gala was fantastic. Carry on creating such brilliant content for all of us hobbyists and can't wait to catch you again!

Thanks! Yeah the prior prep beforehand really helped things go smoothly - even when we did have problems we already knew how to solve them and keep trains running in the meantime. As for interacting with the public, it's the same as being friendly on RUclips too. Even for those who had no idea who I was it's still important to represent the layout and the hobby in a positive light. I'm always happy to answer questions and talk about the layout whether online or in person. It's much better than having the operators sit stonewalled behind the backscenes refusing to make eye contact. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy to true. Well a massive well done. On the layout and on the show. I was just as impressed with the way the modules were stacked and lifted. Worked really well. Btw. I have had a big issue on my build with cutting out and I found it seemed to be due to my track not being level front to back. Not sure whether you covered that in any videos but on Amazon picked up some small level cubes and they are awesome for checking the track. Worth having in the kit bag. Now I gotta go use it all around the shelf layout as I glue down.
Looked like an excellent exhibition. After helping out run someone's layout I now know how fun, tiring and at points frustrating a exhibition can be. But overall it is fun. For all those saying that the hobby is dying, note the pretty huge crowds of public at this exhibition and some were mostly families with children.
Yeah it's was a full on weekend and although it sounds silly, it's really hard work keeping something moving at all times while also interacting with the public. I definitely agree with that! This was our busiest exhibition at the railway to date (I was worried about overcrowding at one point!) and the amount of families we had stop by who mentioned they were working on their own layout was truly fantastic to hear. @ThatModelRailwayGuy the N gauge Dawlish Warren layout I helped out with last year do exactly that. If you keep trains moving you get more interest. Also, having an interesting train helps, long freight trains and trains carrying interesting loads like cars, tractors or other vehicles helps, as it gives added interest to kids and some adults as well.
Loved this latest video and seeing the reaction to it at the Spa Valley. I didn’t realise (perhaps naively!) there was such a time difference between the video and the exhibition - I’ll keep a closer eye on that in future and pay a visit!
Yeah generally I film an entire series worth of videos, edit them afterwards and then release. This way they can come out fairly regularly as previously people would complain that there could be a gap of a couple of months between episodes if I was busy. In this instance the layout was mostly completed over the Summer (I was averaging a module a week generally) in order to get it finished for the exhibition. After the show I then set to work editing with the first episode of this series coming out November. Thanks for watching 😃

Great video, and you're right about Model Railway Scenes they have some great 3D printed items. We have lot's of them on Dylington, and no doubt we'll be adding more in the future and to my grandson's 009 layout when he builds it.....cheers James 🙂👍

I’ve been following you and your videos since your early tutorials and the inception of Pitley. It’s great to finally see the layout officially complete (Are layouts ever complete though? 😜) and on display at Spa Valley, and glad it went well! Your video tutorials hopefully have brought in more people taking up the hobby who are inspired by a younger face showing them the ropes! Cheers, all the best from Downunder!

Quite a convincing railway, nice. About your mirrored backscene (forested views at least) why not "plant" some full size trees in front of and to one side. That ought to trick the eye!! 😊
The problem is that, with a modular model railway, those points on the backscene don't always fall in the same place depending on how the sections are setup so you'd need a different tree position for every possible configuration. Thanks for watching 😃

It was interesting to see it in exhibition mode as of course it was the ‘other way round’ 😊 It seems like only yesterday when you cut the end plates, started the modules, and explained the rationale of what you wanted to do. Yes it was great to have the station modules facing outwards for once and simply being about to step back away from the layout and take it all in was a new experience too - one that's not usually possible given the size of the room it normally resides in. Great to see it up and running! On your backscenes - how did you fix them to the foam board on the curves without them all creasing up? I’m having a nightmare with mine on the curved sections. Congratulations on the whole project!
Hi there, I added the backscenes with the foamex laid flat. It was still a bit tricky to get rid of all the air bubbles but the curves of the layout are generally quite wide so creasing wasn't too much of an issue. If it makes any difference, these are also the PVC adhesive backscenes rather than the paper ones - we needed the extra durability. Thanks for watching 😃
Hiya, do you mean the static grass applicator? If so it's a semi-commercial one - they're sold on Ebay. If you check back through some of the previous videos in the series where I was adding the grass to the layout it's usually listed in the description with a link to the product page. If you mean the static grass itself that's all from WWS, again specific lengths/colours are usually listed in the description or videos where the grass was added to the layout. Hi, just discovered you on youtube, very good video. Building myself an N-modules for exhibition, like what you said about activity at the facility, I want to build a public-friendly train facility like you. You use the Z21, have acquired it, and would like the public to be able to drive trains with their own mobile phone. Maybe I want to contact you if there is something I can't do, or understand with the app and setting up the Z21, can I contact you? What I work on the most are electrical/data connections between the modules, to get it as solid as possible, I have bought several different multi-connectors on Ebay which will be tried out this spring. Again, very inspiring video.

Who said anything about relying on the joiners to conduct power? Yes I have droppers to every section of track, it was one of those that failed and I made a temporary fix by soldering a piece of wire across an isolated fishplate to restore power rather than dig up all the ballast as the show was opening. Yes the lengths of wood on the baseboard tops at each end of the module were there to support my endplates, which in turn interface with all the other modules on the layout.

I have had a big issue on my build with cutting out and I found it seemed to be due to my track not being level front to back. Not sure whether you covered that in any videos but on Amazon picked up some small level cubes and they are awesome for checking the track. Worth having in the kit bag. Now I gotta go use it all around the shelf layout as I glue down.

Looked like an excellent exhibition. After helping out run someone's layout I now know how fun, tiring and at points frustrating a exhibition can be. But overall it is fun.
For all those saying that the hobby is dying, note the pretty huge crowds of public at this exhibition and some were mostly families with children.
Yeah it's was a full on weekend and although it sounds silly, it's really hard work keeping something moving at all times while also interacting with the public.
I definitely agree with that! This was our busiest exhibition at the railway to date (I was worried about overcrowding at one point!) and the amount of families we had stop by who mentioned they were working on their own layout was truly fantastic to hear. Thanks for watching 😃
@ThatModelRailwayGuy the N gauge Dawlish Warren layout I helped out with last year do exactly that. If you keep trains moving you get more interest. Also, having an interesting train helps, long freight trains and trains carrying interesting loads like cars, tractors or other vehicles helps, as it gives added interest to kids and some adults as well.
Loved this latest video and seeing the reaction to it at the Spa Valley. I didn’t realise (perhaps naively!) there was such a time difference between the video and the exhibition - I’ll keep a closer eye on that in future and pay a visit!
Yeah generally I film an entire series worth of videos, edit them afterwards and then release. This way they can come out fairly regularly as previously people would complain that there could be a gap of a couple of months between episodes if I was busy.
In this instance the layout was mostly completed over the Summer (I was averaging a module a week generally) in order to get it finished for the exhibition. After the show I then set to work editing with the first episode of this series coming out November. Thanks for watching 😃

Great video, and you're right about Model Railway Scenes they have some great 3D printed items. We have lot's of them on Dylington, and no doubt we'll be adding more in the future and to my grandson's 009 layout when he builds it.....cheers James 🙂👍

I’ve been following you and your videos since your early tutorials and the inception of Pitley. It’s great to finally see the layout officially complete (Are layouts ever complete though? 😜) and on display at Spa Valley, and glad it went well!
Your video tutorials hopefully have brought in more people taking up the hobby who are inspired by a younger face showing them the ropes!

Quite a convincing railway, nice. About your mirrored backscene (forested views at least) why not "plant" some full size trees in front of and to one side. That ought to trick the eye!! 😊
The problem is that, with a modular model railway, those points on the backscene don't always fall in the same place depending on how the sections are setup so you'd need a different tree position for every possible configuration. Thanks for watching 😃

It was interesting to see it in exhibition mode as of course it was the ‘other way round’ 😊 It seems like only yesterday when you cut the end plates, started the modules, and explained the rationale of what you wanted to do. Yes it was great to have the station modules facing outwards for once and simply being about to step back away from the layout and take it all in was a new experience too - one that's not usually possible given the size of the room it normally resides in. Hi. I am pleased to see the first exhibition your layout went to was a success and it model railway celebrity ceil of approval too. You have a couple of figures on your layout in engine shed area one with the guys hard hat being be held with his arms folded. I am just wondering where you sourced them from? Thanks Tim.

Great to see it up and running! On your backscenes - how did you fix them to the foam board on the curves without them all creasing up? I’m having a nightmare with mine on the curved sections. Congratulations on the whole project!
Hi there, I added the backscenes with the foamex laid flat. It was still a bit tricky to get rid of all the air bubbles but the curves of the layout are generally quite wide so creasing wasn't too much of an issue. If it makes any difference, these are also the PVC adhesive backscenes rather than the paper ones - we needed the extra durability. Thanks for watching 😃
Great videos! Is the static grass a commercial one or homemade. If it's homemade how about a video on making one!
Hiya, do you mean the static grass applicator? If so it's a semi-commercial one - they're sold on Ebay. If you check back through some of the previous videos in the series where I was adding the grass to the layout it's usually listed in the description with a link to the product page.
If you mean the static grass itself that's all from WWS, again specific lengths/colours are usually listed in the description or videos where the grass was added to the layout. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

Hi, just discovered you on youtube, very good video. Building myself an N-modules for exhibition, like what you said about activity at the facility, I want to build a public-friendly train facility like you. You use the Z21, have acquired it, and would like the public to be able to drive trains with their own mobile phone. Maybe I want to contact you if there is something I can't do, or understand with the app and setting up the Z21, can I contact you? What I work on the most are electrical/data connections between the modules, to get it as solid as possible, I have bought several different multi-connectors on Ebay which will be tried out this spring. Again, very inspiring video.

Schoolboy error relying on rail joins to conduct power across section breaks. Surely you had droppers to each (or most) track pieces?
Who said anything about relying on the joiners to conduct power? Yes I have droppers to every section of track, it was one of those that failed and I made a temporary fix by soldering a piece of wire across an isolated fishplate to restore power rather than dig up all the ballast as the show was opening. Was the extra wood you added the section that attached to the main baseboard?
Yes the lengths of wood on the baseboard tops at each end of the module were there to support my endplates, which in turn interface with all the other modules on the layout.
Tried to become a member, but I'm in the apartment in Fortaleza in Brazil, here the tax office is asking for information about why I want to send money out of Brazil. I'll be back in Norway in 4 weeks, can register to become a member then, it will be easier.

Haha, I think it was probably an accident since he was standing closer to the layout than usual to be able to hear me over the real steam engine behind us.
We had a lot worse over the weekend - most notably one guy who asked how the bushes were stuck down as he tried to pull them up! Thanks for watching 😃
