I've got an '89 and I really don't mind the bumpers. Mine is cream colored and I've never had so many people stop and want to talk about my car. FYI, Palm Springs is the place to shop for old MBs. rich snow birds abound. I bought mine in 2016 with 112k for $10,500.......Nyaaaaaaah! It brings the child out in me...
I have a 1988 MB 560SL. It starts right off the bat, put it in drive and away it goes no hesitation. I drove it from Palm Springs to Las Vegas and back, great driving auto, solid as a rock. Actually averaged 18 mpg on that trip. I was told that Mercedes always under rated the horsepower, this car acts like it has a 260 horsepower engine, very powerful. Also have a 1963 MB 230SL, completely different automobile. Thanks for the video, very entertaining, well done.
Didn't know that, thanks. I had my checked and it was only firing on 7 cylinders, one of the injectors needed replacing, the engine is running very smoothly now.
I actually had a 280SL Pagoda from "Hot Wheels" toys in Petrolblau. I think it is lost somewhere in my house still! I hope I can find it. I have a few of them in my current metal die-cast model collection.
Nick you are welcome to come drive our 1984 280SL European Spec located in New jersey. It has the euro plaid interior! Lovely driving experience with the 6 cylinder. A bit lighter in the front end. We also have a Euro 500SL. Thanks for the video, great quality.
That’s an awesome ride. My mother just gave me her mother’s my grandmothers 1980 English red Mercedes-Benz 450SL with ONLY 48,000 miles on it 🥰 long story short, Grandma and my mother both had multiple cars at the time so the Mercedes-Benz sat in the garage. Totally in love with my 1980’s Benz. It is currently still in my garage and out of the elements. One day I would like to pass it down to the next generation. TYGod in Heaven🙏🏻 #BlessedLife
What really astonishes me is how many people actually share your opinion. No offence meant, but I always loathed the American bumbers and headlights. The original Euro version is a piece of beauty and elegance, its lines are totally ruined for me by the bumpers. The third breake light does the rest to kill ist.
@@Kref3I sort of agree...I don't loathe them as you put it, but in THIS day and age...the big bumpers are a good defense. So many people are distracted when they are on the road today. Not fond of the brake light either, but again, it serves a purpose now especially if your SL is a dark color.
BTW, I have a 360 SL in a teal green spectacular color. I literally never drive it without somebody commented each and every time it goes out the door because of its classic beauty.
Hi Nick Can I suggest you find a friendly owner of a fully optioned (suspension) R129 (the next edition of the SL),. I think you will find a much more engaging SL. Not to say the R107 isn't gorgeous. Ask if you can add a couple of extra pounds pressure to the tyres and drive with you selecting the gears via the T Bar (ie: hold it down a little longer). Ok it's not an BMW M5, but it's. Lot of fun if you provoke it sensibly. Remembering the R129 was designed in the mid 1980's waiting for the R107 sales to drop away. That's for seeking out sharing and explaining.
I am OK with the R129, in fact, I looked at one. Black with black interior. I read about the power and decided I didn't need all of that. I also know about the nightmares of the hydraulics and the folding hard top. No thanks to being on a road trip, and the top getting stuck, or fluid running down my back or into my lap. I am capable of folding a soft top "by hand"
I love this boxy design. Unfortunately I did not witnessed that design-era, but it seems like the military had a lot of cool-looking vehicles. The design of the Volkswagen Iltis, Merceds-Benz Wolf or Porsche 597 are pretty sharp.
Hi . The first year of these W107 model cars was 1970. Mercedes made total of 8 cars in 1970. First real commercial year was 1971. First 1971 model was 350 SL and it had 3,5 liter engine ( I know I have one with manual gears) in euro model car. Export to US started at 1972 and then model 350 SL had a 4,5 liter engine. I don´t know if they exported manual shift cars to US at all.
I remember my neighbor having this car a white color in the 80s. His son who was a few years older than me brought the key out to impressed us and the key got stuck in the car when he was attempting to start it. Boy! The beating he got was worst than being in a Nazi concentration camp. This was in Nigeria. My parent drove Peugeot 505, so I stayed clear of the Mercedes because no one had to tell me that it was way more expensive. Good Mr Nick stay safe God bless and Cool Runnings
In Sweden the model is often referred to as the "Dallas-moppe". Bobby Ewing used to have one in the tv-series from the 80s. A red one."Moppe" is slang for Moped which is a lightweight motorcycle used by kids.
A beautiful car, my uncle has a 280 SL from 1983. You don't know anyone with a Jensen Interceptor from the 70's do you? Would love to see you review one of those!
Apparently every time you want to do a car review you just need to dig around in Peters garage. Love those old Mercs. Would love to see a vid on the 2016 C63 S. I just got one but would love to get your take.
Definitely review a Fiat Abarth! You won't be sorry you did. I bought one after test driving one and they're absolutely fun and quirky. Also, I absolutely loved the Mercedes in this video.
Nick, where do you get the awesome soundtracks for your videos? is it royalty free? Keep up the good work, love the variety of cars and the great humor!
This car is not mid engined, it mid passanger/driver car. You pretty much sit smack in the middle, its roughly as long in the back as it is in the front from the point where you sit. :) Love these old Mercs. My fav is the W123's wich has the same design language as this pretty much. I drove one once, 240D with turbo and intercooler, and a 5 speed manual, it was nice, but only drove it a very short distance on a beach. :P That thing had some get up and go, originally it was slow as a dog, but with the added aftermarket turbo and intercooler it had a top speed of 220 - 240 km/h or so, it was nuts. That turbo did a ton for that otherwise weak engine. Drove it down to Germany and it got up to scary speeds on the autobahn, it was a 1983 model, W123. And just to be clear, I know you never said mid engined lol I was just making fun of the fact that you sit smack in the middle! :P
The SL was designed from the outset for US-specs, I prefer the US version, the lights look better than the glassy look of the Euro version, the bumpers really suit it All 560’s had an LSD
Mercs of this era had a tank-like feel to them. I used to own an '88 420 SEL, which was a weapon. In the end, the car was killed during an earthquake, otherwise I have no doubt it'd still be on the road.
Yeh I had an 88 300se & then imported a Toyota Soarer on factory air suspension (Lexus SC400 to the north hemisphere) but unfortunately had none of that tankish Benz solidity when doing long distance commutes. That era of Mercs were waaaay over engineered - they're stunning machines!
Only seen a handful of Toyota Soarers in this part of the world, very well spec'd vehicle. I shifted over to a Volvo-Ford brainchild (XR5 Mondeo), slightly more practical for day-to-day running, but built nothing like the Merc was.
Nice to see one of your older vids Nick.. I personally hate these 107 series cars. Having owned one myself I think they are hugely overrated.. but it is an experience to drive one!
These are what we call the US safety bumper.. it must be able to withstand a 8km direct accident.. without causing any damage to the car..if you check carefully the bumper actually still have absorber.. car's in most asia countries without such regulation.. when involved in an minor impact, the damages would be nusty..
Yes, I am OK with them, the Euro is the original look. They serve a good purpose. The key is to keep them well-maintained. If they are neglected, they get pitted and ashy and bring down the rest of the car.
Greetings Nick. Big fan here. I was wondering if I could ask for a review for the car buying "mortals" like me... Could you do a review of the Miata MX-5? The new Miata RF is coming out next year so I'm thinking about it... Many thanks in advance!
"Typical for the upholstery to be really good after many years"....not from what I've seen of the 560SLs. They're usually cracked all apart like their dashboards.
+Sawier Actually I am not a fancy watch guy. My watch is Tissot T Touch Expert which is not very expensive at all. I like it because it has a barometric pressure sensor I can use to double check settings in aircraft when I am being a pilot.
+Mr. E Not expensive by watch standards - Tissot are Swatch groups middle tier watches. Take a look at what something from the top tier like an Omega will set you back.
+Matthew Sharpe Yes sir, compared to a lot of the Swiss brands your Tissot isn't too bad. Good watch at a good price. I finally bought a first generation Omega Planet Ocean and was able to get it from an authorized dealer at a huge discount, but it was still a little over three grand. The new ones that just came out are twice as expensive! Heck, I'm about to buy a 1990 560SEC that will cost a bit less than any of the newer Planet Oceans. Crazy.
Watching you intentionally constantly bounce up and down in the drivers seat I was thinking you will loosen or damage the seat or the springs on such an old car.
Man... The 80's were TERRIBLE for cars... At least for us yanks lol. The Europeans really hit their stride then though. Fantastic video and amazing ride! I have a 79 300SD that I adore. Thanks for the vid :-)
Lovely car. As has been said the bumpers ruin it. I imported a US car to the UK, and they are unsaleable here without the Euro bumpers. It actually has less power than the European 5.0. Very well built. The driving position is actually rubbish - knuckles graze the steering wheel which is offset, the seat doesn't go back far enough if you are anything over 5 foot 11, and the head room is rubbish with the roof up. Owning one has not left me wanting to keep one or get another!

Just got a 380sl n i love it.... ppl are amazed that im 29 with this car
This was one of my dream car as a kid. A timeless classic that will never be forgotten.
At six years old i fell in love with the 560 SL and at 33 I still love it to this day
I fell in love with in the early 80s.
This is special for me. It was my favourite toy car in my collection as a small child. Always loved these.

Back when Mercedes had beautiful cars.
Feel the same! Not anymore
Mario Torrez Quant why not now. They look great. BMW used to be so nice but now they are becoming to similar... all the models
I like the new cars too.
Back when Mercedes built good quality cars. Now they are pure junk.

+1 on the bumpers!
Not just bumbers, the headlights are also US spec.
I think the euro bumpers look better, but the big rubber grows on me. I prefer the two round lights.
...but if someone slides into the back of you, the word "disgusting" quickly turns into "thank God".

Stalling the car was a fun moment, but I don't get it why it happened. What needs to be done in order not to happen ?

Sport, light
wonder what Peter did/does for a living?
Can someone remind me the name of that classic tune in the background?

He's not entirely correct. The 450SL was produced in the US from 1972-1980 and the 560SL from 1986-1989
I have a 73 450SL that has a rolloff date of 72 and a 76 with a rolloff date of 75. Also a 87 560 I just purchased in NC last week. All US cars
NICE ONE
