I had one. It also gets 12 miles per gallon and takes premium. How they only got 200 hp out of a 5.6L V8 is one of life's miracles.
because of the low compression . due to taxation reasons, in Europe it would be roughly 400 HP , but the torque matters not the engine performance
The same engine in europe made ~300hp which is quite reasonable for a 2 valve 5.6 L. US models were much worse because of emmisions regulations
Therefore, it must be very detuned and therefore, presumably, highly reliable and durable. Nevertheless, I think 5.6L should have more like 300hp, at least. 400 would be better!
@@gabormolnar1785 Isn’t torque a key aspect of engine performance?
“Taking away all the challenges of your drive,” to me, is what makes driving BORING. That’s why I WANT a MT, as well as power, good handling etc. Making it easier, by making everything automatic, is of little interest to me.
Very cool classic from when MB really meant in-depth quality and not just bling! 😃👍👍
Oh Tedward, your ‘80’s dream garage is my ‘80’s dream garage. You’re an automotive hero!
“Enjoyable” absolutely. Love mine! Im 63 and have transitioned from American muscle car classics to this iconic, gorgeous daily driver. All original, built so well and exudes high quality designed to last. The peak of German engineering when that phrase really meant something. Decent performance. But doesn’t have to be on par with a modern sports car. Smooth as silk! Puts a big smile on my face every time and feels like a special event driving it.
The universal truth: when you're rollin' in the SL, life is good
People can look, people can ignore, but you're still driving in a modern classic, who cares what they think 😛
Excellent. Just started enjoying a little afternoon cake and then there is a new Tedward classic car video! And even such an amazing car!
Cocaïne?
"Pretty sure we're using a lot of fuel, no matter what" 😂 Yeah, that's exactly it.
But gawd she cruises like an absolute dream. Thanks for taking a real icon for a spin.
Hey, I want my car to "have a sense of impending torque" what a great car to feature that old but still a daily driver. A unique experience with this car. Love the dash and the loose steering.
I have one, 86 Beautiful wht/palomino. Got it used in college and drove it daily to Worcester from Waltham. Also drove to the reservoir to use the BSC gym everyday. Now live in WPB, FL and the car moved down with me, still gets more looks than any RR or Bentley. Thanx for the review.
I have an 86 560SL and absolutely agree with everything said in this video. It really doesn’t drive like a 35 year old car at all. They are still pretty quick by todays standards and sound really good. People are shocked when I drive them and I punch it, for something so old they don’t expect it to have half the punch it has. When you’re just wafting along the drivetrain is silent, but once you punch it the whole thing opens up and sounds sweet. The transmission is also really impressive for a 35 year old 4 speed auto. It’s smooth and refined, but when u punch it, the trans kicks down quickly and shifts are pretty quick and feel aggressive. And yeah it isn’t a track car, but it’s an impressive handler still. The LSD also adds to the enjoyment.
It isn’t my daily driver but I drive it a good amount, people can’t help but look at it and I don’t blame them! I’ve had people come up to me and tell me how this was their dream car in the 80s or how it was a “movie star” in whatever popular show they were watching. I enjoy talking to people about it, it brings me so much joy.
It’s also pretty reliable. Like I said, I drive it a good amount and every now and then I do drive it hard. It really doesn’t put a foot wrong, it’s honestly more reliable than some new modern cars. The headlights tho do suck 😂. Imo this car is totally cool today, and will only get cooler over time. I absolutely love driving it up and down the Californian coast with the top down. It’s almost scary how you never feel the speed in this car. You’ll be cruising along the highway thinking you’re doing 70 mph, but when you look down you’ll see it showing 90. The speed in it is effortless.
Great video Tedward. It really brought a smile to my face to see you feature it and echo my exact feelings about the car!
I can't even imagine how many times people hit their heads on the grill while working on the car
I'm not entirely sure if it applies for the R107 but most Mercedes of this era have a feature that allows you to lift the hood into a vertical position. The W124 and the W201 have this for example.
@@planej6315 My w203 has this too.
I can tell from experience. You hit your head a lot on that grill.
when you lift the hood all the way to its second position, it is actually beyond vertical, you have complete access to the engine bay.
@@planej6315 my 126 has it too
One of the pleasures of those MB-cars with real technique, was the automatic. It had personality. If you pushed it, it shifted harder. Normally it shifted soft, but with a subtle, mechanical retention, that felt so good and well-engineered. I enjoyed it every day in my W123 230E.
Todays 7-10-11 level electronic shifters has no personality or finesse at all.
I swear the look of this car SCREAMS big time Hollywood producer/actor
Now THIS is a car I'd want! The cool thing about owning a benz is that you could get in another benz and feel right at home in it. You'll know how everything works and where everything is in the car. There are so many things in this car that are exactly like my W202 C Class.
hell, it even has a similar feel to my w204
Great job 👏 one of the few videos on the R107 that shows the pure joy and pleasure to drive it rather than a bunch of technical details. Ty 👍
these things sound great and this one is immaculate. Back when interior design was still a thing and not just "here's a monitor, now shut up"
My buddy Nick, his dad had a black 560 SL. That was the coolest car I had ever been in back then.
One of my top ten affordable dream cars, for sure.
So THAT's where the Freightliner Classic got it's alarm sound from.
Daimler owns freightliner to this day, and they have since 1981
@@Buick_GSX I actually had no idea they owned Freightliner from '81. That makes a lot of sense.
Two of my favorite kinds of cars - couches on wheels and roadsters - come together in this classic Benz. You love to see it.
I couldn’t say for sure if my father owned the 560 but he defiantly had a couple these in his time, loved riding in them as a child
That V8 sounds just gorgeous, in fact I'm quite surprised how vocal it is. Later on Mercedes heavily muffled the signature note of the V8 (apart from in the AMGs) ...shame.
You can always do muffler delete... but i dont know about that🤔
the AMGs sound like shit compared to the old V8
Not sure if you noticed, but the car actually starts in second gear. Unless you manually select first with the shifter, or floor it from a dead stop it will default to second gear off the line. My dad had a 1989...he loved that car, and kept it for over 20 years.
Came here to say this. Not sure he noticed it was starting in second. This things do launch like a rocket if you get it to go into first ..
Fascinating information. My family just brought one home. Does one need to put it in the "B" position on the shifter?
@@johnpearson492 yes, the “B” which stands for Braking locks the transmission into first gear. It will not shift into second unless you click it over into 2, so just be aware cause you’ll be bouncing off the redline pretty quickly!
My favourite review channel! 🤩
"In the way" is truly the most accurate description of the CR-V. Damn man, you really have a way with words!
I know all about the 560SL and the 380SL. I had an 84 380SL and a great car it was but my 89 560SL with 38k and garage kept is outstanding in every way. The thing is it is thirsty. My 2002 SLK320 was the best Mercedes ever made. The top is fabulous and it can get 30 miles per gallon. Enjoy these Mercedes sporty luxury cars
Just nice to see an 80s car that still holds up in terms of looks. Refreshing even 🙂
A beautiful car. My neighbour has imported one of these from the USA. The sound is phenomenal and it looks just great.
Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
I had a 74’ 450 SLC and it had that very same engine sound , indeed it was a pleasure to drive especially on the open highway.
Great video! Felt like I was driving it myself, love the sound of that engine. I have a 75 450 SLC love driving it and do all my own maintenance.
What kind of repairs have you had to do on yours?
Didn’t watch the video yet , but I can assure you that it will be amazing as always🤩
My dad had a bunch of W123s and W124s when i was a kid and that dash and the bus-sized steering wheel is causing me quite a bit of nostalgia rn!
You're an excellent reviewer! Thank you for your work. On most MB 4G tronics, you must slip the transmission down into "2", and notch it over to the right for a 1st gear shift. Your acceleration was a little soft off the line, because you were starting in 2nd! :-)
Very cool... in high school I had a friend who's parents had one of these. He'd borrow/steal it for joy rides. We always had one or two passengers squeezed into that "back seat". lol
You may not need to rev it up, but when you do it, that engine sound is so good
Gotta be one of the chillest cruisers out there. If I had enough money for a collection, this would be my lazy classic cruiser. Very nice.
I absolutely LOVE your videos...you really never fail to deliver...! Plus you drive around some really beautiful New England sceneries...
Love the red exterior and Palomino leather, looks absolutely gorgeous and posh.
12:12 such a charming slow upshift by that ooooooooold automatic box
I think this would be the *BEST* classic daily car you can get!
Modern mercedes cars are beautiful but I love the look of older mercedes. They look gangster 😎.
One of the most beautiful all-time Mercedes sports car.
I had a MB 1984 500 SEL awesome car. The motor just wants to keep going every time I was on the highway I kept going to 75 mph I had to constantly watch the speedometer and reduce speed to 55mph in NYC area. I never experienced this problem before on American vehicles or Japanese. They're easy to fix.
Tedward with the epic cars every time! 🙌🏼 Almost at 200k! Congrats in advance 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Love your reviews and commenting 👌🏼 Greetings 🤙🏼
PS: Loved that you found another old Mercedes while driving this. And that you waved 😎
I owned five cars of this great class, (of course not at the same time) and I had a Porsche 911 Turbo built in 1976.
Now I only have 221 Mercedes S-Class black 4Matic and I have ML, but I have a very big (Nostalgia) for this wonderful car (SL), so I decided to buy one. It is amazing, it will not be repeated and its price will never go down!! This car is a Legenda.
Ive always wanted one. Gosh this one is gorgeous!
Beautiful in every way.
Lovely review brings back memories of the 1970s and 80s. Many rich people back then had the W116 S class as their main car and the SL as a second car maybe for the wife or as a weekend car.
Keep em comin', Tedward. Loving catching up on your channel!
Reminds me of the movie, "Intersection" with Richard Gere going 80 mph in his 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SL roadster.
My dad just picked up one of these the other day with only 19K miles on it, one owner. It’s gorgeous
I own a Black 1988 560 with 2500 miles on it. :)
The R107 is indeed a true sexy beauty. The 560 is a real dream with that powerful 8 cylinder thing. And it sound so good. Not sure about the US spec additions like the double headlights, the far-too-bulky bumpers and the excessive chrome... No way this is an old man's car, if anything it's a sexy young ladies' car!!
One of my very favorite cars. Mine was Astral silver with Ash interior. Built strongly and reliable as hell! Thank you for the excellent video!
These were terrific cruisers with the Mercedes build and engineering prowess of the time. The Americanized headlights and bumpers, along with pinstripes and chrome wheel arches tended to kluge the design, but they offered a very relaxed top down driving experience.
I think the C107 is my dream Mercedes, my old employer had one and I was always very jealous.
Cool SL old mercs are always the best
Love the luxury this provides. I'd kill for one of these on days every thing aches and the horrible roads make driving miserable. Some days I don't mind it but some days a long for a car like this or an old LS400 etc....
Love the video, love the 560sl
It does seem like a fun cruiser with how you described it. Also, love how it sounds. I appreciate you leaving a few quiet segments while cruising on the low-end. Or were you just having that much fun driving? 😅 Anyways, I enjoyed watching this too.
I agree, very soothing and relaxing video, being behind that big steering wheels seems like a very nice place to be....especially with the top down and the sun beaming.
I think that is a 1988 or 1989 based on the third brake light. Very nice! I love my 1987 560SL.
actually possible its an 88 since it was a mid year 87 build date. I'll double check the reg
They were probably the best cars in the world back then attractive and well made.
Your videos make me very happy.
I really appreciate the choice of the featured cars. Lots of gems, lots of really desirable cars. Nice stuff! 🙂👍🏻
What an awesome car!
Yes, an icon and very relatable.
My grandfather once had one of these that looked identical to the example in this video. Always preferred it to the '98 R129 SL 500 his wife owned. Not fast by any means, but that's not the point. Lovely car. I distinctly remember how heavy the doors were, must have been 100 lbs each.
It's beautiful.
Love V8 engines ...lovely design ...iconic 🚘
I keep the roof down of my Miata most of the year - rain notwithstanding - thanks to its superb heater, knee vents, hand vents and heated seats. Although, I may well be look for a R107, next time! Always liked 'em! Great video, by the way. Well narrated, sharp/stable picture, good audio etc. Thanks for sharing and enjoy the driving!
👍😎👌
Thank you!
Please don't. These cars may look cool and ride nice but if the motor lets go, it will never run the same again. I've known at least 3 people who have owned a Mercedes roadster from this time period or before, and their engines have let go, and have been rebuilt and have blown again and have to be rebuilt again. Suffice to say that if the engine goes, your better off selling theses cars for scrape.
Love it, brilliant motor, thank you.
What a beautiful car, bro! Love this classic Benz.
that car is surprisingly quite I was immediately impressed
That's what I call a classic! Lovely choice!
Absolutely beautiful car.
Great review, really is a dream to drive; ive recently just got a 88 560sl, although needs some work still sure is a beautiful thing!
Thee most beautiful convertable ever.
Old sl were such a good looking cars
Very detailed video. Thank you!
Nice ride man. Greetings from Brazil.
loved red M....am writing this even the video started coz I know this is going to be fun...and the cam set up... am going to drive it Ted....am going to
I believe the R129 has the best balance of the analog feel with modernity.
Nothing being made today comes close to the feeling of occasion you get when rolling in one of these older cars, unless you get a Bentley or Rolls Royce
So fast after kickdown. For this years, of course
The 560SL was by far the fastest R107 sold in USA, though by today's standards it is quite slow. It is much faster than the 380SL which preceded it, but that's not saying much.
This is my dream classic car !!! Ohhh god why don’t you buy me this Benz????
That idle sound almost put me to sleep. What a beautiful car.
i love this settled V8-sound of the M117. Not so moronic aggressive like modern AMGs
Smooth and confident

Amazing car, no doubt
I've got a 500slc hiding in a barn that I really want to get running and this makes we want it BAD 😂
Ah, Rt 128, the highway of my youth.
beautiful
I own a 380SL with the almost same spec !
I miss my 560sl… and yes I did hit my head on the grille countless times
How was the scuttle shake?
Finally a roadster that doesn't pretend to have back seats. Convertibles with unusable backseats are confusing. It's neither a seat, nor a storage.
True. Ironically a microscopic rear seat was available for these.
Oh man, what a car!
Awesome video, awesome car. Hope one day @Tedward will put his hands on some LADA.
i have a 380se, love it
