Abhinav Mukund's hunger to win Ranji Trophy for TN is just amazing. I request media to cover Ranji Trophy and domestic cricket more so that more ppl get interested. It's high time we show interest and start respecting Ranji players. This is the least which we can do.

Fantastic interview ash! Keep up the good work! I used to play a lot against Abhi(St.Bede's) when I was in school(Chettinad Vidhyashram). He would score a 50 or 100 in almost every match! All the coaches were scared of abhi and used to plan how to take his wicket only to fail badly. LOL! He was an absolute run machine! I always thought he would go on to play for India and score heavily but the selectors have not treated him fairly! If he was a mumbai player he would've been picked in his teens!

As of my knowledge, top district teams in TN are, Chennai, Kanjipuram, Krishnagiri, Coimbatore, Dindugul, Tirunelveli. Tirunelveli la irunthu niraya players TN represent pannirkanga. Even Vijay Shankar is from South Tamilnadu

He was useless in England 2011. No technique against swing or pace. On the other hand, Dhawan debut 180 against Starc n johnson.

Surely Mukund making debut at England can't be an excuse. Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid also made their debut at Lord's , England and scored 131 and 95 respectively.

Hats off to both of you. Both have the strong burning sense of success in your belly. Good to see such cricketers from TN. Very well analysed. Nice to hear from Abhi. I have been an ardent follower of Madras league from as early as late 70s and early 80s.
TN never had battery of fast bowlers in the team at any point of time. Most wickets were matted no turf those days except MCC. This also had issues with moving deliveries for batsmen in Ranji/Duleep.
We had Venkat, VV Kumar, S Vasu, L Siva , WV Etc in team for Long and the spinners ruled the state or city. Fast bowlers were only for eight overs. Where as Hyderabad/Karnataka those days had good fast bowlers. This is the reason V Ramnarayan great offie played for HYD rather than TN as a spinner till such time S Yadav took over.
But we still had wicket taking M pace bowers those days like Kalyanasundaram, P Mukund K Bharathkumar, TA Sekar, B Arun etc., But like what Abhi said they could never win many matches as wickets were spinners paradise.
Youngsters like you still should take the GAP in Pace bowlers in TN seriously and strongly to TNCA and seek support of stalwarts like TA, B Arun , BharathKumar L Bala Who are still training people for pace. May be time to give more rewards and facilities to Pace aspirants. Not so easy with organisations but doing something that’s the need with obstacles is also learning.
Anyway Ash you are amazing the way you communicate with clarity. Plan yourself to start up sports communication company. Will work well. Also nice to see you trimmed down a bit. Good luck. Take good care stay safe.

Very good interview, Ash. Apart from being an outstanding batter, we have seen a little bit of Abhinav as a commentator. But, it is you who has opened out the cricket admin and preparedness related views of Abhinav which are absolutely important.
Lovely content, good job guys! If winning a Ranji Trophy is what that gives them the utmost satisfaction, it is time for them to move on to other teams and go get the championship ring! It is about time that athletes that play team sports make decisions that are more professional than emotional.
I love this series and a very regular watcher. Completely echoed my thoughts. After that final against rajasthan, WV raanan left for Bengal, tech committee headed by dada changed format and we lost the chokers tag as well because we stopped hitting knockouts consistently. And yeah agree with the fast bowlers point totally
Look at teams who did well in recent Ranji s all had decent fast bowlers : Vidharbha Rajneesh Gurbani, Bengal Ishan Porel, Saurashtra : Unadkat, Karnataka : Mithun
Abinav Munkund can still play international cricket.... His performance was amazing in RANJI and captained TN team ...... Hopefully in the upcoming yrs we can produce fast bowlers and win ranji and may your dream come true 😄😄
Well said Ash and Mukund. Last few years, it feels like TN has been playing catch up in the competition. We seem to start slow and get better towards the end. But I am sure we will win it pretty soon.

Rajasthan had a centre similar to UAE as well. They laid out pitches in the nets for an Australia touring team for training. I think this happened like 8 years ago. Not sure.

Tamilnadu getting better in limited overs cricket is good to see. But it's frustrating to see the performances in Ranji Trophy last few years. I always wanted us to lift the Ranji. We have seniors with experience in all department. It's time for us to pick the best team for the next season. If u want to win a red ball tournament I agree with Abhi, we needed 5 genuine fast bowlers in a squad. Look at Virat's test team being competitive in all conditions in long format. In that 5 bowlers one or two should be a pinch hitter for sure like Umesh and Shami. Wishing them best to lift the Big prize in upcoming season.

ABHINAV is in high regards of those who follow TN cricket
Either in the Past or present, the only issue for TN fast bowlers is lack of pace.. comparing to other state fast bowlers, our guys are probably reaching only 120 to 125 kph which is very disappointing.. example mohammed, J Koushik etc.. Swing and moderate length isn't enough to trouble the batsman all the time.. I think L Vignesh is having some decent pace than others.. so we have to increase the pace along with the line and length.. As abhi said, stamina is very important for a fast bowler to maintain the pace and bowling long spells.. I'm Eagerly waiting to see some TN bowlers who can bowl with sheer pace and length like other state guys.. So that they can seal a long term spot in the TN team.. lot of time is there for next Ranji season.. so the TN fast bowlers should utilize the opportunity with their skills and abilities to make into the team.. Either they are from U 19 or division.. it doesn't matter.. Hoping for the best✌️

My favourite commentator in Tamil - Abhinav mukund
Although MRF pace foundation is in MCC school,chetpet, Chennai has trained many greats like Zaheer, Irfan Pathan ,R.P Singh ,Vaas, Johnson ,Lee etc..Why Tamilnadu bowlers aren't selected for it.
They can utilize the facilities and It would be great for them to prepare to bowl in pace pitches and learn guidance from McGrath.
For giving our fast bowlers a chance, we should have an infrastructure with a wicket made for them. Not sure chennai or Madurai grounds will help. But we should build another ground in tamilnadu assisting fast bowlers. Weather is also important mostly Coimbatore or some other place with good swinging conditions. Also we should have them a game in Chennai games also by not keeping them on bench. Atleast 2 fb and on A.R. fb like vijay Shankar in a spinning conditions.

But i played under 19 Chandigarh along with Yuvraj Singh 1994 to 1995.(Mohali).i am also friend of T. Kumaran. thanks.
Abhinav mentioned that there is a gap somewhere, i think its because of the fact that players dont want to get out of their comfort zone as in after a particular age, our players start to play cricket just to get a job in the sports quota in corporates where as in other states, they have no option other than cricket

TN cricket should follow grassroots level model followed in English football. It could take years. But, once it starts running, there is no stop.

One thing I respectfully disagree with what's spoken is the gap is little. The team that played until 2010 had little gaps to be filled since they went to knockouts every now and then. The team in this decade has a very huge gap to be filled

Since Abhinav is here with you in this interview just want to know what happen to one left handed opener from Prahaladh cricket academy & PSSSS school mylapore a guy called Praveen Srivatsan almost the same age as abhinav a promising young cricketer(almost a prodigee in making) in the age group tournament but completely nowhere to be found even in first division cricket.
I myself have played a little competitive represented combined districts at U 14,15,17 (played for kancheepuram) was coached by VB sir (played a few games against you and the Hindu newspaper name given to you was Ra Ashwin if i remember) and you were a top order batsmen. abhinav was St bede's.

I am just curious to know what happened with this guy Praveen Srivatsan he was a prolific run make in the age group tournaments (U15,U17 & U19). i really put my money on that guy to make it to the Ranji and South zone, but all of a sudden this guy completely vanished.
Since this particular episode was concentrated towards domestic players i thought this to be right forum to know about the players who lost focus and moved on to pursue other professions.

Hi ashwin ,..lets be honest on some realities......yes we do have the best talent in our ranji trophy team..no doubt...Do we have or prepare sportive wickets in tnca ist div leagues.......whether can.we deny administrators influence on team selections.....in my opinion we need to have a neutral and strong coach like chandrakant pandit or lalchand rajput or even whatmore...one of the reasons may be we fail in handling egos of top cricketers ...i can very comment on this as i have gone through first div cricket for 15 yrs..plyed TN for one day, was in ranji probables for many years.buchi babu for few years and all age level tournaments for Tn.
TNCA div 1,2 have to be more inclusive and fine

It has to be Tamil Nadu in the entire team composition not just in the name. Take the game to small towns and villages. There is tremendous talent there. Dont imperialise the game within Chennai.

We need to start picking players based on talent and not based on caste. Maybe we still haven't found a world class fast bowler because we keep looking for players from a particular caste who are not specifically known for their strong bodies or brute strength considering they have been eating vegetarian food for generations. Just imagine excluding 85-95% of a state's talent based on a caste! Its things like these that gave us the awful reservation system in the first place. Wonder if these people will ever come out of their medieval mindset!
Before days it was happened brother...Now a days there will be no politics based on performance they are selecting,as ash said those who are taking wickets can automatically selected by the panel....So work hard and get wickets on board...we will be selected and we can lift the ranji trophy......

I personally know loads of division level fast bowlers who consistently bowl 140kph+ who just gave up because of these caste based discrimination and now work in IT/govt jobs! Lots of talented fast bowlers/batsman's have their dreams destoryed! This casteist monopoly needs to be abolished! When you can't even acknowledge this problem we can't progress anywhere! We may win one or two ranjis by fluke but we'll go back to being trash very soon. The only way forward is to abolish this caste monopoly! The state govt needs to step in and take away power from these private entities who control TNCA

TN is not able to produce fast bowlers coz of various reasons like *slow pitches, hot conditions, genetics etc* . You need to be extremely talented & well built in the likes of Akram to get wickets here in the long formats of the game. *Fast bowlers should have tall stature with Broad shoulders to naturally swing & pace the ball* . That's Why Aus, Eng, Pak, WI have produced World class bowlers.
Just can't simply carry caste agenda everytime for everything. Even the best Ranji trophy winning teams had ample set of "different caste" players. Do they ever refrain from Winning ?

Tamilnadu women's cricket has produced great players like Shantha Rangaswamy - first female Arjuna awardee recipient, former Indian captain ,First Indian woman cricketer to score a century and others like Thirush Kamini, Nagarajan Niranjana , Hemalatha etc.
Apart from women's league started in 2018, are any opportunities created for them to showcase & develop their talent ?
