Restoration Of An 80's Icon - Honda CR-X

- This time on RRC Restoration I'm taking on the challenge of restoring this 1991 Honda CR-X that I bought some time ago from a guy that had it sitting on his driveway for the best part of 20 years and now that I have some time I thought now would be a great time to get stuck in and get it restored. Its currently a 1.5X with twin carbs and an automatic transmission so not very sporty at all but through the course of this video that will all change as I plan to restore this car to OEM plus to make it a very useable car on modern roads and traffic but still retain all of that 80's charm even though its a 90's car... but we'll ignore that fact lol. Anyway lets crack on and get it in the workshop.

Restoration Of An 80's Icon - Honda CR-X
This is one of the few channels where I can immediately like any video that comes out. Love your topics, presentation and skills!
You're too kind :)
Agreed!
Same here😂
I agree 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Funny ive just done the same before reading this comment 😆
I was so disappointed when I saw it was an automatic. So happy when you mention the manual conversion!
Pretty much this for everyone lol
Agree. Whenever I see a classic sports car as an automatic, I'm sad. Without a conversion they are basically mechanically totaled and have been for decades.
@@JonBoehmcan you explain this for someone who is not that into cars?
@@eduardolarrymarinsilva76 nope
@@eduardolarrymarinsilva76Those early autos were anemic and sapped any fun from an engine that likes to rev on a car that weighs nothing.
Manual on a CRX are absolute blast to drive. That Lightweight 80’s Japanese cars with manual experience will never come back ever again. Cars these days are very heavy. That nimble light feel can only be enjoyed with a manual where you can downshift at your own discretion to get the power necessary to say… pass a car while lane changing, or after you come out of a turn. Downshifting a light car feels way more peppy and responsive. It’s like you’re wearing the car instead of riding in one.
I miss those days.
As soon as you said “going to do a manual conversion..” I literally went “OH HELL YEAH!!!!”
This car will be AWESOME once it gets the RRC treatment + MANUAL!!!
Thank you, glad you are enjoying it :)
Manual is the best for this beautiful car 😊
Had 2 of them. Brilliant cars. When you are busy put in a vtec engine… always love those cars. Spend al my money in it. Good memories 😎
The best restoration channel on the internet 👍
You're too kind :)
Without a shadow of doubt, definitely the best restoration channel by far!
Absolutely yes..his knowledge is unbelievable
Totally agree.

Nice! I had an '85 CRX-Si, with a Jackson Racing engine and suspension. It was a street-legal go-kart. I brought it from California to Spain when I moved, what a great car it was.
Nice, that sounds like an awesome bit of fun :)
I ordered an 85 CRX .. I ordered a SI and the regular CRX.. The regular CRX came in first, so I bought it... What a fun car..I got married about the same time and the CRX had to go.. Had I known then what I know now, I would have kept the CRX and sent her packing...
I always wanted the Si, it looked so much more sporty than the regular CRX.
Right in the feels, I owned a '90 model here in South Africa. That car was my unicorn. So so much trouble I got into.
Love it! :)
I have 1992 Celica Convertible. Way more fun that more newer cars. 😂
Power isn't a measure of fun.
The old dual carb setup! These are ECU controlled. The vacuum tubes go to a mysterious black box. Thanks for taking me back in time.
Mysterious black box 😂😂 I remember
As an american... seeing a CRX with an auto trans, auto mirrors, auto windows, auto A/C... with a carb made me very jealous. Talk about options!!
Japanese market only fella, we Europeans got the shit models also.
This is going to be...............EPIC! Another long restoration project, and looking forward to every episode 👍😎.
Really happy to hear you are looking forward to it :)
@@RRCRestoration I look forward to all of your videos. George was looking very shifty sitting in the drivers seat, keep an eye on your keys when the CRX is finished, 🤣.
@@shaunhardie6077 Haha love it!
the fact you did a manual conversion just shows how awesome you are
Thank you RRC for the new project & video ...
Thank you for watching :)
Excellent work with the detailed camera angles that allow beginners to learn how to restore, in this case, a Honda CR-X.
I worked at a Honda dealership back in the mid to late 90s, they know how to build cars…. And bikes lol😂 brings back some memories, looking forward to this project. Great choice!
Nice, really glad it brought back some memories and i hope you enjoy the rest of the series : )
I come to this channel for the bikes but omg this hit me in the nostalgia! Great choice my friend!
Thank you, really glad to hear you like my choice.
THANK YOU. For getting rid that automatic transmission.
Its my pleasure ;)
Love the algorithm for this. I’m an avid CR-X fan and have had one nearly 18 years.
Useful little tip, there is a jacking point in the middle of the front cross member. Saves a bit of time!
I wanted one of these in high school! I currently have a few ‘80s Hondas…of the dirt bike variety. 👊🏻 This is gonna be good!!
Such a cool little car and for how popular they seem to have been there doesn't appear to be to many left for some reason. I hope you enjoy the series buddy :)
Had one in the late 80's during college, mine was a standard. One of the funnest cars I ever had. Thing was basically a go-cart. I'm stunned Honda hasn't brought something similar back yet!!!
Maestro at it again. I am commenting without having watched it. Why? Cuz I see 2800 people have already given it a thumbs up and that is in 3 hours.. I believe there are a few people who are delivering quality and those who watch such contributions are consistently proving that the world we live in a good number of good people are craving for quality over crap/quantity. Thank you for sharing yet another masterful rendition of values I hope people get to incorporate into their daily lives i.e. that desire to want to do the right thing & paying attention to detail.
Thank you so very much for that very kind comment my friend and i hope when you get around to watching the video you will enjoy it thoroughly :)
@@RRCRestoration yes, finished watching it & every word I said ahead of watching holds true. Muchas gracias... someday Ill have a few shekels to contribute to your patreon page.. some of us are stiill trying to get a few shekels to survive :). Peace brother.
I was already interested on this, but when you mentioned the manual conversion, I became INVESTED. I’m eager to watch this series. Good job, man
I can’t even remember the last time I saw a CR-X!
Apart from this one , I haven't seen one on the road in easily 10+ years!
You won't see many in Europe, you barely see Hondas in France no idea why. Ive seen a civic type r not too long ago but that was it. I see more ferraris and lambos then i do Hondas.
prolly depends where in Europe you are, here in Finland mid-2000s-2010s Accords and CR-Vs are quite common on the roads, civics and other "smaller" cars are scarcer. @@bluej511
I have a mk3 sitting outside
I absolutely love the level of detail you are putting into your videos lately. A year ago, this would have been 3 minutes in a 30 minute complete disassembly video. It still would have been great, but this is just next level. The amount of extra time and effort required to film so many different steps, getting the camera and lights in place for damn near every screw, is just really impressive dedication. Thanks man!
Thank you so much for that kind comment, it means a lot when people recognize how much effort goes into making these videos :)
Honda... sits there for 20 fkn years... a bit of juice in the carbs, charged battery and Hey Presto - started right up IMMEDIATELY lol.
Haha I know right, only a Honda.
This is one of the best made restoration video series out there! From your narration to the editing this entire series is awesome! Love your work!
I had a 87 Prelude that was in similar condition. The boot had rusted out and was pretty bad round rear windscreen and had been smacked in the rear to complicate things further.
A pillars, and sunroof was terrible too. Good thing yours doesn’t have a sunroof.
I found that a lot of panels didn’t have seam sealer on it and were folded over rather than butted together or spot welded over. Technology advances and seam sealer/welding got better since then.
Your build brings me back to that car, it was awesome even though being so far gone.
I love the calm pace of narration and Scottish accent. It’s like a relaxation tape.
I had an '88 Si back in about 1995. All black with black interior, alloys and spoiler. 1.6 Manual. All the high end trim etc. Same shape as this one too. Was a magic little car in the day. Miss it.
I do remember these little CRX cars, at one time I had a Honda Concerto. The way it just started up was positive, not bad after standing idle for years. You are one of the most tidy minded people I have ever seen. to my mind it's the only way to do this kind of work without loosing parts and bolts all over the place.
Still the best resto channel on RUclips. You were my inspiration on getting my GC8 back on the road. 2 years on and its well rallied.
My wife had an '85 CRX-Si. Bright red. What a blast that little car was!
Love your channel paticularly the detailed deconstruction and rebuild of any projects you take on. If I had the time my own tin box would be in an A1 condition.
Great restoration as always. For 22 minutes I was thinking: "what a waste having an automatic in that car, which is a real club racer from factory". Good one. Luxurious with AC in a CRX. I recon it is a must in Japan.
George is the best. Always works with a smile. We had a Henry growing up.
I had a 1988 red CRX with manual transmission that I absolutely loved. It got me all over Miami and also to North Carolina. My only regret is that I gave it away to one of my wife’s relatives. That thing would have run forever. An expat reminiscing in S Florida.
My first car. OH, how I miss her. You brought back some great memories, when I used to work on my car in the driveway. So much work ahead. The best of luck.
This must be a labor of love because I think you'll have more invested in the car than what it will be worth when your done. Nothing wrong with that if it's a car you plan on keeping and enjoying.
Knowing the way you work I can imagine this will be better than when Honda made it. Love the channel.
You're too kind :)
This is going to be great to watch.
These cars were quite before their time, climate control was a real high end addition to an early 90s vehicle
Thank you , glad you are looking forward to it :)
Wow, back in the day, these were tuned up to be one of the pocket rockets that us kids wanted. Much envy was sent to those lucky to have one. Looking forward to the restoration! The interior set up outside of the car was epic!
Clicked immediately when I saw the video on my feed!
Thank you for the kind comment, I hope you enjoy the series :)
The joy of a 6am coffee and an RRC Restoration. Life is good, 😀😀
Enjoy :)
My first car was a 1985 1/2 year CRX HF. It amazes my how different the interior is just a few years later.
Love the new project. Especially enjoyed the interior mock up with George the vacuum in the driver’s seat. Looking forward to the next episode.
Thank you, glad you are looking forward to it :)
We had an 86 crx in red and a white 1990 crx Wagovan back in the early 90s! My husband was so tall his head would stick out of the crx sunroof 😂 Our firstborn rode home from hospital in that Wagovan. Great cars ❤
I could watch this man work all day. Love the channel, you rock sir!
Thank you so much : )
Always a treat when you unveil a new project! An automatic in a CR-X - blasphemy! So glad you'll be correcting that!
I am indeed ;)
I had a red Honda CRX from 1986. Loving this restoration already,
Really happy to hear that :)
Thank you for going back to the long form videos. I truly enjoy your attention to detail.
If you're going to be doing more car projects/maintenance I'd highly recommend buying a mid-rise scissor lift. I bought a Stratus brand lift 2 years ago for my garage and it's SO nice to not have to use jack stands any more. I can access the underside of our cars sitting on a rolling stool. They're more affordable these days and can be rolled around as needed. Thanks for the videos!
This is gonna be a good project! I used to have an '88 CRX HF in metallic blue, with a '92 Del Sol engine in it. What a fun car! HF was a mid-level trim, but it still didn't have the automatic HVAC like this one. Looking forward to the next video!
Nice, really glad to hear you are looking forward to this one :)
Enjoying seeing a car on your channel. Can't wait for the next episodes. I know in advance that you'll do a great job on this old Honda.
Thank you glad you enjoyed it :)
You sir are one brave fellow with this one all the best and like all your restorations I shall follow with interest.
I literally cheered the moment u said u were manual swaping it. I was expecting a new Honda N/A engine like a F20 or a K20.
Absolutely brilliant work once again!
Cheers, glad you liked it :)
Brilliant! In response to your question about what content I say that I trust your choice and taste. I’m here for your skills regardless of what machine you apply them to. Keep up the amazing work. Thank you.
Thank you for the comment and the feedback its much appreciated :)
Phew… so relieved to hear you say the words ‘manual conversion’😅 Another great project to follow👍
Love it! I have a soft spot for these. A fella in the 90s I knew with an unconventional job had the nicest one I ever saw, white with a red interior. Very fast and low and handled so well. I love the transparent rear panel in the hatch. Excited for this series!
White on red, now that's a combo I've never seen before, was it a special order from Honda? So glad to hear you are excited for the series :)
@@RRCRestoration I think it started as red with red interior but he had it resprayed alpine white. My memories of that time are a bit fuzzy 🙂
Such an amazing and satisfying channel to watch!! I would love to one day take a car apart but id quickly forget where everything goes.
God Bless your cast iron stomach, you are delving in an area where most would not travel. As always, I really admire your methodical approach when it comes to completion of each piece from tear down to each stage of repair and then restoration. to be honest, I don't like these cars but I'm looking forward to the series, I like the way you roll.
Thank you very much for that kind comment :)
It must be nice knowing that your CRX will be much better than when it left the assembly line!! 😊👏👍
What an undertaking! My wife and I love watching what you have for us next! Can't wait to see your upcoming videos. Keep up the good work. You are one talented man. My wife says you need to show yourself more. Lol.
Thank you so much :)
I had an 1987/manual. Loved that little car. I wish I still had it. Was like a go cart and around 40 MPG..
I'm doing this exact job on my crx now. Good to have it all catalogued on video so I can double check where things go.
I currently have a 1985 blue and gray crx with 91,000 orig miles.....starts right up .......runs great and is in fairly decent shape ....... excellent little car.!!!!!
My brother had two of these in the States, wrecked both of them. So glad you’re changing to the manual transmission !
Always fancied one of these. Interesting to see what might be involved. For having sat in a driveway, the shell looks remarkably sound. Yes, I'm with you on the manual conversion.
Your channel inspired me to do my honda translap rebuild!
Thank you a lot.
It requires so much more time to film and edit things you're doing.
George seems to be thrilled with the new project! He’s sitting in the car, helping clean up…be careful he doesn’t claim it for himself!
Hopefully your little green figurine stays around for final reveal.
What a great car!! I had one almost 10 years ago, 89` ED9 model with DOHC D16A9 engine.. loved it!
Back in the day I had a silver ‘88 crx. Kyb gr2 struts, eibach lowering springs, suspension braces all over front & rear, 17” 5 spoke wheels with 205/40zr17 tires, jdm twin cam ZC engine, hks turbo kit. , 5zigen fireball "cat-back exhaust, rear disc brake conversion, ebc drilled & slotted rotor and ebc pads. L.E.D. Bulbs in everything. Loved that car. Traded it for an ‘87 Supra turbo 5 spd fully loaded.
Very nice, sounds like you spent an absolute fortune on that CRX. The supra Is a seriously cool car too though. would love to get a MK4 for the channel one day.
@@RRCRestoration I bought the car for $300. Put thousands into it. lol
I've been looking for one of these to restore myself! Excited to watch you progress and get some pointers. Cheers!
I am so stoked for this project! I had a 1990 Honda Civic hatchback but wanted a CRX in the worst way! This is my personal unicorn.
So happy to hear you are excited for this one :)
Cool car! I have a friend that had one, I think his was an 89-90 model. He made the mistake of letting me drive it one day, lol it was so much fun to whip around in traffic 😂😂😂. After a few years he gave it to me, so I stripped it down, put a roll cage in it and turned it into a mini stock car and raced it several years out at Myrtle beach speedway. Man the good ole days! As always you’re the best restoration channel out there, keep up the terrific work! I would enjoy getting to come to Scotland someday to meet you! I forgot to mention that the one I raced was the si version with the vtec dohc cams. It did very well against all the 4 cylinder pony mustangs 👍
Sounds awesome, thanks so much for sharing your memories with us :)
I had an '86 CRX Si and loved that little thing. tiny car, small engine, but what a combination!
Nice :)
Excited for this one! I had many 80s and 90s Hondas but never a CRX. Buddy of mine in high school had one and I always loved them!
So glad to hear you are excited for this one :)
Absolute dream car! The manual conversion is a must though, cant wait to see this finished.
Love this project. My sister had an old CRX, but really man, this is gonna be A LOT of work. Looking forward to the transformation.
Yeah it is defo going to be a lot of work, the thought of doing it is pretty daunting tbh but broken up into small sections over a period of time it shouldn't be too bad ;)
It hasn't done too many miles for its age and the interior looks in great nick. Shame it's not a manual VTEC, but I'd suggest that's why it's remained unsold and unmolested for so long!
I think your probably right about that, Im glad though as you say that's why its a survivor ~:)
Unfortunately it has significant rust. However glad you're saving the car, and doing a manual transmission conversion. Much more fun. 👍
Looking forward to the restoration.
THIS IS ONE of the best channel i watched always, i love your vid of restoration. more power to your channel. watching from PHL.
Thank you so much :)
I miss my 1990 CRX, Thanks for the great videos! Been enjoying them for a few years now and look forward to seeing them when posted!
Thank you, really happy to hear you enjoy my videos :)
my honda history is, 4 civics 3 doors and coupes, then a aero deck vti, followed by an accord typ r and now my daily, after a few years of honda absence ,is an 99 accord coupe v6, that i have restored , too. so i am super happy with your new project. greetings from germany and thanks for your vids
WOW you certainly like your Honda's im afriad my history with them only extends to this CRX and a couple of 3 door civics one of which was a type R.
@@RRCRestoration first time i see an crx with a automatic. my accord , of course,is an automatic, too. but would nt it be cool to change it to a manual. hondas have great short throw gearboxes;)))
Always pleased to see any new RRC project turn up, I’m thinking this unloved forgotten car will now be not only saved but probably be just as good if not better than the day if rolled off the production line. Eagerly awaiting all the remaining restoration.
Thank you so much for your kind comment :)
Crikey you’ve taken on a heck of a challenge there Big Man. Good luck, can’t wait to see how this turns out when you’ve worked your magic on it.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Yeah its a big one this time, just hope i haven't bitten off more than i can chew ... only time will tell lol
My very first car after college was a 1989 red CRX. That car was a lot of fun to drive though not in Atlanta traffic (manual transmission and no AC - bought it in Connecticut and didn't think I'd need it!)!
I don't recall our CR-X's in the States having any type of psuedo back seat like this one? Always loved these cars and they seemed to have mostly disappeared. Very much looking forward to this restoration by the Master!
Saw the automatic box and thought that’s a shame, so glad you’re gonna convert it to manual it will be way more fun! Keep up the fantastic work 🤙
Thanks! Will do!
Bringing back memories of my 89 and 90 Si(s).... Thanks for saving these awesome machines!
Nice one :)
This means there definitely a lot of hope for my 91 CRX Si!!!!!!
I really look forward to this restoration series, especially the painting process. I would advise to remove the sound deadening from the floorpan, as it likes to hide lots of surface rust.
Maybe do a manual convertion? Give it some period tuning parts like bigger carbs and a suspension upgrade?
I love your channel. Best teach to restoration, clear aganist old dirty.
I had a girlfriend in the 80's who's brother bout a crx when it came out. I remember it looked so modern and forward thinking. What a great car. One of Honda's great unique cars, like the Element.
I totally agree they were very different from everything else at the time.
Looking forward to watching this one 👍 not bad condition given its age and history !! I was expecting your jack to go right through it .😮 and it to be a crx version of the anthill mobs car !!! No floor 😁😁 great work as usual .👍
Nice1 mate, great car. Lots of fun. Can't imagine there's too many of these things left. The orignal pocket rocket.
Looking forward to the next episode. 👍
My mate had one, in a fantastic metallic blue. It went like the clappers! 👍
Good luck with your new project my friend.....i love old school Japanese cars...
Cheers buddy, always good to hear from you :)
I look forward to watching the next episode.
A great idea to put a manual gearbox in the CR-X can't wait to see the finishing product, from Australia 🦘
