Lots of drama and plenty of speed! Another big episode, who's impressed you the most? 🙌
Chiara
Chiara and Alex have done well. I’m thinking Alex for the win, but it’s close. The German lady seems a bit lost tactics wise
I can’t choose between the Italian and Belgian rider on the Men’s. Lucas seemed out of his depth racing today. Holding at the back is fine but he was too far back to take advantage of that position.
VDP
Glad they clarified that Alex wasn't at fault for the crashes. Hope it hasn't got into her head too much. Great to have someone like Manon on the spot to reassure!
Luca
I bet that Canyon/SRAM team wasn't too thrilled to see one of their riders injured like that, but accidents do happen. I hope that the ladies heal well and heal quickly. I'm surprised how much I've been enjoying the Zwift Academy Finals videos. It's been fun and exciting to watch, and it's just what the cyclist in me needed for motivation on these cold, dark December days. Bravo GCN. ♥😁
Glad you've been enjoying it! Will you be tuning in tonight for the final?
@@gcn I wouldn't miss it! 🍿
Wishing Pauliena a speedy recovery. That was a nasty crash
I'm not sure how serious the broken wrist is, but I hope she is ok for next years racing.
shes already back on the bike :)
Hopefully can get some good indoor sessions in
Much more interesting than W/kg on Zwift. Loved to see all the tactical details.
Great to see the skill behind their big numbers! 💪
not the crashes though
Just watts, not even kg 😂
Simon : "Van der Poel is responding and is gonna be nervous now!"
Everyone watching : "No he isn't"
It would have been nice to hear from the riders after the races.
You should have subtitled MVDP! He said he was going to take out his wallet to Win hahaha, Kristof replied jokingly: “that’s a way to win as well”
I was hoping someone translated it for us! Thanks a lot!
I’m stunned. Open road racing. Taking down and injuring a pro. One of the greats of cycling putting himself on the line for this. Not sure if it’s irresponsible or awesome. What other sport would you see this
Irresponsible. Riding on the other side of the road to gain a few tenths of a second, taking risks on descents, do they really think this is a good precedent to set?
I think the team probably must feel a bit guilty that on a 4km course, which takes minutes to drive, no one checked it was safe before they raced on it. Big Mag said the road was covered in oil! Can't blame Alex for that, she was on the front, racing for a life changing contract and first to hit the oil, she didn't stand a chance. It could have been much worse
@@pantster9855 You can even see the big black streak of oil at 33:48, but a bunch of internet keyboard warriors are going to insist that Alex was at fault in both incidents. It’s a damn shame that people are this way.
@@irvhh143 now you’re talking absolute rubbish keyboard warrior. You can’t stay upright on oil, on a bend. Don’t be ridiculous
@@irvhh143 that’s not true. You can see in the video that both of her wheels let go at the exact same time. There is no recovering from that or drifting it. It’s like getting both feet kicked out from under you at the same time. You are going to land on your ass
Three very sore cyclists after that day.
Hope everyone is ok and doctors were very cautious and conservative to allow them to continue.
It is clear zwift numbers aren't enough, riders need bike handling and race experience and nous
and, to be fair they should expect the courses are safe and have been checked beforehand. So much oil "I thought my car was leaking" isn't a good duty of care when they expect riders to give everything for the chance of a life changing contract
This was the issue last year. This format is too compressed.Really, they should be working with the young riders for 2 or 3 years. Everything comes down to a single race. A rider might be having an off day or make a bad decision due to pressure. Chiara is strong but still learning bike handling and tactics. Maybe a year of racing would see a big improvement, or maybe she'll never get it.
The race with novices on open roads is high risk, but this is how it is. All cyclists and runners at every level must practice on open roads.
Very entertaining, but should they even be racing on open roads with so much at stake? Would be illegal in UK.
@@howarddale3782 official races in the U.K. require prior notice and marshalls but this wouldn’t
But no don’t think it quite works really. You can’t have a dream job on the line then say “go careful” as you can see they cut across the wrong side of the road etc. the first female race even went through a town where Mag said careful at the stop sign. Legally you have to STOP at a stop sign. I actually live in Calp and know these roads, you can easily use both sides the roads but there’s so many better roads
Overall it's a bad idea having this race on an open public road, someone was bound to get hurt. Imagine a car coming from the other side during that first crash.
It's the girls keeping it spicy this year I feel! Chiara heart and soul!! Cmon guys get in the game...
I understand 'racing' on open roads as a pro rider while training, or even on a Sunday club ride for a bit of fun. To 'race' on open and fast roads like those while fighting for a potential pro contract is asking for trouble.
I was really enjoying this series up until now. The risk of running stop signs, crossing solid white lines and at times riding towards oncoming traffic is ridiculous. Poor decision for whoever organised this session, hopefully lessons are learnt.
Have to agree. I was nervous even before the crashes with them constantly crossing the center line. This made me lose some respect for GCN to allow this stuff to happen. Eric Minn, CEO of Zwift, needs to pull rank here and implement changes for this program immediately.
Yeah, this is horrible and a very poor example for the young people watching this series. Real let-down. The women's team also payed a high price for this foolish idead. A broken wrist is serious and it even ended a couple of pro's careers...
I agree , but to attack the way she did by basically riding into the rider causing them to crash was down to inexperience to the point of not having a clue about how to race on the road . She at least is clearly not ready to be doing this .
@@andyhodge9703 I totally agree that it was crazy allowing them to ride on the wrong side of the road around corners etc. But the first crash was just a racing incident. Yeah Alex veered into her somewhat, but it's as much Chiara's fault not holding onto her bars properly. Shit happens and in that case I don't think it was down to Alex being "inexperienced", she's got 1000% more race experience than the other two.
@@andyhodge9703 Correction: She wasn't at fault in the first incident. Alex was hugging the middle line, which is the end of the road. Chiara moved towards the middle, then a bit straight, then closed the gap entirely. That's not predictable behaviour for the riders behind or next to her. Therefore a racing incident. It does show that Chiara wasn't aware that Alex was overtaking her.
Practical braking, avoiding road debris, and most of all keeping your eyes on the road isn't a metric for Zwift.
Can't wait for tomorrow! APRI BANDITO APRI
Do you think it's his for the taking? 🤔
@@gcn I hope so, but Jasper and Lucas are strong, let's see 🤞
He looks like a pro already!
@@gcn the cycling knowledge ( recovery, nutrition, etc etc ) that Luca has is unmatched by the others, as well as being a TOP climber.... and he is only 25 years of age.... If they don't choose him....they are blind 😅😂
Being able to understand Mathieu’s joke at 24:17 is a small bonus :)
Let's go Il Bandito
Zwift needs to add oilslicks to the platform.
A new smart device that swings up and smacks you off your bike when you hit an oil slick. $1m idea.
Love the Zwift Academy Finals, I've been really looking forward to it after last year's competition. I found the races in this episode super exciting. If I have one slight criticism it's that you don't devote enough screen time to getting to know the riders, or their thoughts in the aftermath of the challenges. For all the seriousness of the competition for the finalists, from a storytelling perspective this format is effectively reality TV. If there's one thing reality TV is good at, it's making you care and root for the participants.
Crazy racing all round. How on earth do you expect to beat MVDP at 70kph, no chance!
They put in a good effort though 💪
How? Go 71kph, obviously!
MVDP fan here. But he was getting a lot of help keeping speed at 70km. The downhill was giving him a huge advantage vs the other three. Likely the route was picked for this reason.
@@nobalt MVDP would have beaten them on any course. Let’s not pretend these guys are in a class with him, they could maybe hang with him for a bit but he is a world class cyclist and the top pros cant always hang
@@danshort10 yeah i agree. But it still bugged me. No need to make it even easier for him..
Really good that there's more focus on the skills on the road in this year's ZA, you can clearly see same holes in some riders' games. We know they can do the watts already:)
More interesting races than the last year, it's a bit more difficult for non-sprinters in this type of races. I think the girls played badly knowing that Alex was the fastest. The guys couldn't do much better great control from MVDP
this shows perfectly that zwift does not prepare you for outdoors
Honestly, they didn't do so bad. The attack on the climb was circumstantial, one tried to keep it in their side of the road because of traffic as the other got wider. And the second, again because of traffic and having to keep the right lane offered a tighter line to negociate and with the oil involved, that appeared innevitable.
If you removed traffic from the equation, I believe those two incidents would not have happened.
This proves more about your ignorance than anything else.
Nah… they all have road experience it’s not like they have only every ridden Zwift. Skills can be taught. They are looking for diamonds in the rough
@Ryan Terence it Is not true.. It easier to fit a person than teach some skills.. A pro team can't teach technical skills.
@@GiorniInBianco a pro team shouldn’t need to be teaching technical skills. That’s what development teams are for, and most pros have been riding and racing since they were kids so have developed these skills over many years. That’s why Roglic is such a shit bike handler relative to other top pros.
Am I the only one impressed by how well all the non-English speakers speak English?
Pretty common in other countries to learn multiple languages in school, often English. Partially because English has become to some extent the default language of international business, I believe.
I work in the industry of English language education, yes it is huge in many countries. Non-natives learn English because it opens doors to employment and travel, but I think the biggest reason is the pervasiveness of English-language TV shows and movies. Like if you use RUclips, you will want to be able to understand English because of the content out there. I spoke to one guy from Saudi Arabia who spoke with a perfect British accent, he told me he was a terrible student but loved watching UK TV. In countries where foreign media is blocked or restricted, like China where I currently live, people's English is generally dreadful.
I am more impressed by the fact that there is no one candidate that doesn't speak English. What could be the reason?
You’re either bilingual, multilingual or a native English speaker 😂
Racing on open roads… surely someone must have realised that’s a bad idea 🤦🏻♀️
Part of racing though if they want to be a pro they have to do it no getting away from that however unfortunate the crashes are.
@@goonzjav Which part of being a pro involves racing on open roads smh 🤦♂️
@@goonzjav He means open to traffic
@@tomtownsend7955 my bad misunderstanding. Still wasnt traffic that caused their crashes though
@@goonzjav No but if a car had been coming the other way when Chiara crashed, she would have been seriously injured or worse… Oncoming traffic is not a risk in professional road racing.
Camera bike a massive help to attackers in the mens race
Could the same be said for lots of pro races? 👀
@@gcn yes they could but they have rules on how close they can be which is much further away than these bikes were (now being extended even further for next season). You can see from some of the trailing shots that when they attacked and dropped Lucas you could see how close the bike was. Favoured someone attacking and getting a draft
Definitely would have been a better race with Lucas out and Cooper in this race. Absolute passenger on the back, completely passive 🤦♂️
Wonder if he is saving his legs for the big one
He didn’t have the legs or the confidence since his crash it seems
Cooper
I watched Cooper last year and his return was not because of his performance this year. He needed to be the absolute best rider and he wasn't. Not even close to what he did last year.
Cooper did much better at the hill time trial the other day, and even with the bottle handoffs. One unremarkable but close crit on Zwift shouldn't have been enough to eliminate him IMO.
That was exciting and hard to watch. I’m glad everyone was ok. The men’s race was insane.
cant believe i discovered this video so late, such an interesting video idea and would love to see more in the future
Two crashes and another race next day? That's rough! Hell I would have called it quits after the first crash lol
GCN how hard can it be to secure a 4km course with some volunteers?
What do you mean by secure? The road is open.. some volunteers cant just block a road..
@@D0nKeY sure you can, just get some save the climate people over there. Worked wonders at the tour de France this year.
@@badsamaritansofficial6704 😂😂😂
@@D0nKeY LOL no. With a permit of course.
@@D0nKeY I’ve been on organized rides where police will make sure intersections are safe and riders can pass through unencumbered
Has GCN thought about having a GCN internal tour. All the GCN’s in different countries race against each other. Example GCN UK chooses a stage from tour of Britain, USA tour of California, France a stage from Tour de France… not over a week… But over a year… The winning GCN Nation could have the text of GCN in rainbow colours…. Races on Swift… Would be interesting to see which GCN country is the best…..
yay, its guess what time the show is on again!
very true 😂
For the women, I think Chiara will make it, she seems to have the most experience
She just showed that you can't learn bike handling on Zwift.
Imagine Pauliena as a pro to hurt herself for zwift race...its very bad...but alex...when she felt instead of complaining about her pain she ask if Pauliena is ok....that shows respect for her team mate.Cycling is a very dangerous sport...when accidents are not fake like in football ....I feel the pain of the girls and the boys they were crazy good chasing Matheu Van Der Poel who is a rocket.
Well put! Crashes are always a shame and Alex showed great understanding after the accident with Pauliena, signs of a great rider right there🙌 Everyone smashed it in this episode, tough racing throughout 💪
She cared about Pauliena. Too bad she didn't do the same with the first crash. She could have stopped and checked like the other riders did. basically everyone did, the cars, the riders.. everyone stopped then and there
@@D0nKeY you are right in one point of view, but think a little bit about the first accident, chiara hit her but she was so focused on the attack that she didn’t look back, the 3 riders who stoped they were actually stoped before and she continued without knowing chiara was in such a bad situation.it’s hard to say but imagine that all of them fight for a chance as pro so they attack like no tomorrow! In the second accident she made sure that pauliena is ok because she was thinking that was her fault without knowing about the oil spill.
@@D0nKeY it would have been dangerous to brake and turn instantly without looking as well honestly on public roads. If you watch it again she was there quite soon after.
@@badsamaritansofficial6704 She wasnt there soon after. that was another rider. She went on and kept riding to the finish on her own
Worst track choices ever especially for the man’s race
Andiamo Italia! Bandito and Ciara for the win!
Women’s race:
How can you have a short 4km race with a stop sign in it? You HAVE to stop at stop signs
You can’t have races where the DS says take it easy on descent either. How do you judge your ‘safe’ vs someone else’s? If they push it cos they’re a better handler and a job depends on it then of course the others will push it
Inevitable how these races could end up
Was the course not scouted in advance? I know these roads well
@@pantster9855 Exactly. Rubbish course for a race, was asking for trouble
@@danmartin9086 precisely. I know these roads, I live in Calp. How can you have a 4km race, which takes minutes to drive in a car and not scope out the route? Stop signs in one course, "so much oil I thought my car was leaking" in another. There's so many roads around there that get barely any traffic
Fighting against a full gas MVDP in a 3k race means there's no room to out-strategize him.
Kind of a dick move by MvdP, really. His team didn't learn much about the riders tactically. If he'd given them a fighting chance the team would have seen more, and if he lost, well, it's about as low stakes a race as he will ever be in again.
As a beginner in wathcing Bike Racing I actually learned something aobut bike racing tactics, besides that it was cool to watch. Nice format !
I wish everyone a speedy recovery 🥺 for the future - instead of expecting the girls and guys to have a ton of experience, how about teaching them and see how they adapt. Especially on women pro races the crashes could be so easily prevented but most women start later with cycling they simply dont have that much experience
Why let them race on open roads when they were going all out for something that might be life changing for them? Just asking for a crash…
Goddamn it hurt to see those ladies go down. Van der Poel was just being himself...fast. I can't even accelerate to 50km/h even if I had the gears on my mtb and yet these guys were just proving how much fun you can have on a real racebike when you have the power/stamina
Big advantage in Zwift: no crashes.
Big advantage to never get injured. Stay home all day, every day. Makes sense?
@@kevankerd86 I tried but I don't understand your comment.
The second crash looks like wheel lock up and not a slip on oil spill. I mean the back wheel is completely locked up and slips locked.
Did the organizers check road conditions before the women's race? Paulina broke her wrist. Isn't she a pro? If I were managing a pro team, I don't think it would be a good idea for one of my athletes to do something like this. What's the risk vs reward? And Ciara almost slammed her head into the side of that mountain. Goodness! Could've been much worse. Just my thoughts. Peace to all
Agreed. Wishing her a fast recovery.
This was a horror show to watch 🫣 - felt a lot of discomfort because of all the potential danger!
We also wish Pauliena a speedy recovery! Crashes are never nice to see. We checked the road conditions but this must of gone unnoticed or happened before the women took the corner. A very nasty and unfortunate accident.
I wonder if the pros have to sign a waiver or something because to be put out of a half season or so of training due to something like this can’t be something her team will be too happy about.
crazy to think with the first a crash a car could have just passed at the same time on the opposite of the road..
The women’s team are great to watch this year.
I would love to see Cooper than Lucas on this sprints.
I think it's not okay to race so hard on open streets. Maybe other car drivers can hit the racers (during the crashes). I think ZA and Canyon/Sram exceed a red line. This episode take the joy of the Zwift Academy away from me.
I'd love to see Chiara and Luca get it!
Omg this was so awesome 👏 I was at the edge of my seat the entire video…omg it was so good 👍💪🙏
Playing races in open roads? wtf?
Agree, really dangerous, sets a bad example.
Just finished ep 3. Good timing!
Perfect! What do you think?
Jasper bears a strong resemblance to Greg Van Avermaet
Yesterday MVDP won Milano-San Remo after chased by Wout, Pogacar and Ganna...i think Zwift academy guys did good
I’m surprised the coaches didn’t arrange a technical downhill to test their descending skills. There’s only one Thibut Pinot who can win with a slow descent.
Lucas is a Zwift racer, no skill outside but very fit inside. Even thought they have three guys it’s hard to beat MVDP 😂😂
His legs were gone was clear to see. Since the crash he hasn’t looked up for it it seems. Even with 5 they wouldn’t have beaten MVDP. One of if not the best cyclist in the world. How do 3 amateurs expect to beat him lol. Good try though.
At one point when he was behind it looked as he had given up.
@@internettalker1 he looks like he’s given up for the last 2 episodes
He’s actually a road rider
I’m surprised he’s still there to be honest, I thought he would have been the one to go on the last selection
What was the point in a 70km/hr roll along twisty public roads? Dangerous and didn’t prove anything
Surely someone should have road the course first to check for debris and oil before any race? Seems strange that wasn't the case to me.
In an open road you just need one car spilling oil after you check to invalidate your checks.
Always easier to say after something like that happens. I'm sure they will do it next time ;)
why are they racing 3km down the hill going 70km/h at least pick flat race ???
I'm not as near as competitive as this guys and girls but you're not racing for a Giro victory, if someone crash in my opinion you have to stop. We are humans before athletes, show respect. Everybody have different opinions but I didn't like that move from Alex. Personal opinion here.
Agree, could have potentially turned out nasty with Chiara heading for those rocks, very surprised Alex ploughed on (and obviously the team weren't bothered that she did).
@gcn When for this year? We're already 21st january :p
This was seriously stressful to watch. Seems so irresponsible to be racing that fast on open, narrow roads. Watching the men especially doing close racing at 70kph as we watch oncoming traffic fly by made me feel sick. Something as small as a touch on the wheel like in the women's race could have deadly consequences.
That is training and racing. It cant all be virtual!
Man, you musnt be racing in eu. Our road races are with open trafic
Have you seen Tour de France? Literally obstacles everywhere on every stage! Lol
What's the story with racing on open roads, crossing solid white lines etc? That girl could have fallen into on coming traffic
We want il bandito 🏆
Jesus people that was not good the route looked pretty sketchy anyway.. then you’ve got 3 girls full of adrenaline racing each other… that could of been so so bad
Don't do this with open roads! Imagine a touch of wheels that knocks Van der Poel into oncoming traffic!
Zwift racers, half the road available, pro contract on the line and you lose your world tour pro Pauline to a broken wrist. Stupid, risky and NOT neccessary!
Not good advertising for Zwift. Lost reputation points for me. Seriously looking at going to Rouvy now.
Bandito!
BANDITO BABEEEEEEEEEEE
@GCN ZWIFTACADEMY @ CANYON those crashes are on YOU.
It's your responsibility to keep those girls and boys safe.
YOU failed BIG TIME!!! You could have done this in a restricted area for example.
Actually makes me a bit mad, and sad for the riders competing 😞
hope they get well soon.
Terrible to see them crash! I feel very sorry for them......
I love the paint scheme on the women's bikes
Bij Alpecin wordt er precies serieus wat afgewed. :-D
It’s unbelievable how someone is rider of the day, having caused two crashes, this final definitely biased
Rewatched the first women's crash in slow mo.... Looks like Alex deviated, Chiara held her line. Alex's shoulder strikes Chiara's arm from behind. Yeah, maybe a stronger bike handler would have been able to save that, but if I were Chiara I'd be pretty cross. Rubbing is racing in a bunch sprint, but in a three-up attack? I would hope race commissaires would relegate Alex for that move.
Conversely, 2nd crash just looked like bad luck.
Interesting, in slow mo to me it looks like Alex has held the white line better than Chiara has held her own line.
Chiara did a strong pedal kick which takes her pretty severely to the left, into Alex, which caused the crash for me.
No, watch it again. Chiara was drifting across and Alex was squeezing through the gap between Chiara and the road/median line. Probably neither at fault, with front rider supposed to hold her line and overtaking rider supposed to go around front rider
Chiara drifted maybe 70cm to Alex's 30cm. It could have been even worse if the crash occurred meters earlier as Chiara very nearly slid into two Canyon-SRAM pros who were waiting near the finish line. As Magnus Backstedt says, this is purely a racing incident given the circumstances. Chiara was drifting to her left as the road started to curve to the left and wasn't aware Alex had pulled alongside.
It's an unfortunate accident really. But I'd side more with Chiara. Alex come from behind and her elbow knocked into the back of Chiara's, pulling it to the side causing the bars to turn. Alex barely moved off line though so I wouldn't say it was too bad. Just really accidental.
My first crash on a descent (1978) happened because of the paint stripe. The reflective paint on roadways has glass beads and are slick. Alex looked like she was riding the paint when she lost traction. Anyhow, a word of caution to riders avoid the paint.
If you play the replay she's in the middle of the road. It is that her back wheel completely locked up and slided locked. It's very possible that she applied the brakes too hard.
In the first women's crash (if you freeze frame it) both riders moved towards each other, no one rider was at fault, they both deviated off their lines.
Jasper's bike on the trainer is such a beautiful Ridley. Good to see Belgian pride.
A fabulous series… big respect to them all.. 👏👏👏
That oil-slick excuse is obvious. Alex needs to work on her handling skills.
Great stuff! Keep the rubber side down guys!!!!!
That route was a very bad choice, it proved totally nothing and it was dangerous in the traffic 👎. All the drama wasn't fail of the riders, but the guy who picked the track.
It's not a tv show. It's cycling training. Cyclists train on open roads. btw none of the crashes had anything to do with other traffic.
The first crash has everything to do with the bike handling…. Her balance on the bike was quite forward so minor contact knocked her off balance. Nothing to do with the road conditions?
It's what happens when you spend too much time on zwift not enough outside
@@jacklalalaful exactly.. People forget how to ride
@jacklalalaful Or maybe you spend too much time not taking any risks. I mean, it's easy to bust on her but where were you? Not there.
Why did women and men have different route? I understand oil slick couldn’t have been avoided but women’s route seemed a fair bit more technical and if they’d had the same route as men then they wouldn’t have encountered it, and probably not had the same sort of corner that chiara came a cropper on…
That’s a scary crash 😰
They got rid of the wrong Australian
great.... great.... but what about closing the roads for the race?? c'mon guys, it's all about safety
Diesel on the road . That’s had a lot of motorcyclist off . May as well have been ice . Nasty
No one else lost traction there. There’s was no oil
Ik ga mijn portefeuille bovenhalen 😂
In the crash between Alex and Chiara you can see Chiara divert from her line to the left, Alex is not looking ahead and follows her line watching her own front weel as it seems and rides against Chiara's arm. Lesson to be learned here is that you should always look ahead, no matter how fast you're going and how hard the effort. I think this is one of the risks of indoor biking were you don't have to look, but open roads are a dangerous place. Stay save everyone.
ironically in real world racing, which the winner would be doing next year it would be Chiara who is penalised, as you said she deviated from her line once the print has started
@@pantster9855 Wrong. Chiara barely moved. Alex had her head down and wasn't even looking where she was going. If you're going to sprint past someone, you have to not run into them, which requires looking, which she wasn't. Plus Chiara drifted a little , Alex didn't avoid her because she had her head down. Just bad riding by Alex.
@@notreally2406 Chiara moved when she was 'cranking' to start her sprint. Alex maintained her line, Chiara started cranking hard which caused the first contact, there's a flinch reaction from her and you can then see that bursts her tyre/tubeless. Alex moved "4ft" from behind her and then had the line relative to the centreline of the road.
This happens every day in every sprint finish, much worse than this and they stay up
@@pantster9855 Watch it again. Alex runs into Chiara...her fault 100%.
Your job when passing someone is to NOT HIT THEM, even if they are wavering a little, because everyone wavers a little in a sprint. 100% Alex's fault.
@@notreally2406 in a humanitarian sense yes, but from a racing sense actually no. Once a sprint commences your responsibility is to MAINTAIN YOUR LINE. "wavers a little" is not an excuse for someone to "waver a little", you don't do that
dang man the ladies had lucks of bad luck on their course this episode!!
The team chose that men's course for a reason, to make it close and give vdp a good chance. It would be very difficult to beat him on such a short fast run. I think they were a bit timid though, they should have been a bit quicker with the 1-2s straight from the start but the rider behind took too long to go. But Lucas pretty much ruined it for the others. He really needed to pull his way and come over the top a few times, the move doesn't even have to stick just getting the 1-2-3 going quickly, but he just can't hold the wheels. He should have gone instead of Cooper. To me he's clearly the weaker rider but I guess the judges thought Cooper has had his chance twice now. It was clearly hard and Luca and jasper done well with what they could do. The individual mens race was timid too, Luca should have gone straight from the off and really pushed jasper hard. If he's still on the wheel towards the end, back off and sit behind him, they should have ignored Lucas completely but kept looking back. Luca will win tomorrow (and probably place top 10 on Strava) and win overall most likely, japser is very good too but not the same type of rider. I think they'd rather have a Luca type climber as with Jay Vine. Luca especially looks so calm and fit after the races, he's definitely the fittest guy with the best potential. Hope the girls are OK, tough crashes. Them roads can be very slippery in Spain, and that bend looked fast, quite easy to overcook and tap the brakes on an outside bend. 1st crash was total accident really.
Now it is completely clear who GCN and the rest of the team are rooting for. Why a grand finale when everything is set up for Alex.
Knocking down a rival and rushing to victory - that's true sportsmanship. She really is the girl of the day. The girl who stopped to help instead of winning a safe second place might be kicked out.
Unfair comment there. If you watch again without bias, you'll see that Alex held her line, and couldn't move over any further to the left as the camera bike was there and wasn't accelerating. Racing incident
@@marccale9890 I'm sorry but no. Alex deviated and went in on Chiara from behind. She is in the wrong there
@@marccale9890 I don't think that Alex did it on purpose, but the problem is that the race was not stopped, that Alex simply continued towards the finish line and in the end was declared the girl of the day. To me it looks a bit like some games in ancient Rome.
@@marccale9890 By the way, do you think Chiara would have been declared the winner if she had continued the race after Pauliena and Alex fell?
@@gporbea interesting question! It does seem that although this show is a brilliant idea, as it gets bigger the planning needs to improve. For a start, it does seem that the judges have been put in a tricky position. They've allowed a 37 year old into the final, who happens to be one of the favourites to win...but do they want to invest time and money into someone who realistically has a limited career as a pro. Also, running races on roads with traffic and oil slicks wasn't ideal circumstances for inexperienced racers.
You deserve multiple traffic tickets.
Absolutely. Then we want car drivers to respect us. They should have picked a segment closed to traffic.
Even in non- competitives events there are traffic restrictions, police, traffic agents, civil protection and multiple permits and conditions that must be met. What is a motorcycle doing with 2 passengers, the one behind standing with a camera, driving in the opposite direction without restriction or traffic agents helping? And why put those kids at so much risk?
Plenty of amateur gran fondos in Europe take place on closed roads too. And they would really only need to secure a short segment here
Don’t get me wrong. GCN I love you guys! But racing on open roads like that. Dangerous, and not the best message to pass to younger cyclists.
Love Si's little jokes, not sure anyone else appreciates it, but I do mate - I've got your back!
I think they want Alex to win
Alex has been great 🙌 Who do you think deserves the contract?
@@gcn I'm not that sure about that. I mean she's great but I think she has accountability for the falls, at least for the first one. Chiara also performed well, but she is too old and so they don't want to invest in her because she would have a short career IMHO
@@marcogaravagno7577 Yeah, she literally rode into the other rider. Gladly no one got seriously injured in the first crash but it's very poor bike handling on her part.
@@godspeed2218 Racing incident, as Magnus said. Everything has to be a blame game these days though...
It's going to be tough to pull on the bars with a fractured wrist.
At one point, one of the girls came within feet of hitting a passing car
This is for everyone blaming Alex for two crashes; Stop. No one is at fault for the first crash. As Magnus Backstedt explains, it was a racing incident. If we scrutinize the footage, Alex actually drifted significantly less than Chiara. And if you are skeptical about the claims of an oil slick causing the second crash, then check out that massive black streak on the road at 33:48. Sheesh.
Absolutely. Most commenting on here can't seem understand that s*** happens
No. You stop. You're wrong.
@@noheroicsintosaintedevotep6265 Yes they can. This was bad, head-down riding. She was at fault for hinting the rider in front of her.
@@notreally2406 you’ve never pinned on a number and it shows
I very much doubt there was any oil on that corner.
Gonna bet on Luca for the hill climb
Was really surprised by how close the guys came with the sprint against MvdP. But beyond that, I think it's absurd of organizing this on open roads with traffic. Next year, please find a closed off section or track to organize your competition, please!
