Fairchild Botanic Garden Tour Q2 2018 - Plant One On Me - Ep 065

- Okay, this episode is for all the Plant Nerds out there with a capital “P” and “N”. This behind-the-scenes tour with Chad Husby, Botanical Horticulturist at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens is nearly 30 minutes (yes, I said a half hour) of pure plant palaver. Husby drops knowledge bombs like trees drop leaves in Autumn and we highlight over 30 plant species, (more than 1 per minute!), which should keep you hooked to the screen.
I should also say that I’m not in frame this time around b/c I was totally a one-woman show on this interview, so you’ll hear me chiming in off camera. I could have easily turned this into a 3-part episode-as Chad took me through well over a hundred species-but decided to keep this brief but meaty, particularly for all the folks who INSIST that I must have longer episodes (Believe me, you’re in the minority)!
Alright, hope this satisfies your plant urges!
Oh, and this episode is lovingly produced by Michael Chu-A-Kong, Founder of The Rloveution, who thoughtfully gave to my Kickstarter for How to Make a Plant Love You: Houseplant Masterclass.

Chad Husby: *shows plant for the camera*
Me: *eyeing the plant in the background, wondering what that one is.*
Thank you again soon Summer, great video.
Awe I loved this video! I grew up in Miami... now living in NC. I miss this place so much.
Coming back after having viewed this before. Thank you so much for making these videos. I’m sure it’s a lot of work. I want to hear more about the Million Orchid project and perhaps some pictures of the installed plants if there are any yet.
I volunteered at the nursery for about a year. Such amazing plants from all around the world.
I suggested that they do a google thing like the museums, especially in the conservatories. That would be awesome. Loved this video. Thanks.
Very interesting, I just love the tropical gardens, would love to tour them ... Summer you really have a great job.
Loved this episode! I want to make a lil plushie version of the Fairchild rep that was showing Summer around. He's absolutely adorable!
This is the best type of video 👍🏼
Yes I enjoyed this video very much plus he has plants 🌱 from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 with is where I live this made me very happy 😊, thanks for sharing

Yet another awesome tour. Thanks!
10:53 in Indonesia, that plant called by "sirih merah" (Maybe Piper ornatum (?));
"Sirih" means "Piper betle", "merah" means "red".
Sometimes the striped colored by red, sometimes white, sometimes dissapear. Shade is one of the factors.
:-DD
Amazing tour and so many species!
Thank you so much for all the hard work put into these videos!
thank you for watching!
Loved the tour thanks for sharing.
I live in Southwest Florida, can't wait to get over to Miami and visit The Fairchild. All that Selaginella, be still my beating heart!
I agree, and I caught a glimpse of a beautiful Birds Nest fern as well.
Just ordered your book 💚🌿
Next I plan to do your online class 🥰
I love your videos & instagram 🌹
I like the opening music. Funny synth arpeggios on the the tonic and subdominant.
Gloriosums looking FANTASTIC
“…escaped and behaved badly…” Chad is such a sweetie🌱
No green overalls? Who are you and what have you done with Summer Rayne???
Wonderful video! It was like a Plant Nerd union meeting. :)
I was behind the camera this time! That's what happens when you lose your cameraperson!
Summer Rayne Oakes oh no cameraperson overboard! I think for this particular episode you going behind the camera was a happy accident. It made for a more immersive experience and really showcased the beautiful lush surroundings. Hey if Sir Alexander Fleming had done his dishes we would never have gotten Penicillin! 😉👍
Summer Rayne Oakes 🌷🌱🌲🌳 Ohhh you have inspiré me and my friends💫💫💨👏👏👏
That's her super heroine costume even Superman had an alter ego in a suit.
Im 27 n i thinks its so funny when i tell people i have 150 plants in diff pots at my house they look at me like im crazy lol but i fell like its not that manny even lol
Oh no, now you went and done it everybody will want to see a video on RUclips of your plants!
You should wear that vibrant blue more often. It really goes well with your skin tone etc. I'm just discovering your youtube channel and I'm overdosing on all the info, plants, etc. I am loving it! I grew up in the VA/NC Blue Ridge Mts. I've lived in Honduras, Philippines, Japan, Korea. Now I live in the far west Texas desert outside of Big Bend National Park. I enjoy the diversity of plant life here also and have a small green house. But all the lushness of the plants your showing is wonderful since I miss the humidity, environment of the east coast mountains. That was a wonderful video of the Cactus man btw.
Loved the video!
That pinaga with the new red leaf coming on is beautiful
I've been to Fairchild on cycad research. They were very eager to work with scientists.
What a calming man.
That was awesome!
Great video!!!!. Inspires me for a road trip
beautiful!
Fantastic. Thank you.
My pleasure
Wonderful video. I enjoyed it! N i really loved the microsorum thailancium fern, i have 7 of them but very difficult to grow. Very slow grower. It would be great if you can make a video on growing these, asking experts
My another favourite.
I just love you & your videos
So fascinating
Fantastic video! It was good hearing about the various plants from the professional, I would have just seen some miscellaneous palms and not realised anything special about individual ones.
agreed. He's super informed.
Thanks alot for sharing
Cheers
Lovely 😊
So interesting! Thanks
Man, chad is really daddy material 😳 we all need some plant daddys 😩
Loved
Are spores the same thing as seeds? Great tour, many unusual species!
Great vid loved it .. peace out

Nice collection
Hallo....how are you....terima kasih sy sudah menunggu videonya....i'm happy...
Someone please tell me the name of the pink leafed plant at 5:07. It looks like the leaves of my cebu blue but pink and Im all about it.
Saya sangat mencintai keindahan alam yg salah satunya adalah tumbuhan yg mana untuk terapi tersendiri
Awesome field trip Summer Rayne. Thank you 💚🌿
i like this guy
Is that a pink maidenhair fern?? I was waiting for someone to say something about it I have never seen anything like that
Everybody was too busy gathering around that fluorescent blue metal plant with their mouths wide open and their jaws hitting the floor!
👍👍
👍
A little bit of a cop out answer to the "How do you know you didn't buy the last one?" question. I know that even the best botanical garden collectors will do that..they will also smuggle seeds too! Its either take now or never get a chance again is their thinking.
Is there a part two??? 😥
Aaron Davila we can hope!!!
I wouldn't mind a part 3 and 4 also. =D
There were hundreds of plants..... I can revisit a part 2 in the future, but I've been invited back to see more (Aka, which means you will see more!)
Why is Summer always interviewing so many cute guys ?
occupational perk
The comments in this interview are priceless : D .. 14:50
I'm surprised Summer didn't ask if she could bring Kippy her chicken next time to run around in there.
the cacti have little scarfs :-)))
He's name is Adam
I love to eat the fruit of salacca magnifica. The taste is sweet and sour
Now I have to find me one of those microsorum thailandicum iridescent beauties.
I know right? Don't consider that one, if there was any way of it going out of there Summer got it!
Lol, the ladies who videobomb halfway thru
You mean the annoying yelling wouldn't be quiet ones yeah we seen them
They love hybrids ughhhhh
all that latin, it's kinda sexy hahaha thanks for sharing!
omg that moment where you check Summer's channel and she's in my backyard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
slkfglkdsfjhglksdjfhglksdjfhg EXCITED in Miami! love the Gardens!
I never wanted this tour to end. I had such a horticultural boner for every specimen. And I yipped with joy when I saw the Calathea musaica 'Network' as I've just gotten a beautiful specimen myself!
might be one of the funniest testimonials... "Horticultural boner" .... going to write that one down in the "keeper" book! ;)
Feel free to use my lavish etymology! I'm glad that it amused you!
Very cool video but did not feel like 27 minutes at all, felt more like 8 or 10.
time flies when viewing plants!
It was all that plant produced oxygen it was just too much for us.
3:28
"There've been a few plants escape-"
Me: oh plants escape...wait..wha-..how?
reproduced and had offspring develop outside an enclosure ;)
Didn’t think I’d find a Pepe here lmao
How many times does this man blink in a day
Lol... 13:24
Would somebody please buy that man a hamburger he talked about what he had to do in a week no wonder he's so thin he worked himself to death. In Japan they talked about people renting a bed in like a wall of pods for them to just sleep in. I can't wait till they do that here I'd totally get me a bed to sleep there at night. And hey, you guys form a line, everybody get behind me no cutting in line!
Labisia is a medicinal plant. And is used by women.
