During our trip to the Missouri Botanical Garden, we had a chance to speak with the King of Aroids-Dr. Tom Croat. There, we asked the expert himself, to help us elucidate how we may be able to tell apart tricky aroids, such as Epipremnum, Monstera, Rhaphidophora, and Scindapsus. The answers aren't as straightforward as we thought!
A MUST WATCH for those who consider themselves true plant nerds or aspiring plant nerds.

I love acquiring a higher plant vocabulary watching these videos. His succinct way was very easy to understand. Please have more people like this gentleman on I found it quite entertaining and educational. Going back in to watch it for a second time now. Notepad ready for vocabulary! 💚💚💚
Same!!! I loved this content and learned so much, I'm glad I'm not the only one that was pausing for notes 😂
He's no ordinary gentleman. He's the one who discovered and named Philodendron Patricea after his wife!
A hundred time more of this please. My mind was blown time and time again while watching this video. As an amateur plant nerd, this is the type of content I crave the most. Thanks for creating it, and sharing it with us.
I feel like my gray matters will explode while watching but still, I will persist.
loving this much more scientificly detailed video. its much much harder to find videos like this on the internet than to find a casual green house tour. would love to see more talks like this with Dr. Croat
Mr.Croat is a genuine walking and talking encyclopedia with a great sense of humor. Thank you very much 😊🌽🫒🌳🪴🌼🌸🌴🏵
Interview with a legend! You both made everything so understandable, such a fascinating discussion! 🌱
Lolol 😂 "Do you know how much this would go for on ebay? " yass.
Dr. Croat would absolutely clean up in a round of Plant Jeopardy. Really enjoyed this very nerdy episode. I learned so much and have so much more to learn.
That was incredibly thought-provoking! With his life's work Dr Croat has certainly delved deep into the fundamental building blocks of plants. From your conversations with him it seems that, at a certain level of microscopic analysis, the classification of plants into their 'correct' binomial categories can easily become dauntingly labyrinthine! The topics raised get me interested in how plants have evolved over millennia, slowly adapting/adjusting to their changing climatic environments. Returning a little more to the domestic, I now don't know whether I have a Monstera adansonii or M. epipremnoides, as it's still quite juvenile with only minimal fenestrations (time will tell!).
I can listen to Summer interviewing Mr Croat for hours, eventho I don't't understand the scientific terms they throw in the conversation 😂
Mhmm
I’ve literally been waiting everyday for someone to make a video with this amazing man!
Joey over at Crime pays but botany doesn’t just did an interview with him too. Thats what brought me here 🙏. Cool to see him in person!
Thank you Summer Rayne for getting this! Thank YOU Dr Croat for educating us even if it is just scratching the surface of your knowledge! I looked specifically for videos of you Dr Croat after the last video of Summer Rayne at your greenhouses - few videos of you. 😐 So this is great! Just wish I could listen to you and Collette , or even help out. My other half was a volcanologist who'd spent parts of the 70s and 80s working in Central & South America - oh the stories he had to tell! I suspect you, Dr Croats are as much the storyteller when in your millue! Thank you both again!!!!
Loved this. Please do more 'plant nerd' videos. I know they're not for everyone but I'm studying horticulture and they're just what I need at the moment :)
I just love getting a glimpse into the depth of scientific research that I'm not familiar with. Not knowing a lot about botany as an average houseplant enthusiast this discussion was so interesting. There's just so much to know out there about our world!
LOL I was counting Summer's Mmm-Hmmm's when Dr.Croat got too technical for me! But I did learn and enjoy! JESUS ROCKS!!
I loved the depth in which you were both able to speak about botany/taxonomy and, more generally, the many nuances within plant identification. I'm interested in what you discussed but I also studied something completely different in school- I often feel out of my depth when learning about plants and I question my ability to identify good source material. It's difficult to parse (online) information despite my desire to become better informed. That's all to say that I greatly enjoy this sort of content and thank you a lot for creating it!
Dr. Tom's dropping so much wisdom on us! Thank you!
Great topic!! Who ever was doing the filming did a fantastic job captivating important points, moving about to show more details, etc.
I loved the discussions with Dr. Croat. Good job!!
I just gotta point this out cause it makes me smile every time. The way you all say rhaphidophora is my favorite!! Love these videos; thanks for sharing all the knowledge!
Tom sponsored our aroid club meeting several years ago, now that was a great time.
I understood only half of what Dr. Croat was talking about, tops! 😂😅 But I just love his enthusiasm! What a great man! ❤🌱🌳🥰
This video was great! Even though I’m not a botanist, I love hearing about the cellular diversity. Especially from a true expert like Tom. Thanks for this info!
Thank YOU Dr Croat for educating us
This is incredible! The info I pick up every single time from your channel especially with your garden tours and interviews with reputable people in the industry is invaluable and is what I love the most from watching your channel. Here, we go beyond the aesthetics and rarity of plants, moreso truly develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of plants and of our nature. I wish you can do another 365 days with all the new species that made it into the houseplant world, and even those we can readily see the moment we step out of our house. ;) More power to you!
There is so much information jam packed into this episode, thank you for making it available to us!
Wow!
Thank you so much for this interview. Dr. Croat is so incredibly knowledgeable, I feel like I understood half of what was said and still doubled my knowledge on Aroids!
Would have loved if you had asked Emily Coletti some do's and dont's in the maintenance of these aroids, maybe even some tips.
Summer…. Summer. Homie.
Hands down one of my favorite episodes that I’ve seen on this channel. I watch pretty much everything you’ve put out in the last couple of years. I SO appreciated having the opportunity to hear from the experts in their fields and learn a bit about what’s happening at the scholarly level. (I also REALLY enjoy the botanical garden tours). You rock! Thanks!!!
Such a great episode! Loved the more in-depth conversation about plant sciences and the root of characteristics. Very nice way to separate from the typical house plant collection topics. Good job yall!
Always interested to know extra about plants on any level. Thank you for providing these vids Summer! Nature always proves itself to be amazing!
I loved listening to this Summer! I’m teaching a plant science class this semester and it as great hearing some of the vocabulary we’ve used!
Loved the topic of natural hybrids, ploidy and aneuploidism. It’s actually really common in orchid hybridization as well-but also including limitations of chromosome size. Really loved the technical nature of this-we as a hobby need more technical conversations “made simple” just like the two of you have done in this video. So great!
This was great!
I loved the in depth technical info I usually never get hear spoken aloud. Thank you!
Yesss! New series - nerd out with me!
Loved this, saving, sharing whenever it's appropriate.
Thank you for such an informative, deep dive treasure of an episode with Dr. Croat! I don't know him, but I appreciate all the wisdom generously shared.
i really love those educational ones so much! feels like sitting back in university and getting to know sooo much. I really like how you just listen and but in here and there a question. really a good one!
I love this kind of videos Summer! Thank you so much and please keep this level of content! Your channel is my favorite 😍.
Hello! Greetings from Ohio! Thank you for all the inspiration you give to your viewers and I'm one of them.
I loved the depth of this episode! More, please!
Wow! Flower knowledge times 2!!Wonderful to listen to Dr. Croat! Thanks Summer! I’m ready to see the MO Botanical Center!
This was a very pleasant surprise on the channel! I sometimes watch these videos leisurely before going to bed but this was a lot more engaging than what Ive gotten used to coming from this channel and I'd watch this type of ''under the skin'' content every day! Even though I do know some botany, I can't always put the proper words on my observations; for example how I could tell that an Anthurium's leaf nervation had something very characteristic to it that allows me to distinguish it from other genus but I couldn't exactly pinpoint and name it before watching this video. I'm really hoping for more videos like this! Please, bring back botany!
It was a pleasure to follow and listen to you guys. I love this content!
I loved it. Will watch again (and maybe again) to let more sink in.
This is one of my favorite episodes ever!!!! Super informative!!! ❤❤❤❤
This is a great video! I’d love more like these!
Always learn a lot from your videos, Summer. Thank you ♡
Your videos keep me sane.Thank you.
this is just an outer slice of knowledge yet it's a ton of informations!!
thanks summer and Dr. Tom croat
I already KNOW this video will be GRAND to watch - yahoo!
Something to chill to... on rainy humid evening in SG
Incredible interview. So much knowledge will watch again.
Wow, that was cool. Learned a lot more and inspired to learn even more by following up on what was discussed. Plants, complicated and varied in their many forms, and so much to learn.
Absolutely loved this style of video, and I loved the vocabulary pop-ups so any terms I didn't know were well presented for my understandin
Thank you so much for making these videos and sharing!
Love it everything was well described and I've definitely gained some valuable knowledge thanks for another great video
Interesting topic! Thank you for making this content for us. 💚
Such a great video !
Very informative like always.
I followed along the best I could, I'm sure I gleaned something new out of it! It was very interesting, and I enjoyed watching and listening to everything, even if I didn't understand it all! Todd
Thanks so much for featuring MoBot! As a Missourian this is exciting to see. MoBot has always had my heart!
I learned so much in this series, THANK YOU!
This was absolutely amazing. Thank you!!
very interesting I love these in depth information videos thanks Summer
Tom Croat is a whizz of a taxonomist. He bridged the divide between morphology and molecular effortlessly.
I know a lot of folks who envy his remarkable prowess.
I LOVE this video and learning about these things. Thanks you guys!
I really love this vid, its just so informative, I really learned a lot
Love it. That was amazing. Didn't understand lots of the language. But in practice absolutely fascinating. Im 98% orchid grower, oh my
That was a fantastic watch!

So informative. I’m happy I found your channel.
Yes! it's been amazing!! It's so interesting and professional and abarcative and and and! So very enjoyable and inspiring! 💚
After watching this video, people now becoming an instant botanist!
Thank you for this interview! Changing of plant names has been frustrating to me BUT now I know why that happens; science at a more granular level is on the March! 👍🏻 So informative!
This was so informative and fun!! I wish I could travel around and gather that much information!!
Such an information filled episode. Thank you x 100
Love this video, more please.
As a botany major it was heaven!
Really valued the plant nerd talk. High information density! More of that if possible :)
Loved the technical information.
Awesome! I’ve watched this 20 times.
Great video! I enjoyed the challenge of hearing/ learning new plant vocabulary. The inserted definitions, photos were very helpful. Inspired me to study botany in my next life. For now will visit my city’s conservatory.
Fabulous episode, I'd love to see more videos involving detailed botany!
I absolutely loved this!
These tours are awesome

Fascinating! And dense!

Love this episode!
Loved it!
I love in-depth discussions on botany even if i am just a houseplant parent.
Love talks with Tom! Although sometimes I have to go and look up words afterwards 😂
I loved that I definitely could keep up make me want to go on an expedition
Yes. More like this, please. 🙂
Love this!
An incredible video with one of the greatest minds of the Araceae world. It was so fascinating to hear them being spoken about at this in depth, scientific level. I would love if there could be a follow up video at maybe a more hobbyist friendly level that went through the very literal morphological differences of the family, say for example Alocasia vs. Xanthosoma, and/or possibly differences within the same genus (such as Anthurium that was lightly touched on at the beginning of the video), as that is what I was hoping for from reading the title. Nevertheless a great interview that I have garnered much new knowledge from 🌱✨
So detailed my mind almost exploded. 😅 Very technical i love it. Love this episode!
Most of that was over my head, but what I did understand was very interesting ☃️❄️💚🙃
