I was ten at the time of Eurovision 1988 and I remember me and my mom hoping for a Swiss win. It was such a close race at the end of the voting and we were so thrilled when Céline won. "Ne partez pas sans moi" is still my favourite song of all time, even if I've heard it a billion times over the years. It was the reason that I learned French at school and that I started to love Switzerland, years before I got the chance to visit it. I've followed Céline's career since 1988 and I'm kinda proud that I "discovered" her years before she became a world star!

I guess the answer was, just like today, sometimes the selections reach out and take singers that are not linked to the country they are singing for, just like sportsmen are not necessarily from the country they were born in. Switzerland most (or more) recently came closest to winning with "Cool Vibes" with a group from Eastern Europe, although to be honest the country has become a bit of a haven for the population that in a way they were representing a big chunk of Swiss residents. So bottom line, they chose her to represent Switzerland for some reason (cause she was a great singer?).

One of the reason why she doesn't sing this song anymore is probably because this song wasn't a commercially success despite being a Eurovision winning song, it's one of the very few Celine Dion song that was a flop so I think she just wanted to forget about it anyway. I believe it would cost them (the EBU) quite a fortune to invite her back to the contest as a special guest and perform so I don't think they would spend that much money on that, even though it's pretty evidence that they want to bring her back to Eurovision so badly since they keep mentioning her every year lol. But I also think that anything can happen, because they were able to have Justin Timberlake and Madonna as guests in recent years and they finally had 1/4 of the ABBA to sent a special video messege in 2020 so yeah, anything can happen.
Well, she did make a special appearance in I believe the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest in the form of a video. It was a pleasant surprise to see Celine at the height of her popularity making an appearance in Eurovision, but I would like to see her again in the upcoming newer contests too.

Back in the day Eurovision was packed with great singers. You definitely should look up some more. One of my favourites was Matt Monro (Frank Sintra called Monro the only limey that could sing). There's still much good singing! Just not always winning. Btw, the best vocals I can recall from the last 10 years was 2009 for Iceland by Johanna. Her singing was pure perfection. And the backing vocals were perfect too. By far the best live. All that could be said to be missing for giving ultra-shivers was a really miraculously coloured voice such as Dion's. Why is it whenever people look back on Eurovision greatest songs, they always miss out Celine? People mention Abba a lot but Celine is just as big of an act as them!
Partly because it is easy for people who aren't fans for people to either forget or not know that Celine sang in Eurovision because she is Canadian (only the composers of this song were from Switzerland). Also this song was not that much of a commercial seller compared to the songs she released in the 90's. Sadly her French songs dont get the deserved attention outside of French-speaking territories.

First time I saw this I just knew this girl or woman rather was one of a kind. Barbra was amazing but this voice is one you hear just once in a lifetime if you are lucky. Celine Dion is the greatest singer I have ever heard in my life. No one has ever even come close to hitting a note with the verocity..passion and stamina she has. There are other musicians I like better but when it comes down to the voice ...no one can top it.

At 61 I have only recently become truly aware of Celine Dion's amazing story. She sang this moving song, with its highly original subject matter, with such conviction, no doubt fuelled by her having clinched victory so narrowly in the final round of votes. Her voice and overall presentation are outstanding. Once again a luscious French-language song triumphed; I am reminded of "Un Banc, Un Arbre, Une Rue" (1971), "Apres Toi" (1972) and "Tu Te Reconnaitras" (1973) amongst others.

i wasn't born in 1988 ehhh but at first when I heard this song I couldn't believe it was a winner's hit but now I realise that people were actually voting for her voice and charizma :) and the song is not that bad anyway but it was just Celine and her not-attractive dress... that's the meaning of Eurovision- we have to vote for music, for passion, not for the special effects or the circus on the stage :) she's 20 years old in this video, and now she's 46 what a great career she's got to :) Bravo Celine! Btw, the best vocals I can recall from the last 10 years was 2009 for Iceland by Johanna. Her singing was pure perfection. And the backing vocals were perfect too. By far the best live.
All that could be said to be missing for giving ultra-shivers was a really miraculously coloured voice such as Dion's. But...anyway...come on ...she's fucking CELINE DION! You can't expect THAT to happen twice.

Why is it whenever people look back on Eurovision greatest songs, they always miss out Celine? People mention Abba a lot but Celine is just as big of an act as them!
Partly because it is easy for people who aren't fans for people to either forget or not know that Celine sang in Eurovision because she is Canadian (only the composers of this song were from Switzerland). Also this song was not that much of a commercial seller compared to the songs she released in the 90's. Sadly her French songs dont get the deserved attention outside of French-speaking territories.
Eurovision had many big acts , Celine Dion was just one among several ... ABBA is mention a lot because they became the greatest band of all time , among other reasons.

First time I saw this I just knew this girl or woman rather was one of a kind. Barbra was amazing but this voice is one you hear just once in a lifetime if you are lucky. Celine Dion is the greatest singer I have ever heard in my life. No one has ever even come close to hitting a note with the verocity..passion and stamina she has. There are other musicians I like better but when it comes down to the voice ...no one can top it.
For me, she has the best voice by light years, but people/women singing in perfect harmony in fantastic energetic songs (see “The Mamas on Spotify for reference) they barely beat Celine

I’m a really big fan of Celine Dion; and I must admit, I never even knew she had participated in Eurovision, let alone won it.

At 61 I have only recently become truly aware of Celine Dion's amazing story. She sang this moving song, with its highly original subject matter, with such conviction, no doubt fuelled by her having clinched victory so narrowly in the final round of votes. Her voice and overall presentation are outstanding. Once again a luscious French-language song triumphed; I am reminded of "Un Banc, Un Arbre, Une Rue" (1971), "Apres Toi" (1972) and "Tu Te Reconnaitras" (1973) amongst others.

I notice people in the comments are commenting about how her costume is a deal breaker. Okay, I have to admit is kind of off style. But, who cares what she is wearing. Isn't being a singer about people's voice? I don't get how in this generation, you have to be pretty and good at singing to be a singer. That doesn't make sense. Singing is about people's voice! What you look like wouldn't matter if people didn't care! It's not about loving the person or wanting to marry that person, it's about loving their music!
