    Hi Ben, Hope you recover fully soon. My grandfather went through the first world war and had several bullet and shrapnel wounds. Despite being pretty tough he couldn't get over the fear of getting a hernia operation and he suffered for years! Well done for overcoming any fears you may have had and as you would say 'getting it done'

    I got the mesh and have had no issues with it. For me there was absolutely no other choice as I had my first hernia during birth where it was properly stitched and lasted 45 years.
    Normally, if you relapse (which was always going to happen, as a hernia at birth leaves a wound that during growth will weaken) the only proper alternative is the mesh.
    Anyways... hope you're fine and up and RUNNING real soon!

    I may have to have a hernia repair. If so, it would be my 8 surgery. I’ve had 10 hernias. Not sure why this keeps happening. I know extreme weight loss can have an effect on that. I’ve lost 60 pounds in just under a year. I’ve been training for a half marathon. Today I went for a 10 mile run as part of my training. That’s when I felt it. During my cool down walk. How long was it before you started running again ? Enjoy the content. 👍

    Hi Ben, for this month I have set PB in Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5 km. I've joined virtual runs and during every run I treat it as a time trial reason why I've beaten my previous PB. Although they were not as fast as other runners but it was quite fulfilling:
    42.2km (3:38:32)
    21.1km (1:30:14)
    10 km (39.43)
    5 km (18:46).

    I found out I had a small Epigastric hernia, about 1cm above my belly button, in October 2021. I was really worried when I found out and stopped all exercise, tough for me as I love running and the gym. I was in no pain and you couldn’t see anything. I was advised to have a small op to fix it but the thought of an op, even a routine op like this, freaked me out, especially having a general anaesthetic. Anyway I decided to leave it, still not exercising but by January this year, not doing exercise had really got to me and so started to run again, which made me feel so much better. It’s now March and there has been absolutely no change in the hernia, no pain, nothing visible and I feel great. My dilemma is still whether to get it fixed or just leave it and get on with my normal exercise routine and get back to the gym, which I miss! Part of me feels that if it hasn’t changed then why put my body through an operation.
    Any thoughts, feedback would be so welcome everyone.

    I do remember though once at a Premier Inn I was there and the check-in was ok but I got to my room and the people before were still there so I left my stuff with them and they said they would look after it but when I came back they were still there and were asleep in the beds so I slept in the bathroom. In the morning they already had had breakfast and charged it to the room and they did the same the next day so I had to sleep in the bathroom again. It was annoying sleeping in the bathroom and the hotel let them keep charging things to my room and that was annoying but overall not a bad hotel nice views from the window. Another great positive video love it thanks.

    Hey man, how did you slowly start loading your core? I had umbilical and epigastric hernia repair, as well as diastasis recti up the midline surgery 5 days ago with subcutaneous onlay laparoscopically. The pain at this point is still very intense, like hot knives in my belly button. I have a drain in for a week and a binder to support me.
    I have a background of calisthenics, running, yoga and gymnastics and really want to get back to this. I'd lost a lost of strength and muscle weight prior to the surgery, after a gnarly post op infection from my wisdom tooth extraction surgery, so feel like i've got a long road ahead. Want to get strong again but not overdo it and bust something. Any suggestions on what to do when would be welcome. I'm trying to seek out some local physiotherapist support for my rehab. There is such varied advice out there, and I had very minimal guidance from the surgeon. Basically just, you should be fine to do most stuff after a few weeks. Not great advice for me as I'd be back to busting out gymnastics rings pull ups lol
    Cheers

  • @ErnieOne
    @ErnieOne 4 года назад +1

    Thank you for talking openly about your issue. I am facing same health problem for almost ten years already. The majority of the doctors says that I shouldn’t do anything , so far, because there is no danger. But it is always in my mind. May I ask if this issue caused you any further problems while you were racing 100k in South Africa or in Mozart100? Wish you to get back to your running pretty soon and thank you for your nice video! In solidarity!

    • @BenParkes
      @BenParkes  4 года назад +1

      If you’re always close by to good healthcare then it can be ok to do watchful waiting.. which for me living in central London was ok. But I wanted to get it fixed as we have lots of travel we want to do, to more remote areas of the world... where if something went wrong I could be in trouble. So made sense to fix it. I’ve never had any issues in races. In races where I struggled, such as those two, it wasn’t because of the hernia. Just tough days!
      There is always a risk by not having it repaired.. all be it a very minor risk, as in reality as most people can get it fixed quickly if they need to.
      Hopefully you find a solution that works well for you. I spoke with a few different surgeons in the UK before I found the right solution for me.. so it pays to do your research, read and get it sorted when the time is right for you.
      All the best!

    If anyone is wondeirng it's Dr. Koch who did Bens surgery, a good choice if you want a pure tissue repair unlike the barbaric methods of using mesh in the UK which can go horribly wrong even years later, rejection, infection, migration etc
