At the 4:56 mark you can see Haley-in-the-black-dress move her arm too far over into her twin's camera space. Her left arm seemingly disappears behind the door for a split second as she raises her arms to her head.

I noticed this same effect in a 1949(!) film put out by the Department of Agriculture (A Step-Saving Kitchen), which includes a clip that appears to be the same woman making bread on three different areas of a counter at the same time (at about 2:30). You can barely make out the cut edge on the left side, but the one on the right is entirely invisible (though that clip is also out of focus which could explain it). I needed to know how it was done, and I remembered this movie. I went to school for Communications in 2007 and despite the advent of digital, they wanted to teach us how to cut film-- but we did so only horizontally for editing purposes. To splice it vertically for such a long length just seemed so difficult, and I figured it must have required the steadiest of hands and some kind of special adhesive to make it look so seamless. The idea of a background element concealing the seam is so smart! I would've loved to see the exact methodology in the cutting room. What a talented group of people to make it work so well together.

This was very educational and I've always wondered how they exactly did that. Cute Hayley Mills made a bunch of nice family movies when she was under contract with Disney Studios, when Walt Disney was still alive who seen to it that they kept the movies morally decent and family oriented, not like today's degenerative movies. The original Parent Trap was the best. Thanks for sharing!

The Parent Trap is very different, though. In this movie, the actors must stay on their own sides of the screen. In the Parent Trap, the two girls are seen hugging and interacting on both sides. That is where the controversy comes from.

Walt Disney was known for pioneering film technology and figuring new ways to use the current technology. For example, people thought that nobody would sit for a full length animated feature, and they thought the technology wasn't advanced enough, but he did it anyway, and made a ton of money and the film is still celebrated to this day, even though Walt's studio was about to go bankrupt during the production of the film.
