www.MyRideisMe.com builds a six cylinder Ford engine, step by step. With guidance from my pops, a retired Ford mechanic, he shows me how, then I give it my best shot, not always successful the first time, I hope everyone interested in building their own engine can learn a little something.
Thank you for sharing this video. I have a 61 2dr wagon that has been in storage for 10 years while i was in the Navy. Was my first car and my old man helped me build a lot of it but we never got to this point in our build together. He passed last year and now I have found myself back home with my 6 y/o son and the falcon ready to be rebuilt again with me.
Let's get this str8... I'm 61 years old and of all the tv shows and vlogs I've seen on youtube... I have absolutely never ever never seen anyone weigh a piston/rod and match the weights. I'm sure it's nothing new but this is a new one on me.
Well, to tell the truth, I was just curious! Who know if/what might happen? The rpms are so low on a 6 anyway... most likely not important.
Excellent video. I rebuilt a 200 for my 63 Falcon about 10 years ago and I'm doing another 200 for my 65 Mustang. I'm restoring the Mustang with my 14 year old son. Thanks again

Piston rings especially the compression rings can be checked in each cylinder that they will be installed in by checking the gap of each ring in that particular cylinder, This is the preferred method.
The "rope" real mail oil seal is preferred. Use the old connecting rod bolts if you are going to use "plastigauge" checking the bearings clearances and always use new rod bolts for the final assembly!
Have the casting plugs (freeze plugs) installed at the place that cleaned the block and have the cam bearings installed, too.
Fact: I had to replace the rear main seal 3 times to get it to stop leaking! I don't know if there was alot of variation in the part? I finally stopped using the fel-pro gasket and that one finally sealed. Taking the trans out and taking off the pan was such a hassle under the car! Wish I had got it right the first time!

Sweet old Ford. These engines were so simple and reliable. The stroke on these is so short that the piston speed vs. cylinder wall is quite low. They spend a higher percentage of the time near top dead center and bottom dead center vs. a long stroke engine. That's one reason why they lasted so long. That's a high quality rebuild. Better than factory, actually. The factory built them "good enough" without any hand fitting or precision balancing or casting work. The engine in this video is literally better than it was when new.

Thanks for letting the world share in your Father son build, and thanks for being honest in you video. Not everything just falls into place during a build. Years of experience can make something difficult look very easy. It's important not to be discourage. Great job all around

The Ford 50 60 70 's inline 6 170 through 300 Cid's were bullet proof engines. Very reliable, simple and easy to work on, all cast iron, good power and torque for hauling and work. You service them, they'll work and last for you.

You did a great job making this video. I'm fixing to rebuild my 1965 Mustang 200 c.i. engine. I have the engine out; and I will be taking to the machine shop soon.
I have a 1965 200cid engine that needs to be inspected. It starts but as it warms up it gets worse and worse till it won't run. An inspection and possible rebuild could be just what it needs. I suspect head damage but not sure at this point. It was used to pull a lot of weight over several mountains and has never ran the same since. Thank for this video!

you and ur pops have done a very good job. ask your pops to teach you more about how to use ring compressor.

You should look up the Falcon 250 built by Ford Australia. Later versions had crossflow alloy heads, fuel injection, and some rare factory turbocharged versions. Earlier Australian Falcons were based on their Canadian namesake, but for the most part, the engines are interchangeable with minimum modifications

Ahh the ford 6. My first engine rebuild was a 200ci in an XR panel van whaay back when. Then progressed to an XB coupe with the 250ci HC motor. Strong, reliable and simple engine. BTW the alloy heads were co-developed with Yamaha (or was it Honda? ) of Japan back then, in I think the XD. And those integral head/intake manifold castings for a single barrel carb...

Most likely Yamaha. In the 1970s, Toyota wanted to add some kick to the 18R 1.8 litre fitted to the early Celicas. Not being a large or heavy car, they were already pretty nimble, but they asked Yamaha to help them design a DOHC head for the 18R. This featured free flowing ports, and an exotic carburettor setup featuring four Mikuni carburettors, much like what Yamaha used on their bigger touring bikes

I did a bit more research and Honda seemed to come up as the one. I used to have the official Ford sales brochures back in the day but can't be sure100% honda or Yamaha in that respect. will do a check of my period Modern Motor Magazine collection, a very accurate source IMO. should reveal all. Really nice video, guys! Cherish the time you spend with your Dad. I have one question- Why did ya'll put the crank in before the cam? Not being critical, but it's so much easier to do it that way guiding the cam in through each cam bearing, one at a time, hence, safer on the cam bearings. I did this for a living, 8 hrs. a day, 6 days a week for several years- so we had to do these things fast, because they didn't like come-backs.

Oh wow. That's for compressing piston rings? Haha I've always used it to un-screw oil filters.
yes! it ran too hot because the engine was small so the block has less water inside to dissipate the heat.
the correction could have been an electric enforced circulation pump instead of its meccanical one and a bigger radiator
but a big block can dissipate the heat with more ease it contains more coolant in the system and the cylinders are more distant from each other.
in fact all engines with high voltage spark plugs can run on hydrogen.

Hey I recently got an inline 6 1966 mustang. I have all the parts for a tune up. The engine does not start sometimes and sometimes if it does start it will suddenly stop. I've been told that these engines are simple and easier to work on for novices. Should I take my car to the shop or use my chilton manual to fix my car.
By chance do a dyno of this engine?
No... no chance to. I'm guessing power around a whopping 100 HP!
Did you Plastigage the bearing caps to verify tolerance? End gap the rings? Not doing these can cause real problems.

my uncle told me he built a vw engine back in the 70's that ran on hydrogen for a college project but it ran too hot, I thought that was interesting, for being so long ago. I hate those plasitic cars too
keep those old engines, keep them running!!
one day they can easilly run on hydrogen and be cleaner than the computerised plastic vehicles they throw at us

It's custom, done by a falcon guy that I know isn't alive anymore. It was kinda hokey how he did it... some machine work and some build up of JB weld I think?
