  • After one year with my DVO Onyx SC D1 170mm fork, I figured the time was right to share my experience so far. In this video I share with you what I like, don't like and future plans with DVO forks.
    Is this the best mountain biking fork?

    After riding rockshox, fox 36, and 38 factory, DVO is by far the best fork when it comes to small bump compliance. That OTT is👌🏾

      can someone for the love of God explain to me why is everyone talking about OTT being the factor here?
      My understanding may be wrong , but AFAIK what negative air chamber does in regular forks via equalization port, is what OTT does in this system with negative spring .
      Negative spring is used for instance in suntour forks (and does not yield any awesome improvement of small bump sensitivity unlike with DVO), however lacking adjustability you gotta buy a different negative spring if the air pressure for your weight goes too hight/too low, otherwise you end up with a stiff off-the-top feeling or vice versa a fork that sits lower than its speced travel. DVO addresses this with a preload on the negative (right?) - a smart solution - which however means that for particular weight:air pressure, there is (~approx +-)one setting of OTT that applies for maximum plushness, going one way introduces harshness if the air pressure remains unchanged, going the other way will reduce my travel (at least with suntour construction, dunno abt dvo) as the positive spring will push the negative further into its travel to find the equalization point.
      I assume the negative spring instead of the dedicated air chamber introduces one less o-ring seal, which would reduce some of the friction leading to less drag in the system, otherwise it still appears to me you are manually doing what equalization of the negative air chamber does normally.
      regardless the above, imho people who are very limited in their riding abilities to be able to draw conclusions compare variously (not)serviced forks to variously broken-in forks with various dampers shimmed and set up to various damping levels and label this whole experience as "OTT is awesome man" .

      @@_systemd It's difficult to understand what question you're trying to ask here. Your impression of how OTT works, and comparison to the Suntour negative coil are correct.
      Talking about advantages of OTT compared to transfer ports on negative air springs, you can dial OTT for your specific preference for positive/negative force ratio (some like less or more), where a transfer port will always give you the same ratio according to your positive pressure.
      Regarding people with less experience/understanding with their suspension performance, one thing everyone can differentiate between is how the fork feels in the "parking lot test". You can set up OTT so the fork feels really plush in the initial stroke, so maybe that has an effect on some initial impressions?
      I've been riding a Diamond and Onyx for the past 3 years, OTT is a great feature, and the forks have been great.

    Cool review, I've been using my Onyx SC just coming a year too. Did full rebuild and servicing myself now. My Onyx doesn't sound as noisy as yours thou. There's a small tick here and there on impact but on trail it's hardly noticeable, maybe a thicker waterproof grease would help on yours. I've got the OTT unwinding on the first couple months too. Been using the OTT cap and it's been good so far. If your doing 3d print make sure to use some sturdy material yet still have alittle flex in it, I think mine is petg, if the OTT cap is full solid it might crack overtime. My Onyx is a custom tuned, beside the damper tune another main difference is the oversize bushing, which you probably can request from DVO if your getting a new lower leg. Cheers

    Very nice. I’m looking at getting a Ripmo with this fork next year and moving away from my Fox factory 36. The Fox is nice and supportive riding high in the travel, but I do feel like it is a bit harsh on smaller chatter (and brake bumps at summit)

    Have you looked into getting a cascade link on your next Ripmo? I just installed one on mine and it is a total game changer for the Ripmo, no more blowing through the rear travel on a pebble. It manages to not only make it feel like it has 20mm more travel (you do get 4mm more travel on the AF for a total of 151mm), but also way smoother off the lip of a jump, and also smoother off the top.

    Hey brother , I know you've moved on from DVO and I know is kind of late but if you ever go back to the onyx. Dvo ended up using water proof grease which doesn't with the fork oil I think the clicking has to do with the coil loosing grease by mixing with the fork oil

    Thinks i hate at the Fork:
    - Crap stickers. Text is seperating from the white underground
    - Bad axle design. Do QR Axle to get for
    - Crap Design. At RS you don't need a special tool and you don't need to screw or unscrew anything so overtighting is impossible. Also Glued in so you already see marks there if you change travel ones.
    What i really like:
    It does not say +/- it says plush/firm. So nearly impossible to do anything wrong there because you know what happens in which direction.
    Travel change is also in less then 10mm increments possible since you can shorten this things.

    DVO marketing guys are really good, making a feature into a selling point, OTT is just a preload adjustment for the negative coil spring that's in there, it's inferior to all other forms (mainly multiple spring weights and self equalising negative air chamber) but works well enough I guess.

    • @willyf1847
      @willyf1847 2 года назад

      The primary advantage - as far as I can tell- offered by DVO's OTT arrangement vs the more typical equalising negative air spring, found on most other forks, is that it enables DVO to remove one of the two air tight seals found in the aforementioned air spring. The preload feature meanwhile mitigates against the primary disadvantage associated with a coil negative spring, namely that it will only match the positive spring rate of a relatively small number of riders.

    • @piciu256
      @piciu256 2 года назад

      @@willyf1847 I guess that's true, however modern air springd have so little friction already, the bushings are the main concern for friction, not the spring.
      Btw. they'd didn't go equalising chamber because if I recall correctly, RS had the patents for that, that's why Suntour went full equalising all of sudden- the patents expired.
      The preload thing is all nice and perfect, if you only look at top out, at sag, aspecially if you run more than expected (eg. 30%) the negative spring is not as effective when outside the perfect window, I don't know about you, but I don't care about top out bump compliance 😜 I'm totally theorising here btw., this probably doesn't matter in the real world, just like one more seal does not matter, however, I have read that these forks work better, the faster and more aggressive you ride, so there might be something to it.
      The most plush fork I ever rode was a Pike Debonair, it was super active at slow speed, however the damper is terrible and it just didn't work well as soon as I gained any speed over rough stuff, RS is totally overrated imo, I haven't ridden high end Fox stuff yet.
