  • In a clinical trial assessing ketogenic diet in patients with malignancies of the brain and spine, “we had some really incredible results that were not explained by anything other than diet,” says L.J. Amaral, a registered dietitian at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Their exciting research is based on the hypothesis that ketogenic metabolic therapy (KMT) may elicit anti-cancer effects itself, or may even be capable of increasing the sensitivity of chemotherapy and radiation in some cases.
In her presentation "Implementing Metabolic Therapy in Oncology", Amaral shares how she utilizes KMT in patients, which cancer types she has personal experience with, and the patient populations that are not typically recommended for KMT. In addition, she shares a step-wise plan for educating and easing patients into this new lifestyle including tailoring each patient’s diet to the foods they enjoy and are going to miss the most. Ms. Amaral emphasizes that taking the extra 10 minutes to find a recipe for that one thing that will most likely tempt an individual patient to not follow the meal plan.
Her presentation slides are available on our virtual platform and include practical guides on food choices, diet composition, and potential pitfalls that she faces when working to keep patients in a state of therapeutic ketosis. Further, Amaral discusses the common side effects of KMT and methods for clinicians to aid their patients in adherence including how to handle hypoglycemia, nausea, and digestive issues.
