Dr. Thomas Seyfried: Cancer as a Mitochondrial Metabolic Disease

  • Thomas Seyfried, Ph.D., is a biochemical geneticist, professor of biology at Boston College, and author of the groundbreaking book Cancer as a Metabolic Disease. As part of a lecture delivered on July 31, 2018, at the annual CrossFit Health Conference, Seyfried presented a report card on our current approaches to treating cancer in the United States. Looking at data from the American Cancer Society on cancer incidence and deaths per day between 2013 and 2017, he noted death rates are actually on the rise. “The more money we raise for cancer, the more cancer we get,” he observed. “So you have to ask, ‘What is going on here?’ ... This is a failure of monumental proportions.”
The reason for the failure “has to do with a fundamental misunderstanding of what the nature of this disease is,” he explained. “We’ve been led to believe that this is a genetic disease, and I’ll present evidence to say that it’s not.”
The belief that cancer is a genetic disease associated with somatic mutation has become dogma, Seyfried explained, and this dogma shaped much of the cancer research and treatment protocols of the twentieth century. So-called cutting-edge treatments, such as personalized therapy and precision medicine, are based on this viewpoint.
Unfortunately, the viewpoint is wrong, as Seyfried explained in “Cancer as a Mitochondrial Metabolic Disease,” an article published in Frontiers in 2015. There, he aggregated existing research on cancer and reevaluated the information in light of the two competing theories on the origin of the disease (i.e., cancer as a genetic or metabolic disease).
The research he surveyed supported Otto Warburg’s theory that cancer develops as a result of disturbed energy metabolism. Seyfried and his colleagues compared nuclear-cytoplasmic transfer and mitochondrial transfer experiments and found that the mitochondria are “calling the shots, not the nucleus,” which is “the opposite of what we would expect if this were a genetic disease,” he explained.
Seyfried then described what he and his colleagues believe is the missing link in Warburg’s theory. Normal healthy cells derive energy from oxidative phosphorylation. Cancer cells, on the other hand, get energy through fermentation. What Seyfried and his colleagues discovered - and what Warburg did not know - is that cancer cells can ferment not only lactic acid but amino acids as well. That is to say, cancer cells can derive energy for proliferation from glucose and glutamine. Thus, to remove a cancer cell’s energy source, one has to remove its access to fermentable fuels, and an effective way to do this, Seyfried found, is through calorie restriction and ketosis.
Calorie restriction and ketosis, he explained, are anti-angiogenic, anti-inflammatory, and pro-apoptotic. “No cancer drug is known that can do this without toxicity,” he said. He then added that those who claim they don’t understand the mechanism by which calorie restriction and ketosis work are full of “bullshit.” “They don’t read the literature. Nor do they contribute to it,” he said.
Seyfried’s cancer research, particularly on aggressive forms of cancer such as glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) and other stage 4 cancers, led to his development of a glucose-ketone index calculator and the press-pulse therapeutic strategy. The calculator helps patients monitor their progress toward therapeutic ketosis. The press-pulse method pairs press therapies, such as following a keto diet while taking ketone supplements and practicing stress management, with pulse therapies, such as taking glucose and glutamine inhibitors while undergoing hyperbaric oxygen treatments. During his presentation, Seyfried explained how and why these methods are more effective for cancer patients than traditional standard of care.
“GBM and other stage 4 cancers - I don’t consider them as terminal cancers,” he said.

Hi Dr. Seyfried, I am so glad I have found you. I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer Dec 2021. Unfortunately I have nearly finished chemotherapy. It has been 7 months since my diagnosis. I have been on a ketogenic diet and have been doing intermittent fasting for a month. I am physically very well and very strong. I am really keen to go a step further and begin longer fasts. I have put my work on hold to do this properly. I have ordered your book, so that I can be informed even further of the Metabolic approach to treating cancer. The main stream doctors are trying to persuade me to begin radiotherapy in the next couple of weeks, but I don't want to after listening to you on RUclips. I would like to do the long fasts properly and I would like to block Glutamine uptake with one of the drugs you have mentioned. I am interested in finding a medical practitioner that will be able to help me get one of the drugs, help me with the dosage etc. Do you know of any medical practitioners that are willing to help?

The dogma of pink ribbons, surgery, chemo and genetic research paradigms is a powerful totem pole for millions of people (professionals and patients). Tom Seyfried represents a new paradigm for contemporary healthcare professionals - is this disease inevitable and genetic or......can we take responsibility for our own health, nutrition and fitness? We don't wait for a dentist every morning coming to brush our teeth! Similarly every single person who is currently fit and well has a responsibility to become well-informed about their future self. There is no law that mandates regular muffin & soda consumption every 3 hours...this a marketing ploy started by cereal manufacturers. The idea that "best" care in many parts of the world mandates radiation and chemotherapy is a paradigm that may finally have met it's match. Restricting types of food intake, fasting, hyperbaric chambers, root-cause analysis of cancer - this lecture has started my chase down the rabbit hole for all of my patients I see from today onwards. Thanks CrossFit and thanks Dr Seyfried!

Fantastic session. Makes sense the added glutamine inhibitors . This works good for patients that lost a lot of weight and cannot be put for 15-40 days of water fasting to shrink the tumors. Basically, water fasting will do the same getting glucose and glutamine levels to very low, starving the cancer, but, again, patient has to have some weight to lose for that and another thing.. extreme long water fasting is not easy manageable by every patient...

I was poisoned and radiated and knew it was wrong, but I was told that if I had the tumor surgically removed I had to have radiation. She said that was the rule. I knew it was wrong. I was fine after the surgery and could have recovered. But radiation knocked me flat for at least five years.

    • @davidtiessen7713
      @davidtiessen7713 4 месяца назад

radiation kills more than it saves. I would never do it. Instead I would starve myself/ the cancer and let my healthy cells get fed from my ketones/ fat. This is the essence of this research. This is how our bodies developed. We'd kill an animal eat it and store the energy as fat. We'd then begin to starve until we found another animal to kill days later. Sedentiary lives have us processing less oxygen per day (this is the cause of flipping a healthy cell to cancerous - Otto Warburgs Nobel prize discovery) and then fridges and prcessed foods have us constantly fed. So were creating the conditions in our body for cancer to exist and then feeding the cancers growth by our sugar/carb based diets. The solution is simple. Breathe more, eat healthy and intermittant fast.... cut the carbs and sugars and if you get cancer you need to go more drastic - get into ketosis then introduce high fat / low protein diet. PS Im no DR. This is merely me regurgitating what I've learned. Research and follow Dr Seyfried.

This is a very interesting lecture. I don't currently have time to do deep research, so assuming this theory is correct, what can a person do for themselves if they do not have access to a medical facility that offer this type of cancer treatment?
My best friends gf has late stage lung cancer with metastasis who knows where. Been to different hospitals and no one tells her anything or explains the procedure of treatment which has left her feeling afraid and full of regret.
She has extreme pain and hardly any energy, yet they sent her home from hospital after the last immunotherapy claiming her pain is psychosomatic.
She has done chemo and radiation as well.
She can hardly eat and lost a lot of body mass. I don't know what to do and my friend is exhausted because he has to take care of her all day and watch her suffer while doctors say it's all in her head.
She had chronic pain before and no one knows why, but she used to be very active in spite of it. Now she can hardly walk.
What canbe done from home? Is ut possible to block glutamine without prescription medicine? This is Germany so the system might be a bit different. Alternative doctors only offer expensive treatment she can't afford.

The million dollar question is,.................when you're afraid, what will you do? What you're told by the professional mob, to avoid the chance of ridicule and pity, from authorities, and laymen who follow, and don't want your behavior to invalidate their choices. Or, .............your own, less informed, but, perhaps correct opinion, with the upside of your life, but no validation from anyone else. Who do you live and die for? Her mom had non Hodgkin's lymphoma as a kid and I also keep on thinking if this could have contributed to my niece's DIPG. I am looking for answers wherever I can and appreciate your knowledge..I also have something interesting to tell and ask you about in my next comment if you don't mind, but first wanted to find out if you think my sister's cancer could have had anything to do with my niece 's DIPG.
