Hey bro,
I’m a pre-med student from Chicago and i just discovered your channel. It’s so inspirational seeing someone that looks like me accomplish the goals that i want to accomplish. You just inspired me to go 100 times harder because i know that my dreams are possible. Your videos matter, I needed to see this. May you continue to strive and prosper.
Thank you so much for this bro and I’m honored that you’ve found my videos helpful and inspiring. You are FULLY CAPABLE to achieve anything you set your mind to and I’m so happy you can resonate with me in the way you do ✊🏽. Let me know if there are any questions you ever have or if I can ever be of any help along your own journey.
Hi,Oneil what is your major?
If you like this channel then you’ll also like Ahmad Shahin’s. That’s the channel name. Similar stuff (he’s also at Mayo in Arizona) my favorite RUclipsr for sure
Also a premed from Chicago!! Same here, such an inspiration
@@EvolvingMedic bless ya so much hard work to become an dr I'm sure in end your get there i hope one day to help teach medical students as one of there body donors as I'm thermally ill young man so decided to give consent to body donation in hope to help teach medical students Anatomy i wish all well in there studies and pray you carry on to become great dr take care
I randomly click on this video, and I must say I’m really proud as a black man to see this young black brother and the other black brother in medical school 🙏🏿👏👏👏👏👍🏿👍🏿KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!
Yessir! Thank you so much!! 🙏🏽
Imagine if a white guy said that
@@infini_g Doesn’t matter, he’s just complimenting his achievements, regardless of race.
@@infini_gthat makes no sense. The reason he brought up race was because people who look like OP i.e. black are under represented in the field of medicine therefore he is proud to see someone who looks like him in medical school.
I know a black guy in my college he is one the best students i met in my life
There’s a certain passion or positivity that shows through and it’s really inspiring. I’m finishing up my BSN but I feel like I need to understand more and learn more, it just doesn’t quite feel right. I think I’m going to finish the pre med prereqs and work towards getting into med school. thank you for the videos!
I’m so happy you can resonate with me and I’m glad to hear you’re following your passions and considering pursuing med school! It’s a tough journey but when you’re passionate about it, you wouldn’t want to be doing anything else. Let me know if you ever have any questions about anything!
First, you are not a RN officially and there is so much you can learn from that path. I felt the same way in Nursing School but once on the floor the knowledge grew grew and keeps growing. If you went into Nursing to have a Medical view can be misguided. They are two different professions with many similarities but at the core they are distinctly different. I hope this helps in your journey.
Love how I used to wonder about the lives of med students but now i’m living it 🥺 but I still love watching these day in a life videos 😂
Hahah I’m the same way! 😂
I’m so glad I stumbled across this page. The positivity you bring I feel is unmatched and helps me relate to my medicine journey in so many ways. I look forward to keep moving forward with you!!
I’m so happy to hear that Alex! And honored by those kind words! More videos to come!
I just got into medical school, I watched this video two years ago and it was super inspiring!
Congratulations!! That is amazing news and I’m so happy this video helped provide you with a bit of inspiration!
Thank you! The way you keep yourself together and get things done is super motivating!
Thank you so much! Some days are better than others lol but I’m honored to serve as a source of motivation!
I love your joy!!! I submitted my secondary to Mayo Alix last week. God willing I’ll see you next year. God bless you and your family
Such a chill vibe on this day in the life. Loved it!
I’m glad you enjoyed it Jenna!! 😊
BRO I LOVED THIS VIDEO! The quality is amazing from start to finish and I've learnt a lot of things and will probably adopt some of your routines
I knew you and the pre-med hub both go to mayo but i didn't think it was the same campus. I literally love you guys.
Yeah! Grace is awesome!! And I’m so happy you’ve found our channels helpful! 😊🙏🏽
Hey JR,
My name is Marq and I look forward to following your journey. I am a 2nd year veterinary student, it’s crazy to see the similarities in our days lol. Those 7a-7p days kick my butt, but it’ll be worth it in the end! Keep up the GREAT work!
That’s awesome that our days are so similar! And you and me both on those 7-7 days lol. But you’re right, it’ll be worth it!
Love the vibe and style of your videos. I’m only a freshman in college, but I hope to be in your shoes one day. Keep inspiring people thank you!
Love your channel! You radiate such positivity and passion for medicine and it is so inspiring to see. Your voice is also very soothing lol. Keep up the great work man!

Thanks!! I’m glad you enjoyed it and good luck on your own medical journey! 🙏🏽
I am so happy for you I am in Grade 12 of secondary school and i'm having my A levels final exams next year and I am planning to move to france afterwards to study Oncology and my dream is definitely to work at Mayo clinic one day be...I hope that I will be able to make it .Seeing you enjoying your life as a medical student makes me look forward to it...Your enthusiasm motivates me a lot cause all I see on youtube is people crying because of med school (which I guess gets more tough throughout the years and I completely understand the frustration behind all of it ) I enjoy seeing you being so optimistic about it .
I’m glad to hear that my videos have motivated you. There can definitely be hard times in this field, but at the end of the day it is an honor to practice medicine.
Wishing you the best of luck!
Thanks for showing these great type of videos! I live near this school, and work at Mayo. I actually aspire to attend here someday for medical school, so its great seeing what it would be like. You are very inspirational and its relieving to see the balance you have with school and the rest of your life and wellbeing. If possible, if you offer any mentorship or shadowing, I would be greatly interested and appreciative!
Thank you so much for this message and I’m honored that you have found my videos helpful and inspiring. I recommend joining our Teach as You Learn mentorship community! You would receive mentorship from me as well as many other students!

So happy I found this channel! You’re clearly gonna be an incredible doctor. I’m heading back to finish undergrad and hopefully head to med school and just found ANKI. Guess that app is gonna be in my life for a while hahaha
Thank you so much for that encouragement! And I’m glad you found my channel too! If you’re anything like me, Anki will be your best friend (that you have a love/hate relationship with 😂)
Injections, so exciting!!! Keep evolving and motivating!🤓
Thanks so much! Keep evolving! 🙌🏽
wow!!! this is amazing .. I went to Mayo for some health issues of mine and all I can say is they were amazing!! good luck with everything !

Appreciate you bro!!
amazing video. Glad to see you crushing it.
Thank you so much!
Very inspiring!!! Congrats
Thank you so much!!
Love your channel 💜 your vibe is so inspiring
excuse my ignorance but what is “anki” please?
Thank you Artistic Anna! 🙏🏽
Anki is a flash card tool that students use to study. It’s based on spaced repetition, essentially reviewing material in a consistent way to avoid forgetting it. Here is a video I made going into much more detail: ruclips.net/video/xLIKnumRXD0/видео.html
I've been watching so much ortho content lately lol. It's really a fascinating speciality.
I absolutely love it! I definitely recommend continuing to look into it!
Great vibes on this video! Makes me more excited to start my med school journey this summer. (p.s. Quinn is representing Carleton well!)
I’m glad you liked the video and congrats on getting into med school! Quinn is the man!
you just got a new subscriber!
If you could do a detailed breakdown of your day (from morning to night) and how you avoid burnout, that would be amazing
Thanks for subscribing! And that’s a great video idea!
Keep goin young king. The world is yours!! #subbed
Appreciate you!!
its Nice to see my fellow POC crushing it, im pre-med from miami
Appreciate you bro! You got next! ✊🏽 Always feel free to reach out if you have any questions or if I can ever help with anything
@@EvolvingMedic I appreciate you so much, you'll do great in ortho, you actually already answered it in your study habits video! how do you afford everything, are you able to work and do medical school?
Working during medical school isn’t really feasible, but I’m blessed with a wife that works 😅 lol. But student loans allow the vast majority of medical students to go to school and also pay for things like housing, food, etc.
We out here doing Anki for med school in the UK too. Anki really be saving all med students around the world.
That’s so crazy! It really do be saving us! Lol
I really love the music man
I’m glad you liked it!
I'm from philippines really want to pursue med school I'm currently studying BSN incoming third year this current year and u really inspire me to go medschool with your sincerity and passionate schedule thankyou for this vlog and keep fighting Dr. Smith!
I’m so happy I’ve been able to inspire you! I’m sure you’re going to crush your third year and be an incredible medical student one day!
Wow you've got a nice relaxing voice! Nice video ❤️
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
Good thing I still have Highschool ahead of me but I’m panicking and trying to figure what I should do what classes I should take to get into Mayo Clinic college. I’m already set on neurosurgery but I don’t know what will get me into there. Watching your video got me excited too, it’s so well made and gives everybody a good insight on what it’s like. I’m going to be moving to Rochester mn hopefully in a year so I can go to high school in Rochester. Yeah this was long, bye
I’m glad you’re enjoying my videos! And there’s no need to panic, especially as a high schooler. I would recommend to just focus on building good student habits over the next few years. Then the rest will take care if itself
I met a guy long time ago, probably big shot high grossing doctor now, he said medschool was a party, he got to spend it on a island resort in the Caribbean. They got medschool there.
Do more videos like this!!
This is amazing 👌💕
Thank you so much! 🙏🏽
😮😮😮 I got featured on JR’s videoooo!!!!!!!!!! I am soo honoreddd!!!!!!! Happy new year and keep evolving! We look up to you!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾
I’m just honored that I got to put YOU in my video!! 🙏🏽😊
@@EvolvingMedic Awww you are so kind! GOD bless you JR!
I really enjoyed kinda seeing what you were working on in the clips, as well as the editing and flow of the video!!! What do you use to edit?
I’m glad you enjoyed the video! 😊 I use Final Cut Pro to edit
Currently a graduating senior majoring in Sociology at Morehouse. I intend to do a post baccalaureate program after graduation and starting Medical School in the summer o4 24’. Your videos are truly uplifting and inspiring. Do you have any advice for people who are taking the untraditional route to medical school? Thanks in advance!
So happy you’ve found inspiration in my videos bro! I also am a nontraditional student (I took two gap years). My advice would be to embrace the real world learning you can experience by doing something between undergrad and med school. You’ll bring something special and unique to your future med school class by what you experienced before starting med school. And you have the opportunity to gain more experience than most by taking gap years. Being intentional with growing as a person and not just as a student during this time will help you a ton as an applicant, med student and future physician.
I hope this helps and good luck!!
LOVE IT!!
Appreciate you!!
the intro >>>
Thank you!
First, great video! Love your channel! What is the music at the beginning (and middle) of your video? Seems good for a study sesh.
I’m glad you’re liking these videos! And the music comes from storyblocks which is a resource that has royalty free music that can be used on RUclips. I usually listen to lo-fi hip hop music which is similar
Motivating me to keep pushing towards my medical career. Currently active duty army & planning to start my BSN for nursing next year after I complete my CCMA course
That’s incredible!! Thank you for your service and I’m honored to play a role in motivating you to pursue your medical career! You’ll be an amazing nurse 🙏🏽
Hi JR! This is your uncle Eric! I am soooo proud of you and your accomplishments! WOW you look like your Dad! I love you! ❤
Uncle Eric!! Thank you so much!! I love you too!! ❤️ And I can’t run away from the resemblance to my dad! 😂
Love the channel! Just starting to watch some of your videos. As a med student where do you get your anki decks from (make them yourself, premade online ones, past med students)?
I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos! I use the premade Anking deck
Hi! I’m a medical student in Sweden and it’s cool to see that people are fighting through their Anki cards even at Mayo hahah I feel like most of my time goes to making them instead of going through them regularly 🙈 how much time would you say you spend on creating them compared to studying with them?
Anki really must be a universal grind hahah. But I don’t make many cards honestly. I use the premade Anking deck for the vast majority of my cards
A collab with Ahmad Shahin would be a certified BANGER!!!!!
I’d love to collab with Ahmad! Can confirm it would be a banger 😏
Hey JR! Wanted to ask about that morning anki - you mentioned you prioritized hematology as its your block, but if the AnKing card count is everything you’ve done, how are you configuring it to show you the heme stuff first? I thought the only part we could control was either randomize all cards, or show new cards for the day after all review?
Just a bit confused about Anki as I try to navigate it haha but i figure you’re only getting new cards AFTER you preview the lec last night…?
Thanks!
Great vid! Curious on the make and model of the wireless headphones you use? Currently shopping for a pair.
Thank you! And these are the Sony wireless noise canceling headphones: Model WH-H910N. I love them! Sony has some great options
Tbh I thought med school was like studying from 5 in the morning till 12 at night
Lol some days may be like that, but not definitely not most! Hahah
Congratulations on finishing anki
Thank you! It was definitely a grind lol, but we got it done!
@@EvolvingMedic No problem
Wow. I might not be quaified for mayo med but I am definitely applying. I had a family member receive treatment from there and I want to be apart of mayo. great video :D
I definitely didn’t think I was qualified! You never know with the med school application so I’m glad to hear you’re applying! And I’m also glad to hear that your family member received good treatment here! 🙏🏽
@@EvolvingMedic yep! Never know so might as well try😁
Wouldve loved to see more of the ortho clip and them talking abt the why ortho slide! Idk if u can film some parts of your lectures so I understand if u cant. Does your school have groups like that for most specialties?
Also, does mayo clinic start clinic early? I thought clinic was mainly 3rd and 4th yr
We do have groups like this for almost all specialties and we also begin seeing patients pretty early. We still begin our formal clerkship rotations during third year like almost all school, but we begin rotating through inpatient, outpatient, pediatrics and our clinic for underinsured patients at the end of our first year and throughout our second year.
Can you please make a video on your desk setup
Absolutely! I am actually currently planning a desk setup video!
Keep it up !! 🙌🚑👍
Thank you so much! Will do!
the AA king
Hey man, love the videos! Do you make your own anki cards? Or do you find some already pre made?
Hey! I’m glad you’re loving the videos! I primarily use premade cards (just the Anking deck really lol)
@@EvolvingMedic sweet! I’m really new to them so I’m trying to figure it all out!
You are so adorable, you have a glow about you that speaks to me spirit. 😊
Where did you get your suit? It’s so fresh.
Thank you!! I honestly don’t know lol. I think this was a gift a few years ago
Hey man thanx for sharing! Do you use pre-made decks? Any recommendations?
I use the Anking deck for almost everything and the Annetermy deck for anatomy. I hope this helps!
Bro what are those headphones you use to study at home? Need something like that. Great vids! Much love from a pre-Med taking MCAT this April! Wish me luck.
Thank you! And I have the Sony WH-1000xm3. I’ll be dropping an MCAT video soon so be on the lookout for that! Good luck with your studies! 🙏🏽
@@EvolvingMedic awesome I will be grinding in the mean time! Keep killing this books 📚
@@MeaslesHumpNdumP Thank you!
Do you make most of your Anki cards from PowerPoint lectures from your classes? I would love a how-to on how you make your cards if there isn't a video already! Also, is this the only thing you do to memorize?
Great question! I actually don’t make many cards from lecture (though that works for some of my classmates). I really rely on the Anking deck and it corresponds very well to my class content. And Anki is really the only thing I do to study lol. I learn the material, then review it using Anki, and then every now and then do practice questions.
Here’s a video on how I use Anki though. I hope it helps!
ruclips.net/video/xLIKnumRXD0/видео.html
@@EvolvingMedic I'm so envious of your school. At our med school, you wouldn't even pass if all you did / mainly did was Anking. Our exams are stupidly in depth on PhD level stuff that isn't boards relevant :( I'm at 750 daily average of cards, and I don't even keep up with old blocks because there's not enough time.
I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sure it is frustrating for faculty to not teach board relevant material but I hope that the depth of knowledge you gain pays off in the long run!
Loved the vid ngl but im curious what is anki
I’m glad you liked the video!
This video will help you understand what Anki is:
ruclips.net/video/xLIKnumRXD0/видео.html
What camera do you use? Love ur vid. I start med school next year
Thanks so much and congrats on getting into med school! I use the Sony a6400
Great editing brother! You’ll see me vlogging too soon enough!
Let’s go! Glad to hear it!
Hey man, I was wondering, do you make the ankis that you use? If so how do you find the time to make them? If not, then how do you find them? Your videos are extremely helpful and still give me hope!
Hey! I actually don’t make many Anki cards. I almost exclusively use the Anking deck.
Here’s a video walking through exactly how I use Anki: ruclips.net/video/xLIKnumRXD0/видео.html
I hope it helps!
That's a grind, keep going bro it'll pay off
Appreciate you and will do! 💪🏽
It seems a good doctor is coming out soon.
Thank you so much! 🙏🏽
Sir how much student loans do you have? Nice video.
Hi, thanks for the video. I noticed a lot of stairs. Is your campus wheelchair accessible?
Yes Mayo is wheel chair accessible!
where is your suit from?
I’m in 9th grade and I want to become a physiatrist so this was cool to see
That’s awesome! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Hey, Just found your channel and I intend to use it now on as resource tool for me and my journey into my career. I’m in high school now and I want to know if there’s a way I could some material that I will learn in med school in the future? Like can I find that card thing online somewhere?
Hey! I’m glad you’ve found my videos helpful and plan on using them along your own journey! You can download Anki here: apps.ankiweb.net. You can then make your own cards based on things you are learning and want to remember. I hope this helps and always feel free to reach out with any questions!
Hey! I've got a lot of detailed questions about ANKI that I've always wondered of medical student anki users.
When you say "700 anki cards," are those each individual cards, or some you may see multiple times that you need to review again, such as when you click "10 mins" etc. Are some of those cards new cards that take a longer time to know? When you answer the card, are you going through the answer word for word, or do you sometimes visualize the card instead of taking the time to go through the whole answer? If that makes sense. Sometimes I will just visualize in my head what I have on the card, instead of consciously saying the words in my head. I LOVE anki, but I don't know how I'd be able to get through 700 cards in 2 hours, and am wondering what methods you are using to get through them so fast.
Thanks!
All great questions! So I had around 700 reviews but ended at a little over 800 from having to do cards again and adding new cards. The cards I do again or the new cards take much longer, but my reviews I try to fly through based on pattern recognition. Since I take time to fully understand a card when it’s new, I pretty much try and zoom through them when after that (unless I miss it, then it’s back to fully learning the card again). A lot of medicine is pattern recognition: A patient with X symptoms over a time frame of Y with a past medical history of Z = diagnosis. There are times when going back and thinking through the details of a certain disease or the mechanism of action for a certain drug may be helpful, but it really all starts with pattern recognition.
Sorry for the super long response but I hope that makes sense! Let me know if you have any other questions!
@@EvolvingMedic That totally make sense! I’m currently doing a post bacc to eventually go to med school and am trying to build the habit of anki so that it comes much easier once I’m in med school. Thank you for the response!
That’s a great idea! I wish I works have had that forethought 😅. You’re going to be really ahead of the game!
no.1 med school in the whole world
Hello, i really want to become a doctor more specifically a GP, but having read articles form both the BMA and other news sources i keep hearing the same thing - that beards hinder the effectiveness of surgical masks and they must be shaved off. I keep my beard for religious reasons and i guess i was wondering if Doctors more specifically GPs can keep beards, my beard is about a hands length so yeah not those stubble beards but the more lengthy ones. Thank you for reading :) And also what about rotations in medical school so like how do different specialties treat beards like are surgeons expected to be clean shaven more than GPs. Thanks again
Go cats! 😵💫, also curious why some students are in formal attire and some are more casual on campus?
That’s a great question Jamie! When we have to work in the clinic we dress up in formal attire. But students who just have class don’t have to dress up. So it just depends on every one’s personal schedule.
Also… Go Duke! 😉 hahah
Do you make your own anki cards? And how did you get the theme to look like that??
I use the premade Anking deck almost exclusively and only rarely make my own cards. And here is the link to customize your background: ankiweb.net/shared/info/1210908941
It definitely makes it easier to get through the Anki grind when it looks nice lol
hey there i just discovered your channel, great content. I am a resident in mexico and i'm very interested in those aki cards, is it something you made our is it a program that i could also use to review and learn new things?
Hey! It’s something you could definitely use. I made a video going into detail on how I use it that you may find helpful: ruclips.net/video/xLIKnumRXD0/видео.html
