I have only tried Turkish Delight once, during university. I was taking a course called "The Bible and the Arts" and we read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe...so naturally our professor brought in Turkish Delight for the class to sample.

When I was a child I watched a children’s play of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” And in the play they actually had a fake turkey dinner on a platter, because everyone, including the director of the children’s play apparently, thought it was “turkey delight.” 😂

A local version of Turkish delight is one of my state’s classic gift items for some reason (I’m assuming it’s just because we have a lot of apple and apricot orchards). They’re called aplets and cotlets, and they’re sold in all of the state-themed stores and kiosks at malls and the airport lol. I don’t know anyone who casually buys them, but they used to be given as gifts somewhat frequently when I was growing up.

There's this dessert in India called bombay halwa. Exact same process, just instead of rose flavour, you use cardamom seed powder and you add ghee into it. Also, this one looks like it had the texture of jelly. Bombay halwa, on the other hand, is cooked continuously while stirring to the point that it becomes chewy instead of jelly like. You can also add watermelon seeds into it. I love the texture so much. Its almost like rubber.

I would say to anyone who has tried commercial“Turkish delight” and didn’t like it, and has thus decided that it’s not for them, to try “traditional” lokum. As you can see from this recipe, real lokum is made in an entirely different way to the weirdly textured, violently coloured commercial stuff that is usually made with gelatine, and is more like a gummy bear. Real lokum has no gelatine, and has a unique tender bite, and melt in your mouth texture. In fact lokum used to be used to soothe a sore throat. Lemon is probably the least confronting flavour, and rose the most traditional.
