    Erlang Shen has earned his place as one of my favourite bosses in all of gaming. He’s got great lore/story significance, insane visual spectacle (especially in the part of the fight where you take on the Four Kings), and an extremely well developed AI that perfectly reacts to the player’s behaviour and forces them to use their abilities in smart ways.

      @@DarkWanderer666 That’s part of what makes his fight so good tho. He has unique dialogue based on which form you transform into and he reveals a lot about his friendship with Wukong if you listen to his dialogue during the fight. I also love how he encourages you to attack him if you are too passive.
      Erlang’s constant banter with the Destined One combined with the unpredictability of his AI makes his boss fight feel as though you are fighting a real person rather than just another video game enemy. It makes his fight unique.

    The reason why the whole immortality thing is such a big deal in JttW is it's specifically mentioned immortality is against the proper functioning of the cosmos and achieving it is in itself a crime against existence, you are literately stealing energy from the sky and earth, from the sun and moon to do so. To achieve it you need to:
    1. Cultivate yourself, which allows you to overcome the limit of your natural lifespan. Wukong is a stone monkey and may not have a natural life span as such to start with, but just in case he did him crossing out his and his fellow monkey's name in the ledgers of life and death would allow them to exceed their normal lifespan. Su Wukong was 342 years of age when he wiped his name off the ledger.
    2. Once you are past dying due to normal aging, at 500 year of age you experience the First Calamity - lightning bolt from the heaven will seek you out. Magics like 72 transformations and cloud riding can be used to dodge this calamity.
    3. At 1000 year of age, you experience the Second Calamity - ethereal fire emerges from your feet and seek to burn your organs to ash.
    4. At 1500 years of age, you experience the Third Calamity - ethereal wind from back of your head seeks to blow and disburse your senses
    5. If you are still alive at 2000 years of age, First Calamity happens again and so on. The Jade Emperor is mentioned in the book to have already experienced 1750 calamities so far.
    Second and Third Calamity cannot be avoided with any normal means, they have to be endured with the aid of special immortality granting items, such as the immortality peaches, the golden pills, the human baby shaped ginseng fruit and as the rumours go, Sanzang's flesh. It's not stated in the book but later works (including BMW) assumes from Sansang's flesh connection that all such methods of cheating death involves stealing life from someone else. Hence the game implies the golden pills are actually made from yaoguai.
    This assumption of immortality being only achievable by taking life of others and all the members of the celestial court are actually part taking in these dark rituals are one of the origins of people having a "black myth" read of JttW.

    • @Temstar04
      @Temstar04 2 месяца назад +18

      The once every 500 year peach party is the most important event in the celestial court since that's when all the members receive the peach that allows them to continue to enjoy immortality. It's kind of like a pay day for all the immortals. They honour the Jade Emperor and let him boss them around and the peach is their pay in exchange.

    Ah, I feel like the Mandrill chief story line is kinda underrated, a lone monkey on a journey to revive what is essentially her adoptive son, if an extremely overpowered one. She's the one that taught the monkey king to monkey, after all.
    And for her to laugh it all up like that when she sees her "son" already reincarnated right before her eyes, or maybe when she saw the destined one and realized the absurdity of it all, maybe both? Kind of a "learn to let go" story mixed in there as well.

    21:30 Interesting fact: you may be wondering why the four heavenly kings of Buddhism obey the celestial court's commands of Daoism. Because in ancient China, Buddhism and Taoism, in order to assert their legitimacy and gain acceptance among more people, they will claim that rival god originally belongs to their religion, but with a lower status.
    For example, the four heavenly kings of Buddhism, in Taoism their main work is just a security guard of The Celestial Court‘s gate.
    After a few hundred years, most people have accepted these assumptions. So you can see that many Chinese gods belong to both Buddhism and Daoism.

    22:40 Actually the weapon Wang Lingguan wields is indeed referred to as "whip鞭" in Chinese. Apparently ancient chinese people use a solid metal rod to whip horses, and the name stuck.
    Now in the modern days the word "whip鞭" is more often used to refer to, well, the soft rope-like whip. But when in the context of talking about traditional chinese weapons, that solid metal rod is the "whip".

    The actual translation is 72 terrestrial killers, based on the 72 malevolent constellation deities. Most members of the heavenly court, like Zhu Baije, practice the 36 heavenly spirits, based on the 36 benevolent constellation deities that are at war with the 72 terrestrial killers. This is referencing the Buddhist holy number of 108.

    I have a different interpretation about the mind relic though. I feel like the final relic wasn’t given by Erlang. Instead, when he died Wukong’s mind passed through the cycle of life and was born again as The Destined One. The mind relic was always there with him. The reason I say this is because whether or not we fight Erlang, when we enter the final arena the Old Monkey says we are the mind of Wukong, this makes me believe that the mind relic is always with him. Erlang gave him the ability to see through deception with which he was able to see through the deception of the headband and having defeated the shell of Wukong, with the help of Erlang’s eye he saw through it and Wukong’s memories came to him which made him realise that the headband is merely a trick to keep him in control.

    • @theanxoiushero800
      @theanxoiushero800 2 месяца назад +10

      The way I see it. The destined one is a reincarnation of wukong, more or less essentially being wukong except without his memories. This is the reason he is able to obtain and absorb the power of all the relics, as they essentially belong to him. As you’ve said the destined one more or less is the final “mind relic” I’ve interpreted it as the destined one maintaining the will of wukongs mind hence he was ‘destined’ to complete this new journey as many others before him probably did not have wukongs “mind” or will. By defeating erlang, the destined one (or wukong reincarnated) was essentially able to fully realise and restore his mind with his past lives memories and therefore understand what wukongs (or his own) true mission was and abandon the headband at the end therefore getting the true ending

    I loved this entire series, thank you so much for all the love you put into explaining the ties to all the bosses! I did have a few questions if bandit or anyone else could clarify I'd much appreciate it!
    1. So we know The destined one gains the circlet after the ending of the game, is this more of a game symbolic thing? Because it'd seem like a waste if the Destined One were to just don the Circlet again after all that work, or does the circlet not have that binding power anymore?
    2. The Destined one has all of Wukong's relics, and his Ryu Jingu Bang and armor and skills, but does he have all those layers of immortality as well? I feel like he'd at least have his name written out of the book of death, unless that was just the immediate monkeys that were under the rule of Wukong when he struck their names from the book...

    • @therranolleo468
      @therranolleo468 2 месяца назад

      The destined one only gets the circlet IF we don't do the secret fight with Erlang; without Erlang, we're missing Wukong's memories; hence, we don't know the true purpose of our journey , and the old monkey simply puts the circlet back on our heads, thus rendering us (and by extension, the reincarnation of Wukong) to once again be Heaven's slave. this can be considered the bad end
      if we complete the Erlang fight we get Wukong's memories, and we don't get the circlet put back on our head, hence truly freeing Wukong from Heaven's command

    The five brothers of Erlang in the game actually comes from Fengshen Yanyi, the names of them: Chap1 Chang Hao, Chap2 Zhu Zizhen, Chap3 Yang Xian, Chap4 Wu Long, Chap5 Jin Dasheng.
    The surname of them pronounce just like the origina animals in Chinese: snake (Changchong), boar, goat, centipede and bull

    I believe patriarch Bohdi made a secret appearance in the journals. There's a saying, "a Bohdi tree in a single leave", and I think he appeared to the Black Wind Mountain Keeper, and hinted to his own name by leaving a single leave.

    A DLC where we fight through heaven and get layers of immortality would go pretty hard

    That leak about 13 chapters is even weirder now because the scene of him being killed, perfectly sets up 6 chapters/bosses.

    The reason why Erlang shen and Son Wukong prefer to each other as sworn brother, because in they battle they make a bet on whoever lost will call the winner big brother.

    I’m pretty sure the Feng-tail General is a giant cricket, not a locust. I believe it’s because, and I may be wrong here, but crickets were seen as a sign of good fortune in ancient China.

    I’ve been hearing that there’s been multiple names for the Supreme Celestial Inspector, but can someone please explain his background in both the novel and Chinese mythology?
