Anime never goes into it, but in the novel to compensate her weak body, Tanya extensively used body enhancing spells. They have pretty severe mood altering side effects. So most of her blood rage and being overly excited in battle is basically effect of magic drugs.

The cinematography in this show is crazy good. In example, pay attention to when Tanya fights, she always appears to be above her enemies, even when she isn’t
Just some notes, cause I love these series, but the anime leaves out a lot... Original name was "Youjo Senki", roughly "Young Girls War Story".... very different feel. Its never said in the anime, but part of why she "goes crazy" in combat, iirc, is that she is basically doping herself up with magic, she's literally high as a kite to push herself forward. Also, the pillbox thing wasn't her direct plan, in the original, they were sent to the rear, but nothing was ever said about them again. It was an idle comment of another soldier that he felt pillboxes were just sitting targets. They kinda took the "evil" thing a bit crazy far in the anime, and added way more action than the original medium, which sadly loses some of the story.
I get it though. Youjo Senki is a great story, but lets be honest, nobody would watch a faithful adaptation. It'd end up as one of those random anime who'd never get a season 2. The novel is great for people who like war and politics, but it's just not what the general population cares about. I wish they kept the brutality and power system of the manga though.
I don't think they mention it in the show, but magic in this world is also capable of giving body enhancements, which is why there is no age restriction for recruiting mages. After all even teenagers or children could beat an adult in a fistfight with a magically enhanced body

7:50 Tanya is actually wrong here in fact, one of the reasons the US military is such an effective fighting force as demonstrated in operation desert storm is that the US military has a Fishel doctrine that allows soldiers to ignore orders to pursue targets of opportunity based on their own judgment and of course, if you ignored us and it turns out poorly, you’re still gonna be punished assuming you don’t end up dead however, during operation desert storm for example, I forget the name of the commander off the top of my head, but they saw an opportunity to push a enemy tank division with their own division of M1 Abrams, and due to the commanders, quick, thinking, and noticing of the opportunity, he ignored orders and pushed forward, took basically no losses and wiped out the enemies entire main force. Tanya as well as specifically the side she’s fighting for in this anime is more of an authoritarian top down structure like Germany was at the time of World War 1&2 so her reaction to what they did is actually pretty realistic for the time but it’s actually the wrong call if you want to have an actually effective fighting force. Is it a risk yes but it seems the benefits outweigh the potential risk because the alternative as seen here is the punish people who are inspired for the fight, making good decisions in the heat of the moment, resulting in benefits victory, or at least saving the lives of your own men through various methods. So when you’re an authoritarian dictatorship in your troops are mostly if not entirely only fighting for a mere paycheck or because they’re worried you’ll shoot them in the back of the head. If they don’t comply, this top down structure is necessary because of that however, when you have an entirely volunteer fighting force like America does, there’s no need for that top down structure to be so on shakingly rigid, and it leads to the massive effectiveness of the US military as seen today.

You are entirely correct. The world it takes place in is not "our" world. But it is basically a fictional version of it, in the state of world war 1. The empire is basically germany, then there´s the commonwealth (Great Britain), the Francois Republic (france), Legadonia Entente Alliance (the northern States like Finland and Norway), The Principality of Dacia (roughly romania), the Russy federation (Russia) and the Unified States (USA). The borders from promotional material don´t exactly line up with real world borders, even if you consider changes due to the war, but it is intentionally extremely close. Also little fun fact: another youtuber tha twatched this show also (as many others) couldn´t pronounce Lt. Serebryakow's name and named her "Lt. In this world the first world war did not happen when it did in our real world, so it is their first world war, but roundabout halfway between when our first and second world wars happened. Between this and the slightly divergent technological development of their world, you'll see a mix of WW1 and WW2 technologies. Small arms, artillary pieces and ships (the manga had well recognizable Nassau and Helgoland dreadnoughts, not sure aobut the cruisers depicted in the anime) from WW1, with tanks that were only built shortly before WW2. And the Empire isn't just Germany, but the combined territories of what in WW1 would have been Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, at least parts of Poland, most of Austria-Hungary and a few bits of Italy. The grin at the end is something the anime came up with, in the novel and manga she was completely emotionless and matter-of-fact about it the two trouble makers dying. That being said, putting the troublemakers into a position to be killed is not what it appears as at the first glance. They disobeyed the orders of multiple superiors (at least Lt. Schwartzkopf and Tanya herself, though the orders probably came through from even higher on), multiple times, which means by strict application of their military law, she would have had to put them up on charges right away. But instead she offered to have them transfered away from the front, without any punishment (beyond the symbolic one), which they refused in the form of disobeying yet another order. At this point, Tanya had every right to either once again have them put in front of a military court - which would have ended either in a dishonorable discharge or more likely execution - or to execute them herself on the spot. If either had happened, their families would have gotten nothing, except ridicule from the more patriotic of their neighbors. By dying "heroically in the line of duty" on the other hand, their families will receive monetary compensation and praise. And more so, any mage that dies in the line of duty gets a posthumous promotion by two ranks, meaning their families are now due even more money. So while at the first glance, Tanya seems utterly merciless and vindictive (especially with how the anime depicts it), in truth ironically she was being more merciful and even kind than most other officers in her position would have been.

For everyone who love this anime, go read Manga!
The detail and beautiful drawing is very gooooood
Maybe for the next show you can check Golden Kamuy or Gate JSDF, both started with war and also good shows
Great reaction!
Neel you're in for a ride.
