  • Hi, this 'How To' video shows you how to make RJ11 and RJ12 cables using flat 4 & 6 core cable and also using CAT5e cable for a good quality ADSL Broadband connection. It shows how to wire both 'Straight and 'Crossed' cables.
    Thanks Vince

    I worked in IT for over 40 years and amazingly never made a cable. The video not only provided all the information needed but also plenty of hints and tips. I have now made my first 12" cable which worked first time. I wasted 1 RJ12 in the process and I could hear Vince saying "well you were warned - don't cut the cables too short!"
    Thanks for your teaching,

    watched your videos and doubled my speed by replacing my 10m cheap adsl lead and made a cat5 5m cable out of an old network lead I had. I can't believe
    how much of a difference just a wire can make. thank you next a adsl face plate 🖒

    All these CAT5e videos are much appreciated. I have now CAT5e'd the main desktop, including the RJ11 to RJ11 cable at the router. I also took the opportunity to make a CAT5e patch cable with good quality stranded copper cable; the cheap bought one I was using was likely CCA. The internet connection feels much quicker than it did with the powerline networking I was using previously.

    Hi Vince thanks for video,after struggling with poor BT broadband for 15 yrs because we are on a rural line and 1 mile to cabinet,and having various callouts to replace faulty O/H cables and corroded joints,I now get 1.9Mbs (was .7Mbs)funny part is when engineer plugs into test skt' he gets 2.1Mbs ,when he uses my supplied with Hub flat lead its 1.9Mbs,so the crap supplied lead is losing me .2Mbs,engineer admits the leads are rubbish but all BT supply,so have toyed with idea of cat5 lead to minimise losses,after having watched your video I now know its possible,thanks a lot Alex

    This is super helpful-- Thank you for taking the time to do this video! My only complaint is that the camera moves around so much, I'm guessing on half of what you're doing and working from verbal instruction mostly because I'd get quite a bit sea sick and frustrated when trying to focus on what you were doing. Sorry :( Other than that, the instructions were what I was looking for, so Thumbs up!

    Hello i have a BT fibre line in my house and a Huawei 24 port network switch for a fully hardwired house for all the Smart TV's etc.Obviously a fibre connection is stable but before in the old days it wasnt
    Just out of curiosity i knocked up a crossed Cat5e lead with RJ11's between the BT hub and the NTL5 faceplate and got a decent improvement on an already fantastic line!
    Before dowwnloads were 69-70 after 71-72 Before uploads were 10-12 after 14-16 So for very little effort a slightly better connection and i am chuffed!

    my experience with the same tester wasn't good for RJ11/RJ12 plugs. One wire always hinted at faulty, but I eventually got to the point of believing my tester wasn't telling the truth! I decided using the RJ45 sockets to test the RJ11/RJ12 cables and the cable tested ok. My bin was rattling with the quantity of RJ12 plugs I had just cut off because I considered I was making mistakes!

    Nice video, but i have to give you some advice: Talk to the camera guy and decide on some positions (like full scene, closeup postion A, closeup B, etc with preset zoom levels and so on) and then stick to those positions. That will solve the out-of-focus, and camera-shake-and-fly-around-trying-to-find-the-target problems :)

      Hi, yes you can use CAT6 cable but you will be unlikely to notice any difference because your current lead is probably cat5e so it will still be quicker than current broadband speeds.

    Great video once again Vince. Was trying to checkout your Ebay shop but the links on your web page doesn't work. 😓. Do you still make cables? I'm looking for RJ12 rounded cat 5 cable 6pins 6 cores to connect to pro 9 pin Female D-sub socket solder connector rs232 for the works portable printer. I have found flat cable RJ12 on ebay but the DB9 connector strain relief is for rounded cable not flat cable. If you could make me a 6 core 6 pin RJ12 round cable. I would be happy to pay for your time. I hope this makes sense. Kind Regards David.

I have the crimping Tool & RJ11 connectors, can I use this cable as a broadband ADSL cable? If so what would the colour order be? Any help appreciated. Thank you.

    What if your internet uses 2 pairs in one cable. would you cross them or wire them straight? My internet comes over 2 pairs so i can get faster internet. I'll be using cat5e cable and terminating them with RJ11 to run about 20ft of cable from the wall jack to the DSL modem/router in my room.

    I have 4 port application. I am coming in on RJ11/12 DSL modem 100 meters away and exiting on 3 port RJ45. I am termination into a wall plate with 3 port RJ45 going to one bedroom; Garage, and spare to the attic. I am not sure if they are crossed or not. I have some of the tooling and connectors. I was going to build around 5E now I am rethinking this for Cat 6a or E.?

    Can this be used to connect a wireless router Ethernet to an old phone line for Wi-Fi? As in Replace my dsl modem and connect my adsl Ethernet WiFi router directly?

  • @Scorpio_1974
    @Scorpio_1974 8 лет назад

    We have AT&T ADSL the cat3 cable is ran to the garage attic. The cat3 looks like a cat5 because of the color codes it's a 5 pair. white gray & gray is added & not sure what is used for. I am baffled why it is called 3 when it looks exactly like a cat5 has all 4 pairs it looks the same size and are copper. I assume it is capable to be used as cat5 when U-verse finally be instead hopefully by next year sometime but at the mean time I want to fix this mess up here. Anyways When it was added to the attic & is poorly & I do mean poorly shielded it's rigged on with a telephone line regular down the wall panel. The problem is when they ran the line it's to short to run down any walls. I am re-running it & doing away with that telephone to run cat5. My question is should I use cat3 keystone? Since this cat3 has blue & white blue. I assume I can use cat5 blue & white blue? But punch it down on cat-3 keystone? But if I am correct RED goes with Blue & Green goes with White blue. This is when I plug in the telephone line. I thought it was very stupid of them to leave about 3 feet no joke!. That is why I can only come up with Keystone up in the attic & keystone the other end when I drop it down to panel it. Good idea?

    Hello. If I made a CAT5E cable with one RJ11 plug, could I terminate the other end into an ADSL faceplate (A and B terminals) and if so what colour wire would I put into the A And B terminal. Thanks and keep up the good work

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  9 лет назад

      Andrew Hume Hi, yes you can hardwire one end into the ADSL faceplate (nice and neat that way). The white/blue wire goes to A and the Blue wire goes to B.Many thanks Vince

    For modem connection for VDSL2 for what I need fat Cat 5e cable with 8 wires inside ? as I know 2 wires are enough and maybe will be better to use telephone cable YTKSY 1x2x0,5 its much thinner that Cat5e UTP.

    hi vince when making a cat 5e adsl cable is the clouor oder for the wires to go in the rj11 the same for every house

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  8 лет назад

      Hi, in the UK yes, and as far as I know the rest of the world also use the middle 2 pins on the RJ11 on ADSL.
      BUT....you don't have to use the blue pair, any colour pair will work for example the green pair of the orange pair.
      Thanks.

    Will a Cat5e With Shileding help with RJ11 plugs? I have had BT infinity with Hub 5 installed a few months now and My router has never stayed in sync for more than 7 days. I am currently using Flat RJ11.

      +MegaGHWiga Shielded cable can help if there is a lot of external noise but you may struggle to fit RJ11 plugs onto a shielded cable because it tends to be thicker than normal UTP cable. Normally normal UTP cable if fine.Thanks Vince

    Where I can get a rj12 round cable entry shielded plug with strain relief? There are thousands of unshielded and rj11 shielded but I can't find anything. I intend to make a vdsl cable to replace the cheap flat one supplied with modems/routers using leftover cat6 shielded from a loft installation.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  9 лет назад

      +majnu100 Hi, I haven't seen any shielded RJ12 round entry plugs, I think you will really struggle to fit shielded cable into a rj12 plug as shielded is another 1 or 2mm bigger than normal cat6 and normal UTP cat6 is still a very tight squeeze. Also I have never found any RJ11/12 strain relief boots...If you do ever come across them please let me know.Many thanks Vince

    Great Video/channel mate 😃 I'm a Gamer looking to get the most out of my broadband connection, I already live very close to the exchange getting 74.4 Mbps download on speedtest.net but want to get closer to the speed that is rated in my broadband router settings of 79.99 Mbps
    I'm pretty sure that your 1m RJ11 TO RJ11 CAT5e should help me with that in theory 😎
