I made this last night, and I must say I learned... some things.
One, when using a mandolin/slicer, use the guard unless you want to lose use of your thumb for the next week or so.
Two, if you want to take a pretty picture of it at all, don't call the family down for dinner.
Three, it is sooo good. I gave it a little Italian twist by using Fontina and Asiago cheeses, put a couple shredded garlic cloves in, and used half double cream, half milk and doubled the cheese amount. It was so good. I have one bowl of leftovers (after the family got to it) and I practically had to put a flag in it to get it.
Britney Rezendes Glad you guys enjoyed it! :D Be careful with the slicer!!
Ben speaking french is the most attractive thing ever!
Girl you just read my mind ... Not creepy at all . I need a life TnT
As a native French speaker... I have to respectfully disagree
why aren't you guys on television! for the past two weeks i've been watching your videos, and I admit I am slightly addicted! is there a support group for something like this?
Tim Flyzik Haha the only support is to get more involved on Twitter and talk about food even more :D
Tim Тимофей The
Ben is honestly the best one from Sorted. He's smart, can cook, play guitar, speak French...
And rattle a headboard like a sailor on leave...
Can also juggle, do close up magic and solve a rubix cube in 5 minutes. He is incredibly attractive.
Something (my tummy) is telling me that a little bit (a lot) of bacon bits layering will take that thing up a notch. I mean, we never really stick to the traditional recipes anyway! Yum!
SORTED GotMeSorted Can't argue with that!
I have done this with white and sweet potatoes, alternating them in the baking dish
ledogae that sounds really good!
Dear Ben,
You speak English, silly!!
French isn't the only language you can speak!
isla thomas He said, "French is the only language I can speak...a little bit of." :)
For anyone wondering, the word pomme means apple, or more correctly by French Grammar, le pomme, but if you take pomme de terre, it means potato in English, but translated, it actually means the apple of the ground.
*la pomme
Pauline Saumade Sorry. Uni Level classes kind of make you forget the simpler things.
I know, plus french must be hard to learn! Glad I was raised speaking it daily, wouldn't want to have to learn it all with the grammar, the 'tu' and 'vous', and especially the male and female... issue!
Pauline Saumade Must be easier for you then. I grew up learning 2 full languages and parts of another, so learning French was not as hard, but it still was a completely new direction for me.
Wow, that's a chance I would've loved having : growing up with two languages! Since I want to be a french teacher in England, I definitely hope my children will be bilingual by the time they speak! I just find learning new languages is the best way to open up to the rest of the world instead of simply minding our own business! ;)
Lol at Barry subtly insulting Ben whenever he has the chance. (PS. Glad to see that my years spent learning French were actually useful!)
I love Ben more and more after every episode! He is especially charming while speaking French! Xoxo from USA!
BEST part of this video (and of any videos ever made by the sorted crew!!): Ben speaking French. There is just something about a British guy speaking French for us French girls that you just can't resist !!
I don't like potatoes much, but this is one of the dish with potatoes I really enjoy! Love the little twists on it!
je suis français, et ça me fait plaisir de vous voir parler de la cuisine de mon pays, je tient à ajouter, que nous les français, on oublie souvent quelles sont les specialités de notre pays
For people from Britain, your French accent is accually good!
I absolutely love Potato Dauphinoise! I ALWAYS put tarragon in mine!
I just made the Citrus-Ginger Salmon for my family, and everybody raved. Plus, it came out of the oven looking GORGEOUS.
My family is Acadien French from Nova Scotia, and we do something similar to this, except we call it "scalloped potatoes" and we usually serve it with boiled ham.
I stumbled upon this recipe because I wanted to try a different scalloped potatoes recipes. I like that this is done in an oven, usually my family uses a electric frying pan, but I don't have one and I wanted to make scalloped potatoes.
I am FOR SURE going to try this. :) yum yum
You should bring back Sorted Eats, probably my favourite little series from you guys!
I am so excited for having learned this incredible French classic. Vive La France!...
Vive Sorted Food!.
“Controversially we are not adding any garlic.”
“Stop being controversial”. 🤣
But then they wouldn't be Sorted, right? :P
I made this yesterday for part of Christmas lunch, had to just go with gruyere and emmentaler as we don't really have many of the special french cheese options in Australia. Thankfully this video exists as the online instructions were lacking in spots, but it turned out great! Quite different to a usual potato bake we make here.
Happily served 7 as a side
That neckerchief brings back memories. I haven't worn mine since I took a baking class under a Master Baker who was really old school and strict. I'm glad I don't have to wear that in the line!
Barry's knife skills have improved so much! I felt so proud when he chopped those herbs :)
I LOVE this series!
In my family we love eating quiche or home-made pizza. Most of the time I put leek, carrots, onions, zucchini and goats cheese in the quiche and it's so tasty. I know it sounds like a lot of vegetables for one quiche but once you cook them in a pan for a couple minutes, the vegetables wilt down and everything fits into the pastry. The combination of the sweet carrots and the goats cheese is just great.
Where I come from we call it potato bake and this is my favorite dish in the world!!!
Every time I watch Come Dine with Me someone is making Dauphinoise potatoes. I finally know how to make it now. It does look yummy and all the ingredients are easy to find
I'm so gonna make this potato dish next Sunday. Thanks guys!
This is my favorite cooking channel. I'm gonna have to recommend my mom to this because she likes trying new recipes. Definitely trying this one!
I usually make this as a warm and quick main, adding layers of thinly sliced ham and mozzarella cheese, and putting just herbs and seasoning in the cream! Delicious and super easy!
For those wondering about how to do it without a food processor: if you slice off the potato bottom so that it stays flat on the cutting board, use a sharp knife and are reeeaaaally careful with your fingers, you can get pretty thin chips even cutting them by hand. Leave the dish in the oven an extra few minutes, and the result will be just as melt-in-your-mouth as if you'd done it with a processor!
As always, dear Sorted, you're great!
My mum makes Pommes Dauphinoise every fall & winter for potluck dinners and holidays. She doesn't do the heavy cream part, but definitely uses lots of cheese (Emmenthal, Gruyere, and some cheddar usually) and instead of the herb blend uses caramelized onions. It is so good.
OMG Ben speaking french I think I'm dying a little bit
Making this with cave aged Grúyere is absolutely stunning.
We always add red onion in the layers, adds that extra texture mmmm one of my fave potato dishes
Finally! A good recipe for potato dauphinoise.
Binge watching these videos is like binge eating without the guilt.
ben speaking in french is just heart melting
like cheese
Mon Dieux !!!! C est Super !!! Bring back memories .... slightly worried about the way Barry is wearing his beret ??? #camp !! A Plus mes amis !!! Bisous E xxx
Omg that looks amazing! Definitely have to try this recipe. Dauphinoise potatoes is one of my faves!
I think sorted food have the friendliest fan base :)
I love it when you speak French!
the only disadvantage of watching you guys is that i'm always starving afterwards! :p
You have no idea how excited I was that I could understand you at the beginning :) guess my middle school French isn't completely gone haha
I've just had my wisdom teeth out and watching this is probably not the best idea because I'm absolutely starving, but I can't stop watching!!!
looks nice, well done guys!
For the french joke if anyone is lost. Elle s'appelle is 'her name is' while il s'appelle is 'his name is'..so Barry was making a crack at Ben :P
Loving the French look, gentlemen.
thanks for a great video, for some reason i was waiting for Ben to say 'bon appétit' at 4:17 lol,
my dad loves to cook and he makes a dish with chicken known as tandoori chicken along with a kind of bread he like to call bakes my family enjoy this with a fresh salad, another dish my dad makes for my family is like a stew made with the broth of chicken bones, copped vegetables such ass leeks, new potatoes, carrots, green beans, cauliflower, broccoli and sometimes mushrooms along with his herbs & spices, chicken pieces or pork, served in a bowl onto of rice.
Le vrai nom est en faite Gratin dauphinois. En tout cas super recette. Thank you.
this looks absolutely yummy and something I can actuality make. thank you +SORTED food.
I love having dauphinoise potatoes with a lovely rare steak, mint peas with lardons and a lovely pepercorn sauce
When Ben speaks French its so cute. Du bon travail! :D
Love this recipe! Thank you for sharing it.❤
I absolutely love potato dishes. I would have not skipped the garlic, though.
love Ben speaking French!
Scalloped potatoes! :D Don't leave me alone with it....
We call this "scalloped potatoes" in the States. Always a favorite with some bacon or ham, and also good with hot dogs if you have a smaller budget. Didn't know this originated in France before now, but good to know.
SORTED indeed. That looks amazing.
I was hungry before I watched this. Now I'm ravenous.
Oh man those potatoes sound so good. I'm definitely going to have to make this with a nice garden salad on the side. nomnomnomnom
“I’m going to make scallop potatoes for the first time. I wonder if sorted made it already” lol
Actually, the dish you cooked is called "gratin Dauphinois" in French. And we do put eggs and cheese in the cream, because it is delicious! And some people I know put a layer of bacon (or "lard") at the bottom of the dish, and then more cheese on the top. :)
Camille Lacassagne Who can argue with extra bacon and cheese? :)
My family eat dinner together every night and there is eight of us so every night can be quite fun! Both my parents are chef's so dinner is always family style and delis! And may I add my mum makes a mean dauphinoise potatoes!
I made this for my family a couple times :D great reception, somehow nothing beats having your family polish off the food you spent effort to make :D
"There's plenty here for four..."
I'd eat the whole thing.
That bottle that had the water in it, So cute.....
That is some relatively well-practiced French! Tres bien!
My mum is French, so some things we like to eat are: Tomate farcie and also our special family recipe Pizza (nothing like normal Pizza) which is usually served with a quiche. :D
I live by myself these days, but when we get together, its either steaks on the grill with baked potatoes and fresh tomatoes, or holidays where we have turkey and loads of side dishes.
This reminds me a LOT of scallop potatoes xD
We've actually found whenever we make this that if you let the top start to burn just slightly, that's when it all starts to taste the best and has the best texture!
Oh gosh!!! Yum! I need to try this recipe!!!
YUM! Thanks guys, I've been wanting to know how to make this for quite some time. I will definitely be trying this one out at some point!
I love these potatoes! I'm definitely trying this tonight! :)
For my family dinners, we let the slice of potatoes soak in water for a minimum of 24 hours to take out the starch, it lets out a wonderful taste. And you can try to add nutmeg or cinnamon to bring it to a whole new level...
Thank you guys for your amazing work, maybe you will bring down the "british people can't cook" joke down ! (A classic in France :D)
Classic! I just LOVE it!
I've actually never heard of potato dauphinoise? But scalloped potatoes were a staple in my house growing up. My favourite to eat left over cold the next day! No cream or egg or herbs or anything fancy though. Not even cheese! I think most have cheese? Just a simple roux-based white sauce. Butter, flour, and milk. And layer the potatoes with minced onion.
Awesome guys! As always.
I am French and it's so funny to hear you guys speak French :p
Ben, you speak awesome french!
You guys are adorable! Great recipe
For the top I add a lot of emmental cheese to crip it up!!!!!! Yummmyyyy !!
That looks simply delicious!
This dish looks like a traditional dish from Peru called pastel de papa, is the same preparation but without the herbs. This usually is served with stuffed rocoto a super spicy chilli. Love your recipies!!! :)
Always wanted to try a potato Gratin or Dauphinoise. And it worked! Want to try it again now with little tweaks to see what differences it makes. Maybe less egg, more cheese (obviously). Maybe add some bacon bits in the mix.
Oh my goodness! That looks so delicious! I didn't know you could slice potatoes thinly with a food processor! It's so miraculous! Haha! Thanks for the info! :D
You know what brings this type of dish to the next level ? duck confit ! In my family, we really love the "gratin de confit de canard" (duck confit gratin). Simple to process ! cut the potato the same way you did, very thinly. Then, put a layer of potato on the bottom of your plate, then some confit that you shredded into pieces, then an other layer of potato, then duck, and a final layer of potato. Pour some milk mixed with crème fraîche onto the preparation, so it won't dry out (with pepper if needed, but no salt, the confit is salty enough). If you're a really indecent person, you can add some shredded cheese on top. For "gratiner", you know. Esthetic purposes I guess (and a lipid apocalypse!)
Gracefuly place it in your oven, and voilà ! :D
Definitely making this for our next family get together! (:
If before watching this video I was hungry now I'm starving!
Omg that looks incredible. I wish I had my own house and kitchen so I can cook something like that!!
In South Africa we call this Potato Bake, you can actually buy powdered sauces in various flavours that you mix with milk. My mum always made it with sliced potatoes, generous slices of bacon, sliced butternut and diced onion, as well as just the right amount of Potjiekos Seasoning in between each layer. Would love to see your take on some traditional South African dishes like Babotie, Bunny Chow, Chakalaka, Koeksusters, Meltert, Malva Pudding (perfect Christmas pud), Tamatiebredie, Potjiekos etc
Love Potato Dauphinoise.. also love Lyonnaise potatoes.. have them quite a lot alongside some roast lamb :)
Always going for nutmeg and lovage with potatoes~
Haha I just had this dish for dinner :p Yes, I'm french :)
Anyway, potatoes + cheese = nothing can go wrong !
I eat with my family a beef pie that my dad created it's sooo gooood
I guess three years of french in high school did me well while watching this
This is heaven am

Haha amazing, im doing that all the time at home, by the way im from germany, but i didn't know its from france.
But it does taste great, love it
OMG! I want that in my belly now!!!
Me and my housemate recently tried our own dauphinoise (as opposed to co-op's ready made) so will definitely be trying this!
nice french. It was good
In love with Ben. Way too adorable to handle.
i honestly dont mind if ben and barry kept cooking with their hats/ toques on, for future sorted videos. THEY LOOK SO CUTE!
