Hi Baby Back Maniac, Thanks. 1) yes, depending on the friction arm or cold shoe mount you use, but yes, just turn it to the side. 2) It can be flipped, but it is not automatic - you have to manually go into the menu and flip it. I don't think this would be an upgrade across the board from the SmallHD Focus except for maybe the size of the screen.

Greetings and thanks for and thanks for the detailed and balanced review! I'm curious as to your opinion of it as a multi-view monitor on the ATEM Mini Pro? I know it's a bit small for maybe the best studio use of that, but I have a portable rig (kind of like a DJ case) setup for outdoor multicam live-streaming and am considering this monitor for that. Small & bright for portable and outdoor use is great, but larger seems the way to go for the ATEM? Thanks again for your great content.
I think it will depend on how good your eyesight is and how far away from you it will be. I usually just use it to display the program output, not multi view. If I do multi view, I use a 24 in monitor.
@@curtisjudd Thanks, and your comment makes me realize that what I probably want more than multi-view really is program OR even just preview any 1 camera without switching to it. This size would be ideal for that I suppose!
CTKPH Online on the Mini Pro and Mini Pro ISO, you can switch the HDMI output to whichever camera you like without affecting the program. Just be sure to switch back to program view or you can get mightily confused.
Shame there is no top mounting thread as I hang my monitors, be good to get a cage also but I'm guessing this would block the light sensor ! Great review !
Curtis, I’m late to the party I see. I like the idea of using a monitor for live streaming. I currently use OBS for Teams/Zoom calls with my a6400, camlink4k and Deity boom mic. One of the few reasons I use OBS is to get LUTS to my video calls. Could I use something like this with LUTS in monitor and output to calls through camlink via hdmi? Would be nice to not have to open OBS and take more away from the performance of the computer. Thoughts?
Thanks for the helpful review. Question - Given that you have one or more Black magic design cameras, how were you not tempted by their BMD Assist monitor that now does live focus pulling and color control of this cameras? One more Question. Another RUclipsr sold his 3 BMD cams and bought a stable of Canon 500’s As I recall. He said he could not get get the 3 BMD cams set to the same color. Perhaps color mngt. of live stream cams is a big topic for a future video?
Good idea for a future video. I use a Canon C200 and set of Panasonic GH5 cams as overhead and secondary for my livestreams so I haven't been exposed to color matching issues with my BMD Pocket 4K and 6K, but good idea to look into that. I didn't want an expensive recorder with a fan in it for my livestreams. I've been tempted by the BMD monitor/recorders recently, but have less need now that I have the C200 which will take over as the A cam on corporate shoots once the pandemic settles. For me, the P6K is mainly for RUclips videos at this point.
@@curtisjudd Hey Curtis, I'm curious why the switch from the Ursa Mini to C200 as the A cam? Are you shooting Raw for projects that generate a lot of files, or using the 8 bit codec?
Great timing for this review! Was just about to pull the trigger on a Shinobi for my GH5. How accurate is the focus peaking on the LUT7S? I currently have a 5" Feelworld monitor and the focus peaking isn't that accurate at all. It seems to have a wider tolerance when indicating focus than what it should. A lot of my shots came ouy burry but were indicated as in focus by the focus peaking. Was going to go with the shinobi but this may be a better option for me. Lastly, I'm really appreciatig your reviews. Definitely helped me with numerous gear purchases over the years.
Hi Mike, it seemed good here - didn't run into any focus trouble but to be fair, I am using a Canon C200 and spend a LOT of time in face detect AF. You might consider buying from a retailer you can return the monitor if you aren't happy with its performance.
@@curtisjudd that is a fantastic idea, ill probably just Amazon it to have that return option. The plastic housing is definitely a negative for be. To be honest I'm not sure what it is in the shinobi, I'll have to look into that. Thanks! As far as Features and usability goes, do you find this on par with Atomos?
Curtis Keith Kuhn here. You are the guy that can help me. I will keep it very simple. I'm using my Sony NX5U video camera. My video camera has all the bells and whistles such as peeking zebra etc. My eyesight is depleting terribly so I cannot see my little flip out monitor from the camera anymore. What I really need to know, Will this monitor show my camera menu ? That would be perfect if it did. If not can you recommend a monitor that will, at least seven or eight inch monitor That won't break the bank. I have extra Sony batteries so that's not a problem. Thanks Keith Kuhn
Hi Keith, yes this will display the menu and settings overlays IF your camera sends them out its HDMI port. Most will. You’ll just want to check your camera’s manual.

Great review Curtis! Any idea if there have been competitors releasing monitors on par with the Portkeys BM5? I'm looking for a monitor that can control my BMPCC 4K, and that seems to be the only option.
@@weightlessfilms5651 The app of which I'm aware allows you to control some of the camera settings but I don't think it streams the picture, unfortunately. And I think I heard that there's a third part app you can use to focus which I haven't tried, but sounds interesting.
What’s your opinion on the latency? I have the Teradek Ace 500 and it has almost no latency. Will I be able to pull focus on this monitor without any issues? I have the Tilta Nucleus M follow focus.
I find that the latency of the output from the camera is the BIGGEST consideration. This monitor is ok, but the camera is going to be the biggest factor in overall latency.
Hi Curtis. I have just bought this monitor and the screen image is superb. I have a Canon 90D and there doesn't seem to be any way to have the monitor on and an image on the camera's screen at the same time. Is this normal or am I missing something. It's a bit of a pain as I can't acess the camera's on screen menu's without unplugging the monitor. Do you know of any work arounds please?
Hi Roger, This sounds like a limitation of the 90D, perhaps. Might be best to contact Canon support to see if there is a way to enable both to work at the same time. Best wishes!
Thanks for sharing. Quick question, what does it mean when you say it can take 4k at 24 fps? Does that mean that I can only use the camera to record on that resolution? and is there anyway I can adjust what the input will be so for example I can shoot at 4k 60fps and have the monitor display it HD? Thanks!
These display limitations are typical of field monitors, especially in this price range. If you need a monitor for 4K 60 or 120fps, you will need to shop well above the pro consumer grade gear.
Curtis Judd Hi Curtis - I’ve found the mounting arm a little difficult to manipulate - do you know if there’s any way to change the ‘friction’ or ‘tightness’ setting for how freely it allows you to tilt the monitor. As far as I can tell unscrewing the side lever only disconnects the mounting arm from the screen thread.
Should be able to source it from Feelworld. I've put a link to their Amazon store in the description. If you don't find it there, you'll probably want to contact Feelworld support. Best wishes!
Thinking of getting this for my very first monitor but I’m also unsure. I just graduated film school & starting my career as a 1st AC. I’ve been working on a lot of short films lately. Would this be a good monitor to start my career off? 🧐
The image you are playing on it here, looks great. It seems the ones with an external recording are cheaper and better than they used to be - win , win I guess.

@@gereral1_jackofalltrades I still have it but it doesn't get a lot of use, to be honest. Not because it isn't good, just because I have an OSEE monitor which I use most of the time. Hey Curtis, does this display handle Full Data levels properly, or is it Legal level only like the Atomos ? I've been searching everywhere, but can't find any info on this.
Coming from the audio world, I have a stupid question that I could not find the answer on the net, I guess cause it is that obvious.. I would like one of those on-camera little monitors to connect to my computer for metering of audio only duties and I wonder if that would be possible since they have HDMI input. Would that be actually possible or do they have to be connected only with cameras? Thank you.
If you computer can send audio out via HDMI, yes, but you'd also have to route audio at the same time to your headphones or speakers. You'll want to test to make sure that's possible first.
Hi Curtis have you have any trouble with the false color (type 1) scale at the bottom of the screen? As soon as I swipe up on the menu and the back down it changes. I have to unplug the hdmi cable and plug it back it to get back to normal.
Hi Cody, just tested it again to confirm, but I haven't run into any issues with the scale on my copy here. Might be best to contact Feelworld support. I hope they can work that out for you. Best wishes!
It will not read a 4K 60 signal, but will read a UHD 30 or 25. It displays 1080 always, but it can only down convert as noted in the first section with the pros and cons listed.
Depends on the size of NP-F batteries you use as they come in lots of different capacities. It also depends on how bright you set the monitor. Under normal use with an NP-F970, I get a couple of hours.
if u playback 4k 60-120fps from a camera, does it show at all? or it says not supported? or just plays in lower frame rate? this monitors goes up to 4k 30fps as i know.
@@curtisjudd oh really? meaning when i shoot 4k 60fps, and or 4k 120fps with the sony a7siii or fx3, then monitor becomes useless? and also to clarify, nothing shows 1) when i record 4k 60-120 , or 2) ONLY when i playback 4k 60-120fps then? thanks
@@curtisjudd also someone gave me another answer which was: "60 fps is displayed with 30fps, 50 as 25. 120fps is usually saved as lower framerate in camera, depending on your settings (max 60fps on G9 ). So same applies here."
The monitor is calibrated out of the factory to rec.709. You could potentially use a professional color calibration system and colorimeter or photo spectrometer but that's very expensive and requires more skill than I have in that particular area.

Curtis Judd my firmware is 1.1.3. One other thing I noticed - if you enable the all waves display with no hdmi cable connected it looks like they are some spikes in the waveform. Weird - does yours do this too with no signal input?
Just got mine, the hdmi version. For the price you can't lose. Tired of looking at my camera screen 😒. And when you're working with clients they more than likely wanna see some sort of playback
This is great monitor although there is one issue that makes me wonder if my unit is defective: If I have a battery connected to the monitor a red led will ALWAYS be on. Even after powering the unit to the green led status, then powering off, the led will then show red and it will stay that way until I remove the battery. The problem with this is that I must always remove the battery for fear that it will be drained over time by the perpetual burning of the red led. Has anyone else experienced this, or is it just me?
I've seen a lot of complaints of this monitor seizing to function after a few uses, however I might just trust Curtis Judd as he appears to have credibility.
I still use it regularly with my Blackmagic Pocket 6K. To be fair, that has stayed in the studio for the last year so it hasn't been in the rough and tumble location world.
Sorry, I misread. It is my understanding that the canon DSLRs do funny stuff with their HDMI outputs. You’ll probably want to get in touch with Canon support to learn what is possible with your camera.
Understood. Glossy finish is an engineering/design trade-off situation. It is an inexpensive way to get more contrast and black shadows, but it can be reflective and distracting.
Hi Jay, it does not swivel but I didn't have any issues with it getting in the way of the HDMI ports or cables. Perhaps they changed it since I made this review?

Great video. It works for a mavic 2 pro and nikon p1000?
If they can output a clean HD or UHD signal via HDMI, yes.
Sorry, beginner here,do we output live what is on monitor or what is in camera? Can it be used as camera actually with making colors and look better during live streams? ❤
The camera feeds the video to this monitor. It doesn’t make the colors better, it just helps you set your exposure and white balance and focus etc.
I guess it will not power up with only 1 Sony NPF connected? Must be two correct? And any idea how many luts can be installed in total? Thanks always for the great reviews.
Hi T.J., it can be powered with a single NP-F battery which is good so you can switch batteries mid-shoot without losing picture. Not sure on the number of LUTS - might run that by FEELWORLD support. Best wishes!
Just be sure to switch back to program view or you can get mightily confused.
this looks super similar to the Andycine c7s. have you tried that one? is the same?
It’s the same
I haven't tried the Andycine, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is the same. They seem to copy a lot of other products like this.
Shame there is no top mounting thread as I hang my monitors, be good to get a cage also but I'm guessing this would block the light sensor ! Great review !
Thanks! You can hang it from the bottom and flip the image.
@@curtisjudd DOH ! Perfect thanks :)
Other the addition the dummy NPF battery mount, does the Pro version have anything else that this model doesn’t have?
Not sure, haven't tried the Pro version.
The menu and controls look eerily similar to my Andycine monitor. I'm guessing they are the same manufacturer just with different brand names.
Could be!
Thoughts?
Hi Josh, sorry for the delay, I just tested it here and it does NOT appear to pass through the LUT to the HDMI output so I don't think that will work.
@@curtisjudd thanks! I ended up going with atmos and it does it perfectly. Thanks for the help. Big fan of the videos.

Possibly too much time. 😀
Also, if Shinobi has the same build as Ninja V, it is better than this all plastic build.
@@curtisjudd that is a fantastic idea, ill probably just Amazon it to have that return option.
The plastic housing is definitely a negative for be. To be honest I'm not sure what it is in the shinobi, I'll have to look into that. Thanks!

That won't break the bank.

@@curtisjudd Appreciate it! I decided to purchase a Teradek.
Looked nice and priced well. I just have too many older monitors not being used.
Best to stick with what you have, especially if they're not getting a lot of use. 👍
Thanks!
Hi, Unfortunately, this monitor simply doesn't recognize 2160p60 signals. It isn't capable of doing that.
These display limitations are typical of field monitors, especially in this price range. If you need a monitor for 4K 60 or 120fps, you will need to shop well above the pro consumer grade gear.
Can we have the added lut result out through the SDI for streaming?
Unfortunately, I don't believe so.
@@curtisjudd thank you for the reply.
Is the mounting arm plastic too? The mount doesn't look very sturdy...
The arm is all metal. It does have some flex.
Do you know where I can find the 12v dc barrel cable? I want to hook it up to my fxlion v mount battery

Hey Curtis, my main question is... If i want to shoot 4k 60fps on my black magic, and send it through this monitor to my teradek to another monitor, will that work?

I would like one of those on-camera little monitors to connect to my computer for metering of audio only duties and I wonder if that would be possible since they have HDMI input.
Would that be actually possible or do they have to be connected only with cameras?

If you computer can send audio out via HDMI, yes, but you'd also have to route audio at the same time to your headphones or speakers. You'll want to test to make sure that's possible first.

Yes, I find it easier to compose and catch little details which need fixing, with stills or video.
Does the touch screen features work if it is connected only through HDMI?
No touch screen features here, unfortunately. This is a more budget oriented screen.
How's the heating?
There is no heating in this space. 🙃

This is great monitor although there is one issue that makes me wonder
if my unit is defective: If I have a battery connected to the monitor a
red led will ALWAYS be on. Even after powering the unit to the green led

that way until I remove the battery. The problem with this is that I
must always remove the battery for fear that it will be drained over
time by the perpetual burning of the red led. Has anyone else
experienced this, or is it just me?
