Definitely a song where it's a shame that the reaction is to a lyric video rather than to a performance. Lex is spot on about the Queen influence though!
@@dsfddsgh They seriously reacted to the lyrics to Bohemian Rhapsody and not the actual video. God, I hope they don't make the same mistake with I Want to Break Free.
The darkness are by a mile the best live act I’ve ever seen. They are out of this world. Justin Hawkins (lead singer/guitarist) got on the shoulders of a bouncer and played a guitar solo while being piggybacked through the crowd. Insane.
I forgot; they had to stop the show at some point because someone had a seizure in the mosh pit...so they stop playing while the bouncers get to the guy and help him. To entertain the crowd. Justin does about 3 minutes of stand up comedy followed by a solo rendition of jump by van halen on the synthesiser. I mean, c‘mon...
This song requires the actual music video. It's like reacting to the lyrics of Bohemian Rhapsody, I Want to Break Free or Bad Romance. The videos are amazing and necessary to understand context. You couldn't react to This is America by Childish Gambino without the actual video. I Believe in a Thing Called Love has one of the greatest music videos in history
@@melissas4874 No, but you should watch it. Similar to the video for Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ Top, the video is story driven and adds a chef's kiss to the song.
Lex you nailed your comparisons. I remember when this came out, their singer described themselves as being a gay AC/DC or a straight Queen. You picked it up completely!
There was a very short space in time where it felt like, at least in the UK, The Darkness were the biggest thing in the world, and a year later dropped off the face of the earth. This album was a fantasic ode to classic rock and it was like a breath of fresh air at the time. It's totally non-serious, yet somehow manages to not feel like a parody or a piss-take. I recommend checking out 'Friday Night' and 'Growing On Me'. Also check out Justin Hawkin's (lead singer) cover of 'This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us'. Better yet, check out the Sparks original.
That smile on Lex’s face is just how we looked when this album first came out! The Darkness are great fun and way too underrated when it comes to musicianship and songwriting.
This used to be my daughter's favourite band. I remember when she and a friend went to a concert of theirs and waited outside afterwards to see them come out. Justin Hawkins (the singer) spoke to them and was very nice. That made their day.
One of the things I most enjoy about The Darkness is that they come from East Anglia, a part of Britain that's like a cross between the American Deep South and Alaska, only tiny.
I saw them opening for guns n roses once. I bet its not their fault but both bands sounded absolutely terrible live. I feel as if though this one could be blamed on the sound technicians though. I hate it when you go to a show and instantly can tell this one will suck. Stadium gigs is the worst more often than not.
What a great uplifting easy going feel good song. Never fails to pick me up when I'm down. So cheesy but all the better for it. When it came out the charts were dominated by boy bands and naff pop that it was a breath of fresh air. Should check out Electric Six. Came out around the same time with the same kind of tongue in cheek rock vibe. My favourite was Gay Bar.
I remember when this came out, somewhere around 03 or so. It was so different, loved it! Reminded me of old school Queen too, the glory days stadium rock.
Great that you picked this song! While following strong Queen influences, you should take the next step and check out The Struts - "One Night Only" or "Body Talks". Much more recent, but the Queen influence is unabashedly out front and center.
The story of The Darkness is an interesting one, because surely no band in history got as big as quickly, then dropped off just as fast. Based on a handful of singles they were headlining Reading Festival. But their follow-up album was a little underwhelming and all their hype and status just vanished. They continued to put out good records ( I loved 'The Last of Our Kind') but they just never really got back to where they were.
I remember watching this band open Glastonbury Festival one year. It was about 10:30am on an overcast Friday morning. The lead singer had three costume changes in a 30 minute set Great fun.
Thank you for reacting to this band!! Love this band so much even though my hubby makes fun of the singer I still make him listen to them lol. I so hope you do more reactions to this truly Rock N' Roll band. Their videos rely show their sense of humor also. I hope you check out more! 🤘
It has sold 647,000 copies in the U.S. as of February 2012.[5] Sales in the UK were 381,373 copies as of November 2017 according to the Official Charts Company.[1]
cool band, very tongue-in-cheek. lead singer, also guitarist, Justin Hawkins does one of my favorite YT channels... Justin Hawkins Rides Again. always worth checking out.
Bang on with the Queen references. I saw the Darkness live in London ten years ago and for the encore, Brian May (Queen guitarist) came out with them and they did a few Queen covers!
you should definitely check out their song 'get your hands off my woman'. the radio edit is hysterical. also they are still a thing. their current drummer is the son of Queen drummer Roger Taylor. he's called Rufus Taylor. otherwise the vocals and guitar are the same, just more mature.
Definitely remember hearing this on the radio, then seeing the video on MTV, then talking about it with my friends at school the next day! Circa 2003 or 2004?
This song was a vibe back in the day. Love watching Lex react to this. You guys should do Jet- Are you going to be my girl and The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army 🤘
Always a great reaction, thank you!. Would love to see an OZZY- diary of a madman or Mr. Crowley reaction, also Van Halen pound cake or anything sammy hagar era.
Wow. I chimed in on your live feed last night saying you should react to The Darkness "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" and today, I see you did!. I wonder if someone else suggested it, or if someone saw that I suggested it and it got circulated. I had to check out of the live feed after about ten minutes (caught Safety Dance) so glad it was given a whirl.
Ya'll have become EASILY my favorite reactors on YT (sorry Lost In Vegas!) ... I wish I had the chance to smoke a blunt and just chill with ya'll for a night
To each their own ofc but to me, nah, it's a banger and it always will be 😆, especially the solos. That whole first album was a brilliant, Queen-esque cheesefest where the songs were simultaneously really well written.
I'd say the darkness are a mixture of queen and spinal tap :) they are a band that borders on genius and what the hell is this !! :) they can be hard to take seriously when the lead singer wears 1970's jump suits 😂
This band was a refreshing recall back to the awesomeness that was 80s hair metal. My favourite song by these guys is 'Is it Just Me' got to check it out 👍
These guys were the best live band of the naughties check out their live performances on jools holland or live on the rocks with no ice for MTV2 (remember that channel!) good ol days.
lol just about to watch and very much looking forward to Lex and Brad's reaction to this classic. But will they spot the 'tongue in cheek' rock parody?
The Darkness is a great band. So, many great songs. This was one of their early songs and the singer/lead guitarist said he hated that a lot of love songs didn't just come out and say the obvious so he wrote this poppy tune as a reply to all of those beat around the bush love songs. My favorite song from them is "Open Fire". Also, you guys mentioned Queen. Well, the drummer from Queen son is the current drummer in The Darkness. And, I think he's been their drummer for about ten years.
Like I saw in a previous comment, you really need to see the video when you're listening to this song. I can't remember what it was for, but this song was used in a commercial.
Kinda off topic but have you guys watched Bohemian Rhapsody? The film? It's about Queen and Freddie, not asking for a reaction on your channel but you guys should definitely give it a watch if you havent! Keep doing what you're doing

Like what Freddie Mercury did with a Superman and Darth Vader cosplayer during a show.

Roger Taylor's son now drums for the darkness! True fact.
