- Old SpongeBob SquarePants episode scenes have been remade to fit the modern style of animation. Thanks to artist YinyangGio, we have new takes on Pizza Delivery, Sandy's Rocket and more SpongeBob episodes from Season 1! Which version of SpongeBob looks better?
Because SpongeBob SquarePants episodes have been airing on Nickelodeon since 1999, the characters and Bikini Bottom have gone through several different changes, especially in how it all looks. These remake images give us a new perspective on what episodes would look like in an alternate era.

Old spongebob but modern spongebob improves alot more on animation like being more fluid and detailed so if would say which has better animation modern spongebob but I would prefer old spongebob

I do personally prefer older Patrick's more relaxed and chill expressions/look over his more cute modern ones because it just made him feel well older.
He looks cute yes. But most of the time he has some adult stuff that still retains the old aspect of his character. Just like spongebob too they might look younger and cuter but the writers know what makes them relatable to everyone and they returned that in season 9b.

You can kinda say the same about Peter Griffin lol, older looks are really the best looks for old characters
Idk if it’s just nostalgia but I absolutely love the season 1 artwork.
Season 1 is nostalgic because they start in 1999
I like season 1's art not because of nostalgia but because the colors were not so bright and the cartoony expressions weren't always so exaggerated.
It was mainly because It used Cell Animation and almost everything was drawn frame by frame, so It looked more natural, also the Darker colors and less exaggerated expressions help everything build up
I prefer the old animation just the way it is.
No need to improve what’s already perfect.

It was my first attempt to re-create the new style, and the last one was so spontaneous, because I had gotten more used to how the drawing should flow, it was more of a practice if you ask me. In any case, I appreciate the feedback :)

Imagine for the 25th anniversary they did a Sonic Generations thing and brought Modern Spongebob back to season 1 and vice verse for a special episode. I'd love to see scenes from both classic and modern Spongebob play in the reverse styles. That be very interesting to watch.

Not just Oggy and the Cockroaches, but other shows like Doraemon, Pororo the Little Penguin, Garfield, and even Arthur with one episode are doing the same as well. Any other cartoons you guys can think of?

Never before have I been hit with nostalgia so hard
I prefer old days Spongebob for jokes and animate movement
But i prefer modern Spongebob for the character design and animation quality
These look awesome, they actually like look their from modern day SpongeBob episodes. I appreciate both of these art styles. And It's really cool to how episodes will look in a different art style.

Yeah, although I didn't mind the very bouncier animation. And don't forget that they finally brought back the screwball cartoony style and killed off the Steven Universe-esque style (it's still around but less frequently now). And thanks to the newer animation style, it became a impact for the return of classic cartoon humor, like its spinoff, The Patrick Star Show, Looney Tunes Cartoons, Middlemost Post, Taffy, Tom and Jerry Special Shorts (sadly got cancelled) and the reboot for Animaniacs.

That's the thing I love about the Modern SpongeBob we have now, the colors are more brighter and saturated, and the characters are much more expressive then the older seasons.
Edit: I also agree with what you said at the end. I, for one, love SpongeBob no matter the era.
Yeah, my problem with the 1st season was mostly the art style. While not bad, it just didn’t feel lively and expressive as these later seasons. Plus, these newer seasons are bringing back characters we hadn’t seen for years like Bubble Bass

Seasons 1-8 are the best art styles in my opinion
I prefer the older look in large part due to the imperfections of hand drawn animation. Not only does modern SpongeBob look overly bright and exaggerated, the characters look “too” good in a way. The imperfections of hand drawn animation give it character that computers will never be able to replicate
I'm not really sure, I kinda prefer the Old Artstyle because it's all Relax and Mellowed Out. While the New Artstyle is over exaggerated and disgusting.
The more I see these side-by-side comparisons, the more I want to see a SpongeBob episode/fanfic that swaps between the classic and modern art styles.
It's kind of like Sonic Generations if you think about it.

I think that, the old style is the perfect and nostalgic style, since it was the introduction to the series and characters original designs, with that homemade look to it, the ones that we first saw, the new style could be something good if it followed the og style, but with improvments, like better expressions for the characters and more fluid movements. But we all know it wasnt like that. Maybe, just maybe if Stephen didnt quit at the time, this could happend. Note: i also think that the series would have ended long ago, with a good ending, and the episodes would be better than what they are today

I wish modern Spongebob kept the old color scheme. The modern colors hurt my eyes a little bit almost like Teen Titans Go.
if modern spongebob die down the colors a little bit and made the characters do a little less over the top expressions but still allowed them to do more than the original i think it could be good. i still prefer the original though bc it doesnt destroy my eyes

Idk if this will became a reality, but a remastered version of the 1st season with the modern Spongebob style (maybe for an anniversary gift for some of the fans or something like that) will be good.
Either way i respect the effort of the animators during the 1st season, and they did a fantastic work. After all, both Spongebob style's are cool
They should make an episode called “Nostalgia Traveling” where spongebob, patrick, sandy, squidward and mr krabs use a time machine to travel back to different season 1 episodes, with the new animation style and new voice clips for those parts
Unfortunately that might not happen, due to cel animation's death for cartoons after 2004 (when Ed, Edd n Eddy, the final comedy cartoon to remain using this technique, transitioned to digital ink and paint). Yes, it didn't officially die out until 2013, but that was in some other places.
@@kootunesscrewy but it’s probably easier to draw how they used to look now. Literally they just take stuff from the first few seasons like color and character. Like Spongebob had a more relaxing vibe to it. Yes it was a cartoon about him being overly eager and always excited however it didn’t necessarily feel like a kids show if that makes sense. Than they just reanimate it. Yes animation takes a long time clearly but something like that isn’t as hard. Hell if you’ve watched girl meets world, they literally had the characters go to an old episode of boy meets world and think about the type of technology they had before and now? So them going to older episodes isn’t impossible! Probably difficult and time consuming but not impossible.
There was a episode where spongebob and Patrick have gone back in time, that episode was a mess.

You can’t lie. The best episodes are the old episodes.
Spongebob was a rather clever show for the first 4 seasons or so. Lots of little adult jokes, tongue firmly placed in cheek. Then they started being more on-the-nose and more graphic with their jokes. I finally watched a "newer" Spongebob episode a few years ago, and it blew me away how far the quality dropped.

Gotta say, these ''modern-style'' screencap remakes look pretty good. Heck, I'd even dare say that due to how they are more expressive than their original counterparts, I actually kind of prefer the remade shots! Though that doesn't mean I no longer find the season 1 SpongeBob ''style'' charming.
I like the old style more. I don't think one is "better" or "worse" than the other, just different and dependent on preference and on which style people grew up with.

Welp, I'm turning back the new style again. The first season's and C.H. Greenblatt's style were great, but the modern style is actually better.

Yin yang gave quite literally gave us yin and yang, the lights of seeing the gross newer episodes being drawn in the good classic style to seeing the dark of the good classics drawn as the gross newer episodes
I remember when I was a kid, and my sister used to dislike the older episodes because she thought the art style was "weird". And I always wondered why they never bothered to remake those older episodes in the newer, cleaner style, until I realised it would be a huge waste of time. (And money, for that matter, but I didn't know that at the time.)

Nick needs to do some sort of anniversary special where they reanimate a classic episode in the new style and vice versa. If it's well received maybe do more!

no matter what i will ALWAYS and forever prefer the old original style, it's not just nostalgia but it also just has more soul and is a lot more wholesome, just feels like there was more love behind it, especially because it's drawn by hand
