You are right, I'm an old fighter from Queensland Australia. I fought as an amateur in the late sixties & fought as professional in the early seventies. Had my last pro fight in 1982. So I can see exactly what you are talking about. I've seen the boxing game degenerate to this pitiful display of the manly art of self defence that. We have now. I always talk about all the points you highlight, including glove size. I fought with those little tightly packed gloves. Man when you were hit with those things you were hit. Here in Australia they were packed with horse hair & they were hard. Especially those JFM Gloves down in Melbourne. And you were 100% right in saying those old blokes never worked anywhere else. Boxing was their job. They trained all day everyday. My brother-in-law's father was an old time boxer he used to talk about fighting 15 round preliminary fights. He said from the early 20th centry right up into the 20's & 30's here in Australia if you really wanted to learn to fight you joined a boxing camp & these camps were all over Australia. Way out in the country, the bush we call it here. There you trained all day. Got up in the morning, 10 miles roadwork, have breakfast, take an axe & chop timber till lunch, nap afterwards. Then get up work the bags, spar, skip, drill. Wash up, have dinne, tea it was called back then. Go to bed early, get up again & do it all again. So these places were situated why out in the bush away from the temptations of town & city. They were always a good day's horse ride to town. So it's good to hear you because I've been saying the self same thing for years, & nobody wants to listen. Great to find someone who thinks the same as me.

Barbados Joe Walcott is the type of fighter that everyone should inspire to be who gets into the sweet science. You hear fanboys today make excuses for their favorite fighters not fighting a guy because he is "too big" fighting ten pounds heavier, and here was a guy fighting people over a foot taller and sometimes sixty or more pounds heavier. Five foot one? Damn, that's Danny DeVito's height, LOL. That's crazy.

The Real Joe Walcott was a phenom. A 5'1" welterweight knocking out heavyweights. Barbados Joe CREATED the jab. Jack Dempsey ranked Barbados Joe in his All Time Top Ten P4P. And, Joe was born in Guyana, but raised in Barbados.

What I can say about the fighters from the late 1800's and early 1900's is that they didn't care about weight divisions, the gloves they fought in were smaller than the gloves we have now in the modern day ear because that's when western boxing first evolved bare knuckle fighting which was mainly popular in Great Britain and Ireland. Western boxing was owned by the Mafia, so fighters were sometimes required to drop fights in order to get a shot at the title, the boxers from that time period fought any and everybody, were less entitled to talk 💩, and the rounds were longer. The problem with boxing in that era is that there still was corruption, fights were sometimes rigged, racism prevented some fighters from getting a shot at world championships. Barbados Joe Walcott was undoubtedly the greatest fighters of all time, and one of the most criminally underrated fighters because he was 5'1, held the welterweight champion for 4 years, and after he lost the championship due to a controversial disqualification, and when no one else wanted to fight him in the welterweight division, he went on to fight people way bigger than him who were in the heavyweight division. One guy that I know that did something similar to that in the modern era was James "lights out" Toney who went from a cruiserweight, to a lightweight, to a middleweight, to a light heavyweight, and a heavyweight.

Thanks for breathing life into this legendary champion. Im not sure if you came across this in your research but I found an article on the life of Jack Johnson with many interviews of him. He was asked if Jeffries was the hardest puncher he ever fought. this was his response. "Jeffries No. 1? No, sir. Give me Joe Choynski anytime. I faced both and should know. Jefferies had a powerful wallop, but Choynski had a paralyzing punch. His left hand was a corker. He was the hardest puncher in the last 50 years, with Joe Walcott a close second. I think his left hook was even more effective than either Dempseys" -Jack Johnson. I had always heard of Choyinsvki's incredible power so this didn't surprise me but the part at the end made me think to myself "Wait, Joe Walcott?? He's a welterweight and they never fought. How would he know how hard he punched? I researched Johnson's life and found this. "After returning home for a short period of time, Johnson once again left at the age of 16, this time heading for Manhattan. While in Manhattan, Jack found living arrangements with Joe Walcott, a welterweight fighter from the West Indies.[10] Once again Johnson found work exercising horses for the local stable, until he was fired for exhausting a horse. Soon finding employment as a janitor for a gym owned by German born heavyweight fighter, Herman Berneau, Johnson eventually put away enough for two pairs of boxing gloves, sparring every chance he got.[11] Throughout his time in Manhattan, living with Walcott and working for Berneau, Johnson began to develop his unique style of fighting which would make him famous."
Walcott had befriended , lived with and sparred with Johnson for years while Johnson was in his late teens. He describes Walcott as the second hardest puncher he had ever been in he ring with and one of the greatest fighters ever. This coming from the man who some consider the greatest heavyweight champion of all time , speaking about a welterweight who was 5'1". I can't find the article for a direct quote on this but I assure you it exists. Nat Fliescher the creator and editor of Ring magazine ranks Walcott as the #1 welterweight in history. Thanks for the video. I have a request if you do another video like this. I am obsessed with two other fighters from this era. Stanley Ketchel and of course Joe Choynski. I love punchers and why not do a video on the man who is considered the hardest puncher of that era and pound for pound arguably the hardest puncher ever. Or Ketchel who accomplished more in 4 years than most fighters do in 15 and is also considered the hardest puncher in middleweight history. Or Young Griffo. I look forward to your next video.

and todays fans talk about a jr middle being to big for a welter......i wonder how those welters would do in a fight against a heavy the day after they fought two fighters in a row....Walcott's era is the key that sums up all the bullshit that is coming out of this era...i just cant compare the guys from today because the times are so different

Very tough Black fighter.....indeed. I learned something today still checking him out......very tough strong little man. He was basically a welter at a certain point in his career and could not return to lightweight anymore. He is the one who coined the phrase "The Bigger they are the harder they fall." He had a serious punch and he was built like a tank. He was more about force and power and that brother could take a punch but Langford who was small himself was able to outbox him. Interesting research my man. Langford himself was quite a beast. Back then was a little more wild......the referee scored the fight how he felt the fans could just storm the ring and cause ruckus and the police could just mess with the fighters......real primitive times.....it was crazy how a black fighter could lose a fight because he was winning....lol! Some crazy times! They went 20 rounds and stuff like that...if he didn't shoot himself in his hand as it is alleged he would have been a terror. Nowadays the sport is much much different....but clearly the science of the sport has improved......if Langford could out box him it means the know how of some of the fighters was not to the point where they knew how to work around controlling him and his power but he reminds me of a Pacquiao. In fact he reminds of an Armstrong too.........they all seem to have used blood doping to maintain that high rate of endurance, speed voracity and strength.......I take that back......

Ok let's get things into perspective here.
    Walcott''s record is 95-25-24.
33 of his opponents had never fought before - they were making their debut when Walcott fought them.
18 of his opponents had fought less than 5 times or less when Walcott fought them.
It wasn't until his 37th fight that he faced an opponent who had a winning record (i.e., who had won more fights than he had lost or drawn)
So what about the guys that he fought that we know were good fighters.?
He lost both his fights to lightweight Kid Lavigne.
He drew with lightweight champ Joe Gans (the ref scored it 7 rds to Gans 5rds to Walcott)
He had a mixed record against Young Peter Jackson (wins, losses and draws)
He drew against a young inexperienced Sam Langford (Most at ringside gave it to Langford)
He had a loss and a draw against Philadelphia Jack O'Brian (who was well under 160 lbs at this point in his career)
Unfortunately we don't have any film of Walcott''s fights. But if we go off his record it's maybe just about possible to have him in the top 10 welterweights of all time. But there's no case for having him in the top 5.

Good video Blood on the original Joe Walcott. When I started reading boxing book at 13 and a half, I thought there was one Joe Walcott with Jersey Joe until there was another Joe Walcott whom Arnold Cream named after as Jersey Joe Walcott. What I read from the book that Barbados Joe Walcott was killed in a automobile accident in 1935. Walcott was smaller compare to Pacquiao, but you're right he destroy bigger men in his time and that's how great champion suppose to do in his prime. Can you make a video about the YTBC failed to mention other great welterweight champions like Ted "Kid" Lewis, Jack Britton, Kid Gavilan (they mentioned earlier, but failed to rank him) and Wilfred Benitez? Those guys I mentioned were also tough back then.

I have been saying this for years! This man beat guys a foot taller and much bigger than himself! He is easily top five. nat Fleischer, the founder of Ring magazine stated that Walcott was the greatest welterweight he ever saw, bar none, and I tend to agree with him on this. None of these welterweights of recent times - Floyd Mayweather,Manny Pacquiao, SRL, Robinson, etc. would ever come close to taking on the competition Walcott took on. If you're 5 foot 1, 140 pounds and HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD DON'T WANT TO FIGHT YOU, YOU'RE PHENOMENAL. Thanks Blood!

Blood great video, Also they had no drug testing, back in those days fighters were taking shit and putting shit in their gloves, yet they still fought them, they were Gunslingers, the boxers of those days were fighting in an era where they still had the wild wild west or the wild west was barely becoming civilized so these fighters had the Gunslinger mentality they sought out the best, they had the Machismo that men are supposed to have, they would go to town to town and say hey I got a guy here who can beat your best guy, and they would make the fight, no 8 week camp, no video tape, nothing, they had no internet, all they heard was tales about how this fighter was a bad boy, so these were REAL fighters, they went in with no fear and no knowledge they went in with guys who they had no clue stylistically about, and had to adapt on the fly.

    • @BloodBoxing
      @BloodBoxing  9 лет назад +2

those are more reasons why I just can't compare the fighters today to the fighters of that era.....we REALLY got the best too because there was other distractions....not many other sports either...todays baddest fighters are probably on the football field, basketball court, incarcerated or maybe something else took their interest.....maybe todays best fighter never been tested like the men from that era...the point i am trying to make is that in that era it was easier to find who the best fighters were..if we lived by the same standards today i am not sure if even one of these champs of today would even be significant

I've watched this several times. I'm fascinated by him and there's not a lot out there about him. It would make for a great documentary. I'm with you on today's game being piss poor. Man , Tommy Warren shot and killed a black porter, he only did seven years. He was out by 1898,;shocking! Speaking of throwbacks...

I like your attitude, very sincere and fully caffeinated.LOL Yea man I gotta agree, everyone of these old school dudes were straight up dogs. And in many cases if you put on a poor showing you might not even get paid or get blacklisted as not being game enough as the phrase of the time goes. Those guys in their time really had to know their craft.Research Jack Dempsey, although I really am a big fan of the 'Manassa Mauler' I heard he avoided black fighters. Not so much by choice but because of the politics involved.IDK.I heard and have read that Jack Johnson claimed he could have had his way with Dempsey even in Dempsey's prime so ..

extremely good vid!!! i enjoyed it.
kinda strange that 140 pounders getting wins vs heavyweights,
boxing probably evolved as that isnt possible anymore. In mma Royce gracie 170 pounds also owned all weightclasses at some time, but as MMA evolved those type of things are impossible now. the fighters and their techniques have evolved in MMA so much that the heavyweights know how to deal with certain techniques about as good as the lighter weights.
this boxer did have balls fighting heavier boxers, but i think evolution is the main reason.140 pounders arent beating heavyweights anymore.
im a layman regarding boxing history, just my assumption on the matter. All in all good stuff :-)

True, I saw Prince Naseems featherweight sparring partner knockout 2 guys who weighed at least 220lbs each in a street fight, an unskilled will always lose to a skilled fighter, regardless of size.

don't misconstrue the sweet science. everything gets updated. We should be glad we live in the now. they didn't make any money and or got robbed for their purses. now we do have tv internet and local news. thank GOD. Now is now then was then. time to get modernized. Jersey Joe is 1 of my favorites and I know he took the name of Barbados Joe so obviously Barbados was good. However we move on with the time and that's what it is.

i appreciate your intensity man lol! there's only one joe walcott in my book. in like the last 10 years he got known as barbados joe walcott because of wikipedia. but make no mistake. there's one real joe walcott. arnold cream's ring name was jersey joe, and he's a legend. but the real joe walcott was a different deal! look at the interview of walcott when he's old and retired. he said he would have ko'ed gentleman jim but he wouldn't fight him. i believe him!
