  • The college football game between Nebraska and Georgia Southern very well may have been Scott Frost's last as the head coach of the Cornhuskers. Nebraska was defeated 45-42 after missing a potential game tying field goal. This game is just one of many humiliating losses Frost has suffered as the head coach of Nebraska.

As a non-Husker fan who has lived in Nebraska off and on since their pinnacle in the mid-1990s, it's both amusing and sad at the same time to see how far they have fallen. I used to catch all sorts of garbage going to high school in Lincoln because I wasn't a Husker fan (I lived in Manhattan KS before I lived in Nebraska, and have bled Wildcat purple ever since). Those memories, the smug air of entitlement that some fans had from the otherwise unheard of generation-long run of unbroken powerhouse teams, without a single "bad" year of fewer then 9 wins from 1969 to 2001, and the Huskers' traitorous desertion of the Big 12 for the B1G contribute a certain amount of schadenfreude to the current situation, but at the same time, there is something depressing about how upside down it seems remembering how unstoppable the "Big Red Machine" was a generation ago, and how pitiful they are now. I also met Scott Frost at a youth event in 97, when he was Nebraska's starting QB and I was a high schooler. I was favorably impressed with him at the time, and was really hoping he would have at least moderate success as the head coach, only for him to outdo Callahan and Riley at losing.

As a longtime resident of Nebraska (moved to Lincoln in the summer of 94) who is a K-State fan (lived in Manhattan KS from 88-90) and usually cheered for the Big Red when they weren't playing my Wildcats, here is my perspective on how it came to this. There were actually two noticeable drops in quality for the program. The first happened under Solich, when the 2002 team went 7-7, which was the first non-9-win season since 1969 and the first non-winning season since 1961. Some of that was due to the fact that while Solich was continuing many of Osborne's traditions and retaining a lot of his staff, he wasn't quite at Osborne's level (to be fair, who is?) But when the AD fired Solich for the 9-3 record in 03, it basically killed the Osborne system, along with the NCAA changing the walk-on rules that had previously allowed Nebraska, as the only meaningful football program in the state to fill its reserves with its pick of a whole state's worth of fiercely loyal walk-ons, saving the scholarships for marquee athletes from all over the country. One of the things I noticed on the Osborne-era teams that made them so powerful was their insane depth. The 95 team, the best in college football history by a wide margin, had 5 running backs that could have started for their pick of top-10 college football teams that year. The O-line had to replace 4 starters from the famous "Pipeline" that was one of the best O-lines ever, and was actually BETTER in 95! The rule change and the importing of Callahan with his pro-style offense burned that system to the ground. Osborne's stepping in as AD and hiring Pelini and some of Osborne's old assistants partially reversed that decline. The Huskers weren't the unstoppable powerhouse they had been in the Devaney/Osborne era, but they were still a solid, consistent team that always lost exactly 4 games per season and won 9 or 10, depending how many games they played. The second decline, which killed that era, and brought things to where they are now, stem largely from moving to the Big 10. It was a good move from a purely monetary standpoint, but came at the cost of cutting off Nebraska's recruiting pipeline in Texas, which is part of the reason the Huskers didn't collapse right away, as they still had the stability of keeping the same coaching staff and had those last few good recruiting classes to carry them for the first few years after the move. The fact that Pelini was fired right around the time that the last Big 12 era recruiting class graduated was a double blow that sent the program into its current downward spiral. The Cornhuskers are in the position of a former world heavyweight boxer, long past his prime, who had discovered he can earn a lot of money by letting himself get pulverized by any two-bit punk who wants to say he beat a former champion and is willing to pay good money for that privilege. Even as a non-fan, it truly saddens me, and I hope Nebraska finds a way to become a contender again.

I'm an alumni of the University of Tennessee. I was in school the years that Peyton Manning was there. I remember how we had a shot at the national title if we could beat Nebraska in the bowl game. Before the game, Nebraska announced that Tom Osborne was retiring after the game. I knew we were screwed after that. Even with Peyton at quarterback. Scott Frost was the starting quarterback for Nebraska. My Vols hung with the Huskers for about a quarter and a half. And then Nebraska just pushed the pedal to metal. I lost count of how many times Scott ran to his right out of the pocket and flipped the ball to the tailback who then ran it down our throats. My Vols lost 42-17. With Peyton Manning at quarterback. Let that sink in for a minute. When I saw the Georgia Southern final few minutes? I couldn't imagine what a Husker fan felt after being on the mountain top like they were with Osborne. I really hope the program at Nebraska gets back to being Nebraska. Even if they did run the ball down our throats. 😎

Say what you will about Pelini but look at all the talent he sent to the NFL, especially on defense. But because we weren't winning championships everyone around here wanted their heads. Now we hire and fire a new coach every 4 years and scratch our head in bewilderment when we lose and play inconsistently. No coach has any time to build a program, and if I were a coach I wouldn't touch this program with a 7 foot cornstalk. As a person who lives there, I can tell you this was the day Frost officially lost the fan base. He’s one of our own and we’re very loving and loyal about our own. This was the day we finally unanimously know that it’s time to move on. Everyone knows it, you can tell even the opposing coach knew.
His buyout thing is Oct 1. He’ll most likely be fired by Oct 2. Is sad because we really believed and he’s one of our own, but when you’re the most catastrophic hire in a school’s history through 4 years… you’re obviously going to be out.
