    Most of the bc rail rs18s came with a low short hood from the factory, and in the 90s they began rebuilding them in their own shop with caterpillar 3516 engines and getting the new designation of CRS-20 as they now made 2000 hp. CN had nothing to do with the rebuilding of these units. These engines lasted until 2008 when cn began to retire and sell them. 629 is the only existing unit and works as an industrial switcher in the states.

    CN had another RS-18 rebuild in the mid or late 70's - a handful of RS-18's had their short hood extended to make room for steam generator and were assigned to passenger trains branded as "Tempo".

    • @amtraklover
      @amtraklover 2 года назад +2

      The ones that pulled the Tempo had HEP generators not steam

      The tempo units, with 92mph gearing, were equipped for long or short hood running, and were created in 1968.

    I liked the appearance of the old BC Rail/PGE RS 18s, especially with their large headlights and horn/bell setup.
    I converted an N scale RS 11 into a BC Rail RS18 a few years back. Definitely one of my favorite locos.

      I volunteer at the York-Durham Heritage Railway based in Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada. We have two RS3s and a RS-11. The RS-11 we have was from an American subsidary of Canadian National and has a 251 Prime mover made by Dominion Engineering and all the electrical components are made by General Electric Canada. It is essentially a RS-18 with RS-11 hoods.

    Cartier Railways has owned 7 RS18 low nose . Between 1960 and 2005 .
    They where cheap to operate, easy to maintain and reliable. From 1960 to 1971 , they hauled 100 cars ore trains between Lac Jeanine and Port Cartier on the north shore of St Laurence River . After that , they where assigned to passenger , switchers and freight trains only They rolled few millions miles before retirement in early 2000 .

    I operated CP rebuilt RS-18s in yard service on the D&H, and the major problem with them was that they were a bit lightweight compared to our own RS-11s and -36s, and would spin the drivers if I took them above the 4th throttle notch too quickly. I've talked with others who say the same thing, but they were fine in road service once they got up to speed.

    Great video ! These diesels have to be the best of the best since ALCO's 4 axle RS1 (1940s) to the 6 axle RSD 15 (1960) I think an RSD16 was still grinding steel as late as 2014. Amazing machines.

    Those loco's used to run by my house, got to ride in them a few times, they were refitted with 3 axle trucks and down rated to 1400 hp I think it was, I got quiet a bit of footage on old vhs tapes.

    The Adirondack Scenic Railroad purchased two RS-18U's and now only runs from Utica, NY to Big Moose, NY, since the State of NY has removed the rails between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, NY for a recreational Trail.

    • @treesixtyeight
      @treesixtyeight 2 года назад +1

      The Adirondack will run between Utica and Tupper Lake beginning late summer 2022. The rails between Tupper Lake and Lake Placid wew indeed lifted at the behest of "trail advocates," some of whom are still pressing to have the rails lifted north of Remsen.

    .....brand new with improved electrical, mechanical and other modifications, with AC trucks that began use in the late 60s with the c430. yeah, its pretty much a brand new Alco.... if they had time to refine this unit back when it was built.
    it would be like the "never say die" EMD sd 40-2's!!

    Cn only had 2 FPA2s they had the 2 upgraded to FPA4 specs at some point i dont know when. All CN FPA4s where built new for CN and all left on CN when VIA rail was formed where moved to via rail ownership and CN as a crown (gov) owned company just created a crown subsiduary to run all passenger trains starting in early 70s. In 76 via rail became a company and in 78 thr gov got fully involved and CPRAIL then added their passenger services to via rail and via took over canadas passenger services in 1978

    The PGE/BCR didn't operate 'almost exclusively in the west. it operated only in British Columbia. No mention was made of the versions with HEP for service in Ontario on CN, nor of the different 'standard' AAR Type B trucks versus the 'lightweight' trucks. Too many gaps.

    Only some of CN's RS18s were reconfigured into RSC-14s, the rest stayed original right up to their retirement. Also Terra Transport? that was CN's Newfoundland division on it's last leg, not sure what they had to do with BCR's RS18 rebuilds especially since CN had no ties with BCR when the CRS-20s were made. most of the info in the is false

    More errors as usual. Don’t you research or edit your vids? Roberval and Saguenay is in Eastern Canada, not Western. You have one section where you just repeat yourself.
