The Targa 4 remains the ultimate Porsche for me. On a more technical note concerning your vlogs Guido (in general), I really like the way you choose to make your shots and the way you edit them. As a communications professional, I can make that comment. Since your style is so consistent throughout, I think you're benchmarking the way people should do automotive reviews on RUclips. So thumbs up there! Porsche should give you more models per annum to review. And I hurrah your obivious love for Porsche. In the world of true sportscars, there can be only one... Cheers, Guido. Well done and keep those vids coming.
Wow, really excellent review Guido! The filming and editing was fantastic and you make some great points. I think if I were to get a 911 and could afford the Targa, it would definitely be my first choice, although the GT3 would be very tempting too. But like you said towards the end of your review, going for a drive while being exposed to the elements like you are in the Targa is a wonderful feeling that can't be matched by a hardtop. Keep up the great reviews Guido, they just continue to get better and better!
subaruwrxfan : Thank you so much, Matt ! The storm inside the cabin is pretty heavy...I'm so hoping you get the chance to review a 991. Your reactions would be priceless, I know it :)
Hi Guido! I see you got your hands on the Targa finally. Bless you good sir! An outstanding review and well worth the wait. Keep doing what you do. We so enjoy your work.
Agreed 100%. I think for most of us it IS about the "experience" more than all the performance numbers other journalists and magazines us to sell us on cars (e.g. 0-60 mph times). Who cares if one 911 can lap the Nurburgring faster by 2/10 of a second? Means nothing in everyday driving. 98% of Porsche owners will never drive on a track nor have any desire to. So for this reason I think the Targa's are one of the best choices. Very sexy chrome "Targa bar". And I too doubt any one will notice the added 300 odd pounds. It's still going to drive like a "Porsche 911" (except for maybe the GT3's...though, on the street you wouldn't notice the benefit of rear wheel steering). If I were buying a Targa I'd order a "2016 Targa 4s".
Really enjoyed this review! Theres only one Targa 4s currently at the dealerships where I live. I've seen plenty of the cabriolets this summer, but it was great to see a hands on, high quality review of the new Targa from someone who appreciates classic styling and spirited driving.
Mike Sessa : Thanks for the great feedback ! It still means alot to me to know that people and enjoy the content I film :) Greetings, Guido aka TheGetawayer
Great review. Really love that your camera shows how it looks with the top down. I'd love to see more "rear view visibility" camera shots in reviews though... Showing what the rear view mirror, and also over the shoulder rear visibility, is like in each car. I didn't realise until I bought a Boxster how limited its over the shoulder to the sides and back, and rear view mirror, visibility was with the top down until I bought one and drove it for a while. Was terrible with the top up in heavy city traffic.
Michael Neri : Thanks Michael ! Don't be jealous, at least I was able to share the experience with you guys on video and actually renting a 911 here in germany, is very easy. Plan a trip and live the dream for a day, just like me ;)
Thx mon friar. Your videos are a big treat for me to watch. Love them! Sounds like an excellent idea. Was in Munich a couple of years ago but could only get to BMW Museum/Welt (awesome) I guess I will come somewhat clean. I do own a 2006 C4S so I'm not immune to the 911 experience. Love my C4S but of course yearn for the day I can upgrade to a 991. Keep up the good work. Love all the videos. The TTRS is my personal favorite. Seems like the best car for the money hands down.
Michael Neri : Top tip is Avis. They have a partnership with Porsche and you can rent pretty much all regular models there for 250 € a day ( no I'm not paid for that tip, but I should be considering how many people I told about this, haha ). Really drive the 991 before you upgrade to it. The car feels very different to a 997. I loved the TTRS and can't wait to see a new version of it. Amazing car for sure and one of the best videos I filmed imo :)
Awesome review man! Can't imagine what it's like to drive, but you get me pretty close. I know my STi is still number one for you though haha! Take care - Hans
Great review. About six months ago I watched your video on the GT3 and as you said they are impossible to get new. It is about a two year wait here in the US and most dealerships get one car if they get any so there is a waiting list. I watched countless reviews on most every sports car available and I always came back to the Porsche. To make a long story short, I just ordered a 2017 Targa 4S which was almost as difficult to get as the GT3. My dealer had to make a trade with another because there was only one available in the southeast US. Based on your review, I ordered it with all of the performance options (except ceramic bakes) including PDCC which should alleviate any issue of it being top heavy ( I know you said you couldn't feel the weight difference but I figured it couldn't hurt). Also, it appears that the roof may be lighter now since they have incorporated magnesium; it can now be opened and closed at speeds up to 30 mph. I chose GT silver with red and black interior and spider wheels. I should have it in about three months. If you have any suggestions regarding options and equipment, let me know; I can still make changes. Thanks again for all of your great reviews.
+Charles Barbera Wow you configured a lovely Targa, Charles ! Very glad my videos helped ! Make sure to send me a picture of your car, when it arrives. Facebook link is under all videos here, email on my website, whichever you like :) Greetings from germany, Guido
It's great to see how people from different nations react to one car. I have seen quite a bit of hatred on some of your videos, just don't mind them and keep the videos coming. :)
SarpGz : Thanks! I don't see too much hatred to be honest. Some people wish they could drive these cars and leave a bad comment for no real reason. I can live with that :)
Great review of one of my very favourite cars but I've heard a few differing opinions regarding the wind buffering. Either way, I would have one of these cars tomorrow if I could. It is just so beautiful in my opinion, I would put up with any wind buffering.
phlipnet Glad you enjoy the video ! If you get the chance drive one and see how you feel about the buffering. I thought it was abit unpleasent at higher speeds, but the way the cars looks is just amazing, like you said. Greetings, Guido aka TheGetawayer
Guido, it would be great to see you test drive the 997 and compare it to both the 991 and new cayman and boxster. You have a blog post comparing the new cayman to the 997. Love the professionalism of your videos. Keep it up.
Boiler.Maker : Thanks ! Well, at the moment I can only get new Porsches and I already talked about the differences between 991 and 997 in my first 991 review from 2012:' 2012 / 2013 Porsche 911 (991) Carrera S PDK ' Test Drive & Review - TheGetawayer There's a loss of mechanical feel, mainly because of the new electric steering, but the chassis is much better in the 991, especially at highspeeds above 240 km'h. I'm personally not the biggest Boxster/ Cayman fan, but the driving experience is very very similiar to the more expensive 911. A Boxster GTS is a sweet sweet car and abit of a bargain looking at the 991 range :)
Nice review man. I agree with your last statement - you buy one of these to escape and enjoy the elements. I was going to ask about buffeting - but you already answered. I know you've been wanting to review one of these for a while! Do they come in 6MT?
Great review Guido. Interesting observation about the wind entering the cabin at higher speeds. I must say, that mechanism is over the top, i.e. ridiculous. I hope Porsche soften up and let you review the Macan. Those bad boys need a spanking.
*thumbsup*
Great review!! Personally, I've always preferred targa tops over regular convertibles, but I agree the circulating wind noise due to the rear windshield is a con you don't want to over look in considering these vehicles.
Great video. I have had my red Boxter S for a year now and have no regrets, just fun every time I get in it .Not sure I would need any more power than this has , as i have yet to go anywhere near the speed limit of this car. Would I like the 911 targa. Sure thing, but that wind noise would get distracting. enjoy the moment.
This car will sell for its looks....period.....for the pure 911 driving experience though.... I guess one cud be overjoyed driving a Carrera 4S....let alone the track specials.......awesome video though......Brilliant
As always, great review again Guido. The wind buffeting part was a good tip indeed. The wind management in the cabriolet (with the wind-deflector up) is too good in my opinion, you don't get the feeling of a true open-air car. I would actually expect that kind of feeling more likely in the Targa, but it seems that Porsche didn't quite manage to get that done properly. Also I think it's a shame that the roof is electrically operated. That's for me the main reason why I wouldn't want one. Too many fragile parts that can rattle or brake and Porsche doesn't have a very reliable history with rattling roofs 🙊. They should have made the electric roof optional.... In my opinion, the best open top Porsche is the Boxster, but hey... I might be biased ;) Nevertheless, it is definitely one of the very best looking Porsches and IMHO even one of the best looking 911s ever. From that point of view, Porsche did a marvelous job!
Only fair to be biased, Suzanne ;) The roof does feel solid at high speed, but of course I can't tell how it will hold up over time. I love the look, but I think I'd personally drive a normal Cabriolet. Hope you get to drive a Targa, Suzanne, to tell me your impressions :)
I think it's very cool the way the convertible top opens. I don't fall into the eagle eye category that can tell the difference between every 911 though.
Another great review! Glad Porsche went back to the silver roll bar, the 993 and 997 targas always looked weird to me. Great advice about the potential wind buffeting. Now what I would love to see is a Boxster GTS with a manual targa top.
Nice review. I know some people would disagree, but I'd like to see a review on the NC and ND mx-5's sometime in the future. Here's to hoping you can get them :)
Jeff Cook : Not really that easy to tell a german pr-department of any import brand that I want to review one of their cars in english, since they only focus on the german market here. That's why I mainly review german cars :)
Looks amazing, but if I had to choose between 911C2S and this Targa, even if prices were the same, my money would go to the coupe :) This complicated design and added weight just frightens me. EXCELLENT review, by the way. I am always on the edge of my seat when I see your videos in my sub-box :)
I wish I could, but Porsche only gives me two testcars this year. I talked about this in a video update, I made : ' First 991 Targa Impressions & GT3 Test Update ' - TheGetawayer
Wow you save the best for last when you said you put the cell phone down put the top down and all your problems go away I am poor s t a r g a z e in the past air cold and I had the same sensation looking to getting into a new 1991 Probably a 2014 or 2015 and you are 100% right life just gets better love your review and love the way you explained it keep up the good work it shows
Awesome review - awesome car. As soon as the 991 targa came out, I was stunned by its elegance! But it would not make the choice easier - if I would have the money - Boxster GTS, 911 CS2 convertible, the targa or the GT3??? The only thing, which I don't like, are the blue leather. I think, except of dark red, brown and black leather, Porsche interior looks hideous, after a couple of years [well not only Porsche interior - but I rarely see other cars with orange or blue leather inside...].
It's a bit darker than it appears on my videos. Have a picture on instagram of the interior that does it more justice. Guess it really depends what you want. As driver's car the GT3 and GTS are in a different league for sure ;)
TheGetawayer I think, it is not only, how the color looks today - but how does it look in 5 or 10 years. A Porsche is a classic [even if it is new], and you might want to keep it for quite some time. I have seen hideous interior colors in used Porsches... For the "choice" (anyway could not afford any of them new], I am really divided, of the drive abilities, the comfort, the design features. I always thought, I wanted to have a Cayman - but then I drove a Boxster - and the "open air" is just a feature, which I don't wanna miss! Maybe Porsche should make a GT3 targa - with manual removable roof - that would be something...
Guido, so the only real caveat is wind buffeting when the top is opened at a high speed? Wasn't there any serious rattle or squeak from the top and its mechanism? I'm really curious about this matter, as I'm planning to buy this 991 Targa. By the way, your comment about the glass top of 993-, 996-, 997-Targas looking like a greenhouse is so apposite. I totally concur. This 991's non-glass top makes it the real Targa. :) I like this color-scheme in Agate Grey: Porsche 911 Targa (991) | Video | Test 2014 | Fahrbericht Agate Grey Metallic with Garnet Red interior.
I didn't notice any rattles or sounds. And even at almost 300 Km'h on the autobahn with the top closed, the noise is not too bad actually. It feels pretty solid, but I have no idea how it holds up over time of course. Test car had 13k km on the clock and was totally fine :)
TheGetawayer Thank you for your prompt reply. Yes, this Targa-top seems to be quite solid. It may be less prone to rattles than the glass sunroof of 991 coupe. I like it.
Fantastic review Sir! Subscribed! Who needs DRIVE+ anyway, Europeans reviewing European cars on European roads is the way it should be - What do the Americans know anyway... ;)
Baerchenization : Durchaus vergleichbar.
This is the most beautiful 911. Ever. Who cares if it’s a little heavier or a little slower. You take the most beautiful girl home not the one that runs the fastest.
I feel kind of weird about the rollbar. I know it resembles the old 911 Targa and looks like an awesome revival of it to Porsche enthusiasts, but I personally wouldn't like this without knowing why they did it this way. Though I guess that's what Porsche is known for: being conservative with their designs. It's what makes the brand be either consistantly awesome or boring and my opinion, why many people switch over to Jaguar etc. recently. They want something "truely new".
NishikoRyuu : You do have a point there and I loved reading your comment. The reason for me being a 911-fan and loving these cars, is just their driving experience. The engine, they way they feel on the road...It's just the ulimate driver's car. I love the looks too, but they sure aren't for anyone. There is a great german book about this car and its history. I could quote about 1000 reaons more, why this car is so special, but the best way is to just drive it and experience it. A Jag is interesting, but from a driver's point of view just not as focused as a 911...Greetings from germany, Guido aka TheGetawayer
TheGetawayer Thank you for your reply! It's not difficult to guess that you are a huge 911-fan and you name very good reasons to be one in your videos. It's nice to get so many real life footages of my favorite cars from you! Since I am German, too, I am very curious about which book you mean! Thank you in advance, Guido, and cheers from one of your fan-girls! :)
NishikoRyuu : It's just called ' 911 ' by Ulf Poschardt and you can find it on Amazon. I got it at the 911 Turbo Launch from Porsche as a gift. Thanks for the compliments, I really do appreciate it ! Grüsse
Splitting hairs, But I'd have preferred the lid to have been carbon fibre, to complete the solid look. just think the small piece of rag looks a bit odd.
Massive fan of the 991 Targa look - but for me I'd rather have less weight / less complicated roof system and lift the roof panel myself like the original.....And I would leave the rear wiper off!...spoils the clean look.
Wow you save the best for last when you said you put the cell phone down put the top down and all your problems go away I am poor s t a r g a z e in the past air cold and I had the same sensation looking to getting into a new 1991
nice review. i do like how the targa looks. i like it more then the convertible. BUT. I simply dont want to like this stupid roof mechanism. why. why does it have to be so complicated and couse of that heavy. they should have made the same solution like lamborghini with the aventador roof. or like the corvette targa roofs. in this case im really disapointed from porsche. when the fat man from kentucky can make it in the new 2015 ZO6 for f.... sake why cant porsche. sorry getawayer dont take it personally really like your reviews but that stupid roof makes me angry. but maybe are the future buyer of the targa so lazy that they need such a big ass roof butler. who nows. porsche does for sure. stupid roof.

Edy B Thanks ! I get alot of spam comments lately, so reading your words was really nice :) Greetings from germany, Guido
Very slick review indeed. Great camera work. Interesting to hear about the added wind buffering. Great work my friend. Impressive.
Thanks Nick Murray ! You keep up the great work too !
I really enjoy yours and Nick's work! Great stuff.
Dan Mosqueda : Thanks ! I appreciate that !
Nick, methinks you should buy a 991 Targa and review it. There will be an extremely low probability that you get two Lemon 991s consecutively. ;)
actually ...he did get 2 lemons….@@brycelee7373

Attilio Rizzo Jr. Thank you !
Hi Guido! I see you got your hands on the Targa finally. Bless you good sir! An outstanding review and well worth the wait. Keep doing what you do. We so enjoy your work.
Great tip @ 05:31; that's what a real reviewer does. Thanks, G.

So glad to see a "real" Targa back in the Porsche lineup. I used to own a 964 Targa and loved it. Thought your comment about the greenhouse was great!
I really enjoy your reviews. The silent part starting at 3:32 really took me into the car, great effect!
Nice review, keep them coming. This review helped me to make up my mind to buy a Targa 4S instead of a cab S (after a test drive). Thanks!

Guido, Excellent Review as usual!!! You answer the questions that we have in mind and don't provide filler. Thanks Dude!!!

The Best 911 Targa Review so far!
Thank you, you really focused the point, Driving Eperience!
+Pedro G You are welcome, glad you like the video !
When I get the opportunity, this is the version 911 I will be buying. I love the retro styling.

Thanks buddy ! I loved your car, so much fun indeed :)
You did it again. As always, great review.
Thanks ! I appreciate that !
I have been looking forward to this review for some time. Thank you, Guido, it was awesome! Btw, I really like what you were listening to at 2:47 ;-)
Arthur Sperotto : Amazing that you guys spotted the music I was playing, haha :) Good test for the Burmester stereo ;)
TheGetawayer Oh, definitely! And I'm guessing the Burmester passed the test.

david dykeman : You're welcome !
Great review and that blue on blue looks awesome! Porsche needs to let you review all there models.....???
Thanks ! I wish they would but as I mentioned in one of my last update videos, this was my last proper roadtest for this year

Thanks for a great review. You just made my weekend. The best looking 991 and the best colour combo by far. Keep up the good work.
Alex Klotzbuecher : Thanks Alex ! Glad you liked it !
I absolutely adore this beautiful blue interior. I don't care for the PDK automatic though. I love the 911 targa. My unlce has a 68' SC targa. Thanks.
thanks for you great review. the wind thing was important for me and no other journalist was talking about it!!

Great review, subscribed!
Great review!! Personally, I've always preferred targa tops over regular convertibles, but I agree the circulating wind noise due to the rear windshield is a con you don't want to over look in considering these vehicles.
Looks great, breaking the norm was an excellent choice by Porsche
Another great review, Guido. One day, I'd love to get your take on the new NSX...if it ever comes out;)
J Lo I'd love to drive it :)
as always great review, and a very important comment about the extra turbulences in the car, I doubt many reviewers will pick that up
Carphile : Thanks ! I thought it was very important to talk about and stress it out. Glad to hear that so many viewers appreciate that :)
This video definitely made my day.
Blaz S I'm very glad to hear that, thanks !
Great review as always mate cheers
j benj : Thanks, buddy !
I might be biased ;)
Nevertheless, it is definitely one of the very best looking Porsches and IMHO even one of the best looking 911s ever.
Good review as always. Bit of a transformer 911 with that complicated roof design, but I like it anyway
I think it's very cool the way the convertible top opens. I don't fall into the eagle eye category that can tell the difference between every 911 though.
But you know italian exotics way better than I do, Chris ;)
Another great review! Glad Porsche went back to the silver roll bar, the 993 and 997 targas always looked weird to me. Great advice about the potential wind buffeting.
Now what I would love to see is a Boxster GTS with a manual targa top.
***** : Haha, that would sure look great. A Cayman Targa ! Lovely idea !
Great review Guido
Nice review. I know some people would disagree, but I'd like to see a review on the NC and ND mx-5's sometime in the future. Here's to hoping you can get them :)
Jeff Cook : Not really that easy to tell a german pr-department of any import brand that I want to review one of their cars in english, since they only focus on the german market here. That's why I mainly review german cars :)
Thanks so much for this particular review.
You are very welcome !
Looks amazing, but if I had to choose between 911C2S and this Targa, even if prices were the same, my money would go to the coupe :) This complicated design and added weight just frightens me.
EXCELLENT review, by the way. I am always on the edge of my seat when I see your videos in my sub-box :)
I say they should make a targa turbo
991 Targa with blue interior, damn it looks good.
it would be great if porsche made optional polycarbonate rear for targa :-)
Great review... I love the old new Targa look, but I would have preferred a simpler, lighter roof mechanism.
This is my dream car. The original was now this is. One day, I shall have one.
Brilliant video as always! Do you think you will be able to get hold of a Boxter GTS anytime soon?
I wish I could, but Porsche only gives me two testcars this year. I talked about this in a video update, I made : ' First 991 Targa Impressions & GT3 Test Update ' - TheGetawayer
Awesome car, I really like the Targa
Wow you save the best for last when you said you put the cell phone down put the top down and all your problems go away I am poor s t a r g a z e in the past air cold and I had the same sensation looking to getting into a new 1991 Probably a 2014 or 2015 and you are 100% right life just gets better love your review and love the way you explained it keep up the good work it shows
Nice video!
Somebody needs to give you a job in this buisness, either tv or Porsche itself... Fab work mate!
Guido..I have two month's to decide..if you care to help..X5 M or Cayenne Turbo? I'm thinking Cayenne. Thanks in advance..Ralph
winsto221 : Of course Cayenne, Ralph ! Watch my Cayenne GTS review if you like ;)
Awesome review - awesome car.
TheGetawayer
I think, it is not only, how the color looks today - but how does it look in 5 or 10 years.
Another gr8 review
LordLauderdale : Thanks !
enjoy your videos! a tip: there is no need to say "in my opinion." this is already implied
+ckarsenal I'm sorry, sometimes I notice this myself during the edit :/
My dream car
please do a review on AUDI RS5
please
Great, thanks Guido
Tony Åström You are very welcome, Tony !
:) I like this color-scheme in Agate Grey:
Porsche 911 Targa (991) | Video | Test 2014 | Fahrbericht
Agate Grey Metallic with Garnet Red interior.
I like it.
thanks Guido! show!!
Funny, I saw another review of the targa yesterday and he said there was no wind buffeting. He lied!
I'm not a fan of Porsche targa but I can look at that folding mechanism all day
TangoR34 : It looks like something out of Transformers :D
if it weren't so slow i would get one. Great vid
Thanks !
I think this in a turbo manual version would be my choice daily driver.
👍👍😊
Fantastic review Sir! Subscribed! Who needs DRIVE+ anyway, Europeans reviewing European cars on European roads is the way it should be - What do the Americans know anyway... ;)
The actuation seems overly complicated as you mentioned. I like the targa design though
amill1563 : Agreed. But at least it works flawless as far as I can tell :)
Apparently the engine is not accessible! So you cant take it to your local mechanics to change the carburettors or the distrubutor!
Carburettors? LMAO
Your German accent make this review great :D
Haha, I'm glad you enjoyed it ;)
This is the most beautiful 911. Ever. Who cares if it’s a little heavier or a little slower. You take the most beautiful girl home not the one that runs the fastest.
I agree, great comment!
Are those backseats?
john harker : Yes
Makes me feel better about my '12 5.0's backseat!
Targas make the best cars
Massive fan of the 991 Targa look - but for me I'd rather have less weight / less complicated roof system and lift the roof panel myself like the original.....And I would leave the rear wiper off!...spoils the clean look.
yardelli You have a point. I think we just have to appreciate how the car looks with the top down. That's just a huge win for me :)
Wow you save the best for last when you said you put the cell phone down put the top down and all your problems go away I am poor s t a r g a z e in the past air cold and I had the same sensation looking to getting into a new 1991
nope, rather have a 911 carrera or bump up to supercar level turbo. :)
Chase your troubles away drive a 911T today
Yes :)
ahhh listening to "50 Cent" eh? haha
You have to without a PSE when you have a Burmester system in the car :)
Very true!
1:14 das beste Beispiel von deutschem Humor... :P
nice review. i do like how the targa looks. i like it more then the convertible.
