We left California after 35 years. We saw the trend where folks in California were moving, but staying in the west. After sitting in L.A. traffic for four hours, We decided to go where nobody else was going and we love it. We live on a lake in New Hampshire. It's quiet. No traffic. People are polite and respectful. We had no mask mandate (the Gov. left the decision up to us)...We see lawn signs "We love our police." and we do. Small town. It's lovely.
@@livinginidaho We sold up in Dec. 2018 and arrived here in Jan. 2019 closed on a house in March. House prices were incredible. We got a 1922 American Four Square with an add on bonus room that's 24 x26 feet (I couldn't believe it.) Nearly 3.000 sq. ft., and attached garage. I understand the couple who shared their feelings about Idaho....we too found Calif. too noisy, too techie, too crowded, every mall looked the same. Here we buy fruit/veg/eggs/meat directly from the farmers. It's fabulous. It's a blue state with a red Governor who keeps getting re-elected because he's wonderful. It's a gun state (hunting not shooting up the schools) Kids walk to school. It's safe. Clean air. clean lakes....Good old fashioned values. A bit like Idaho maybe?
@@livinginidaho You know, I think it might be a bit like Idaho. I think people should look at the character, the personality of the place they want to move to. It's informative. The single most important value here is respect for others and kids are scary polite and nobody approves of extremist behavior. Even the drivers are polite. It was strange at first but now we're one of them. Keep doing your videos!
Moving to Idaho in May 24. I have fought for 25 years in California and I'm done. I have been to Idaho several time's to feel it out. What attracted me to Idaho is Faith ,Family and Freedom way of life.!!! I don't blame the people of Idaho for saying stay out dont bring your garbage with you. I will fight to keep Idaho Red when I move, so excited to be around like minded people. Looking to retire volunteer and keep Idaho the Gem state that it is. Many blessings to you.
Kate, they will never accept you and you will never get a feel for it here until you live here and it's not good. I visit idaho twice and thought it was a good choice but after i moved it took 1week and i knew it was a mistake. California has allot of problems but its still the better choice.
@@levinoble Thank you for you honest opinion. I have a few friends that have moved to Meridian,Twin Falls and Boise they love it. With that said I will have some support. Honestly I have given California enough of me. Many blessings to you.
It’s sounds like you and Kate and have different values and what she values Idaho has. Idaho isn’t for everyone, it sounds like it wasn’t for you but that doesn’t mean it won’t work beautifully for Kate. You don’t even know why Kate wants to leave California.
@livinginidaho Can't really talk values or morals when this part of idaho doesn't have idaho values or morals anymore. My point is if you're trying to escape California, don't move here because it really is a smaller California. In 5 more years, forget it it will be worse than California. It's ok tho please everyone move to idaho and enjoy the California lifestyle here....I moved here from California, so I have no room to talk or give an honest opinion on what I have witnessed.
Grew up in the Bay Area, got my degree in So Cal, lived in Portland for 23 years. I moved to the Boise area two years ago and may never go back to the west coast again. Politicians have ruined all three states there. If you choose to relocate to Idaho, remember your motivation for doing so.
@@justindozone2160 And those people are irrational clowns that voted for unhinged power hungry control freaks devoid of any traditional values that made this country great. @@livinginidaho Pretty sure they mean "don't vote for liberal progressive policies or politicians" after you move to Idaho. They will ultimately bring the same things that have ruined Cali, western Oregon, & western Washington to Idaho. You fled those places for a reason.
They gave me language for what I’m feeling. I’ve loved CA for decades but it’s so emotionally loud an oppressive now, it’s exhausting. I no longer feel safe.
Idaho is not crime free. Each week I read the County sheriff reports and the only reason why California has more crime is because they more people 40 million compared to under 2 million. Idaho can never grow that big because we have little livable land. Just look at a map to see where all the population is. Either North Idaho or on or near the Snake River, excluding Hell's Canyon.
@@DrDingus I'm just reading information out of the Idaho County Free Press dispatch log. Of course there is more crime in California. It has 40 million people. Idaho isn't at 2 million yet. And if you look at a map you can see that there is very little livable land. 60% is owned by the fed. government. And I don't run the government so I can't change that. I live in the largest county by area in Idaho but most land is owned by the Forest Service and no one can live in our mountainous region anyway. We have lots of strong opinions in our paper, both right and left, Christian and non-Christian. It isn't all red or all blue and every so often we have a murder and a lot of drug activity. We are a half-way point with drug traffic between Lewiston, Idaho and Missoula, Montana. In the last year one school was nearly closed down because someone said that the school in a town of 300 was distributing porn, but after a few letters to the editor, that push died out. And then one week a newcomer put up a large Confederate flag in our local city of 600. That stayed up a couple weeks but complaints and down it went. A pickup with a fuck Biden sign on the side got so much flak in the paper that it was taken down. We are just like most towns in very rural America. People try to do what they think is the right thing to do but it often disagrees with someone else. I even write about once a month and will probably write a letter tomorrow. I lived in Washington on an island before moving here and we had less crime there than in Idaho, but we still had some.
@@PatrickThreewit Everything you said about geography and population was why I asked if you understand 'per capita'. Also, sure, you can find small communities across many states that have much lower crime. I live in a fully gated community in the hills on a fully private lake in a high crime state, I'm at least an hour from any large city but I'm in a very niche situation and lucky to be able to live here. However, you drive 25 minutes in any direction and it's crackheads everywhere even in the smaller towns and rural areas here in CA. According to violent crime statistics from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting, Idaho ranks 10th safest state in the country, while California ranks 45th. Yes, only 5 states and DC have a higher crime rate than California PER CAPITA. In fact, the violent crime rate in CA is slightly more than 2x the rate per capita than in Idaho. That's not total crime, that's crimes per 100,000 people (per capita), so total population is not really relevant here. Washington state falls right around the national average which is still about 75% higher than Idaho. Things have changed..
my daughter moved to Idaho a few years ago, bought a house on her own and loves it! We are also leaving California. The people here are just nuts! It's just too expensive to put up with all the crazy that goes on. When we are there it's like all the stress goes away-the minute I come back I just feel terrible again. California is a democratic crap hole period. The things I see in retail are just horrendous! I'm so over it. We live 30 miles north of Petaluma and totally understand why you all left.
I live in Idaho and I haven't been to Boise in 15 years because of the population change. Too many people there for me. I currently live halfway between Boise and Coeur d 'Alene.
We made the leap in March of ‘20. Best thing we’ve ever done. Oddly, Emmet was my first love. That view from Freezeout overlook just blew me away. Sadly, we just couldn’t find a property there. We ended up four miles outside Middleton and pinch ourselves for being so fortunate. I worked for a year after moving and met tons of cop/firefighters that commuted between the Bay Area and Boise. Treasure Valley is full of California refugees. At least half the people we meet here weren’t born in this state.
Emmett is a nice place but it is not rural compared to where I live and I live in the Panhandle. I looked it up and that term, rural, is hard to explain.
I'm a move-in 31 years ago. I didn't vote Trump or Biden. I like many of the ideas of Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney. But since I don't like government control or helping the super-rich I will not vote for either presidential nominees. What color would you classify me as?
@@PatrickThreewit You don't like helping super rich and government control but you like those two totalitarian establishment mouth pieces? That makes zero sense.
Makes sense. Summary: I live in Idaho because the scenery reminds me of California. I live in Idaho because I don't want to vaccinate my kids. I want to water my grass.
Three days ago, I got my covid update shot. I recently watched one of these videos on the freest states in the nation. #9 an#10 freest were Washington and Oregon with Maine being the freest. Idaho was not in the top ten freest. Idaho is opposed to marijuana but in favor of alcohol and is in favor of telling a woman what she can do with her body. Besides all that, Idaho has very little livable land so when more people move there where will they move to? Maybe the two fast growing places that control that state? And as for scenery most of Idaho misses on that fact. Only the Panhandle has good scenery. And by the way, I've lived in Idaho a total of 31 years, in both the pretty and the ugly parts.
@@PatrickThreewit Most free on what metrics? The fact you think having the right to murder an unborn human is government control should tell me mostly what I need to know about your other opinions.. but just curious how they ranked it that way. Easy access to abortion would not be my definition of 'free'. Been around pot heads most of my life and those who create an entire culture around getting high is exhausting. I don't like government control for the most part, but I grew out of my full blown libertarian phase shortly after high school when I stopped worshipping capitalism and idealism in general. The government historically has, and should enforce morality. The only question is whether that government represents your form of morality and those it governs over. If you don't agree with the morality those in that area have voted to be enforced, then you have plenty of states (and other countries) who will be happy to let you get high all day and abort as many babies as you like. There's definitely no shortage of that these days.
@@DrDingus If you are telling me that abortion is murder, then I hope you are also saying that the 4 verses in the Bible telling people to kill babies is also murder. Now you know that if I am telling you this, that I must study the Bible a lot and know where to find those verses. Practice what you preach.
@@DrDingus Don't complain to me. I didn't write the list. Look up CATO online. They say why they did that. they have two designations. One is personal freedom and the other is economic and the list is opposite. Corporations move to Idaho because the state is friendlier and they can make more money and Corporations are always trying to help the middle class. Right. If killing babies is wrong then the Bible is wrong because I can find several scriptures that God says to kill babies. If you are not a Christian then maybe you are correct in your calling abortion murder, but if you are, what will you call the Bible?
The fact so many people moving from California is disheartening to hear initially. Although, they may be the good ones. As long as they don’t change the politics.
Great video! We moved to Idaho Falls from California 7 months ago and we love it here. We agree with this couple. It's worth the adjustments and changes.
@@livinginidaho I moved to Idaho Falls from the inland Empire area in California and got a career in Law Enforcement here in IF, no regerts, such a beautiful town and downtown is popping.
I was born and raised in Idaho so was my wife. I took a job in Fresno, CA in 1990 and from 1991 on I was trying to leave Californa. I finally retired in 2019 and moved back to North Cental Idaho. What this couple is talking about is very true. California Politics is very much in your face and loud. I have no desire to go back unless I absolutely have to. Wait until you go to DMV big shock (a nice one!)
Emmett is an interesting choice. Very rural and a bit of a drive to Boise. Not much in the way of shops, but if thats what you like. Also, the smoke can get very bad as fires from 8 states and Canada converge there. Enjoy your freedom though, people in CA don't realize they are the frog in the boiling pot.
The frog analogy is a perfect picture. I felt that way living in Oregon... once I relocated to Idaho you start to realize you were the frog. Emmett had land for them. They wanted a big piece of land to live on. Funny enough, they have since moved to closer into town outside of Emmet. They found the land was taking up to much of their time and they wanted to be closer to school and friends.
@@livinginidaho Yes, I just visited CA for the first time in 5 years and was shocked at how much worse it has gotten in such a short time. I wondered how people can still justify living there. I always hear "the weather," and that prompted me to think about the frog analogy. Emmet is beautiful, but a bit remote. Appreciate the success story.
Emmett is not rural to me. the Treasure Valley is not rural. People there don't realize they are in the boiling pot. The biggest city in my county has 3200 people, my nearest town has 700 people and if I look out one window I can see a residence across a canyon. That's rural. Definitely not Emmett.
We left California Feb 2023 because I didn't want my kids to go to the schools there and even the doctors are getting weird. Glad we did it. She said it best, when she said, you don't realize the burden you have on you until you move somewhere else.
We left CA for WY after 62 years. Boise area was runnner-up in our search. Not easy but such an exciting adventure! The move was a fresh start and we left the taxes, crime, drug addicts, and politics behind.

But when I got accepted to school here in BYUI we decided we wanted a on campus experience since we still had a very young family. After moving here we fell in love with small town feel. Not bad if if I am a young guy in his 40's, but as a 78-year old, I will wait to start up my wood splitting until it is a bit warmer. And my elevation here is almost the same as in Boise. So buy warm clothes when you move here. I live in Idaho's mildest weather region but last winter it got to zero for a while and the snow didn't melt for quite a while.
Wasn't a Cali native, but made my money there, when hubby passed, I retired and moved to Idaho six years ago. Best move ever! The only sad thing is so many Californians moving here and bring their political leanings. Don't.
I can relate to this family, I had same experiences after moving from NYC yo Texas, it’s like 2 different countries. My country in African is way more clean than California. Most of the blue states are deteriorating to 4th world countries level
One big difference is that California is more accepting of people from other places. Here in idaho, they seem to be anti anyone... unless you're a native to idaho.
My family left the Bakersfield area in 1954 for an island in Puget Sound,. I’m a conservative native Californian and agree with everything this beautiful couple expressed. I’m seriously considering South Dakota where residency can be established very quickly. To be honest, I’m apprehensive about driving in “red” leaning western states with California plates! Idaho is very intriguing also.
The one topic I was hoping to hear about was if they were welcomed in the state. For example when they would tell someone "we're from California", what were the reactions? I've had my eye on Idaho for a long time but if I'll be hated for being there, even though I'm conservative, that doesn't sound like a good existence.
I find people are really welcoming… and there is a high chance the person you’re talking to isn’t from Idaho either. You may find one grumpier person here or there that will voice their opinion but that would be far and few between if at all.

I love your videos, because they are so informative and genuine. Thank you for the great content! I'm considering moving to Idaho in 5-7 years, because my boyfriend and I don't see how we can afford to start a family in LA. Aside from cost, we don't like the amount of crime and homelessness as well. It's very tough for us to consider this change, because all our family is here and we don't see them relocating. Additionally, we're concerned about job security. My boyfriend is a graphic artist and works remotely for a graphic apparel company, so he can likely work from anywhere. However I am an interior designer and work for an architecture firm. I looked at firms in Boise and it seems like slim pickings with only a handful of options. How do you view the architecture / design industry in the Treasure Valley and do you see it changing in the future?
We moved out of california last year to Vegas, Nevada. Over 50 years. Left everyone behind. Good restarting point, but definitely not thrilled with living here. Looking into other states.
My wife and I were born and raised in So. Cal. We had friends move to the Treasure valley. We visited them in 1990. We fell in love the place. We came up many times, then in 2006 we bought two and a half acres in “Far north” Idaho. The plan was to build a house on the land. That didn’t work out for us. When I retired in 2019, we looked for a existing house. We found one that was built in 2005, 1800 sq Ft. Our home in So. Cal. Was 1200 sq Ft. We made a small amount on our home in Cal. We put $100,000 down on a $339,000 home, so we do have a mortgage that is about half of what he had in Cali. We live 1/2 mile from the largest lake in Idaho. We live in a forest, yes, we get snow here, as I type this we have about one foot on the ground. We have had three feet on the ground. No big deal, I’m retired. My wife still works and has a 20 min commute to work. We bought Subarus before we moved here. The roads (major ones) are plowed and maintained. She drives wet roads but not icy or snowy roads. Our dirt road is not plowed, we can get to the hwy easily. We sold the 2.5 acres and used a portion to buy a boat. In the spring and summer, we can be found on the lake. We don’t miss the hell hole of So. Cal. And have no desire to move or eve go back! Life is SO MUCH BETTER OUTSIDE OF California. All the leftist B.S. of California is not up here. We LOVE living here. If we have five cars on the highway around us, we are in a traffic jam……………… have to watch for deer is all……………… OH, DON’t try to move to north Idaho…….. we’re full……..😅

Well I would move from LA but idaho I don’t know man. Look, every where you go there’s is going to be a problem if there isn’t, in the future there will be. One has to think okay in the next 5 years if there is a problem in Idaho do we move again? Cause that’s just not a healthy mind set to have.
There are big differences between states, and by moving you may be able to find something that works better for you. No state is perfect, and not state is really the same.
It's not a healthy mindset? Who arranges their entire life and career around the political beliefs of their neighbors. How asinine. If it's for safety reasons... then sure... but many people move purely for political purposes.

Yesterday at Napa buying a hydraulic line for my tractor I had to wait until one was made up. I began talking to a clerk, it being a slow day at that hour. He had moved to north Idaho several years ago and had purchased a place for $160,000. A few years later he sold it for over $400,000. He wanted to move into a conservative area. He said that Californians are pouring into north Idaho and bringing their liberal ideas with them. That startled me because I had heard that North Idaho was super conservative, but evidently it is turning liberal. But even with his property gain, he was unable to find raw land or a house in the county he is now in and has to rent. I don't have much land but I would never sell at any price and there are many in that same boat. There is very little livable land in Idaho. Just look at a map as to where current populations are. So many places are becoming the new California. It is coming to my county but slower than many places and the climate is mild and it's in Idaho.
their mistake is thinking California is all the same in every nook and cranny. They could have moved to Redding, Alturas, or Susanville, and gotten the exact same outcome.

I was originally looking in Emmett, but found North Idaho and knew it was the place for me. After 54 years of living in CA and a 30 year LE career, I found absolute peace and "my people" in North Idaho. Glad you made it out! No doubt CA cops have made you a mint in real estate money.
To say you have no Homeless in Idaho isnt true they have over 20,000. This couple said the homes are more affordable yes that is true but there is reason a lot less people wasnt to be in Idaho and it means properties appreciate at a lot slower rate. There is reason why California has 40 million plus population and Idaho has 1.7 million.
We are a Christian Mexican family and planning to move to Idaho. We are educated RNs. We are concerned about our brown skin color. But we do not share the liberal politics of California. Any advice?
I think you'll be just fine. I don't think there is anything to worry about. I often get asked this by couples and from everything I've heard and experienced your skin color doesn't matter here. Just read all of what happens in your place to move not just the conservative part. There are some parts of Idaho that are way more racist than others.
Love how they said Sonoma county. That’s where we’re from! I’m so tired of living here and worrying about fires! It’s so dang expensive here too! Definitely thinking on moving to Idaho!
And this is why I am leaving Idaho after 25 years. The CA influx is bringing what they tried to leave making Idaho a sprawl of cheap construction, traffic, and rudeness.
Let me save you 10 minutes. They left because they dont like democratic politics. They spent most of the time talking about whats wrong with California rather than specific reasons why Idaho is amazing. Wonder if theyll actually stick around after making it through a few rocky mountain winters.
I think you guys picked pretty good with Emmett. I used to work for St Luke's security as a former cop Las at job because I blew the whistle on abusive security officers. I ended up working at Cherry gulch of therapeutic boarding school for boys that's up in the hills there Northside of Emmett. Sadly they only cater to Rich families I'm leaving Caldwell Nampa Boise and meridian, I always thought meridian was the best. I never bought another home since leaving California because the prices are still horrendous. I would warn you though that the progressive nature of California is rubbing off even in cities such as Caldwell, where my ex-wife is now on city council and she cannot be trusted. My youngest is about to get hired by Boise PDM believe, but he doesn't want me to live with them so I'm stuck in Grand Junction Colorado where it's kind of a larger Emmett although half the population is female on female if you get my drift. I work at a hospital here at security and it's pretty cool but they're going to shove the mess and vaccines down our throat again, which means it's time for me to retire. I had to go back and add this part, and that working there from 06-2017, I drive a regular passenger car and I never had a problem going or coming from work because of the snow, including Emmett.
Movers ought to have jobs before planning. Movers with kids need to consider their kids education...when i grew up in idaho the education system sucked. Yes, CA political system sucks, but Idaho has some politics that also sucks and we like it. Yes, about half of Idaho population has guns but we don't generally use them unless necessary. Drugs have been in Idaho for decades. alcohol use is heavy in Idaho. when i grew up, religion and skin color wasn't really an issue, but we tended to despise those who wouldn't take care of their families. The average income in Idaho is lower than most states. We don't tend to follow trends as readily as most other states. knowing that, the teenagers do follow trends (such as drug use).
If you want real change from California, don't move to treasure valley, or anywhere in Idaho for that matter, it's just Southern California 2.0 at this point. Keep going east. Counting the days until I can get out of this dump.
I too, am considering, I’m very strong terms, moving in to the treasure Valley. About the only thing that I am uncertain of at this time is whether or not, I’ll be able to tolerate, or perhaps, even accept, 10:24 for months of winter.. I understand that Meridian has a very southern California feel about it, and I would like that. About the only thing that I cannot abide with California any much longer is the amount of bullshit that’s coming out of Sacramento and local governments, forcing us to bend to their will.
Look on a map for low elevations. Boise is around 2800 feet, similar to places on the mid to lower Panhandle. Eastern Idaho is above 4000 feet and is very cold in the winter. Look at NOAH weather which will show you the forecasts for any Idaho city. I'm in Idaho, 100 feet lower than Boise and Thanksgiving day will be around a high of 49 degrees. Idaho even has a seaport making that spot the warmest in the state.
We moved here in 2020 after I retired. We moved to Northern Idaho. We had been coming up to Idaho since 1990 to visit friends that moved to Moores Creek estates. We fell in love with the state. We bought our first property in Bonner’s Ferry in 2006. Decided not to build on the land(2.5 acres)in 2019. Sold our house that was in the hell hole(Cali…. My wife and I were born and raised there) and bought a place in Hope. The quality of life here is night and day better here. We don’t miss the ocean, even I come from a founding family of a beach city, because we live .5 miles from the largest lake in the state. The only reason I will return to hell, is when I need to put my parents in the ground, then I will be DONE with the place. We wake up every day in disbelief of being in such a beautiful place…….. I found myself this summer wishing it was winter so the tourists would not be clogging up hwy 200..😂
I left because watching 60 years of purposeful dystopia creation, a third world crime scene and an abusive criminal government, was too much for me. Come on earthquake.
We left California after 35 years. We saw the trend where folks in California were moving, but staying in the west. After sitting in L.A. traffic for four hours, We decided to go where nobody else was going and we love it. We live on a lake in New Hampshire. It's quiet. No traffic. They gave me language for what I’m feeling. I’ve loved CA for decades but it’s so emotionally loud an oppressive now, it’s exhausting. I no longer feel safe.
Yep, I hear this all the time from people who reach out.
@@PatrickThreewit Do you know what 'per capita' is?
I left california for iowa. Such a huge difference. The only real down side is that it's boring but that is a good thing sometimes.
What do you find boring about the place you live in?
There’s got to be some kind of social entertainment that you could be doing.
yea but tornados.

@@PatrickThreewit You don't like helping super rich and government control but you like those two totalitarian establishment mouth pieces? That makes zero sense.

I live in Idaho because the scenery reminds me of California.
I live in Idaho because I don't want to vaccinate my kids.
I want to water my grass.
Lol nailed it
Three days ago, I got my covid update shot.

Emmett is not rural to me. the Treasure Valley is not rural. People there don't realize they are in the boiling pot. The biggest city in my county has 3200 people, my nearest town has 700 people and if I look out one window I can see a residence across a canyon. That's rural. Definitely not Emmett.

Thanks for taking the time to give me feed back. I ended up with a lot of scene cuts because I cut the footage down quite a bit to make it more helpful and concise… but I can see how it could be a bit much. I’ll think through how to find a good middle ground.

Land prices are soaring in Idaho.
We moved out of california last year to Vegas, Nevada. Over 50 years. Left everyone behind. Good restarting point, but definitely not thrilled with living here. Looking into other states.
Born raised in Idaho, now it's becoming another California. Not the same Idaho anymore!
I’m glad that Idaho has worked out so well for you guys.

Love Idaho.
I want to flee CA to ID for all the same reasons. However, I have concerns about it turning into CA as well. I have many friends that moved there, and we pay A LOT for a college kid in ID (out of state tuition & rent are more than CA). I worry that people aren't doing their homework when they vote, and end up voting for RINOS. BSU has their "woke agenda" (President & Mayor). That being said, I love the TV and hate returning to CA. If I end up in ID, I will work to keep it red!
I don't care if people vote red or blue as long as they don't bother me. But I sure as hell won't vote Biden or Trump next election. And I live in rural Idaho.

The average income in Idaho
is lower than most states. We don't tend to follow trends as readily as most other states. knowing that, the teenagers do follow trends (such as drug use).
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

It’s nice to have winters
There is a lot of us in Cali who are more red than you guys in Daho.
If you want real change from California, don't move to treasure valley, or anywhere in Idaho for that matter, it's just Southern California 2.0 at this point. Keep going east. Counting the days until I can get out of this dump.
🎉🎉
It's all good and stuff as long as they don't continue voting the way Californians do.
