OK here we go again quick question my Oldsmobile engine has some screw holes on the side of the block I noticed smoke coming out of them do they need to be plugged up there exactly 8 of them rite by each spark plug
OK so u have it exactly Wer you have yours at so I pull it back out a rotate it 180 degrees to the left or right also my engine is a Oldsmobile 307 with 7a heads also have a edelbroc carburetor no emissions please help been add it for days tried every position
The direction that you rotate the rotor doesn't matter as long as it is pointing 180 degrees from where it was originally pointing. Just out of curiosity, when you swapped the computer controlled Quadrajet carburetor for the Edelbrock did you also swap the computer controlled distributor for a vacuum advance one?
the car was sitting hadn't been started in a while so I just talked the motor out an placed it on another car removed all the computer stuff didn't realize that the distributor had to be timed just pulled it out slap a new hei in it and sealed out the carb as well
Does the accelerator pump and choke work on this new carburetor? If they do I'm starting to think that there may be a problem with an ignition component. one thing I would check before testing ignition components is the firing order.
With no consistently metered fuel being supplied, that could also be the source of back firing. If a fuel line is out of the option for now, try pouring some gas into the vent tube of the carburetor to fill the float bowl. That way the fuel has a chance to be metered properly. Be careful not to over fill the bowl, they don't hold much fuel.
Backfiring is a pretty good indication that the distributor is out of time with the rest of the engine. Usually the rotor is out of time 180 degrees. The way I fix that is rotate the engine until it's at TDC(you don't have to put it on TDC but I usually do) then pull the distributor cap and mark where the rotor tip is pointing. Pull the distributor and when you put it back in, point the rotor tip 180 degrees from where it was originally pointing.
They don't affect whether it starts or not, they are just part of the emission system. When the injection pipes were still on the engine all they did was inject fresh air into the exhaust. But they should be plugged so that exhaust fumes don't get into the interior of the car.
You save my day tanks
You're welcome glad i could help
How did u take the oil pump shaft out?

Yes those are the holes where the A.I.R. Injection pipes used to go into the exhaust runners on the cylinder head. Yes they should be plugged.
Before you install distributor in motor did you put motor at top dead center
Yes
Where do you set the harmonic balancer? 0 or 20?

Would this work for a olds 307?
Yes, the engine in the video is an olds 307

I also installed the new carburetor its a carter 4 barrel but nothing it acts like its gonna start then nothing
Does it fire at all? Or does it just continue to crank?
yeah it trys fire it pops from inside the motor acts like it gonna start then nothing

I actually loaded up a video for you to see what happens when it cranks over it still uploading
Cool I'll take a look at it once it uploads.
no gas line is hooked up to carburetor I'm just pouring gas down the carburetor I installed everything together

I did that to my engine an it won't start just back fires through carburetor

OK come uld that be also a problem why it wasn't firing up

OK back firing stopped did the 180 and it was 180 out thanks a million now just turns over but nothing
That's good. How long has the carburetor sat? Did it have gas in it while it was sitting?
no it just sat for a while battery went dead after awhile gonna get a new one tomorrow finally popes through the muffler before battery went dead
una go try out turn the distributor 180 degrees an pour gas down the vent to fill the floats Kool I'll let you know what happens
Sounds good. Good luck
I removed all the computer stuff and yes it has a vacuum advance
Did the car backfire before the distributor was removed or only after?
damm motor won't start still acts like its gonna the nothing
Does the accelerator pump and choke work on the carburetor?
yes they do
If you would like to I can probably make a more detailed video of how to check the ignition system on these engines. I have a book on these cars.

ad this point anything will help bro thanks
