    This reminds me of one of my 1980s road trip adventures I drove from my Fairbanks, AK home on down to college in Oregon. Back then, the 300+ mile Cassiar cutoff portion was unpaved, but still saved 100 miles or so over taking the Alaska Highway through BC. So I took it. Only I wasn't smart enough to carry extra gas. I thought I had it planned out well enough, as I would have 3 gas stations to choose from when I getting low on fuel. So in the middle of nowhere in BC I was getting low on fuel and, just as planned, got to the first gas station. "Out of Unleaded" was the sign posted. So I continued on to station #2. "Out of Gas" was posted there. So onto my last chance before I ran out of fuel. Station #3 was closed and locked up. A sign on the door of the adjacent restaurant said "Gone hunting, back next week". I started to panic a little bit, as there were no other services within at least 40 miles or so. Then I noticed some movement inside the building. I knocked and they answered. They were just about to leave, but were nice enough to open a pump and fill my car's tank with unleaded. Had I been just a few minutes later I would have been stranded out of gas. Oh - and then as my car was getting refueled, it had just started pouring rain, and I noticed I had a flat tire... so had to change in the mud (at least I did have a spare tire with me).

    • @MatthewLowryUSA
      @MatthewLowryUSA 5 лет назад +14

      Yeah, been there and done that. I hate those situations. Google told me a gas station existed that had closed during the recession. Turns out my car can go on empty at 35mph for 50 miles. Now I'm to careful and am always stopping to fill my tank. Hmm, 3/4 tank? Better fill up just in case.

      But that wouldn't be as pathetically melodramatic as pretending there's no workaround like a bottle of octane boost, or conceding that they're too moronic to have planned for that possibility. When people talk shit about millennials I used to roll my eyes, but then I watch videos like this and am forced to concede that maybe most millennials are ridiculously soft.

      I think its not just that the cars "have" to run on the premium stuff. It could also be that both Ben's prefer premium over regular. Im Australian so ill explain from my point of view. I drive a Holden Calais, a luxury car built here in Australia. It uses an Aussie built version of the GM 3.6L V6 codenamed LY7 or nicknamed "Alloytec". These engines are rated at our lowest fuel octane which is ULP91 (87 Octane basically) and is important given the car was built to travel this vast, empty country where petrol stations (gas stations) on outback highways can be up to 150km (90miles) apart and will likely only offer diesel and ULP91 (87). I prefer to put in our mid grade premium petrol which is ULP95 (89-91) that cost about AUD $0.10-.$012c (not sure in USD; google doesn't help much either) more per litre (gallon) than regular ULP91 (87). While its not mandatory, It gives me piece of mind knowing that a better octane is running through my engine and it does make a noticeable difference in both performance and economy.

    So, the whole fuel issue is something I'm familiar with. As a motorcyclist, I've learned a bunch of little things that you can do in a low/no fuel situation. Always jeep a jug of octane booster in your vehicle (I know it isn't the greatest, but it works in a pinch). You guys had the right Idea with keeping jugs of gasoline in your car, but they should have been larger. The most important thing that wasn't done was planning. There are multiple apps that will locate gas pumps with 91 or higher octane fuels, and you could have plotted your course and figured out the distance from pump to pump before you left.

    Let me get this straight: in 10K+ miles you did less than 10 miles in Alaska? Did you at least visit Salmon Glacier? (past bear viewing area in Hyder, up the hill back into BC at Premier - 20+ miles of gravel)
    Three of us completed a 6K+ mile, 17 day motorcycle trip from Seattle - Alaska and back earlier this month. About 1K of this was gravel or dirt. We visited Hyder twice and had fuel range issues (at about 225 miles). Filling your bike from a Rotopax similar to your red can. My bike likes 91 octane but used whatever was there. It ran fine. 91 was available North of Meziadin Junction.
    Hyder area is beautiful but is not really Alaska. You owe it to yourselves and your audience to actually visit Alaska. BTW - Yukon and Northern BC rock also.

    You guys could have run on 87, your tuner should have input a low octane tune in your ECUs that reads knock and switches your ignition timing map to a safe advance table. You'd probably have a check engine light on, but as long as you avoided flooring it and racing, you would have been ok. Either way, you guys made it to Alaska!😆

    Tim Horton’s is absolutely HUGE in Canada. And strangely that one you visited looks exactly like ones here in New York. Inconceivable!

    Should have brought some octane booster to add to the regular fuel. Car should run on 87 even if it doesn't run well. All modern ECUs can adjust compression in order to avoid knocking which is the primary short term issue with putting 87 in.

      They can't adjust compression but timing.

      Sure, but they do it to adjust the compression ratio at time of ignition.

      @@michael2275 no, compression ratio is static (different in boosted cars). So to change the compression ratio you have to lower boost. To change the static ratio you have to buy the new infinity car with the weird crankshaft.

      It's actually much more simple...both of those cars would be fine with 87 octane as long as they stay out of boost. Which is simple, especially on those rough roads

    FYI dont call the Tim Hortons wedges and gravy a poutine lol. That is the absolute worst attempt at making a poutine. Coming from a true Canadian, Tim's just doesn't cut it anymore.
