I was recently diagnosed with stage 4 poorly differentiated esophageal cancer at age 77. I have been totally at peace with this as a Christian. I looking forward to being with my Lord for eternity. Nevertheless my chemo is radically effective and I am in remission. So unconsciously I was looking ath through J Warner Wallace’s lens.
I have also done a thought experiment. What if every human being, by God’s edict, were allowed to live exactly 100 years, disease free? How many people would be indifferent to God. How many would say I will wait until the stroke of midnight in the last minute of year 99 to deal with sin and mortality. Not many apart from those destined by God for eternal life and even among those, how many of us would abide in him. Death reminds us that each of us is running on an unknowable clock. It can be an alarm clock or stimulus to use our time well.

What an interesting take. My career was cut short because of RA among other things. I've been in pain for 15 years. I know it's only a small amount of my eternal life. Doesn't mean I don't have bad days, but I'm at peace with my disease. I treat it with my physicians, but it shows God's strength in my weaknesses.

May the Lord help each believer to remember the stark contrast of suffering in this life compared to the eternal gift and blessings obtained in heaven. New bodies, fellowship with ALL who have and will become believers as well as the full Godhead and angels, a personal mansion for each person, crowns to reward Jesus as savior. These will last forever.

This viewpoint also allows us to go thru anything with endurance as Paul told us to pray for... there will be an end to it

Great reminder on how empathy and courage manifest themselves in those situations. Gotta show the low points of humanity so that you something upward to move towards.

When would we exercise our faith in God if there was no suffering ? When would we experience the joy of knowing God loved us and is comforting us as we go through suffering? No suffering then no joy, no peace , no hope, no faith, no love. Just nothing. “ These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33.

I understand the description of God allowing pain to grow in character & the hope of eternal life. But boy oh boy when a body has physical pain continuously 40 yrs … it’s definitely character building & sometimes long for release (even when I know its a dot of the eternal) 🇨🇦 ❤

Brings this passage to mind, which my 90 year-old mother (who is dealing with the after effects of a stroke) quotes regularly: _"For our momentary, light affliction is working out for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal."_ 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (LSB)

A foundational view based on eternity and not a finite life is incredibly important. He views us as eternal beings. Thank you.

Having an eternal perspective and a long historical understanding affects how we look at things which fits in with a biblical world view.

If the purpose of God is to create co-heirs with Christ, this will involve some overcoming of evil through suffering. At the very least, this will give us intimate knowledge of good and evil.

If people want to know about God- how He is and why He does and doesn't do things, they can read His Word. On God's prevention of evil, read the book of Job. It's not complicated, but people don't want to know- they want to dismiss. If a fifty- year-old man steals something, nobody asks, "Why don't his parents prevent this?". And the world is a lot older than fifty.

She only looked at it when asking her question. It IS an interview. Once she asks it she puts her phone down and listens attentively. So I don’t think it’s disrespectful at all.

Look, I can explain this. A suffering world was not the original blue-print. So I disagree that the problem of evil stems from "they have to learn to be better people through suffering." If you believe that, why not just become a Buddhist or a Hindu? We do not "develop character" by suffering. Remember, Jesus has given us His Nature and His Life. He does not need to "develop" us through suffering. We simply accept Him and what He accomplished for us. No one has or ever will suffer as He did. He already suffered on our behalf. I was abused severely in early childhood. That was not due to God wanting to "teach me a lesson." I did not and cannot soon forget it. Hardly a "blip on the radar." PTSD effects you for the rest of your life. During that time, I was continuously reached by angels and saints and the Holy Spirit. Did I suffer in the abuse? Yes. But there was always a place for me to go as a Believer. That place I will return to when my physical life ceases. I was well-aware of eternity because I faced it day after day. But I always had heavenly back up. Go look at the movie clip of Ben-Hur meeting Jesus. As he keeps his eyes on Jesus, Ben barely notices that he is still being whipped. That is the way it is.

Some translations of scripture say that God is the author of evil.

The book of Job does say something like this. He did put the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. He knew we would choose it because he knew we needed the lessons of suffering, pain, and adversity.

Wrong! The Hebrew word, "raah," means not only evil but also calamity or even mischief. God brings necessary calamity to relationships (Matthew 10:34-36) in order to draw us closer to Himself.

God doesn't prevent evil because God has predestined that evil to happen so that He may display His wrath, justice, mercy, and glory.

I REALLY DONT LIKE THAT WORD "PREDEDTINED". ITS AN OVER USED PRESBYTERIAN WORD. I USE TO DEBATE MY TEACHERS AT MY CHRISTIAN PRESB HIGHSCHOOL ABOUT PREDESTINATION.
YES, GOD KNEW ABOUT ALL THIS A HEAD OF TIME, BUT DID NOT CAUSE OR.CREATE IT. FURTHERMORE, GOD.DOESNT CHOOSE WHO GETS SAVED AND WHO DOESNT. FREE WILL.
