As a retired cabinetmaker, I would suggest that you always start at the top using a stop block, of some sort, on both sides of the drill bits. Eyeballing center points, even with brad point bits, can be problematic if off even a small amount when putting in the shelf pins and possible having a wobbly shelf. Using the top, with a consistent starting point, saves time ( no eyeballing) and provides more accuracy. The center point will remain the same, you just change youre starting location. I see on this machine the flip stops won't be of any help in this scenario, but you are way smart enough to come up with a work around. As always, love your videos.

This is exactly why I ALWAYS use a drill guide, such as the Kreg, or an automated boring system, such as the Festool rail and router setup. If in the cabinet business, I’d have a gang boring machine. Bits won’t wander hither and yon when using those systems…

I enjoy using my Festool LR 32-SYS Hole Drilling Set, the Festool Router OF 1400, and Guide Rail FS FS 1400/2-LR 32, the router bit makes a very clean shelf pin hole and can drill the door hinge hole. Ron Paulk has a great video show a technique for very quick setup too.

6:17 one of the things I’ve picked up from using the LR32 system from festool is to size my cabs in a manner that makes it evenly divisible by 32.
That way I can flip my track system without needing to specifically index to top or bottom and will always get the same pin outs.

Ive had one of those machines for going on 20yrs. Only changed the bits once. Also if you get creative you can match the holes to the door boring pattern and then when installing doors you can use 5mm euro screws for the hinge plates. Makes that operation a no brainer.

I see ppl still insist on those things? I hv done a load of them & several times going back to build for a consistent customer I ask “ u ever in your life time adjust a shelf or know of someone who has? “NO”!
Has always been the answer ! So I tell my customer that because I am the designer 99% of the time right down to hand drawing off my IPad ( I hate sketch up) . And as of lately after I tell them everyone of them scratched the idea for thicker stronger shelf’s? As somewhat of a trade off money wise although they end up spending more on my shelf’s ( I use 1/2” to 1” stickers between two 3/4 “ strong Cabinet grade ply with nice trimmed sides!
Spencer you amaze me on some of the huge stuff you build and transport alone! The stairs you drug around I show carpenters all the time when I hear “that winey train coming “!
Then I say “ boys you don’t see any democrats there do you”!
Thank you again very very much Spence I know these videos take a lot of time and moo-la !

As my book collection grows I've regrouped many times, requiring adjusting shelves to accommodate taller books or shifting short books. One client hired me to build kitchen cabinets but changed her mind and had her brother build them...next time I arrived for another job she showed me how the shelves were fixed and she was unable to store her breakfast cereals anywhere except in the base cabs. I modified my current pantry cabs to be adjustable and am able to store supplies more densely. A compromise to the bad look of tons of unused holes is to only have 3 holes at each shelf position, allowing some adjustment.

But Ron Paulk said recently that he feels we shouldn't concern ourselves about where to stop and restart holes, and I agree. I don't think the holes look ugly. I think hardwear looks ugly. That's just my opinion.

That was a very good vid Spencer. I've had the same line borer as yours for twenty years. Paid for itself very quickly(I changed those super stiff indexing pin springs.) Before the machine, I made a bookcase line boring jig. I bought a 1" x 1" x 96" length of typical mild steel. I manually laid out the 1 1/4" spacing and drilled/countersunk it on my drill press. That tool made me a ridiculous amount of money. It was good and heavy so it wouldn't move around when hand drilling. Speed wise its not much slower than a machine. Super accurate because you never index. I did that one for 1/4" holes. The high speed brad points always stayed sharp a surprisingly long time.
