I am from the USA, I just found your channel. I am not a true beginner but maybe someone that needed to hear this video of yours. I just wanted to thank you for uploading it, it really did give me what I needed and that was motivation. I have caught myself at a crossroads and needing to focus. I'm 50, just had a turn of health issues that's going to make me have to look at all this in a whole different way. Your video really did help me with all of that. Now, I just have to find what it is I need to build and focus and build from there. Thanks again for the upload! :)

Hey! Thanks for the comment, and Im glad the video helped!
Life can be a funny one sometimes, it can create changes where we thought we didnt need any and force us to change our perspective on things, which isnt necessarily a bad thing but it can be a pain to begin with.
Have a great day and thanks again for taking the time to comment, means a lot!

I have been watching RUclips videos of woodworkers for a good few years now and always dreamed of being in my little workshop and my own boss. Took three years but I have built my workshop and I am ready to go but I am procrastinating untold especially with family and full time job but this video has really helped thank you.

Not sure if you have seen them but aldi is selling a set of quick grip bar clamps for 5.99 for a set of 4, 2 very small and 2 medium around 18". They are quite sturdy only down fall of them is the cover on the jaws aren't great a bit to slippy for my liking, but we'll worth the money.

I think Facebook is the best. I mean ebay or Etsy are good as well but I've seen the same item for 5 time less money and the pp buying don't know the difference between a mahogany, oak and pine. Same with the sanding to a very smooth finish. But with the stains they make them look ok, not to mention the screws, bolts, rope etc that is being used on the item. But pp just look at the price, they don't know that there's a difference between 1-2 years and a lifetime. I've just looked at some of these sites and it made me sad and pissed at the same time.

Yeah I would have to agree. I think FB works well because people can have a conversation with you, allowing you to sell them the product. That being said, I've had quote requests in this week for the gates I build and everyone has found someone cheaper at a REDICULOUS price...clearly, the client won't be getting the same quality at £500 less than what everyone sells them for but they do not realise that. I have had a lot of jobs where they have been ripped off for £1000s and then they have to pay out for us to come and make it again, its terrible to see and winds me right up!

Great video. I’m at a stage where I can earn good money and thinking about expanding the side hustle next year. It’s just completely nerve wrecking. As work is never guaranteed. But I also feel like I can’t take on any more work while doing my full time job. I’m having to leave products out of stock to play catch up. But then some months can be quiet. Now I’m rambling haha and I have completely lost the point I was getting too lmao. Anyway thanks again for this video

Thanks Mark! I'm going to make a video on the ups and downs of being self-employed so keep your eyes out for that. I'll be honest, it's probably the hardest, and best thing, I've ever done bar being a Father and in the Military. I fell your pain, we were at that point a few years ago. A few things to bear in mind if you are thinking of going ahead with it, make sure you have the right mindset, and understand the sacrifices, the work and the effort that will be required. Its not for everyone BUT just like the Military and Parenthood, if you can deal with those issues and come out the other side, you will be a better person for it and it will be the best (usually) decision you could make!

Thank you for the reply. I will definitely keep a look out for that video. Did you go full time from your garage? I have a detached single garage that’s quite spacious and that’s where my workshop is. I feel like I’m already working a ton of hours I start at 6am finish at 2pm then I’m in the workshop till 6/7pm. I think for me it’s that financial worry. I would absolutely love to be my own boss and give it my best shot. I do feel I would need to prepare more in terms of knowledge of taxes and business planning. Like you say the woodwork is the easy part. It’s everything else haha.

Morning, we worked from our garage for 18 months or so. Moved up to a 750sqft shop for around 12 months and then I went full time in the business. After about 18 months we upgraded to a 2500sgft shop....just in time for COVID to kill the business lol. Before I went full time I would work 0800 - 1630 and then 1630 - 2100 plus Sat and Sunday. It was hard, but worth it. It helps to have money in the bank to cover the bills, "they" say around 6 months worth, minimum of 3. When I left my job we had 1 lol, things had deteriorated in my Mon - Fri to the point where a decision had to be made so I took it and here we are. Is it possible to reduce your hours at work? That's always a good option if you can. To be fair, you feel like you're working a lot of hours because you are lol. I always get caught up in the work and forget how much time I spend here. I will moan to the Mrs that I feel terrible and she's says "Well yeah you idiot, you've not had a day off for 6 weeks....😂" Its worth it if you can handle it, for sure. Feel free to ask any questions 👍

I really do appreciate the insights. I always say I’m going to give myself this weekend off. Then it’s il just pop in and do some odd jobs. Then it’s a full day in the shop 🤣🤣. It’s like constantly chasing your tail but I suppose that’s the job haha. If you don’t mind when did you go from side hustle to setting up the actual registered business. I have been hearing HMRC are cracking down on side hustle’s from 2024 with some new crap they are planning. It’s another thing for me to think about… do I go legit while still in full time employment or do it as I take that leap. Yeah as much as I’d like to have a big safety net to cover bills for as long as possible it will probably on work out to a few months.

Ha, yeah, I'm the same! It can feel like that for sure, I guess that's the game, getting yourself to the point where you are not lol. Its been a while since we went full time, 2017/2018 I think. I would definitely look at going self employed while you work and get it done properly, at the very least it helps to make sure that you know its a viable option. Definitely get as much in the bank as you possibly can, remember, every penny invested in the business and yourself is a penny invested in the future!
