Amazing video! My 13yo is totally obsessed by this -- enough so that he's dragged me down the hole. I ended up writing a program to calculate the squareness of countries, and according to my metric Egypt is indeed the winner at 89.5% square, followed by (North) Sudan and Cote D'Ivoire both at just over 83%. Interestingly (to me at least), these seem to be the only countries that score higher than a circle, which scores exactly 2*sqrt(2)-2, or roughly 0.828, on my metric. So rejecting countries for being "too round" may not be valid, at least not if you're interested in finding square-ish countries beyond the top 3.

I know Libya was colonised by Italy, and they share a border with Egypt so it's probably something to do with them.

map men being translated as "男性の地図” (dansei no chizu) in japanese is so funny to me, it's literally "men's map" or "a man's map". took me a while to realise it was supposed to be map men lol. a more accurate way to say it would be 地図の男性 (chizu no dansei), lit. "map's men" the whole thing translates as "dear volunteer, can you translate this sentence? thank you! men's map" EDIT: i just put into google translate basically what i wrote above except with "thanks a lot" and "map men" and it came out with the exact phrasing in the video which honestly makes the whole thing even funnier
Oh yeah, I remember that the "no" possessive being the other way around from the Indo-European languages I was used to was really confusing to me when I was learning a bit of Japanese! I guess they fell into the same trap.
Came here to post the translation, the "dear" here is dear as in "deep affection", notably not a letter opening(which would be more like "ボランティアへ" (To volunteer,). 男性の地図(dansei no chizu) could also be translated as "map of men", as in a map showing where men are; 地図の男性 (chizu no dansei) is still more correct with this interpretation, meaning men of map, or men of the map(s)

It's the first place I thought of, I sent to long looking at maps of this wonderful place back in the 1990s whilst on holiday there, the Cairo museum is fantastic and the people were very friendly.

The fancy term cartographers use is "salient".
map men being translated as "男性の地図” (dansei no chizu) in japanese is so funny to me, it's literally "men's map" or "a man's map". took me a while to realise it was supposed to be map men lol. a more accurate way to say it would be 地図の男性 (chizu no dansei), lit. "map's men"

Came here to post the translation, the "dear" here is dear as in "deep affection", notably not a letter opening(which would be more like "ボランティアへ" (To volunteer,).
男性の地図(dansei no chizu) could also be translated as "map of men", as in a map showing where men are; 地図の男性 (chizu no dansei) is still more correct with this interpretation, meaning men of map, or men of the map(s)

We dedicated most of 6th grade geography to India. Our headmaster was an immigrant from Karnataka and did a wonderful job teaching it. I remember he asked us on exam to draw the map of India. One of the not-so-bright kids drew a rectangle, to which the headmaster quipped: "looks more like Indiana to me". States don't count.

SOUTH AFRICA'S TOO WOBBLY, BULGARIA'S TOO NOBLY.

Now the only countries left are ones whose squareness are the best.
If you know which ones are coming we're incredibly impressed.
Little Montenegro's square if you rotate it some degrees.
South Sudan has left behind a very square North Sudanese.
The angles in Angola mean it's nearly good to go.
And Nigeria comes close, although it bulges down below.
Libya is nearly a square, it's more a parallelogram.
And Cote d'Ivoire and Suriname do well in our exam.
Equatorial Guinea's very square, but unfortunately.
Since its capital's on an island, then the squarest it can't be.
