    So worth noting: during the time I had allocated to write and record the script, I was very ill and messed up between using colossus (single) and colossi (plural) on a few occasions during the video. So....yeah, my bad. 😅

    I love the way that Agro controls because it feels like you’re actually commanding another living being who then has to respond; he’s not just a tool, he’s an animal and a friend

    • @MamaTrixxieAsmr
      @MamaTrixxieAsmr Месяц назад +30

      True but doesn’t mean dirge isn’t a pain
      It’s quite awkward to control both agro and wander simultaneously

    • @viljamtheninja
      @viljamtheninja Месяц назад +26

      As someone who has done a bit of real life horse riding, it is nowhere near as frustrating as trying to control Agro. I think it's cool in concept but just ends up interrupting the game feel and bringing me out of the atmosphere. Same with The Last Guardian only much worse.

    • @JKLeeds
      @JKLeeds  Месяц назад +46

      Yeah I really admire the ambition of it but I've played A LOT of games with horses, everything from the Zeldas, Witcher 3, RDR2 and a bunch of others and I've never had anywhere near the level of difficulty of trying to control Agro.
      Also, if realism is what they're going for, why can Wanda fall 60 feet off a Colossus and only lose about 1/4 of his health?

    • @VeryPeeved
      @VeryPeeved Месяц назад +7

      The trouble with realism is that you lack a lot of the advantages you'd have in the real world, due to only vaguely controlling a person and lacking half of his senses, among other things. So realism in methods and obstacles can lead to unrealism in results, not to mention frustration.

    • @Izutheperson
      @Izutheperson Месяц назад +3

      @@JKLeedsit's understandable. those games are more akin to piloting an automobile the an actual mount that is an autonomous living being.
      Transportation is more shallow in those games it's a means to an end rather than an interesting and integral part of the game's mechanics; a skill that is rewarding and satisfying to gain mastery of.
      Agro may well be the best mount or rather the best form of transportation conceived in the artistic medium that is video games.

      came back to the actual game like half a decade later and killed the first few colossi, felt bad and put the game down. still haven't beaten it.

    This was the game as a kid that made me believe that games can be so much more than just pieces of entertainment, Shadow of the Colossus is easily one of my all time favourite games because it made me feel alone, awful for the things I was doing and then ultimately kick me in the heart when I least expected it, it's beautiful, tragic, lonely and riveting all the while.
    In my well over 25 years of playing games, this is the king of them all and will always live in my heart as the best game ever created.

    I love the horse controls because they are realistic: you don't control "Agro" wich is the horse, you control Wander and Wander only wich means Agro is to be controlled like you'd control an actual horse (more or less) Agro herself doesn't want to go in certain places or do certain things because they could be dangerous for her (The horse AI is rather good in this department in my opinion also considering it was originally a ps2 game) so yeah even though they are a bit hard the horse controls are one of my favourite things about this marvelous game.
    Amazing challenge as always.

    • @JKLeeds
      @JKLeeds  Месяц назад +6

      Yeah I get what they were going for and I admire the ambition but I feel like it's a level of realism which doesn't really add anything to the gameplay apart from frustration, at least for me.

The way you amalgamate your puns like the perfect puzzle pieces they are seamlessly and intricately with the precision of a Japanese horse surgeon is nothing short of an immaculate nightmare. You should use your puns for evil sometime and create disses for the bosses and npcs you really dislike in future games. Telling someone they look like a smashed pumpkin goes a long way

    I was a little nervous about this one... because I haven't played it yet and wasn't sure if it would spoil too much of the puzzles 😅 (I knew the plot spoilers already). You did a great job explaining the difficulties of the challenge in a way approachable to an outsider without it also feeling like a walkthrough, this left me more excited to play the game rather than less!
    Glad you were able to recover some of the magic of that fur-st playthrough, and I look forward to seeing you branch out to whatever strikes your fancy in the future. Runs like these are a great way to experience a wider breadth of gaming in a much deeper way than just watching casual playthroughs.
    That said, I understand that Dark Souls is your core audience and shouldn't be neglected. Do you think it's possible to beat Bloodborne when every boss must die to a visceral attack, and ideally your only damage is viscerals + setting up for viscerals? I've been having a blast avoiding R1 and it really changes how you tackle bosses, so I'd love to see how far it could be taken. Plus, those animations are all so *viscerally* satisfying.

    Great video! Just a little nitpick: "colossi" is the plural of "colossus" (like campus and campi, cactus and cacti) and many times you used colossi when refering to a single colossus. It's just a nitpick but I thought you might like that clarified

    the reason barbas doesnt crush you is because he cant, the colossi are mainly living structures/statues, its reasonable to assume that barbas doenst have the flexibility to do any more than grip his club

    No idea if this is a thing in the PS3/4 remakes of the game but at least in the PS2 version it has some REALLY janky physics when you combine thrashing movements of the colossi and jumping. Like so janky you can throw yourself to the very top of some of the colossi for some.

      @@JKLeeds Then it might be possible to launch yourself combined with the swords movement going up to throw yourself onto the shoulder of Knight/Gaius. Done it a few times but it is EXTREAMLY hard.

    I thought you were going to do chad speedrun strats on the giant club arm guy. Stand on his club and when he pulls it back you jump and hope it catapults you, can get some serious air.

    Honestly I had done the second colossus accidentally by jumping up the back end of them with the horse and I had wondered why was this the hardest out of them all to climb up

    technically you don't even have to grip for most weak points as there is a plunging attack and it deals as much as a fully charged stab

    One could argue that jump-stabbing wouldn't amount to climbing on the fur, sadly though this won't work either way because of some sideways weak spots

    You dont have to grip fur to stab your sword on most weak points. Jumping and pressing attack does a plunging stab that is equivalent to a full charge normal stab. This does not work on weak points that are on vertical surfaces, however.

    • @JKLeeds

      I believe the animation for the stab is the same as a normal stab, so he is considered "grabbing" until he pulls the sword out. I never really used it much for fear of accidently jumping off lol

    Man that was very interesting. Speaks to how well the design is, that you can do something clearly not intended with the mechanics. Now the real test is No Fur No Lizards :p
