PSA for new fans: it has become commonplace for fans to bully the queens online if they do something on tv fans don’t like. Don’t @ the queens to tell them how awful they are. Just enjoy the entertainment.

    • @JonMagnusBeck

Also, don’t bully them in general. Ultimately the queens are here to make TV, so don’t hate on them for giving the drama

@@TyroldisRephrase that, I may not like some of the queens but I don't hate any of them I follow all of them I don't give hate. I may not like what some of them do, but I still follow them in a supportive way. So you may not like what a queens does, but you can still follow them as long as you aren't being hateful.

I honestly can’t imagine being a new drag race fan. There are so many franchises and seasons airing, (in 2023 there were like 14), not to mention there are so many seasons to catch up on. Also so many scandals which happened over the years.
Drag Race has grown a lot over the years, and I am proud of that.

I think especially if you're from outside the US, there's a better chance of getting into it by following your own country's version, it might serve as an easy entry point, but you'd still have to check some of the US seasons at some point

I just watched every US season for the first time in a months time. It was a WHIRLWIND. Seeing the show change in a binge was so neat because I noticed them all like instantly and it was obviously less gradual. Seasons 3-9 were so fantastic and the first 3 seasons of all stars. I can’t speak as highly for the rest or the seasons; something was always just a little bit off.

I often point people to season 7 as their first season. Many people have already heard of Trixie and Katya, it's the first season where the fashion was really stepped up across the board, and the drama is easy to follow (old school vs new school). It was underrated when it came out but its really aged well.

As a cis het woman, one of the biggest reasons I love the show is the sense of love and community. Sure there's drama sometimes, but as a person who is very lonely and still hasn't found my 'tribe' in life for many reasons, mental health mostly, this show is a source of joy and hope for me. The abundance of love and support people have for each other despite who they are and why they've been through keeps my little spark alive. The people in my life that I am/have been closest with and love the most have mostly been queer, theres something so magical about the queer community that I wish everyone could see and appreciate. The love is just better.

As a DR veteran STAN, I appreciate this guide for the newbies! My coworker started watching drag race and it took so much effort not to spoil 😂.
Btw I ✨️respectfully✨️ disagree with one aspect - IMO it is best to start with Season 1 and go in order. I know S1 is rough but you have to know your roots😂❤ plus S1 has that old school drama!
Plus everything builds with each season. I know we are 16 years in but honestly, it is worth it to binge. If you're a beginner, I recommend watching season 16 in real time, then when the winner is crowned in a few months, start at S1

Watching this, as an old fan, gives me another vision of the show as it is: a reality show like no other. It also helps me remember when I first started watching it. I started with seasons 6 and 5 because of Adore and Alaska respectively, and then AS2. At first I was more into the lipsync battles, but the show as a whole is pure gold, and I totally agree with the order of the seasons you mentioned (5, 6, 8, 12 and 15) since they're my favorite seasons as well as 3, 4 and as2, 4 and 6.

You could do a primer on all the other great Drag Race content creators: IMHO, Bussy, Wilma Fingerdoo, Green Gay, etc. Each one of these shows, plus yours obv, have a unique take on Drag Race from the sarcasm and surrealism of IMHO to Bussy's breathy rating of each queen's runway look and performance in the main challenge. If you do, you're most welcome to use my words here to describe IMHO, Darby is constantly sarcastic and when both of them go into simultaneous rant mode not listening to one another it's like a comedic fever dream.

  • @19nmiller1
    @19nmiller1 6 месяцев назад +9

I think one of the most magical things about the show is that it's so accessible to every level of fan. You can be a beginner who knows nothing about drag and still be super entertained, or you could also be a drag historian dedicating your entire life to the field and still find new stuff to enjoy. You can follow the queens as closely or as distantly as you want, watch once a year with the main season or all year with the spinoffs, know all the tricks of production and scrutinize everything or just let the magic of television envelop you and not even realize theres a team behind the scenes pulling all the strings. You can also love bits and pieces more than others but find yourself appreciating other things. I came in loving musical theater and knowing nothing about fashion, so I looked forward to the rusicals and girl groups more than anything. Now, Ive learned so much about fashion and its history and what goes into making a look, so now the runways and ball challenges are the highlights for me. I've been watching since season 9 and still find new things to appreciate, new fans to connect with, new podcasts to listen to, all that.

i have watched rdr, drag u, untucked and all-stars since s1 ep 1 for each respective series. among numerous suggestions for a new viewer would be to watch the paris is burning documentary. the legacy season drag race contestants stated in interviews that this was a requirement. much of the unique lingo that is used on drag race originated from paris is burning.
it is perhaps best for a new viewer to watch each season in chronological order. it truly provides homage to the his/herstory of the show as well as how it evolved over the many years that it continues to grace our screen.
(spoiler) this also provides an effective reference point when previous contestants return to the race as well as those who have changed their drag names over the years.
from its most humble beginnings to its international presence, it has been an absolute joy to witness a mere seed grow into a massive tree.
    long live drag race!

I can't really agree that season 5 is a good beginner season because Alaska's narrative hinges so much on knowing Sharon's from season 4, and the season itself feels very much like a direct sequel to season 4 because of it.
Season 4 however is a great first season imo, so much of modern Drag Race is rooted here and Willam's entire existence + Jaremi make it just a fun time with some of the best Untucked in the entire franchise. It was my first season and I was hooked on Drag Race basically from the jump because of it.
In general I think it's good to introduce people to the show with old school seasons, due to the heightened runway expectations post season 7 I think it'd be easier to new viewers to see some of the crunchier fashion first and then see the shows evolution in runway packages to heighten the experience.

With the earlier seasons I feel that Untucked is very important. Some context is lost without watching them and you get some of the most golden moments especially Untucked for season 5 and 6. Heck I would say one of the most important Untucked seasons is season 7 because so much of the winner's character development is sorely in that rather than the main show.

I think one thing that was missed is how lipsyncs are very influential. There are double Shantays when the lipsync is so good that both queens stay. And a double sashay is the opposite. Usually one double shantay per season and double sashays are extremely rare. Lipsyncs tend to be talked about a lot and are remembered the most about a season.

If you are a fan of Star Wars then you have heard of the Machette Order of watching the movies. I have created a machette order for Drag Race. Start with 5, 6, and 7. Then circle back to the beginning. 1 can be skipped if necessary but it is still a good time. Then you need 2, 3, 4, all stars 1, and all stars 2. Starting with 5 through 7 before going back means you can start on a strong note but still know who the queens are before AS2 which is amazing. After that you just follow the order and make room for UK if you can because it is the best international and then you know who The Vivian is when it comes to the winners season

I've also recently switched from telling new viewers to start with season 5 to season 14. At this point, season 5 feels dated (lower budget, using the word "fish" all the time, the intense editing, etc.). Season 5 is obviously better than season 14--who could deny those queens, the lipsyncs, and the story arcs--but season 14 feels like the best representation of the modern show we currently have.

I've been watching drag race videos on RUclips since maybe 2017 but the first time I watched an actual season was 2023 so it feels really weird being a new fan but still knowing like every winner etc

This has nothing to do with the video, but New Viewers: If you want to follow a drag race yt channel that radiates positivity, this is the one. Jack always finds a way to have positives along with any criticism. He has sunshine aura and a calming voice. This channel is one in a million and genuinely enjoyable to follow.

In addition to all that Jack explained in the video!
If you are a beginner to watching drag race and want to better appreciate or pay attention to the times and evolution of the show and mainstreaming drag/queer culture into pop culture, you can start from season 1,2,3,4, AS1, S5,6,7, AS2, S8,9,AS3 and work your way up in the chronological manner the seasons were produced. There's a build that makes it easier to understand the later seasons, see how production shakes things up, try new things, develop storylines etc in addition to all the puns, call back, references towards past seasons throughout newer seasons and episodes. The experience is unmatched!

I've been watching between US Season 5 AND 6 (when I was like 6-7) ANDDDDDD.. WELL damn....I never expected that some of my friends would watch Drag Race with me.
Also- A tip for those are new to watching. JUST AVOID PURGE WATCHING THE WHOLE THING! I learned the hard way that IF you purge watch, there's always a time that you'll even ask anyone what happened after that season or episode.

This is something random but I actually don’t recommend starting with the best seasons of drag race because when you done from them and the other seasons just aren’t as interesting, I started with 14 and it has a great cast and keeps interest the whole entire time

i started during late covid around or just after season 13 i did 1-13 then allstars (should have looked up the relece dates for allstars)
WATCH SEASON 1, if nothing else for bebe, nina and onjina, and with how self-refferencial the show is i dont think its all the wise to start from like season 5 or 6 even if they are considerd to be the best

7:38 actually for the real Match Game the celebrities are the panelists and the two other people are the contestants trying to match their answers to the panel. Drag Race does it in reverse.

Nah, start at season 3 and work your way up. That’s the best way to do it. I’ve been watching since season 4 and I think you should just work your way up. But what do I know, I never convinced one person to watch the show besides the women I was dating before I got married, then forced my wife to watch. I’m straight, so a lot of my friends aren’t interested. 😂😂 but now my wife will randomly surprise me with tickets to drag shows because I got her into it. So at least I converted one person. lol

I don't think it's fair for the earlier queen for people to say to start with later seasons when you should start from season 1️⃣ and make your way to the most recent season.

I understand, but it's like saying you should start watching All Stars with AS1... It's hard to get through and may be bad for your watching experience. It's easier to make someone fall in love with something like seasons 5 and 6. Also, if they like it, they would probably go back to watch earlier seasons. That's what happened with me and most of the friends I have who also watch the show.

I'm mean don't get me wrong. I started later down the line because I was NOT a fan. Like I started watching season nine because Lady Gaga was going to be in the first episode then I like the whole season and then started watching from there but now that I saw all of them I think it's right to start from one, but everybody's gonna watch however, they feel like right.
