Multi Engine Swap Porsche 930 Turbo

  • These swaps are getting out of hand...and really really fast. But what are the implications of taking something sacred (like a Turbo Air cooled Porsche) and replacing the entirety of its drivetrain with modern, high tech components? Is this the path forward or should the EV's and classic combustion engine cars stay separated like church and state?
    Steve Bender, the man behind this car you see here, has been refining this swap for a few months now with the help of Tremec electric. What they've produced is pretty wild, quite nice, and really really quick.

    I think there is a time and a place for EV swaps. 930 turbo, not really for me (sorry steve but let me try it out), but I wouldn't care if I had a 60s caddy, a FJ60 or etc with an EV powerplant.

    I think ev swaps make sense in classic cars when the powertrain isn’t a huge part of the experience, like a 60’s Cadillac. In something like this I don’t really see the point, it might be faster than stock, but it’s still not modern car fast

    I like EV swaps but don't think every car should be an EV. It is all about what you are looking for because the instant torque feels amazing but high revving or ground pounding ICE motors also feel great. Also, how well it is implemented. Something like this is awesome, especially since they have kept the weight down. All the new cars are just so damn heavy.

  • @stevenbarnett4972
    @stevenbarnett4972 2 месяца назад

    To be fair I can see this being a really good way to bring EV market up in a much more cost effective way, it’s will also allow for more classic cars to be revived so car enthusiasts like us can still enjoy the good stuff about cars and driving
    but to make it more accessible to the general public it would be a even cooler if there was a way to make an electric motor marry up to any gearbox - remove the fuel cell and replace it with a battery which could lead to a 50/50 weight distribution and much more (I’m abridging this massively but you get the picture😅)

    I think the EV swapped Porsche is cool. For me there is the visual aspect. I was a kid when these cars were new. I love the whale tale on these cars. There's the performance aspect. As we know, EV's can perform. There's the sound and smell which would be distinctly different from the original air cooled turbo. Porsche is known for building some incredible engines, no doubt, but it's okay to be different. I love it for what it is. At the end of the day, it's a beautiful car that's still on the road. It's an enthusiast car, and that's cool with me.

    On one hand, I actually think this is cooler than a factory made EV as far as aesthetics go. The engineering is also frankly better than where the OEMs seem to be going. On the other hand, syntho-fuel swaps that maintain the original drivetrain but can match the EV in emissions sound waaayy cooler than a straight EV swap. Either way I, like Zach, don't really see EV ownership as a short term possibility even though I tend to be pro-environment. I'm in my late 20's/early 30's and I won't even consider it until I'm my dad's age (early 60's). Hot take: EV conversions like this Porsche should be more of a priority than fancy new models and maybe OEMs should start making EVs for Post-Millenial generations and beyond.

    I think these EV swaps have their place but the conditions need to be right. For instance you barn find an old one off or low production car. Body is mint but drivetrain is deteriorated beyond repair and no replacement components. Perfect candidate to EV swap. Now let say you come across a running and driving special edition (Shelby, AC Schnitzel, AMG, etc) whatever car that's rough but complete. That's either a full blown showroom restoration or leave as is until the wheels fall off. Also like here in commifornia with all the emissions bull crap find your dream '80s-'90s car an EV swap it. More performance and no more legal issues. Does suck that you won't enjoy that roar of ICE V8 or turbo 6 but you can enjoy driving HOV lanes by yourself.

    I do think that they are more important that we give them credit. All of us here love (hate) working on cars. It's important that this mentality of just making things your own lives on through the EV transition. It will be hella boring if cars are like iphones where you just buy it and it's what you get, there are parts available or even any way to mess with the insides of it. I hope that you can buy an EV drive train the same way you can buy a crate engine.

    Heart says: Wtf have you done?! You ripped the heart and soul out of this magnificent automobile. Brain says: it's faster than original and modernized so that's cool and this is the inevitable future so I'm glad the car has potentially a much longer life now. Still, good ol' internal combustion engine aaaalll the way.

    It's such a weird stance to be like "you're either for it or against it" lol BOTH! We make LS Sand rails at our shop along with rock crawlers and banshees, but our new favorite toy is a 65 mph EBike! I love going fast, and I love toys! This thing is fucing rad

    To paraphrase Top Gear, if Suppy says it's cool, instantly not cool

    As a dude who will also always prefer internal combustion, when it comes to stuff like this I always question: how rare is the car and what state was it in when it started. Any time a car can get a second lease on life I'm all for it regardless of how it happens, and regular Porsche's are a dime a dozen. Still, if the 930 was in running and driving shape before the conversion I feel like someone out there missed out on finding a sick project for sale so hopefully the engine was seized or something. In terms of EV versus combustion though... there's a reason all the million dollar hypercars aren't chasing performance anymore, and if recharging is easy for you EVs make amazing high-performance daily drivers.
    Clean build though, can't really hate and just hope it was a car that needed that amount of work to begin with.
