This demo is still one of the most magical experiences I've ever had. I don't like playing the victim, but I was having it rough in high school back then, my life was at its aimlessness peak, and the only things I was truly interested in were music and videogames, and I particularly gravitated towards Japanese works in those fields. I was already interested in playing Final Fantasy, as I wanted to explore more JRPGs thanks to the Persona games a friend recommended to me. It helped that Final Fantasy, aside from being a pillar of the genre, looked like they were really charming and interesting games. It just so happened that I loved the Kingdom Hearts soundtracks, and when I found out the same composer was working on this game I looked up if I could step into the series with no prior experience, other than having played some 10 minutes of VII. The Platinum Demo comes out and I rush to the store to hear Shimomura's new music. I didn't actually play the demo as soon as I downloaded it though, I played it on a Saturday evening a couple of hours after chilling out with my family. The Forest section is to this day one of my most beloved, memorable experiences in a videogame. I remember the feeling of fulfilment that something so effectively captured and portrayed precisely what I needed to feel at that moment. It was pure, ethereal, unbridled magic. The rest of the demo was all somehow consistent with this, I would just hang around each area for entire hours just looking and absorbing it all, taking it in, feeling grateful that I was experiencing it. I realise saying all this about a demo of all things may seem odd, but I imagine at least some understand what I felt back then. I ended up being gifted FFXV on Christmas, and long story short, I spent around 80 hours playing that game. I didn't once see the credits, and I plan to start it over once I feel like I'm ready to play it again. Let's say the habits I developed on the demo carried over to the full game. I've played the demo around Christmas each year since, it just seems like an appropriate time to do so.
