I have a multimedia computer speaker with no DC power cord input and speaker input. I’m taking it apart and do the same experiment you’ve done 8 years ago, you saved my life. I’m glad I’m making my first mixtape on a disc.
Is it easy if I record music on a printed Lenticular animated gif image card? It’s probably hard because they print and laminated them in those special clear plastic sheets to make another image or give animation to life.
I've always wanted to cut records electrically rather than acoustically. I own the same "Gakken Gramophone" as you and it works well if you're screaming into the bloody horn but not else. So I decided to replace the metal diaphragm with a speaker so I could electrically amplified the signal going to the needle. I had limited success but I was hoping you could try something like that!
So i was thinking what if you took 2 turntables and locked them down tightly next to each other and made a link between the 2 arms (1 arm with the cutting device on it) maybe with string or something. In theory if you put a normal record on the other turntable and dropped the needle it would pull the cutter on the opposite turntable as the first turntable followed the grooves of the record creating the proper distance between grooves in the recording and probably alot less noise. Just a thought if you want to give it a go with a couple cheapo tables.
Kind of like how a key copier works? I think that's an interesting idea, but you'd have to have a good enough master :/ I think a lot of people want to make copies of music they only have digitally
This reminds me of my early record experiments. I did something almost exactly like this, and had the same problem with the needle not staying in the groove during playback. However I also rigged a synchronous motor from a microwave oven (I think it was) with a string to slowly pull the cutting speaker over the record.
Very nice presentation, and those little speakers are so adorable and nostalgic!! I have quite the collection of little speakers like that, having acquired my first little speaker back in 1998. I have attempted CD cutting, with limited success but getting a steady spiral without a mechanism led to not-so-good results.
Another good thing about the wire nut is it's the least mass object allowing more of the speakers strength to get to the end of the needle instead of waisting power moving a massive volume knob. To get a hole in plastic for the needle just heat it up really hot and it'll melt through with the added benefit of the molten plastic acting as glue
Nice!!! I tired using a razor pen as my needle and it totally worked! I used a scratch dvd case and that worked. But I can’t control how to move it slowly. Is it a good Idea to use one of those C clips?
What kind of amplifier did you use for the speaker. How many watts. I'm very interested in record cutting and have tried several different things including this and so far it hasn't worked but if I keep on fiddling with different ideas I can probably get something
That needle is flexing too much, I thing if you use a thicker needle like a nail with bigger speakers, then it should work. Question: will it record stereo?
Hello. Have you ever tried recording on hard rubber or hard paper? The reason why i ask is that i've decided to find an alternative to pvc for record pressing. Thanks in advance.
+CitizenofTatooine - I have not tried hard rubber or hard paper. a lot of requests for cardboard, but not sure how that would work unless you coated it with glue or some other plastic...and then it's not really cardboard any more!
How did you make the solo plate soft enough to record? Did you just cut the center out of a plate? Also how fast do you need to move the cutter toward the center to not record of the previous groove?
howdy fellow Lathe Troll!!! Mulchefye here....holy crap i never even thought of this! and since my cutting heads are burnt i think im gonna try this with my sapphire cutting needle and glue the thing to my Airliner!
Try angling it against the way the record is going. I believe (and I may be wrong) that it will reduce any human error and probably cut into it more. There will probably be a long string so get a bunch of it out of the way.
Andy Carrillo That would work for an Edison Diamond Disc-type recording with the needle moving up and down, but standard records are recorded with the needle moving side-to-side, which is why the needle must be parallel to the speaker.
I've tried to record onto the shiny side of a cd with a victrola before, I put the soundbox on and screamed into the horn while moving the needle, it didn't work.
this was a challenge.. I tried this with a speaker and a blade from a scalpel and an old one sided disco record just holding it with my hand. was able to record but not accurately . without a cross lath, at least a screw and bar system with all thread rod and bar from a computer printer would have been better. . but it was just for fun
What if you put aluminium foil around a blank cd to record music on it will it work will it still record music on the blank cd and if so will it keep the blank cd protected from the needle ??
this is now late 2020, with todays technology why cant anyone make a suitable quality record lathe. that you dont have to sale your car to get one, with high quality and function. the gakken is a toy and the phonocut is predicted to be around 3000.00 dollars by march 2021. both are two extremes moving in opposite directions. or does anyone have any details and plans for a record lathe that actually worked, with no theories. that we can build on our own as a hobby project.
Why does it need to be a battery powered amp, aren't all speakers driven by an analog source, which has to be dc? Couldn't I use my stereos amplifier? Shouldn't you use one of the two dollar ebay turntable needles to have the proper width groves? Epoxy the needle to an Allen wrench.
A long time ago I tried the exact same thing. I made another arm to cut the groove, but no sound was recorded. It might have been better to raise the output to the head speaker more. 昔、子供の時まったく同じようなことを試したました。記録用に手作りの別のアームを取り付けました。結果は全く音声は記録できませんでした。もっとヘッドスピーカーへの出力を高めたらよかったかもしれませんね・・
+Jake Aigner - mine has a coil of wire inside the cutting head that vibrates, very much like a speaker would. This video might help you: ruclips.net/video/s62GfJEr6PI/видео.html

Kids, you can use this technique to copy your dad's favorite vinyls. Make 2 of those things with needles and connect the wires from one to the other. Slide one of them on the record you want to copy and the other on blank vinyl. Thank me later.
it will wok if you stop moving the needle. it's making grooves in the plastic that's what all the noise comes from. playing music on the radio would of been a lot better "more signal"
look, first of all CAREFUL of that needle not that there expensive just hard to find, Too cut a Record you need to 1.START FROM THE MIDDLE then work your way out unless you want everthing to play backwards. 2. Your Record Must SPIN COUNTER CLOCKWISE to record audio 3. Are you absolutely bonkers? Basically everything you say in this comment is wrong. You don't lathe records backwards, unless you're actually making a record which is supposed to be backwards. The record has to spin in the same direction that you play it at. For goodness' sake...

I want to record acoustically, acoustic sounds better than electric.
You should buy the gakken record maker, it records electrically onto 5'' discs and it sounds about as good as a shortwave radio, at least at 45rpm.
So i was thinking what if you took 2 turntables and locked them down tightly next to each other and made a link between the 2 arms (1 arm with the cutting device on it) maybe with string or something. Only the best turn table and base speaker at 3 am will due.
Smart idea
No, the tonearms do not vibrate or move, only the cantelievers do.

Have you tried applying an "anti RIAA" eq to your audio so that you have a more trackable record at the end?

It will not record stereo using this method.

This is a joke!! Yes this a crude way cutting a record. Not worth my effort to make this!
So nice to go back sometimes :-)

Could you use broken headphones and blast the source through them?
Thanks! Although it's not the best method, I still want to make some "acetates" of my songs, no matter the quality. Liked and Subscribed!

Yes as long as it’s plastic.

I'll do this on the weekend! And I *WILL* have the best record ever. I'll update later, but for now, you can stay in my bookmarked.
+Spark Sighs ok sounds good
+databits I think he had a heart attack during your experiment, good job. (No, seriously, keep it up. ;D)
It has proven to be harder than expected.
It would work better with the needle perpendicular to the speaker and not parallel.
Andy Carrillo I agree but then I think it would make a vertical cut recording instead of lateral.
Andy Carrillo That would work for an Edison Diamond Disc-type recording with the needle moving up and down, but standard records are recorded with the needle moving side-to-side, which is why the needle must be parallel to the speaker.
Do you have to use a needle? Can you use something else like a #11 X-acto blade or something sharp like that?
+Peter Ripson - yes, that should work as well
Could just heat the needle with a candle and then push it through the plastic for a perfect fit
Billy Bob yeah
That's what I was thinking
Or soak the record in hot water

you should use lighter fluid to stop the noize when recording/cutting
14:48 rip headphone users
I'd like to see you retry with lighter fluid to smooth the cutting noise and use a slightly sharper needle
Jared Klick
Probably the IV medical needle which is strong and sharp will do the job with little more pressure to make deep grove.....!
Analog audio is actually alternating current
Great video. Was wondering what the plastic disc you used was?
This is the bottom cut out of a plastic Solo plate.
Yeah! Works great!
What could you use so you don't have to hold the cutter in your hand? Thanks
Idk xD
i was glued to the tube!!!!
